Neither Star Wars Battlefront II is simply “better.” The 2005 Pandemic Studios game is the stronger choice for Galactic Conquest’s turn-based fleet strategy, adjustable offline battles, the 501st campaign and space missions that let pilots board enemy ships. Electronic Arts’ 2017 release is the better fit for players who want all three film eras, class and hero customization, large objective modes, Starfighter Assault, Supremacy, Co-Op and offline AI missions. They share a name but are fundamentally different designs, so the right purchase depends on whether you value strategic sandbox play or a broader modern multiplayer structure.

What are the 2005 and 2017 Battlefront II games?

They are separate games made by different studios, not editions of the same release. Pandemic Studios developed the 2005 classic, which appeared on Steam on November 1, 2005. Electronic Arts announced a worldwide launch of its DICE-, Motive- and Criterion-developed Battlefront II for November 17, 2017. A storefront showing November 16 in a particular region should not be treated as the worldwide release date.

The original’s design is built around selectable scenarios, campaigns and a strategic layer. The later game is structured around class-based multiplayer, cinematic objectives, hero units and an evolving live-service progression system. Shared characters and locations can make screenshots look familiar, but the two games answer different questions about what a Battlefront sequel should be.

Which game has the better offline strategy sandbox?

Battlefront II (2005) wins decisively if you want a campaign-like offline sandbox. Its Galactic Conquest mode places turn-based fleet movement, planet capture, recruitment and bonuses around the real-time battles. The original manual describes the goal as using strategy to take control of planets and dominate the galaxy; that strategic map is the feature the 2017 game never reproduces.

How Galactic Conquest works in 2005

You move a faction fleet between planets, choose where to attack, recruit units and fight the resulting ground or space engagement. Victories and bonuses influence the next turn, so a sequence of matches has a campaign shape even when you are not following a scripted story. The manual’s Galactic Conquest documentation is the authoritative description of those rules.

That structure gives the 2005 game unusually strong replay value for a single-player title: the map, faction and difficulty choices change the order and pressure of battles. Instant Action complements it with adjustable battle settings, letting you select locations, eras, teams and rules without committing to the strategic campaign.

What replaces it in 2017?

Supremacy is the closest 2017 mode in name and scale, but it is not Galactic Conquest. It is an objective-driven multiplayer mode rather than a turn-based fleet map with recruitment and planetary bonuses. If your must-have feature is deciding which world to invade next, only the 2005 game meets that requirement.

How do the multiplayer modes differ?

The 2017 release offers the wider set of modern objective modes, while 2005 offers simpler battles with more direct control over scenarios. EA’s later game spans the prequel, original and sequel film eras and includes Galactic Assault, Starfighter Assault, Supremacy and Co-Op. The original focuses on four factions, six soldier classes and battle formats that can be tuned through Instant Action.

2017’s objective structure

Galactic Assault uses large, staged objectives; the 2017-era manual specifies 20 players against 20 players in that mode, while EA’s launch announcement described modes supporting up to 40 players. Starfighter Assault gives specialized starfighters distinct roles and objective chains instead of treating every space match as a simple team deathmatch. Supremacy adds large-scale ground objectives, and Co-Op allows a small group to fight AI across the game’s eras.

These modes make 2017 the natural choice if you want a curated sequence of pushes, defenses and vehicle objectives with heroes appearing inside the same battle. They also provide a clearer route into the sequel-era settings that the 2005 game predates.

2005’s battle flexibility

The classic does not have the later game’s class-card progression or cinematic objective scripting, but its Instant Action settings let you alter the practical shape of a match. You can choose the era, faction, map and battle conditions, then replay the same location under a different tactical constraint. Steam’s publisher-supplied listing states a supported maximum of up to 64 players for online battles; that is a capacity figure, not a guarantee that a 64-player lobby is available in October 2026.

Can you board enemy ships in Battlefront II?

Yes in the 2005 game; do not assume the same mechanic in ordinary 2017 starfighter matches. The classic’s store description explicitly says that a pilot can land on an enemy Star Destroyer and continue fighting inside it. That creates a two-stage space battle: win the approach, breach the opposing ship and damage it from within.

EA’s documentation for 2017 instead describes Starfighter Assault as objective-based combat with specialized craft and customization. It does not establish the classic’s normal pilot-lands-and-boards flow, so the 2005 release is the clear choice if boarding enemy capital ships is central to your decision.

Which campaign is better for your preferred Star Wars story?

There is no objective winner because the campaigns use different perspectives and time periods. The 2005 campaign follows the 501st Legion through the Empire’s rise. The 2017 story follows Iden Versio and Inferno Squad after Return of the Jedi, while its multiplayer roster reaches across all three film eras.

Battlefront II (2005): the 501st and the Empire

The original presents battles through the soldiers of the 501st. Its campaign framing connects individual objectives to the Republic-to-Empire transition, giving the classic trilogy and prequel settings a military-history arc. If you want the feeling of serving through a changing regime rather than following one named commander, this is the more suitable premise.

Battlefront II (2017): Iden Versio and Inferno Squad

The later campaign centers on Iden Versio and Inferno Squad in the period after Return of the Jedi. It provides a character-led viewpoint tied to the sequel-era conflict, and the broader game includes heroes, locations and units from the prequel, original and sequel films. Choose it when sequel-era context and a named protagonist matter more than the 501st chronicle.

How do classes, heroes and progression compare?

2017 has the deeper loadout and progression system; 2005 has the more straightforward class selection. EA’s 2017 manual identifies four trooper classes and three starfighter classes, with Star Cards and hero customization shaping how those classes perform. The 2005 listing describes six soldier classes across four factions, but it does not use the later card-based build system.

2005’s fixed battlefield roles

The classic’s classes are chosen for the match rather than developed through a long account progression track. That keeps the decision local to the battle: pick the role that fits the map and objective, then fight. It is easier to understand and less dependent on unlocking a preferred build, although it offers fewer long-term customization decisions.

2017’s Star Cards and class builds

In 2017, Star Cards and class choices let you tune weapons, abilities and play roles. Heroes and vehicles also have their own customization paths. This creates more room to specialize, but it means the game has more progression systems to learn before every class feels interchangeable with another player’s setup.

Is Battlefront II (2017) pay to win?

The answer depends on which point in the game’s history you mean. Before launch, EA temporarily disabled in-game purchases after concerns that the proposed system could grant unfair advantages. In March 2018, EA redesigned progression so gameplay-affecting Star Cards could be earned through play, while purchasable Crystals were directed toward appearances.

Therefore, do not describe the launch-era Crates and purchase model as the current design, and do not claim that all cosmetic purchases disappeared. The accurate distinction is that the March 2018 redesign changed how gameplay-affecting progression was obtained; cosmetic items remained a separate purchase category. EA’s pre-launch announcement records the original suspension, and its progression update documents the later redesign.

Can you play either game offline?

Both support offline play, but their offline features and platform limits differ. The 2005 game’s Galactic Conquest, Instant Action and campaign are the strongest offline reasons to choose it. EA later added offline AI missions to 2017’s Instant Action, so it is incorrect to call the 2017 release online-only.

Offline options in 2005

You can play the 501st campaign, Galactic Conquest and adjustable Instant Action without relying on a live multiplayer population. That makes the classic the safer choice for a long-term solo library, especially if your priority is replaying maps and campaigns rather than joining a current lobby.

Offline options in 2017

Instant Action’s AI missions provide offline battles in the 2017 game. Lucasfilm identifies two-player offline split-screen for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One; that qualification does not extend the same feature to the PC version. Treat console split-screen and PC local play as separate questions when choosing a platform.

Which editions and platforms should you buy?

Edition details matter more than the shared title suggests. The classic is sold separately on Steam and GOG for PC. GOG states that its installer can be installed offline without GOG Galaxy, while Galaxy is required for that edition’s online multiplayer; it also documents cross-play support with Steam. Steam’s 2017 Celebration Edition requires an EA Account and lists cosmetic inclusions, with an exclusion for customization released after December 20, 2019.

Buying the 2005 PC game

A physical search may use the exact phrase Star Wars Battlefront II 2005 PC DVD-ROM. The original manual tells owners to insert the DVD in a DVD-ROM drive, which confirms the format but does not guarantee that a particular old disc will install or run on every modern PC. A digital classic listing avoids the need for an optical drive, but check the platform’s current account and multiplayer requirements before purchase.

Buying the 2017 game

The 2017 game is available on PC through Steam and on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. A search for Star Wars Battlefront II 2017 PS4 physical disc can help locate a console copy, but verify the format and edition of any listing rather than assuming it includes Celebration Edition cosmetics. The Steam listing’s EA Account requirement is a practical consideration for anyone seeking the least account-dependent PC purchase.

What is the Classic Collection?

Aspyr’s Classic Collection is a separate route to the older Battlefront games on newer consoles. It should not be confused with the original 2005 PC DVD or with the 2017 release. Aspyr documents split-screen support for that collection, while Lucasfilm’s 2017 split-screen qualification applies specifically to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

How large are the online battles, and what does that tell you in 2026?

The documented capacities describe design targets, not current matchmaking conditions. EA’s 2017 materials cite up to 40 players in certain modes, and the period manual specifies 20 versus 20 for Galactic Assault. The classic’s Steam listing cites up to 64 players. None of those figures proves that a full lobby is easy to find now.

EA’s April 2020 development letter said the team was “moving away from delivering regular content updates” after more than two years of support, and EA counted 25 free content updates by that point. The letter anticipated continued servers and support at the time, but it is not a guarantee of October 2026 uptime. No comparable, verified cross-platform active-player or matchmaking figure establishes that one game currently has the healthier population.

Which Battlefront II should you buy?

Use the feature that you would miss most as the deciding test:

  • Choose 2005 for Galactic Conquest’s fleet-and-planet decisions, adjustable Instant Action, the 501st campaign, direct class selection and space battles that explicitly include boarding enemy ships.
  • Choose 2017 for prequel, original and sequel-era content, Galactic Assault, Starfighter Assault, Supremacy, Co-Op, hero and class customization, and offline AI missions added to Instant Action.
  • Choose based on platform if couch co-op is essential: 2017’s documented two-player offline split-screen is on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, while the Classic Collection is a distinct console product.
  • Choose the 2005 GOG edition when an offline installer and lower account dependence matter most on PC; its online multiplayer still requires GOG Galaxy. Choose the 2017 Steam edition only if an EA Account is acceptable.

For most players asking for “the better game,” the honest answer is a preference split rather than a ranking. The 2005 release is the more distinctive strategy-and-sandbox package; the 2017 release is the more expansive era-spanning objective shooter. Buying both is reasonable when you want those two different experiences, but neither substitutes for the other.

How this comparison separates the two games

The comparison uses documented design differences rather than performance claims or firsthand testing: strategic modes and offline structure, space-combat mechanics, campaign perspective, class and progression systems, era coverage, platform requirements, monetization changes and the limits of historical player-capacity figures. Where a source gives a launch-era number or a 2020 support expectation, it is labeled as historical instead of being presented as a current measurement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the GOG version of Battlefront II (2005) play with Steam owners?

GOG documents cross-play support between its classic edition and Steam. Its offline installer does not require GOG Galaxy, but the GOG edition does require Galaxy for online multiplayer.

What does the 2017 Celebration Edition actually include?

Steam lists cosmetic inclusions for the Celebration Edition, but it excludes customization released after December 20, 2019. An EA Account is required for the Steam version, so confirm the edition details before buying a key or physical copy.

Are the 2005 game’s 64-player matches still populated?

The 64-player figure is a publisher-supplied maximum, not a current activity report. No verified October 2026 cross-platform population comparison establishes how often full matches are available.

Does Battlefront II (2017) support split-screen on PC?

The documented two-player offline split-screen feature is limited to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Do not infer PC split-screen support from the console descriptions.

Is the Classic Collection the same product as the 2005 PC release?

No. It is a separate Aspyr collection for newer consoles, with its own support details. The original 2005 PC DVD, Steam edition and GOG edition remain distinct products.
