To solve the Chamber of Strategy in Baldur’s Gate 3, match your lanceboard to one of the three documented layouts below, then play its checkmate sequence. The puzzle is in the Wyrmway and asks you to checkmate Black in two moves; a solution for a different board layout may not work. If you prefer a reported shortcut, walkthroughs say lightning damage can destroy the Black King piece and pass the trial.
Check your board before moving
The Chamber of Strategy is one of the four Wyrmway trials. Its lanceboard challenge calls for checkmate in two moves, but the board can start in one of three documented positions. Compare the pieces on your screen with the setups below before choosing a line. The bg3.wiki Wyrmway page lists the positions and solutions.
Chess notation uses standard coordinates: for example, Rg8+ means move a rook to g8 and give check; # marks checkmate. If you do not use chess notation often, interact with a piece to display its legal moves, as described by the bg3.wiki The Wyrmway page.
Choose the solution that matches your layout
Setup 1: rook check

- Move the rook to g8: Rg8+.
- If Black’s bishop captures the rook, play Qg7#. If the king retreats to h7 instead, play Nf6#.
Setup 2: queen check
Match this position: 5k2/5p2/2q1pQ2/pb6/1p5P/3R2P1/5P2/5K2 w - - 0 1.
- Play Qh8+.
- After the king moves to e7, play Qd8#.
Setup 3: queen captures
Match this position: 4r2k/2p3p1/Q6p/4Bp2/3q1P2/8/2P1K1PP/8 w - - 0 1.

Can you bypass the chess puzzle with lightning?
GameSpot and Prima Games report that dealing lightning damage to the Black King piece can destroy it and pass the trial. Prima Games names Witch Bolt as one option; GameSpot describes using lightning spells and destroying the piece. These are walkthrough-reported methods, not an official developer confirmation. The community wiki reports three attempts before failure and notes that Gale can offer a hint if he is present; accepting it can highlight an appropriate move. Failing a trial can lead to hostilities during the wider Wyrmway sequence, according to the quest page. Use the legal-move indicators and verify the board against a listed setup before committing to a move.
