If maxrast.dll is missing, PaperPort may fail to start, open a document, show thumbnails, or render a PDF. maxrast.dll is a PaperPort Rendering component, not a Windows system DLL.
Quick diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record:
- Which program shows the error: PaperPort, a scanner utility, or another application bundled with PaperPort
- When it appears: at startup, while opening a document, during PDF conversion, or when scanning
- The complete message: including the executable named in the error
- The file path: if Windows or antivirus identifies one
- Your Windows edition: Windows 10 or Windows 11, and 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether antivirus recently quarantined or deleted a file
- Whether PaperPort was recently updated, partially uninstalled, or cleaned from the disk
The filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine. The safest repair is to restore the complete PaperPort installation that originally supplied it.

1. Repair or reinstall PaperPort first
A missing maxrast.dll usually indicates an incomplete or damaged PaperPort installation. Do not start by copying a DLL from another computer or downloading one separately.
Try the repair option
- Close PaperPort and any scanner software.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select PaperPort in Programs and Features.
- Choose Change, Modify, or Repair, depending on what the installer provides.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Open PaperPort and test the action that previously failed.
If PaperPort starts and can display a document or PDF, the repair restored the required component.

Perform a complete reinstall
If no repair option exists or the error remains:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Remove PaperPort.
- Also remove associated PaperPort components listed separately, such as PDF Viewer, Image Printer, or PDF Create, when they are present.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original PaperPort installer or the official installer for your licensed edition.
- If you have installation media, run its
Autorun.exe, select the language, choose Start installation, and complete the InstallShield setup. - Restart again.
- Test PaperPort before reinstalling unrelated software.
PaperPort installs several components together. Removing only one component can leave the application malfunctioning, so a complete reinstall is preferable to manually replacing maxrast.dll.
If you use a scanner bundle or another product that installed PaperPort, use that product’s repair or reinstall workflow instead of mixing files from different PaperPort editions.
2. Check the file path and digital signature
A genuine PaperPort copy should normally be inside the PaperPort installation directory, commonly similar to:
C:Program FilesNuancePaperPortmaxrast.dll
The exact folder can differ by edition, installation choice, and historical branding. A copy in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory should not be treated as the correct replacement.
To inspect an existing copy:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the file.
- Right-click
maxrast.dll. - Select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab, if available.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the file belongs to the PaperPort installation you intended to use.
Historical PaperPort records identify older files with Visioneer or Nuance branding. Current PaperPort documentation is published under Tungsten Automation, following earlier ownership and branding changes. These names refer to PaperPort’s product history and do not prove that every release contains the same file version.
Some historical records list a PaperPort 14 sample with version 14.0.11372.1829 and a size of about 149.85 KB. Older PaperPort records also exist. Do not use those values as a target for your installation: the required build depends on your PaperPort release.

A valid signature is helpful, but it is not a reason to keep a file in the wrong folder. The file must also match the installed PaperPort build.

3. Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update or scan.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
maxrast.dllor the PaperPort installation folder. - Expand the entry and note the detected path and action.
- Do not restore the file solely because its name matches the error.
- Restore it only when the path belongs to your genuine PaperPort installation and its signature is valid.
- If the detection remains credible, leave the file quarantined.
- Uninstall and reinstall PaperPort from official installation media, then run a full security scan.
If antivirus repeatedly removes a newly installed copy, do not keep restoring it. Capture the detection name and full path, update Windows Security, and contact PaperPort support or your security vendor.
4. Reinstall the matching PaperPort edition
A file copied from another PaperPort computer may be the wrong build. That can produce errors such as:
- The procedure entry point could not be located
- The file is not designed to run on Windows
- A required dependency is missing
- The application closes when rendering a document
The fix is to reinstall the same PaperPort edition and update level used by the affected installation.

Do not copy maxrast.dll from a different PaperPort release, another computer, or a random backup unless the backup is known to contain the complete matching application. Reinstalling the full product restores related components and dependencies together.

If PaperPort opens but fails only with one PDF, test another document. A damaged document or a separate PDF subsystem problem may be involved rather than a missing DLL.
5. Repair PaperPort prerequisites
PaperPort installers can include Microsoft prerequisites, including Visual C++ 2015, 2010, and 2008 runtimes and .NET Framework 4.5.2, depending on the edition.
If the error names a Microsoft runtime rather than maxrast.dll:
- Note the exact runtime named in the message.
- Use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ downloads page.
- Match the package architecture to the application.
- Install x86 for a 32-bit PaperPort or helper application, even on 64-bit Windows.
- Install x64 only when a 64-bit application requires it.
- Restart Windows.
- Run PaperPort again.
A 64-bit Windows installation does not mean that PaperPort is 64-bit. Do not infer the application architecture from the DLL filename. Also, the newest Visual C++ package does not necessarily replace every older runtime required by an older PaperPort installer. Use the prerequisite packages supplied with the matching PaperPort installer when necessary.
6. Do not use regsvr32 for this repair
regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
Running this command is normally inappropriate:
regsvr32 maxrast.dll
It may report that DllRegisterServer was not found, and it cannot recreate a deleted file or correct a mismatched PaperPort build. Do not register maxrast.dll unless PaperPort support gives you a specific instruction for your exact installation.

7. Repair Windows components only when other symptoms point to Windows
maxrast.dll is a third-party application file, so Windows integrity tools will not normally recreate it. Use them when Windows itself is also reporting damaged components, update failures, broken system applications, or unexplained servicing errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try PaperPort again.
DISM should run before SFC. These commands repair Windows components, not the PaperPort installation. If SFC reports that it repaired files but PaperPort still reports maxrast.dll, repair or reinstall PaperPort.

8. Check permissions, disk health, and the user profile
If the file exists but PaperPort still cannot load it:
- Confirm that the PaperPort folder has not been moved or renamed.
- Right-click the PaperPort folder and select Properties.
- On Security, confirm that your user account has read and execute permission.
- Start PaperPort once by right-clicking its shortcut and choosing Run as administrator.
- If that works, repair the installation rather than permanently running the program elevated.
- Check available disk space.
- Review whether disk-cleanup software recently removed application files.
- Restore the complete application from a known-good backup or reinstall it.
If only one Windows account is affected, create a temporary local user under Settings → Accounts → Other users and test PaperPort there. A new profile can distinguish profile-specific settings from a damaged installation.

- Disconnect the scanner if it is connected by USB.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers, depending on the hardware.
- Right-click the scanner.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test PaperPort.
- If Windows finds nothing, install the driver supplied by the scanner manufacturer for your exact model and Windows version.
- Avoid removing the device unless you have the correct replacement driver ready.
A driver problem may prevent scanning, but it does not make maxrast.dll a Windows driver. Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

It can also leave the underlying incomplete installation unchanged.
