Patch 8 added five spells and a subclass for each of Baldur’s Gate 3’s twelve classes. The strongest picks depend on your build: some options improve nearly any encounter, while others shine only with a particular subclass, target, or party setup. This ranking weighs practical impact, flexibility, control and defense, action economy, and access—not an official or objectively settled tier list. Patch 8, released April 15, 2025, was described by Larian as the game’s “final major patch.”
How to read this ranking
Patch 8’s subclass access begins at different character levels: Cleric, Sorcerer, Paladin, and Warlock choose at level 1; Druid and Wizard at level 2; Barbarian, Bard, Fighter, Monk, Ranger, and Rogue at level 3. Subclass features are therefore ranked for their impact within their intended builds, not as options every character can take. Multiclassing can also delay access to later class or subclass features.
The list combines spells and abilities rather than treating them as interchangeable. Spell access, action costs, target conditions, and encounter setup all affect how useful an option is in practice. When exact figures are not needed to explain a choice, the ranking focuses on the documented role instead of implying a universal damage comparison.
The 14 best Patch 8 spells and abilities
1. Elemental Cleaver — Path of the Giant Barbarian
Elemental Cleaver pairs an elemental weapon effect with a thrown attack that returns, giving the Giant Barbarian a flexible way to threaten enemies at range without abandoning its melee identity. PC Gamer’s Patch 8 build coverage also highlights the subclass’s ability to use varied objects as thrown weapons, which makes the feature useful for improvisational play as well as ordinary combat.

#1 Best Overall
- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!
Its main limitation is access: this is a Path of the Giant feature, not a general-purpose spell. Within that subclass, however, it expands how the Barbarian can contribute when closing to melee is inconvenient.
2. Mantle of Inspiration — College of Glamour Bard
Mantle of Inspiration earns its place through party-wide defensive support. Xbox Wire describes it as protecting allies, giving a Glamour Bard a way to influence the group’s safety rather than spending every turn on personal damage. That makes it valuable when several companions are exposed or need support at once.
It is subclass-locked, and its payoff depends on having allies who can benefit from protection. For a party-support Bard, that role coverage is a major strength.
3. Starry Form — Circle of Stars Druid
Available to the Circle of Stars Druid from level 2, Starry Form provides abilities and bonuses suited to both combat and healing, according to Xbox Wire. That breadth makes it a strong choice for players who want their Druid to adapt to what an encounter demands instead of committing to only one contribution.
Its flexibility is also its key qualification: it belongs to this subclass, and the source overview does not establish exact numerical bonuses or durations. Treat it as a role-flexibility pick rather than a quantified damage upgrade.
4. Shadow Blade — Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard spell lists
Shadow Blade is a build-enabling melee weapon spell for characters who can access it. The BG3 Wiki lists it on the Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard spell lists; Arcane Tricksters and Eldritch Knights can access it through the Wizard spell list at levels 7 and 8, respectively. PC Gamer’s Patch 8 Hexblade build uses it as a central weapon spell and notes that casting it with higher-level slots increases its damage.
The appeal is strongest when a character is built to fight with the conjured weapon. It is not a universal upgrade for a caster who would rather keep distance or use other actions.
5. Curved Shot — Arcane Archer Fighter
Curved Shot can redirect a missed shot, giving the Arcane Archer a way to salvage an attack that would otherwise have no effect. Xbox Wire names it alongside the subclass’s special arrows, including Banishing Arrow and Shadow Arrow. The miss-correction angle is particularly useful because it adds reliability to an attack-focused character.

- Customizable Characters: Create and customize your own unique heroes, shaping their appearances, abilities, and personalities to fit your playstyle.
Curved Shot is part of the Arcane Archer kit, so it is not broadly accessible. Its value is practical rather than spectacular: a missed attack can still create an opportunity to affect another target.
6. Banishing Arrow and Shadow Arrow — Arcane Archer Fighter
The Arcane Archer’s named special arrows broaden its options beyond ordinary weapon damage. Xbox Wire specifically identifies Banishing Arrow and Shadow Arrow, making them useful examples of the subclass’s control and tactical utility. They offer reasons to choose the right effect for a target or battlefield situation rather than repeatedly relying on a basic shot.
These arrows are subclass-specific, and the cited overview does not provide exact mechanics for their effects. Their ranking reflects the added tactical variety, not a claim that either arrow is always the best attack.
7. Hound of Ill Omen — Shadow Magic Sorcerer
Shadow Magic’s Hound of Ill Omen is a summoned threat that can trap enemies, as described by Xbox Wire. That gives the Sorcerer a control tool that can help pin down a dangerous foe while the rest of the party acts.

Its strength is enemy control, not a documented guarantee of a particular damage result.
8. Toll the Dead — Cleric, Warlock, and Wizard
Toll the Dead is a ranged necrotic-damage cantrip with a Wisdom saving throw. The BG3 Wiki lists a range of 18 m / 60 ft and says it deals a lower damage die against a target at full health. It is available to Cleric, Warlock, and Wizard, and can also be acquired by other classes through Magic Initiate.
That full-health condition matters: the cantrip’s appeal changes depending on the target’s state. Its range and multiple class routes make it more accessible than subclass-locked picks, but it is not equally effective in every situation.
9. Mantle of Majesty — College of Glamour Bard
Mantle of Majesty gives the Glamour Bard a control-oriented way to use Command and potentially turn the tide of a fight, according to Xbox Wire. Its place in the ranking comes from expanding the Bard’s influence over enemy actions, complementing a support role rather than simply adding personal damage.
Rank #3
- Contains Enhanced Editions of Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, & Siege of Dragonspear
- Baldur's Gate - Since its original release in 1998, Baldur's Gate has set the standard for Dungeons & Dragons computer roleplaying games.
- Baldur's Gate II - Continue a journey started in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition or create an entirely new character in this isometric Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game.
- Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear - Adds a new chapter to the Bhaalspawn saga. The events occurring between Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II are at last revealed in this 25-hour adventure.
As with Mantle of Inspiration, it is a College of Glamour feature. Its value depends on what the encounter and target allow, so it is best understood as a toolkit option rather than a guaranteed answer to every enemy.
10. Staggering Smite — Hexblade Warlock
Staggering Smite is a high-cost combination of weapon damage and psychic damage with a chance to stagger. The BG3 Wiki describes it as requiring a level-four spell slot, an action, and a bonus action, and notes that Patch 8 makes it exclusive to Hexblade. Those costs make it a specialized burst-and-control option rather than a routine attack.
It ranks below more flexible choices because it consumes substantial resources and is class-locked. When a Hexblade has a reason to commit to a powerful smite, the added control potential is the attraction.
11. Shadow teleportation — Shadow Magic Sorcerer
Xbox Wire describes Shadow Magic Sorcerers as able to teleport between shadows. That mobility can help reposition a caster or respond to changes in the battlefield, adding a movement tool to a subclass that also has enemy-control options.
Recommended Free Tools
The feature is restricted to Shadow Magic, and the overview does not establish exact range or conditions. Its ranking reflects the tactical value of mobility, not an assumed ability to teleport in every environment.
12. Swarmkeeper’s themed swarm effects — Ranger
The Swarmkeeper’s moth, jellyfish, and bee effects offer distinctive damage themes: Xbox Wire describes moths dealing psychic damage, jellyfish electric damage, and bees as offensive options. Having varied effects gives the subclass a recognizable way to add pressure and tailor its presentation to a character concept.
The source overview does not specify the precise damage, range, or control behavior for each effect, so they are best ranked as subclass flavor with offensive utility rather than as a proven best-in-slot damage package.
13. Bursting Sinew — Death Domain Cleric
Bursting Sinew turns a nearby corpse into area damage against nearby enemies, according to Xbox Wire. When the battlefield already contains a suitable corpse and enemies are positioned close enough, it can convert a fallen foe into an offensive opportunity.
Rank #4
Its reliance on both corpse availability and positioning makes it less dependable than effects that can be used in most encounters. It is a situational tool for the Death Domain Cleric, not a reason to expect every fight to provide the setup it needs.
14. Sobering Realisation — Way of the Drunken Master Monk
The Way of the Drunken Master has a distinctive resource loop: Xbox Wire says it can regain Ki through alcohol, is immune to drunkenness, and can deal psychic damage while sobering a target through Sobering Realisation. The combination gives the subclass unusual character and an alternate way to interact with its resource and enemies.
That distinctiveness does not make it the most reliable pick for every player. Its appeal depends on liking the subclass’s theme and on the encounter offering a useful opportunity for the effect.

Booming Blade
Booming Blade is one of the five spells listed as new in Patch 8. It is a melee cantrip and is best considered for builds designed around close-range weapon attacks; it is not automatically a better choice than a character’s other cantrips.
Oath of the Crown Paladin features
Larian’s official Patch 8 coverage characterizes the Oath of the Crown as focused on supporting and protecting allies, sometimes at the Paladin’s own risk. That gives the subclass a clear party-protection role, though the overview does not provide enough precise feature wording to rank a particular Crown ability above the named entries here.
Bladesong — Bladesinging Wizard
Patch 8 added the Bladesinging Wizard and new subclass abilities. Bladesong is the subclass’s central identity, but without exact in-game bonuses and duration established here, its value is safest to describe as a defensive and concentration-support option that asks the Wizard to engage with a more melee-oriented turn. Players should weigh that style against the opportunity cost of using a turn differently.
Patch 8 context and access
Patch 8 added twelve subclasses: Path of the Giant Barbarian, College of Glamour Bard, Death Domain Cleric, Circle of Stars Druid, Arcane Archer Fighter, Way of the Drunken Master Monk, Oath of the Crown Paladin, Swarmkeeper Ranger, Swashbuckler Rogue, Shadow Magic Sorcerer, Hexblade Warlock, and Bladesinging Wizard. Larian also introduced cross-play and Photo Mode, and described the update as the game’s final major patch.
The five spells listed as new in Patch 8 are Booming Blade, Bursting Sinew, Shadow Blade, Staggering Smite, and Toll the Dead. Their practical reach varies sharply: some are general spell choices for several classes, while others are restricted to a subclass or depend on a particular battlefield state. Check the character’s class, level, and spell access before planning a build around any one option.
