In Minecraft Java and Bedrock 1.21 and later, defeating a raid captain outside a raid gives you an Ominous Bottle rather than applying Bad Omen immediately. Drinking that bottle applies one of five Bad Omen levels for 1 hour and 40 minutes. Entering a village then converts the effect into Raid Omen and starts a 30-second countdown. Drink milk during that countdown to cancel the raid.

What Bad Omen does in Minecraft 1.21+
Bad Omen is an effect that opts your player into dangerous events. The effect itself does not instantly start a raid when you walk into a village anymore. Instead, the game changes it to Raid Omen and gives you a short window to decide whether to continue or cancel.

This redesign applies to both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition in the 1.21 series. Mojang’s Java 1.21 notes describe the key change plainly: “Bad Omen no longer triggers a Raid directly when entering a Village.” The practical result is that you can carry an Ominous Bottle safely, choose when to drink it, and still cancel the village event after it begins.
How you get Bad Omen now
Defeat a raid captain outside a raid
A raid captain defeated outside an active raid can drop an Ominous Bottle. The bottle is an item you pick up and decide whether to consume; the captain no longer places Bad Omen on you automatically in current 1.21 Java or Bedrock.
#1 Best Overall
Find a bottle in a trial-chamber vault
Ominous Bottles can also be found in trial-chamber vaults. This gives you a second way to obtain the effect without hunting a captain in the Overworld.
Do not confuse carrying with drinking
Picking up or storing an Ominous Bottle does not activate Bad Omen. Keep the bottle in a chest, ender chest, or inventory until you are ready. The activation step is consuming it.

There are five Ominous Bottle variants, corresponding to the five Bad Omen levels. Drinking a bottle applies its level to you for 1 hour and 40 minutes, a duration specified by Mojang in 2024. The level on the bottle therefore matters: it determines which level of Bad Omen you carry into a village or Trial Chamber.
| Item or state | What it means | Duration or timing |
|---|---|---|
| Ominous Bottle | Unconsumed item; no Bad Omen is active | Until you drink it or otherwise use it |
| Bad Omen | Active effect after consuming a bottle | 1 hour 40 minutes |
| Raid Omen | Bad Omen transformed after entering a village | 30-second countdown |
| Trial Omen | Bad Omen transformed near a non-ominous Trial Spawner | 15 minutes multiplied by the transformed Bad Omen level |
The long Bad Omen timer is not a requirement to start a raid. It is simply how long the effect remains available before you enter a triggering location or remove it. Once you enter a village, the relevant timer becomes the 30-second Raid Omen countdown.
Rank #2
What happens when you enter a village
- Bad Omen is active. You have consumed an Ominous Bottle and still have the effect.
- You enter a village. The game recognizes the location as a village and transforms Bad Omen into Raid Omen.
- The 30-second countdown begins. This is your preparation and cancellation window.
- The countdown expires. If you have not cleared the effect, a raid starts at that village.
The transformation means that walking into a village is no longer an instant, irreversible trigger. You can see the event begin, move quickly to a safe position, and decide whether to drink milk or allow the raid to proceed.
How to remove Bad Omen and stop a raid
Method 1: Drink milk before entering a village
A milk bucket clears active status effects. If you are carrying Bad Omen and have changed your mind, drink milk while still away from a village. You then enter without the effect that would become Raid Omen.
Method 2: Drink milk during the Raid Omen countdown
If you already entered the village, use the 30-second window:
- Keep the milk bucket in your hotbar or otherwise accessible before approaching the village.
- Enter the village and wait for Bad Omen to transform into Raid Omen.
- Drink the milk bucket immediately during the countdown.
- Confirm that the omen effect has cleared before the countdown expires.
Mojang’s release notes state that, like any other effect, players can drink a bucket of milk to clear Raid Omen and prevent the raid from starting. This is the reliable way to cancel the event once the village warning has appeared.
Rank #3
What milk does and does not do
Milk removes the effect; it does not preserve Bad Omen for later use. If you still want to start a raid, keep the Ominous Bottle unopened or obtain another bottle rather than drinking milk. Milk is therefore a cancellation tool, not a pause button.
How to avoid starting a raid accidentally
- Leave Ominous Bottles unopened. The item is harmless until consumed.
- Store bottles separately. Keep them away from food and other frequently used items so you do not drink one by mistake.
- Check your effect before approaching a village. If Bad Omen is active and you do not want a raid, drink milk first.
- Carry milk when exploring with Bad Omen. If a village appears unexpectedly, you can cancel during the 30-second Raid Omen countdown.
- Do not assume the old captain behavior still applies. In 1.21 and later, killing a captain outside a raid gives you a bottle rather than an automatic effect.
How to start a raid intentionally
To begin a raid on purpose, consume an Ominous Bottle away from the village you intend to defend. Travel to that village only after you have chosen a site and prepared your defenses. Entering transforms Bad Omen into Raid Omen and starts the 30-second countdown.
- Obtain an Ominous Bottle from a captain defeated outside a raid or from a trial-chamber vault.
- Keep the bottle until you are ready; do not drink it during routine travel.
- Prepare the village before activation. Place yourself where you can respond as soon as the event begins.
- Drink the bottle to apply the chosen Bad Omen level.
- Enter the village and use the 30-second Raid Omen period to take your final position.
- Do not drink milk if you want the raid to proceed. When the countdown expires, the raid starts at that village.
The bottle-based system lets you separate preparation from activation. You can gather supplies, choose a level, and approach the village only when you are ready to accept the consequences.
Bad Omen in Trial Chambers: Trial Omen
Bad Omen is not limited to villages. Near a non-ominous Trial Spawner, it can become Trial Omen, making the trial an optional Ominous Event rather than an ordinary encounter.
Rank #4
Trial Omen lasts 15 minutes multiplied by the transformed Bad Omen level. The multiplication uses the level after Bad Omen is transformed for the trial, so the bottle level affects how long the ominous trial state remains available.
Ominous Trials are described by Mojang as more challenging optional events with unique rewards. This is a different use of the same consumable effect: the trigger is a Trial Chamber and its spawner, not a village, and the result is an escalated trial rather than a village raid.
| Comparison point | Ordinary raid | Ominous Trial |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger location | A village | Near a non-ominous Trial Spawner in a Trial Chamber |
| Effect transformation | Bad Omen becomes Raid Omen | Bad Omen becomes Trial Omen |
| Timing | 30-second countdown; a raid starts when it expires | Trial Omen lasts 15 minutes multiplied by the transformed Bad Omen level |
| Difficulty | Standard raid event | More challenging optional event |
| Rewards | Raid rewards | Unique rewards associated with Ominous Trials |
If you are entering a Trial Chamber for normal exploration, avoid consuming Bad Omen first. If you want the harder event and its unique rewards, choose the bottle level deliberately and approach the appropriate spawner with a plan.

“I killed a captain, but I did not get Bad Omen.”
That is expected in current 1.21 Java and Bedrock. Look for the Ominous Bottle drop. You must consume it to receive Bad Omen.
Best Value
“I entered a village and a raid did not start immediately.”
The 1.21 system inserts the Raid Omen stage first. Watch the 30-second countdown. Drink milk before it reaches zero if you want to cancel.

“I drank milk, but I still expected a raid.”
Milk clears the omen effect and prevents the raid from starting. To try again, obtain another Ominous Bottle and consume it when you are prepared.
“I want to keep Bad Omen while visiting a village.”
Entering a village transforms the effect into Raid Omen, so do not enter a village while carrying an active effect unless you are ready to use the countdown. The safest approach is to keep the bottle unopened until after ordinary village visits.
“Why did a Trial Chamber become ominous instead of starting a raid?”
Trial Chambers use a separate transformation. Near a non-ominous Trial Spawner, Bad Omen becomes Trial Omen and opts you into the more challenging Ominous Trial event.
Version history: before and after 1.21
Before 1.21, defeating a raid captain directly granted Bad Omen. That older behavior is the source of many current explanations that tell players to kill a captain and immediately search for a village.

In the 1.21 redesign, the captain drops an Ominous Bottle instead. Consuming the bottle is the deliberate activation step. The same update also changed village entry: Bad Omen no longer triggers a raid directly, but first becomes Raid Omen with a 30-second countdown.
Guides written for pre-1.21 versions can therefore give two wrong impressions for modern worlds: that the effect is unavoidable after killing a captain, and that entering a village starts a raid with no warning. On current Java and Bedrock, both assumptions are outdated.
