You can start Final Fantasy VII Rebirth without playing Remake first, and you do not need to clear every side activity to enjoy it. To make the opening hours easier, learn the ATB-and-switching combat loop, use Synergy options when they suit your party, and treat materia and exploration as tools you can adapt at your own pace.
Can you play Rebirth without playing Remake first?
Yes. PlayStation describes Rebirth as a standalone experience that can be enjoyed as a first entry. The story follows the events of Remake, so playing that game provides context, but it is not a prerequisite for starting.
Do not expect character progression to transfer. Director Naoki Hamaguchi explains that each game is balanced independently: “Because of this, each game’s balancing is done independently and a player’s levels and abilities will not carry over from one game to the next.” Prior-save bonuses are separate from carrying over levels and abilities. Read the PlayStation.Blog interview with Hamaguchi.
How do combat and ATB work?
Combat mixes real-time movement and attacks with command-based actions. Fighting builds ATB, which you spend on abilities, spells, items, and other commands. You can switch characters instantly; doing so lets you take direct control of a different role rather than relying on the AI-controlled party to make every tactical choice. Equipment and materia affect stats, skills, and the actions available to each character. PlayStation’s official game page outlines these systems.
#1 Best Overall
- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: o "Graphics Mode" prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics o "Performance Mode" prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable “Photo Mode”
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
- Build ATB. Attack and stay involved in the fight until you have a charge for a command.
- Spend it with a purpose. Choose an ability, spell, item, or other command that suits the situation instead of saving every charge indefinitely.
- Switch characters. Try each party member directly to learn their role and make timely tactical choices.
- Adjust to the encounter. Change equipment or materia when your current options do not suit the enemy or challenge.
If you would rather make combat feel more menu-led, choose Classic mode. PlayStation says it automates real-time attacking and defending while leaving command choices to you. It changes how you handle moment-to-moment fighting, not the underlying need to make tactical choices.
How should you use Synergy?
Synergy Skills and Synergy Abilities let characters combine actions, adding paired options to combat. Hamaguchi describes Synergy commands and abilities as using a gauge charge, while skill trees can unlock abilities. The options available depend on your roster and progression, so focus on the pairings and abilities you have actually unlocked rather than assuming every combination is ready from the start. Hamaguchi discusses Synergy and progression in the interview.

- Great Gift Idea.
- Satisfaction Ensured.
- Produced with the highest grade materials
- Great for everyday use.
As a beginner, try the Synergy choices shown in your menus and skill trees, then notice which pairings fit your approach. A Synergy action is an extra option, not a reason to ignore ATB commands, character switching, or the needs of the current fight.
What party and materia setup should you use?
There is no single universally best party or materia loadout established for every encounter. Weapons, armor, accessories, materia, skill trees, and character pairings all offer ways to customize your team. Instead of chasing a fixed build, keep the party’s available options understandable and adjust them when a fight exposes a gap.

Rank #3
- Make sure your loadout includes healing and elemental options you expect to need.
- Use materia to give characters abilities that complement the way you want to control them.
- Try different pairings as Synergy options become available.
- If a fight is difficult, reassess equipment and materia rather than assuming the same setup must work everywhere.
For a gentler introduction, the specialist guide at RPG Site recommends practicing in tutorial battles and Chadley’s VR tutorials. It also suggests blocking, switching characters, and using Synergy Skills to manage pressure, including when enemies are distant or airborne. These are practical suggestions, not rules that make one character or build mandatory.
Which exploration activities are worth doing?
Exploration is a substantial part of Rebirth, but optional content is a choice, not a completion requirement. Regions offer activities such as side quests, optional battles, and minigames. Hamaguchi notes that the world map includes locations not used in the main story alone; he also says players can return to regions after progressing through the main quest. You can follow the story when you want to move on without assuming every region is a one-time opportunity.

- The Amazon Exclusive Edition includes a FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH PS5 controller skin (inside the case) featuring Cloud and Sephiroth. This PS5 controller skin provides full coverage without buttons or sensor interference.
- An Expansive World: As the party searches for Sephiroth, explore the beautiful, expansive regions of the world and open up new areas to discover through unique forms of transportation
- Deepen their relationships to unleash powerful team based combos
- An Evolved Battle System: Combine strategic thinking with thrilling action combat alongside your comrades, including newly added characters
- Beyond the Walls of Fate: In this standalone adventure for fans and newcomers, Cloud and his comrades venture across the planet, their fates unwritten, making each step outside the dystopian city of Midgar fresh and mysterious
Chocobos have different capabilities in different regions, and those abilities can change how you travel. Hamaguchi gives mountain chocobos that climb sheer cliffs and sky chocobos that fly as examples. Exploring with the regional chocobo can open routes that ordinary movement cannot.
For extra practical guidance, RPG Site recommends crafting as you gather materials, since some crafted consumables can help early, and collecting material clusters while riding chocobos. Treat crafting as a useful option rather than a requirement to gather everything. That guide also notes that Magnify’s value changes as you progress, so do not assume it is always the right early-game choice.

How should you pace a first playthrough?
Choose a pace that keeps the systems manageable. If combat feels busy, use Classic mode or spend time in tutorials. If a party member’s role is unclear, switch to that character and try their commands. If an optional activity is not interesting, return to the main story and revisit regional content later. The game supports both focused story progress and time spent exploring, so you do not need to treat every checklist as an obligation.
