Its store page advertises a substantial amount of narrative and replayable choices, while Steam’s user-rating snapshot was strongly positive when checked on October 7, 2026. Those figures help establish the game’s scope and reception, but they are not a substitute for a hands-on review.
What is Back to the Dawn?
Developed by Metal Head Games and published by Spiral Up Games, Back to the Dawn is a pixel-art RPG set in a maximum-security prison. Its full Steam release arrived on July 17, 2025, following an Early Access period that began on November 2, 2023. The publisher announced version 1.0 for Steam and Xbox; the announcement does not establish current subscription access, regional availability, or compatibility with particular Xbox models. The premise is more than simply finding a way past the prison walls. The official descriptions emphasize routine, social dynamics among animal inmates, alliances, quests and escape planning. The publisher has named Infernal Affairs and Hard Boiled, along with games such as Prison Architect and The Escapists, as inspirations. Those are contextual references from the publisher, not proof that the finished game shares their mechanics or reproduces the films’ tone. Publisher AMA
Who do you play as?
The Steam listing presents two protagonists with separate stories. It advertises each storyline as over 20 hours, a store estimate rather than an independently measured playtime. Steam listing
#1 Best Overall
- It's the prison break party game!
- You and your "friends" were wrongfully accused of crime and must now break out of prison!
- You'll need to move through four areas of the board as you act, draw, and solve your way to freedom
- Variety in gameplay allows for unlimited replay
- For 3-8 players, ages 13 and up
| Protagonist | Story premise in the Steam listing | Advertised length |
|---|---|---|
| Thomas | A reporter caught in a conspiracy | Over 20 hours per storyline, according to Steam |
| Bob | An undercover agent | Over 20 hours per storyline, according to Steam |
The two viewpoints offer different narrative setups. The listing does not provide enough detail to say precisely how their abilities, quest paths or escape strategies differ, so treat them as distinct campaigns rather than assuming a particular mechanical contrast.
What does the game offer?
Steam advertises three gangs, more than 100 handcrafted quests, multiple escape routes with different risks and rewards, several endings and over 500,000 words of narrative. These are publisher/store scope claims, not independently verified counts. Together with the two protagonist stories, they signal an RPG designed to make social choices and escape plans central to its appeal. Steam listing

- Trapped in different cells, your two teams must race against eachother to follow the clues left for you by a past inmate and escape.
- Solve escape room style puzzles and use several mysterious objects found in the box to find the treasure
- Features a brand new team format that gives players asymetrical information that they must communicate to eachother
- Great for 2 or more players and takes 1-2 hours
- This game can only be played once as you must rip tear, and destroy components to complete it
The key question for a prospective player is whether the interacting systems suit their tastes: managing relationships, pursuing information, advancing a character and working toward an escape. The available descriptions make these the game’s advertised pillars, but they do not establish how frequently the player must manage time, or how deeply individual decisions alter the route. A comparison with another prison game is most useful when it looks at daily routine, alliance consequences, the balance between stealth and other approaches, and how clearly the game communicates the risks of its escape options.
What do reviews and Steam players say?
On October 7, 2026, Steam showed 95% positive from 1,270 English-language reviews and 96% positive from 50 recent reviews. These are changing user-review snapshots, not critic scores or a guarantee that an individual player will enjoy the game. Steam also displayed a Metacritic score of 81; the listing did not provide the critic sample or calculation context for that figure. Steam listing

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Back to the Dawn worth playing?
Back to the Dawn is worth considering if you want a narrative-led RPG that puts prison relationships, investigation and escape planning at the center, and you are interested in playing two protagonist campaigns. Its Steam review snapshot is encouraging, but advertised playtime and content counts should be read as store claims, not guarantees of how long your own playthrough will take or how much variety you will find. If you are deciding between it and another prison game, focus on whether you want a story-and-choices RPG rather than assuming the shared prison setting means the games play alike.
