To beat Oliver at hide-and-seek in Baldur’s Gate 3, find him once while he is invisible, accept his rematch, then either avoid Mummy, Daddy, and Doggy long enough to reach him or defeat them if they catch you. Both routes can earn the Ring of Shadows.
Where to find Oliver and start the game
Oliver’s hide-and-seek encounter takes place in Act Two at the House in Deep Shadows. Speak with him and agree to play. The game has two rounds: only the second brings in his shadow-like family as pursuers.
How to win round one
- After the game starts, Oliver turns invisible.
- Search the immediate area and move close to where he is hiding. Getting near his invisible model usually counts as finding him, even if you do not clearly see him.
- When Oliver offers another round, accept. This starts the harder round.
The first round can feel inconsistent because Oliver is invisible and proximity interactions matter; automatic Perception checks may not reliably settle the search.
How to finish round two without combat
In the rematch, Oliver disappears again while Mummy, Daddy, and Doggy search for your party. Your goal is to avoid their detection and get back to Oliver so you can speak with him.

- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. - Use Hide, stealth, concealment, or an invisibility effect to move toward the house.
- Stay out of the family’s sight as you search for Oliver.
- Reach Oliver and speak with him to finish the round without fighting.
What to do if the family spots you
Being detected can trigger combat with Mummy, Daddy, and Doggy. Defeat them, then continue the encounter: Oliver still awards the Ring of Shadows, so a failed stealth attempt does not cost you the reward.
Stealth or combat: which route should you choose?
| Approach | What it involves | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stealth | Avoid detection and reach Oliver to talk. | Avoids the family fight; requires careful movement or concealment. |
| Combat fallback | Fight Mummy, Daddy, and Doggy after being spotted. | Uses combat resources, but still allows you to earn the Ring of Shadows. |
How this encounter fits the Shadow Curse quest
Winning hide-and-seek is a local encounter, not the end of Oliver’s story. His connection to Thaniel belongs to the broader “Lift the Shadow Curse” quest; completing that thread ultimately requires returning to Oliver and persuading him to reunite with Thaniel.
