Battlefield REDSEC launched on October 28, 2025, alongside Battlefield 6 Season 1. It is a free-to-play download for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; you do not need to buy the separate Battlefield 6 full game to play it.
When did Battlefield REDSEC come out?
Electronic Arts announced REDSEC’s launch on October 28, 2025. The date is historical, not an upcoming release. EA’s launch announcement introduced it as a free-to-play Battlefield experience released alongside Season 1 of Battlefield 6.
REDSEC is set in Fort Lyndon and brings Battlefield’s combat to a standalone experience. EA’s REDSEC site continued to publish game updates and other coverage in 2026, including updates in September and a Season 5 look-ahead on October 1. Those posts show that the game continued to receive live updates after launch, but do not by themselves establish a complete current feature list.
Is Battlefield REDSEC free to play?
Yes. REDSEC is free to play and separately downloadable. An EA Account and a persistent internet connection are required, according to EA Help. The paid Battlefield 6 full game is a separate purchase; EA’s Battlefield 6 purchase page lists its digital licenses, but buying one is not a prerequisite for downloading REDSEC.

EA notes one regional exception: on PlayStation systems in Germany, PlayStation Plus is required to download REDSEC components because of local age restrictions and content regulations. That requirement does not apply universally to PlayStation players.

What does REDSEC include?
At launch, EA described REDSEC as featuring a 100-player Battle Royale, the squad-based Gauntlet mode and access to Portal. The 100-player figure is EA’s launch description of the Battle Royale format, not a separate performance or player-count measurement.
Battle Royale
EA’s launch announcement described players dropping into Fort Lyndon in a 100-player Battle Royale. The announcement framed the mode as REDSEC’s take on the genre; it is a launch-era description, not a guarantee that every current playlist or match uses the same format.

Gauntlet
At launch, Gauntlet was described as an eight-team competition, with four players per squad and five-minute windows to complete mission objectives. These figures explain that launch format; they should not be read as specifications for other REDSEC modes.
Portal
EA also included Portal access in its launch description, presenting it as another way for players to engage with Battlefield’s tools and experiences. EA Help’s current summary lists Battle Royale, Ranked and Portal, while the launch announcement separately named Gauntlet. These are descriptions from different points in the game’s life, so the launch lineup and the current support-page summary are not identical lists.

EA Help says REDSEC players can squad up with REDSEC and Battlefield 6 players across supported platforms and REDSEC modes. This cross-game squad option does not mean that the paid Battlefield 6 game is required to access REDSEC.
