If you want a survival game where building a base is central and you can play without anyone else, five titles fit that brief on their official Steam listings: Subnautica, Valheim, Sons Of The Forest, Grounded, and Raft. They differ sharply in tone and in what the base does for you. Subnautica is a quiet underwater exploration game, Valheim ties construction to boss progression, Sons Of The Forest adds survival horror, Grounded offers a backyard-scale world, and Raft builds its base as a moving raft. The list below is a preference-led shortlist based on store descriptions, not a tested ranking.
How this shortlist was put together
This article is based on the official Steam store listings for each game, reviewed in early October 2026. Store pages describe features and platform support; they do not measure how well a base works in play, how hard a game is, or how many players prefer it. No hands-on testing was done for this piece, so the order below is a fit guide, not a verdict on quality. Steam user reviews and scores change constantly and were not used to rank these games. Prices and regional availability also vary, so check your own storefront before buying.
The shortlist
Subnautica: exploration with a habitat you build underwater
The Steam listing for Subnautica describes crafting equipment and piloting submarines while exploring an alien underwater world, and it is listed as single-player with the base-building tag. The base here is a habitat you construct in an environment that is hostile to you, so the building is tied to exploration: you leave to gather materials and return to something you have built. Choose it if you want a focused, solitary loop of discovery rather than a sprawling sandbox. The reviewed listing does not state co-op support, so do not assume it either way.
Valheim: a base that has to hold up against bosses
Valheim’s Steam listing describes a survival game for 1 to 10 players and lists both single-player and online co-op. Its description connects base construction to defense, structural integrity, comfort, crafting, and preparation for regional bosses. The official wording is direct: “Raise Viking longhouses and build bases that offer reprieve from the dangers ahead.” That is the strongest case in this list for a base that serves a purpose beyond storage: you build to survive the next region, then return to improve what you have. It suits players who want a broad sandbox and a reason to revisit a structure they have already built.
#1 Best Overall
- COLONY SURVIVAL: Plan and strategize as you attempt to have the most survivors on the Moon while events that kill your people keep happening.
- LIFE & DEATH: During the game you will be drawing cards, some bad and some good that will determine the fate of your colony. Some will give you an advantage to surviving, while others will kill off some of your colony.
- OUT TO SPACE: Take the trek out to the newly colonized moon, try to outlast the other colonies and control the moon yourselves.
- BE HUMANITIES CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT: Humanity is venturing into the stars, leaving Earth behind to colonize new planets. Be the greatest city of humanities history as you survive the treacherous moon.
- PLAY TIME: Moon Colony Bloodbath is perfect for 1-5 Players, takes 45-90 minutes, and for ages 14+.
Sons Of The Forest: construction under survival horror
The Sons Of The Forest listing shows single-player and online co-op. Its description presents player-directed survival, building that grows from a cabin into a compound, seasonal pressure on food and resources, and defense. The official line is short: “Survive alone, or with friends.” This is the best fit for readers who want construction, but it is not a neutral pick. The developer’s content notice includes intense violence, blood and gore, horror themes, and occasional nudity. If those elements would put you off, skip this one.
Grounded: a backyard-scale survival world
The Grounded listing identifies single-player availability and survival-crafting and base-building elements. Its distinguishing feature is the setting: a backyard-scale world, rather than an island, cave system, or alien planet. The reviewed listing does not give enough detail to compare its difficulty, the depth of its building system, or how its progression works, so those are not claimed here. Read the current listing before deciding how much building depth you need.

Raft: a base that moves
Raft’s Steam listing frames the game around survival and developing a raft, which gives it a distinct premise: your base is the vehicle you keep expanding across open water. That moving base is the main reason to consider it. The reviewed listing does not confirm solo-specific features or platform details for every edition, so check the exact edition and platform you are buying before you rely on single-player play.

- #1 Backed Solo Operative Card Game of All-Time on Kickstarter!
- Dark Fantasy
| Game | Single-player listed | Online co-op listed | Role of the base | Tone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Subnautica | Yes | Not stated | Underwater habitat tied to exploration and submarine travel | Solitary exploration of an alien underwater world |
| Valheim | Yes | Yes, 1 to 10 players | Defense, structural integrity, comfort, and boss preparation | Viking sandbox with regional bosses |
| Sons Of The Forest | Yes | Yes | Cabin grows into a compound that must defend against threats | Survival horror with mature content |
| Grounded | Yes | Not stated | Survival-crafting base within a backyard-scale world | Survival at small scale; depth not compared here |
| Raft | Not confirmed in the reviewed listing | Not confirmed in the reviewed listing | Mobile base built from a raft | Survival built around a moving raft |
How to choose between them
- If you want the base to matter for progression: Valheim connects building to defense and boss preparation more explicitly than the other listings.
- If you want a calm, focused exploration loop: Subnautica is the clearest solo-first choice here, built around crafting, submarines, and an underwater setting.
- If you want construction and seasonal pressure but can handle horror: Sons Of The Forest offers the most building ambition in this group, with the content caveat above.
- If you want a smaller, grounded setting: Grounded is worth a look, but confirm its building depth on its current listing.
- If the moving base appeals most: Raft is distinct, but verify solo and platform details before you buy.
Bottom line
For a solo player who wants building to be central, Subnautica and Valheim are the most straightforward starting points, with Subnautica suited to quiet exploration and Valheim to a base that has to defend against progression threats. Sons Of The Forest is the most ambitious build-focused option, but only for players comfortable with its horror and mature content. Grounded and Raft are reasonable picks for specific tastes, but their current listings should be checked before you commit.
