For a ranged, dual-crossbow College of Swords Bard, a strong gear path runs from early Bardic Inspiration support to Act III weapon-hit crowd control. These ten items are a build-focused shortlist, not a universal ranking: several compete for the same equipment slot, and the best choice depends on whether you want damage, control, support, or exploration utility.
The combat plan behind the list pairs ranged Slashing Flourish with illusion and enchantment spells. Keep a separate set of equipment for conversations and Sleight of Hand checks, and adjust the picks if you are building a different kind of Bard. This advice reflects the game after Patch 8, which added the College of Glamour and was described by Larian as its final major patch to introduce new content.
How to choose Bard gear
Bards can fill several jobs, so “best” depends on the job you want your character to do. A dual-crossbow College of Swords Bard values ranged accuracy, weapon attacks, and ways to turn a hit into spell-based control. A support-focused Bard may get more from healing, temporary hit points, or an extra Bardic Inspiration use. Dexterity bonuses can also help with checks outside combat.
Bardic Inspiration buffs an ally’s next attack roll, ability check, or saving throw. That makes support items that trigger when you inspire an ally particularly useful. Bards also receive instrument proficiency and choose an instrument when they take their first Bard level, which matters for equipment that restores Inspiration through instrument play. - Account for timing and conditions: items appear across Acts I–III, and some acquisitions depend on story choices or access to particular vendors.
The specific progression and item recommendations below come from a community-authored dual-crossbow guide last edited May 30, 2025. Its “best” judgments are recommendations for that build, not official developer rankings or independently measured performance claims. See the guide’s Act I section and later-act section.
Best Bard items by act
Act I: support, Dexterity, and a critical-hit weapon
- Cap of Curing — support. When you inspire an ally, that ally also regains 1d6 hit points. The guide places it in a locked gilded chest near Alfira in the Druid Grove. It is an early support pick for a Bard who regularly uses Bardic Inspiration.
- Blazer of Benevolence — support and survivability. Inspiring an ally grants the wearer 4 temporary hit points. The guide lists it as a reward for rescuing Volo from the Goblin Camp. It complements the Cap of Curing’s ally healing, though both occupy the chest armor slot and cannot be worn together.
- The Graceful Cloth — Dexterity and checks. It adds 2 Dexterity, up to 20, and grants Cat’s Grace plus bonuses to Dexterity saves and jump distance. The guide says it can be bought from or stolen from Lady Esther on the Rosymorn Monastery Trail. Its Dexterity benefits support both combat and out-of-combat checks.
- Knife of the Undermountain King — weapon. Its listed effects reduce the number needed for a critical hit by 1, reroll low damage dice, and provide advantage against obscured targets. The guide says it can be obtained from A’jak’nir Jeera at Crèche Y’llek and recommends keeping it. Whether it belongs in your setup depends on your weapon choices and how you use your available slots.
Act II: ranged accuracy, crossbows, and Inspiration recovery
- Marksmanship Hat — ranged accuracy. It grants +1 to ranged and thrown attack rolls. The guide says it is sold by or can be stolen from Roah Moonglow at Moonrise Towers, and uses it through most of its build’s progression until late Act III.
- Ne’er Misser — hand crossbow. The guide lists a Magic Missile ability usable once per short rest and says the crossbow’s attacks deal Force damage. Roah Moonglow at Moonrise Towers sells it, or it can be stolen from her. The guide recommends it as the build’s main-hand crossbow for the rest of its progression.
- Hellfire Hand Crossbow — hand crossbow. Looted from Yurgir in the Gauntlet of Shar, it grants Scorching Ray and may inflict Burning on a creature hit while the wielder is hiding or invisible. The guide recommends it as the off-hand crossbow in the dual-crossbow setup.
- Boots of Brilliance — Bardic Inspiration recovery. Playing an instrument restores one Bardic Inspiration slot, once per long rest. The guide places them in a heavy chest near Yurgir in the Gauntlet of Shar and recommends them to gain another use of ranged Slashing Flourish. Their recovery effect is limited to once per long rest.
Act III: initiative, accuracy, and bonus-action control
- Mask of Soul Perception — initiative and accuracy. It grants +2 to attack rolls, initiative rolls, and Perception checks. The guide locates it in a locked chest in Helsik’s room at the Devil’s Fee in the Lower City.
- Band of the Mystic Scoundrel — control. After a weapon hit, it lets you cast illusion or enchantment spells as a bonus action. The guide says it is in a backpack in the Jungle. It directly supports the build’s sequence of landing a weapon hit and following with a control spell, making it a strong late-game choice for that approach.
Support-focused alternatives and story-dependent choices
If you value party support over the dual-crossbow guide’s specific damage-and-control progression, consider Wondrous Gloves, which grant one additional Bardic Inspiration use. The Cap of Curing and Blazer of Benevolence are also support-oriented picks: one adds ally healing when you inspire, while the other gives the wearer temporary hit points. The Bard equipment reference lists these effects.

The Graceful Cloth is not the only Act III armor direction. The guide identifies Bhaalist Armour as an alternative, but access to its vendor requires accepting Bhaal and becoming an Unholy Assassin. That is a substantial story choice, not a straightforward upgrade for every character. Choose between these options based on your build and the story route you are willing to take, rather than treating either as universally best.

The ten picks are a practical route for one ranged College of Swords setup, not an item-performance ranking for every Bard subclass. The underlying guide is community-authored, and the cited references describe item effects rather than reporting controlled damage tests or win rates. Use the shortlist as a way to evaluate roles, slots, acquisition timing, and story requirements for your own character.
