The errors you may see
Windows may display one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because avgntopensslx.fmw.1.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because avgntopensslx.fmw.1.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading avgntopensslx.fmw.1.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because avgntopensslx.fmw.1.dll was not found.”
- “avgntopensslx.fmw.1.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The procedure entry point … could not be located in the dynamic link library …”

The file named avgntopensslx.fmw.1.dll is associated with legacy AVG Framework software, including AVG Zen and older AVG antivirus components. It is a private 32-bit application file, not a Windows DLL.
The 60-second answer
Do not download avgntopensslx.fmw.1.dll from a random DLL website and do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.
If AVG is installed, repair it:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find AVG AntiVirus FREE or AVG Internet Security.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- When AVG Setup opens, select Repair.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Repair restores missing or damaged AVG components from the product’s own installation source. If repair is unavailable or fails, remove AVG with its official AVG Uninstall Tool and reinstall the current product from AVG’s official support or download pages.
What this file is
The filename breaks down into three useful clues:
avgntopensslxidentifies an AVG-specific OpenSSL-related component..fmw.1follows the naming style used by the legacy AVG Framework..dllmeans it is a dynamic-link library loaded by an application.
Public file records identify it as the “AVG NT OpenSSL Library” and associate it with AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o. Reported installations place it in a location similar to:

C:Program Files (x86)AVGFrameworkCommonavgntopensslx.fmw.1.dll
The file may appear beside other AVG Framework files, including avgntopenssla.fmw.1.dll, avgopensslx.fmw.1.dll, avgsysx.fmw.1.dll, and avgfmwbasex.dll.
A 32-bit AVG component can legitimately be installed under Program Files (x86) even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Its location and digital signature are more useful for identification than a historical file size or version reported by a third-party catalog.
Why the error happens
The usual causes are:
- An AVG update stopped partway through.
- AVG installation files became damaged.
- One AVG component was removed while another still expected the shared Framework.
- AVG or another security product quarantined the file.
- An AVG folder or file was deleted manually.
- A disk problem corrupted the installation.
- A stale startup item still points to an old AVG installation.
- A mismatched DLL was copied from an unofficial source.
The filename alone cannot prove which application is calling it. If the message appears while launching a non-AVG application, identify that application before changing Windows files.
Fix 1: Repair AVG from Installed apps
This is the best first step when AVG is still installed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Save your work and close running applications.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for
AVG. - Select the three-dot button beside AVG AntiVirus FREE or AVG Internet Security.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Wait for the AVG Setup window to appear.
- Select Repair.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows if AVG requests it.
After restarting, launch AVG and then open the application that produced the DLL error. A successful repair should remove the missing-file message without placing a DLL in a Windows folder.
If the repair option is not shown, the installer is damaged or the installed AVG version does not support repair through that entry. Continue with the removal and reinstall procedure below.
Fix 2: Remove and reinstall AVG cleanly
Use this method if repair fails, AVG will not open, or repeated updates leave the same error.
- Open AVG’s official support site in your browser.
- Download the official AVG Uninstall Tool. The executable is commonly named
avg_av_clear.exe. - Save the tool where you can find it, such as the Downloads folder.
- Right-click the downloaded file and choose Run as administrator.
- Accept the prompts.
- Allow the computer to restart into Safe Mode when requested.
- In the AVG removal tool, choose Remove & Reinstall, then Reinstall if that option is available.
- If you want to remove AVG completely first, choose the removal option instead.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current AVG product from AVG’s official support or download page.
Do not interrupt the removal process by manually deleting C:Program Files (x86)AVG or related folders. The official tool removes services, shared components, and installation records that a normal folder deletion leaves behind.

If the message remains after AVG has been reinstalled, continue by identifying the caller.
Fix 3: Check quarantine and security history
A security product may have quarantined the DLL because it was damaged, changed unexpectedly, or located in an old AVG directory.
In Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving AVG,
avgntopensslx.fmw.1.dll, or an AVG Framework folder. - Expand the event and review its path and action.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- It was located inside the expected AVG installation directory.
- AVG is currently installed and requires that component.
- The detection is clearly a quarantine or removal of an AVG file.
- The file can be restored through the security product’s normal interface.
Do not disable protection permanently to force a DLL to load. The safer approach is to repair or reinstall AVG so the product supplies a fresh copy.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, a user profile download directory, or a program unrelated to AVG, do not restore it based only on its filename.

Fix 4: Check the expected path and signature
Use File Explorer to see whether the file exists in an AVG directory:
C:Program Files (x86)AVGFrameworkCommon
This path supports AVG attribution, but the path alone does not prove that a file is safe.
If the file is present:
- Right-click it.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if available.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that it relates to AVG.
If the file is missing, do not obtain a replacement from a DLL download site. Repair or reinstall the parent AVG product instead.
If the file is in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory, treat that as a reason to investigate further rather than as proof that it belongs there.

Fix 5: Identify a stale AVG startup entry
If AVG has already been removed but Windows still displays the error during startup, a leftover service, shortcut, scheduled task, or startup entry may be calling the old DLL.
First, check Settings → Apps → Installed apps and remove any remaining AVG product normally.
Then inspect startup applications:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an AVG entry whose status is enabled.
- Right-click it and choose Disable temporarily.
- Restart Windows.
Also check Task Scheduler:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for clearly identified AVG tasks.
- Open a task’s Actions tab to see which executable it runs.
- Disable an obsolete task rather than deleting unrelated tasks.
If an AVG installation is partly present, reinstalling AVG and then removing it cleanly is safer than manually editing the registry. Do not delete isolated registry values merely because they contain the DLL filename.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged
avgntopensslx.fmw.1.dll is a third-party AVG file. System File Checker and DISM do not normally restore it. Use them when Windows itself shows broader symptoms, such as failed updates, damaged built-in apps, or servicing errors that prevent AVG repair.

- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands complete successfully but the AVG DLL error remains, return to AVG repair or reinstall rather than repeating the commands indefinitely.
The manual process can involve waiting through long scans and interpreting servicing messages without knowing which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it identifies, while repair actions require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling AVG remains the definitive fix for an AVG-owned file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Install Visual C++ only for a separate runtime error
Some pages incorrectly describe this AVG filename as a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file. It is not. Microsoft runtime packages provide files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll, and ucrtbase.dll, not AVG-named libraries.
Install or repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only if:
- The error also names one of those Microsoft runtime files.
- AVG Setup reports a missing runtime prerequisite.
- The affected application’s documentation specifically requires it.
Use Microsoft’s Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable Downloads. For a 32-bit application, install the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows. Do not remove older redistributables merely because a newer package is installed.
Fix 8: Check drivers only when the symptoms are broader
A missing AVG Framework DLL is not normally a device-driver problem. Driver updates become relevant when Windows is also crashing, storage devices are disappearing, or the AVG installer fails because of a hardware or storage issue.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories containing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if prompted.
Do not use Device Manager to search for avgntopensslx.fmw.1.dll; it cannot restore application files. Manually hunting through hardware vendors for outdated versions can also be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional; for this particular DLL, repairing or reinstalling the parent AVG application remains the direct solution.
Why System32, SysWOW64, and regsvr32 are wrong
Do not copy this file into either of these folders:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those directories are not general storage locations for missing DLLs. Copying a private AVG library there can create version conflicts and still leave the original AVG installation broken.
Do not run:
regsvr32 avgntopensslx.fmw.1.dll
regsvr32 is intended for registering COM and ActiveX DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A private AVG runtime library generally does not need registration. Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registry-registration utility, not a generic missing-DLL repair command.
If the message says “specified module could not be found,” the named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. That is another reason to repair the complete AVG installation instead of copying one file.
When the error appears in a game or unrelated program
The exact caller matters. Open Task Manager, note the program running when the message appears, and check that program’s installation in Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
If the error appears only with a non-AVG application:
- Update that application through its official installer.
- Use its built-in repair option if available.
- Uninstall and reinstall it if it bundled an old AVG component.
- Check its installation directory for leftover AVG files.
- Contact the application’s developer if it still calls an obsolete AVG Framework path.
A game launcher’s file-verification feature is relevant only when the game clearly installed the missing component. It is not a substitute for repairing AVG when AVG is the parent application.
FAQ
Is avgntopensslx.fmw.1.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with AVG Framework software and is not a standard Windows component.
Should I download the DLL separately?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, or a mismatched build. They also leave the damaged AVG installation and its services untouched. Use AVG’s repair option or official removal and reinstall tools.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public file records describe it as a Win32, 32-bit DLL. That is consistent with an installation under Program Files (x86) on 64-bit Windows.
Does it belong in SysWOW64?
There is no evidence that it should normally be placed there. It belongs with the AVG installation that uses it.
Will SFC fix it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this is an AVG application file. Run DISM and SFC only when Windows servicing itself also appears damaged.
What if AVG has already been uninstalled?
Look for a stale startup entry or scheduled task. Reinstalling AVG and then removing it cleanly can be safer than deleting registry entries manually.
What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?
It can indicate a corrupt, incompatible, or mismatched copy. Repair or reinstall AVG rather than replacing the file with a download from an unofficial source.
