BAFTA Games Awards judging is a staged process rather than one all-member ballot. In the 2027 cycle, roughly 1,700 games-industry BAFTA members create category longlists. Best Game, British Game and Evolving Game then stay with the membership for both nominations and the winner; most other categories move to specialist juries of nine to 12 experts. Those juries play the longlisted games, deliberate, select six nominees and choose a winner by a blind ballot. Appointed scrutineers authenticate every vote, and BAFTA treats its decisions as final.
How does the BAFTA Games Awards process work?
The awards use two decision paths after entries are submitted. Every category begins with a member vote to establish a longlist of 10 games. From there, three categories use the wider games membership again, while the remaining categories are handed to specialist juries. The 2027 rules are the controlling reference for this explanation; BAFTA’s Games Committee reviews the system every year, so category assignments and eligibility can change in a later cycle.

- Longlisting: games voting members rank entries, producing the top 10 in each category.
- Nomination: either members or a specialist jury reduces that longlist to six nominees.
- Winner: the same decision route selects the category winner, with jury winner ballots conducted blind.
BAFTA’s published rules do not describe a public points formula or a turnout threshold. They identify the electorate, the category route and the authentication safeguards, but not the weighting applied inside the games vote.
How does a game enter and reach the people judging it?
Developers and publishers enter a game in the categories for which it is eligible. BAFTA encourages entrants to make the game available to voting members through BAFTA bundles, supplied codes or an existing subscription service. Access is part of the practical submission process: members are expected to play games in contention, but they are not required to buy a title themselves.

If a title reaches the jury stage, BAFTA may request up to 15 copies of each longlisted game for each category. The entrant must supply any additional hardware needed to run those copies. The rules therefore separate software access, which BAFTA actively requests, from specialist equipment, which remains the entrant’s responsibility.
BAFTA’s guidance does not promise that every voter will use every access method. It says entrants may provide access and that voters are expected to apply their expertise after playing the games they consider. A submission is consequently not a conventional consumer review sample: it is material supplied so an authenticated awards electorate can evaluate the entry.
How is the first-round longlist chosen?
Approximately 1,700 BAFTA members who are games-industry professionals make the first-round decisions under the 2027 rules. Entries are grouped by category, and the 10 highest-ranked games in each category form its longlist.
Most categories use the full games-voting membership in this round. Five areas are exceptions because their first-round electorate is a specialist chapter:
- Artistic Achievement: the Art chapter.
- Audio Achievement: the Audio chapter.
- Game Design: the Design chapter.
- Technical Achievement: the Technical chapter.
- Performer in a Leading or Supporting Role: the Performance chapters.
That distinction affects only the longlist vote for those categories. A specialist chapter is not automatically the final jury: after longlisting, the category follows the jury route described in the rules.
BAFTA’s 2026 longlist announcement said 255 games were considered for that year’s longlist. That figure describes the number considered in the 2026 cycle, not a permanent annual quota or the number that will appear in every category.

Which BAFTA categories are decided by members all the way through?
In the 2027 cycle, Best Game, British Game and Evolving Game remain member-voted after longlisting. Games voting members select the six nominees from the longlist and then select the winner from those nominees.
Evolving Game is the notable change in the 2027 rules: BAFTA says it is newly open to a member-wide vote in every round. Earlier cycles used a narrower member-voted pathway. For example, BAFTA’s 2025 explainer described members choosing the Best Game and British Game nominations while specialist juries handled the other categories.
“Member-voted” does not mean a public fan vote. The electorate is the authenticated group of BAFTA games-industry members, not all players or anyone who visits a voting page. The rules also do not publish a turnout figure or explain a numerical weighting formula for the member ballot.
Which categories go to specialist juries?
Every 2027 category other than Best Game, British Game and Evolving Game uses a jury for nominations and the winner after its longlist is set. Each jury contains nine to 12 industry experts and is chaired by a member or former member of BAFTA’s Games Committee.

At the meeting, they discuss the longlist, agree the six nominees and choose the overall winner. The published rules describe a deliberative expert panel, not a simple average of scores submitted independently by each juror.
The jury structure also explains why a category’s first-round electorate can differ from its final decision-makers. For example, the Art chapter establishes the Artistic Achievement longlist, but the subsequent nominations and winner are decided by that category’s appointed jury. The same separation applies to Audio, Design, Technical and Performance.

What are voters told to judge?
BAFTA’s campaigning guidance gives members one governing criterion: Excellence. Members are expected to play the games in contention, use their professional expertise and make their decisions on that criterion rather than on a published sales, popularity or marketing score.
Entrants can improve access by supplying codes or other approved routes, but a member is not obliged to purchase a game in order to review it for voting purposes. The guidance does not turn the process into a consumer recommendation or require voters to disclose a separate numerical review.

A jury can discuss what excellence means for audio, design, performance or technical achievement in that category, while the member-voted categories are judged by the wider games electorate under the same overarching standard.
How are the votes authenticated and kept confidential?
BAFTA says all voting is authenticated by appointed scrutineers. This applies to the member stages and the jury stages, providing an independent check that ballots come from the authorised electorate.
The jury winner vote is specifically a blind vote. Winner information is withheld until the ceremony, so jurors do not receive a revealed running tally or an announced result during the decision process. BAFTA’s rules state: “The winner vote is undertaken as a blind vote within the jury.”
Blind voting protects the result from being disclosed before the event; it does not mean the jury is anonymous to BAFTA. Scrutineers authenticate the ballots, while BAFTA controls when the winner information is released.

What changed between recent BAFTA cycles?
BAFTA reviews eligibility, voting and campaigning rules annually through its cross-industry Games Committee. The 2027 cycle therefore cannot be assumed to reproduce an earlier awards year.
The clearest announced change is Evolving Game’s move to member-wide voting for longlisting, nominations and the winner. BAFTA’s 2025 explainer instead identified Best Game and British Game as the member-voted nomination pathway and described specialist juries for the other categories. Comparing those documents shows why a category’s voting route must be checked against the specific year’s rules.
Scale can vary as well. BAFTA reported that 255 games were considered for the 2026 longlist, but it has not published that figure as a fixed cap. The 2027 rules specify six nominees per category and a top-10 longlist, not a universal number of eligible entries.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a developer appeal a BAFTA Games Awards decision?
No formal appeal route is described in the current rules. BAFTA states that decisions made by BAFTA and its juries are final and that it will not correspond about why an entry was or was not nominated.

That finality covers both member and jury outcomes. A developer can meet entry and access requirements for the relevant cycle, but the published process does not provide a post-vote reconsideration, recount request or explanation of an individual ballot.
What does BAFTA not publish about the vote?
Several details readers may expect are not established in the published rules. BAFTA does not provide an individual voter-turnout statistic for the games process, nor does it publish a weighting formula showing how one member’s selection is aggregated into the category result.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The rules also do not release individual jury ballots or a member-by-member rationale for nominations. Public information therefore explains the electorate, stages, jury size, ballot authentication and confidentiality safeguards without exposing how each participant voted.
What does this mean for entrants and players?
For an entrant, the practical priorities are eligibility, complete category entry and reliable access for voters. Reaching a longlist does not guarantee a jury review: it moves the title into the next decision stage, where either the games membership or a nine-to-12-person expert panel makes the next choice.
For players, a BAFTA nomination is not the result of an open popularity poll. It reflects a professional electorate at the longlist stage, with specialist chapters and juries shaping many categories, and with a blind, authenticated jury ballot for those categories’ winners.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are BAFTA Games Awards votes weighted by sales or player numbers?
The published 2027 rules identify Excellence as the judging criterion and do not publish a sales-based weighting system. They also do not disclose the mathematical aggregation formula used for member ballots, so no public claim about sales or turnout weighting can be made.
How many games were considered for the BAFTA Games Awards?
BAFTA said 255 games were considered for the 2026 longlist. That is a cycle-specific figure, not a standing limit; the 2027 rules set a 10-game longlist and six nominees per category instead.
Can jurors reveal their winner before the ceremony?
The jury winner vote is blind, and BAFTA withholds winner information until the ceremony. The rules do not publish individual jury ballots, so the public receives the result rather than a member-by-member vote record.
Does every BAFTA category use the same voters?
No. The Art, Audio, Design, Technical and Performance chapters control those categories’ longlist votes, while the remaining longlists use the games-voting membership. Most categories then move to specialist juries, whereas Best Game, British Game and Evolving Game remain member-voted through the winner.
