avireader.dll is an application plug-in called “Uncompressed AVI reader,” associated with the older Helix DNA Producer SDK and RealNetworks multimedia technology. The safest fix is to identify the program named in the error path, then repair or reinstall that exact application rather than downloading a loose DLL or copying one into a Windows folder.
What this file actually does
avireader.dll reads uncompressed AVI media for older video, audio, conversion, and editing software. It is not a normal Windows component and should not ordinarily be present in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The file has appeared with older Sony Movie Studio, Vegas, and Sound Forge installations, Xilisoft converter software, Virtools-related applications, and some third-party codec bundles. Those products may contain different builds. A matching filename does not prove that a DLL from one program will work with another.

The commonly catalogued file is a 32-bit PE32 DLL. That matters because a 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL. An older 32-bit application can generally run on 64-bit Windows through Windows compatibility support, but its plug-ins still need to match the application.

Causes compared with symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| “avireader.dll was not found” when launching an old editor | The application installation is incomplete or the plug-in was deleted | Repair or reinstall the application |
The error includes FileIO Plug-Insrm9plugtoolsavireader.dll |
The program is looking for its private media plug-in | Restore the parent program’s plug-in set |
| “The specified module could not be found” although the file exists | A dependency of avireader.dll is missing, or the build is incompatible |
Reinstall the complete application, not just the DLL |
| The error began after antivirus activity | Windows Security or another security product quarantined the file | Inspect Protection History before restoring anything |
| The error began after a Windows upgrade | The old application or one of its 32-bit components is incompatible | Reinstall the application and test compatibility settings |
| The message appears after uninstalling the program | A stale startup entry or shortcut still points to the removed file | Remove the orphaned startup item or reinstall and cleanly remove the application |
| Several unrelated Windows programs report missing files | Broader system corruption or malware may be involved | Scan the system, then use DISM and SFC |
The exact message may read:
- “This application failed to start because avireader.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because avireader.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The file avireader.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading avireader.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “A required component is missing: avireader.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Failed to load avireader.dll.”
Fix 1: Identify the application that owns the DLL
Do this before downloading or copying anything. The full path in the error usually tells you which program installed the file.
Read the error path
Look for a path containing a product name or plug-in folder, such as:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- A Sony Movie Studio, Vegas, or Sound Forge directory
- An Xilisoft installation directory
- A codec or media-conversion folder
- A
FileIO Plug-Insorrm9plugdirectory - A Virtools-related application folder
Write down the complete path, including the executable name if it appears. Also note whether the error occurs when opening a particular program, loading a video, or starting Windows.
If there is no path:
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the program’s installation folder.
- Search that folder for
avireader.dll.
Do not assume the program that displays the message created the DLL. A video editor may be loading a plug-in originally developed for a separate multimedia SDK.
Check whether the application is 32-bit
A catalogued avireader.dll is x86, or 32-bit. The host program should normally be a 32-bit application as well.
To inspect the program:
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- Start the affected application if it will open.
- Right-click the column headings.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
Some Windows versions do not show the platform column. In that case, inspect the application’s installation location and documentation. Older applications installed under C:Program Files (x86) are commonly 32-bit, although the folder alone is not conclusive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 2: Repair the affected application
Repair is the least disruptive solution because it can restore the missing plug-in without removing the application’s settings.
Repair through Windows 11 Settings
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected video, audio, converter, or legacy multimedia program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is unavailable, select Modify when offered. Follow the installer’s repair prompts and allow it to restore optional media or plug-in components.
Repair through Control Panel
This is often the correct route for older desktop software.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair if the installer provides it.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Open the application and load the media file that previously caused the error.
If the application starts and the AVI reader error no longer appears, the repair worked. If the same message returns, the repair may not include the missing legacy plug-in, or the installation may be too damaged for an in-place repair.

Fix 3: Reinstall the exact application and its plug-ins
For this particular DLL, a complete reinstall is usually more reliable than replacing one file. The program may require additional codecs, configuration files, registry entries, and dependent DLLs alongside avireader.dll.
- Back up projects, presets, license information, and custom templates.
- Close the affected program.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the program and choose Uninstall.
- If it is not listed there, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the program and choose Uninstall or Change.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the same edition from the original installer, the publisher’s official download area, or verified installation media.
- Install the matching 32-bit or 64-bit edition.
- If the installer offers optional codecs, media readers, or plug-ins, leave the required components selected.
- Start the application once using Run as administrator.
- Test the same operation that produced the error.
Do not mix a DLL from Sony software with an Xilisoft installation, or a file from one edition with another edition, simply because both files are called avireader.dll. Different builds can have different dependencies and expected exports.
If the program is obsolete and you no longer have a legitimate installer or backup, there may be no safe standalone replacement. In that situation, use a supported application that can open the media, or restore the original program from verified installation media.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring the file
Security software can remove or quarantine a media plug-in. That does not automatically mean every copy of avireader.dll is malicious, but it does mean you should not restore a copy blindly.
Check Windows Security Protection History
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry naming
avireader.dll. - Expand the entry and read the detected path and threat name.
Compare the quarantined path with the application path you identified earlier.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- It was installed by a program you intentionally installed.
- The path belongs to that program’s normal installation directory.
- The application installer came from a legitimate publisher or verified backup.
- A current security scan does not identify the complete installation as unsafe.
If the file came from a codec bundle, an unofficial repack, or a folder associated with potentially unwanted software, do not use Allow on device simply to make the error disappear. Uninstall the questionable bundle and reinstall the affected application from a trusted source.
If you restore a legitimate quarantined file and it is immediately removed again, leave it quarantined and contact the software publisher or security-product vendor. Repeatedly disabling protection is not a sound repair.
Fix 5: Resolve a missing dependency or architecture mismatch
The message “The specified module could not be found” can be misleading. Windows may be able to find avireader.dll but fail to load one of the DLLs it depends on.
Reinstall the complete host program
Start with the application’s repair or reinstall process rather than searching for individual dependencies. This restores the expected collection of files and the correct architecture together.
Check the process architecture
A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit copy of its plug-in. Installing a 64-bit edition of the application may not solve the problem if that edition expects a different plug-in arrangement. Conversely, a 64-bit process cannot load the commonly catalogued x86 version of avireader.dll.
Use the application’s installer or publisher documentation to select the edition that matches the original program. Do not copy the file between Program Files and Program Files (x86) as a test.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not install Visual C++ automatically
There is no evidence that a specific Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable is the source package for avireader.dll. Install a Microsoft runtime only when:
- The error explicitly names that runtime.
- The affected application’s official requirements specify it.
- The original installer includes it.
Installing every Visual C++ package, DirectX package, or .NET version is not a substitute for restoring the application’s own plug-in.
Fix 6: Test compatibility after a Windows upgrade
If the program worked before an upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 11, its old installer or plug-in may need compatibility adjustments.

- Select Run.
- Choose the affected application.
- Follow the recommended test settings.
- Launch the application when prompted.
- Confirm whether it can load the AVI media.
- Save the settings if the test succeeds.
You can also test the executable directly:
- Browse to the application’s
.exefile. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose the Windows version recommended by the application’s documentation.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the program.
Compatibility mode cannot make a 64-bit process load a 32-bit DLL. If the application still fails, reinstall the correct legacy build and its complete plug-in set.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when the symptoms are broader
Windows system repair tools will not recreate avireader.dll, because this is a third-party application plug-in. They are useful when Windows itself has damaged protected components, or when several unrelated applications are failing.
First scan for malware with Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options. Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Select Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows component-store and protected-system-file problems, not a missing media plug-in. If the application still reports avireader.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall steps.
When repeatedly hunting through Windows components and repeating repairs is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; its full-version repair is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when this plug-in is missing.
Fix 8: Update drivers only when the failure points to media hardware
A display, sound, or capture driver can cause a separate media playback problem, but updating drivers will not normally restore a missing avireader.dll. Use this step when the program opens but crashes while previewing, recording, or playing media, or when Device Manager reports a hardware problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for devices under Sound, video and game controllers.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
For a manufacturer driver, identify the exact computer or hardware model and obtain the driver from the computer or component manufacturer. Do not replace the application’s DLL with a driver file.
When several devices need checking, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation through the full version is optional, and it will not replace the definitive application reinstall for avireader.dll.
Why you should not register or copy this DLL
Do not run regsvr32 avireader.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. avireader.dll is a private AVI-reading plug-in, not a documented COM component. There is no reliable reason to register it as a default repair.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Running:
regsvr32 avireader.dll
will commonly produce an error, or create the impression that registration succeeded without fixing the application’s plug-in search path.
Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
The application normally expects its own copy in its private plug-in directory. Copying a file into a Windows system folder can cause version conflicts, architecture confusion, or DLL search-order security problems.
It also does not repair missing dependencies. If the application requires a particular companion DLL beside avireader.dll, a system-folder copy leaves the real installation incomplete.
Avoid random DLL download sites
A loose download may contain malware, a modified file, the wrong architecture, or a build intended for another product. Even a clean file may fail because the application needs additional files and configuration. Use the original application installer, verified backup media, or the application publisher’s official support and download channels.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Fix 9: Use System Restore only for a clearly recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, application installation, Windows update, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore may remove a recent application or driver, but it is not a replacement for a verified reinstall. Do not use it as a first response to a missing plug-in if the parent application can be repaired directly.
If the error appears after uninstalling the program
An error at every boot usually means a startup entry, scheduled task, shortcut, or helper process still points to the removed application.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Disable an entry clearly belonging to the removed program.
- Restart Windows.
- If the message remains, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and check for a related codec, updater, or helper package.
- Remove only entries you can identify confidently.
If the program is still partly installed, reinstall it from a legitimate source and then uninstall it cleanly. The recurring message does not mean Windows itself needs avireader.dll.

- The name and edition of the affected application
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Your Windows edition and architecture
- Whether antivirus quarantined the file

FAQ
Is avireader.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an application-level AVI reader associated with older Helix and RealNetworks multimedia technology. Known copies belong in application or codec directories, not normally in System32 or SysWOW64.
Which program installed avireader.dll?
The path must identify the owner. Known associations include older Sony Movie Studio, Vegas, and Sound Forge software, Xilisoft converters, Virtools-related programs, and codec bundles. These products may contain different builds and are not interchangeable.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Can I download avireader.dll by itself?
A standalone file from an unknown DLL site is not a safe or dependable fix. Restore the application from its official installer or a verified backup instead.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the first response. Install a runtime only when the error names it or the affected application’s official requirements call for it. Reinstalling the host application is more appropriate for this DLL.
Should I run regsvr32?
No, not normally. This is a private media plug-in, not a documented COM server that needs registration.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is present?
A dependency may be missing, the DLL may be damaged, the application may be loading the wrong build, or the process may be the wrong architecture. Reinstall the complete application and its plug-ins.
Can SFC restore avireader.dll?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows files. It does not supply third-party application plug-ins.
What if antivirus detects the file?
Inspect Protection History and verify the file’s path and installer source. Do not restore a copy from an unofficial codec bundle merely because an application refuses to start. Reinstall from a legitimate source when provenance is uncertain.
Is version 9.1.0.92 required?
No. That is a catalogued build, not a universal requirement. Other applications and bundles may contain different versions, so match the file to the application that installed it.
