Bayle’s lore: the traitor who wounded Placidusax
Bayle is not simply another ancient dragon waiting at the end of a mountain. He is described as a legendary “dread” dragon and the ancestor of the drakes—the lesser dragons encountered throughout the game world.
His defining act was a rebellion against the ancient dragon order. Bayle turned on Dragonlord Placidusax, and the two fought a catastrophic battle. Both survived, but neither emerged whole: Placidusax was grievously wounded, while Bayle lost multiple limbs and wings before fleeing to Jagged Peak. The ruined body visible in the arena is therefore part of the story, not just a visual design choice.

This betrayal explains why Bayle is at the center of the Dragon Communion storyline. Florissax’s account presents Bayle and his bloodline as the targets of a punishment that became a tradition: mortals were encouraged to hunt drakes, consume their hearts, and seek draconic power through Dragon Communion. The drakes are consequently more than random field bosses. They are Bayle’s bloodline and the principal prey created by the conflict surrounding him.
The Talisman of the Dread describes Bayle as a terrible harbinger whose challenge to Placidusax ended in mutual injury. The Heart of Bayle reinforces the idea that his power is unusually difficult to subjugate. Taken together, these descriptions portray Bayle as a surviving remnant of an older draconic age—a tyrant and traitor whose resistance continued long after the original battle.
Bayle and the people pursuing him
- Dragonlord Placidusax: Bayle’s former enemy and the ancient dragon lord whom Bayle betrayed and wounded. The conflict is the historical foundation of the Jagged Peak hunt.
- Florissax, the Dragon Communion Priestess: a servant of Placidusax who becomes involved in the effort to destroy Bayle and preserve the purpose of Dragon Communion.
- Drake Warrior Igon: a mortal dragon hunter who was physically and psychologically broken after confronting Bayle. His storyline leads toward one final attempt to face the dragon.
- The drakes: Bayle’s descendants and the creatures hunted by mortals seeking draconic power.
How to summon Igon for the Bayle fight
Drake Warrior Igon can be summoned inside Bayle’s arena if you have progressed the relevant quest and obtained Igon’s Furled Finger. The item is specifically tied to Bayle, and Igon’s summon sign appears in the arena rather than functioning like a generic multiplayer summon.

The practical checklist is:
- Follow the Jagged Peak dragon-hunt storyline far enough to receive Igon’s Furled Finger.
- Reach Bayle’s arena at the summit of Jagged Peak.
- Look for Igon’s summon sign inside the arena and activate it before committing to the fight.
Do not confuse the quest item with an automatic guarantee that the sign will be visible on every attempt. The encounter has a state-dependent opening behavior: on the first attempt in a playthrough, Bayle does not begin behind a conventional fog wall, and Igon’s sign may not immediately appear even when the quest item has been obtained. Subsequent attempts use a different opening setup. If Igon is missing, check that the Jagged Peak quest progression is complete, search inside the arena rather than outside the entrance, and account for this first-attempt behavior before assuming the quest has failed.
Igon is more than optional combat assistance. His summon is the mechanical expression of his story: he is seeking a final confrontation with the dragon that destroyed him. For a first clear, progressing his quest is worthwhile even if you ultimately choose to fight Bayle alone.
What to expect in Bayle’s boss fight
Bayle combines the familiar danger of a dragon with a distinctive flame-lightning identity. His attacks include bites, claws, talons, pounces, breath attacks, large area effects, and lightning-infused fire. The safest general approach is to treat the fight as a positioning and timing encounter rather than relying on a single damage type or a fixed “best” tactic.
His moveset is broad enough that the important preparation is recognizing the fight’s shape:
- Close-range pressure: Bayle uses bites, claws, talons, and pounces when you remain near him.
- Flame-lightning breath and area attacks: his elemental attacks cover substantial space and punish standing in the same position for too long.
- Large body and shifting hit locations: his size can make the camera and attack direction difficult to read, particularly when he turns or rises.
- A stronger aerial phase: after losing enough health, Bayle gains flame-lightning wings and takes to the air.
Phase one
At the start, Bayle is primarily grounded. He alternates physical attacks with flame-lightning abilities, forcing you to watch both his limbs and the area around his body. Do not assume that being underneath or beside him automatically makes you safe: his claws, talons, pounces, and area attacks can still reach those positions.

- Whisper quiet gaming switches – Nearly silent use for 20 million low friction keypresses
- Premium magnetic wrist rest – Provides full palm support and comfort

Use the opening phase to learn which attacks give you a reliable punish window on your build. Short, controlled attacks are generally less risky than committing to a long animation whenever Bayle is not clearly recovering. Keep enough stamina or another defensive resource available to escape rather than spending the entire bar on one attack sequence.
Phase two
After taking sufficient damage, Bayle sprouts flame-lightning wings and becomes more mobile. He takes to the air, launches fiery projectiles, and returns with more empowered attacks that can produce directional lightning effects.
The phase transition changes the fight’s rhythm. Track Bayle’s position instead of continuing an attack string after he leaves the ground, and be ready to move when the return attack or lightning pattern begins. The visual spectacle can obscure the actual danger: the important question is where the attack will travel and which area will remain unsafe after the initial impact.
Exact attack behavior can depend on the game version. In particular, patch 1.14 fixed cases involving Bayle’s Tyranny and attacks that failed to hit multiple enemies or could pass through certain terrain. Avoid treating pre-patch videos or older optimization advice as universal current behavior.
Practical preparation without a one-size-fits-all build
The available research supports several reliable preparation principles, but not a universal best build or precise difficulty ranking. Bayle’s attacks are a mixture of physical, fire, lightning, aerial, and area damage, so preparation should focus on surviving the attacks you are actually failing to read.

- Upgrade your character and weapons: Bayle is an end-of-route optional boss, so entering with unfinished upgrades turns every mistake into a much larger problem.
- Use the Shadow Realm’s progression system: if your damage or survivability feels unusually low, review your Scadutree and other Realm of Shadow progression rather than assuming the answer is a different weapon.
- Learn the transition: save enough healing and resources for the winged phase instead of treating the first half as a race to deal maximum damage.
- Consider Igon: his sign gives you a quest-linked cooperator and can create opportunities to attack while Bayle’s attention shifts. It also lets you experience the intended personal stakes of the encounter.
- Do not build around unverified pre-patch claims: attack paths and spell behavior may have changed, especially for Bayle-related incantations.

Bayle’s reward: the Heart of Bayle
Defeating Bayle awards the Heart of Bayle, not a conventional Remembrance. Take the heart to the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion to exchange it for one of two unique Dragon Communion incantations:
| Incantation | What it does | Who should consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Bayle’s Flame Lightning | Channels Bayle’s arm and talon into a flame-lightning attack. | Players who want a direct, aggressive manifestation of Bayle’s limb and talon. |
| Bayle’s Tyranny | Channels Bayle’s head into a powerful roar, heatwave, and fiery eruptions. | Players who prefer a roar and area-damage effect that represents Bayle’s oppressive presence. |
The choice is mutually exclusive for that playthrough. The Heart of Bayle cannot be duplicated through the normal Remembrance systems, so decide before exchanging it. Both spells require high Arcane rather than following a conventional Faith-and-Arcane split, making them particularly relevant to Dragon Communion and Arcane-oriented characters.
Which Bayle incantation should you choose?
There is no responsible universal answer without specifying your build, current patch, and preferred combat range. Choose Bayle’s Flame Lightning if you want the arm-and-talon attack. Choose Bayle’s Tyranny if you want the head-based roar, heatwave, and fiery eruptions. Compare the requirements and scaling with the rest of your incantations before spending the heart; the more powerful-looking option is not automatically the better fit for every Arcane character.

The Talisman of the Dread increases the potency of magma-causing skills, sorceries, and incantations by 15%. Its eligible effects specifically include Bayle’s Tyranny.
It is not obtained from Bayle’s arena. The talisman is found at Elder’s Hovel in Gravesite Plain. This makes it a useful follow-up for a character planning to use Bayle’s Tyranny, but it is separate from the boss reward and should not be confused with the Heart of Bayle.

Bayle’s place in the DLC
Bayle ties together several otherwise separate-looking ideas in Shadow of the Erdtree:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- His betrayal of Placidusax explains the ancient dragon conflict.
- His survival and retreat to Jagged Peak explain why the mountain becomes the destination of the hunt.
- His bloodline explains why drakes became prey for Dragon Communion hunters.
- Florissax provides the connection to Placidusax’s servants and the older purpose of the hunt.
- Igon gives the conflict a mortal perspective: Bayle is not merely an ancient historical figure but the source of a personal trauma that Igon wants to confront.
- The Heart of Bayle turns that history into a gameplay choice, allowing the player to carry part of his power into a Dragon Communion build.
That is why Bayle works as the climax of the Jagged Peak thread. The boss fight, the summon, the drake hunts, the priestess’s mission, and the two reward incantations all point back to the same betrayal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bayle the Dread required to finish Shadow of the Erdtree?
No. Bayle is an optional boss at the top of Jagged Peak. He is the climax of the area’s Dragon Communion storyline and provides unique rewards, but he is not required for every main progression objective in the DLC.
Can you summon Igon for Bayle?
Yes, if you progress the relevant Jagged Peak quest and obtain Igon’s Furled Finger. His summon sign appears inside Bayle’s arena. On the first attempt in a playthrough, the encounter’s opening setup can prevent the sign from appearing immediately, so check the arena and account for that state-dependent behavior.
Does Bayle drop a Remembrance?
No. Bayle drops the Heart of Bayle. At the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion, the heart can be exchanged for Bayle’s Flame Lightning or Bayle’s Tyranny.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan you get both of Bayle’s incantations in one playthrough?
Not through the normal Remembrance duplication systems. The Heart of Bayle provides a mutually exclusive choice between the two incantations for that playthrough.
Where do you get the Talisman of the Dread?
The Talisman of the Dread is found at Elder’s Hovel in Gravesite Plain. It is not a reward from Bayle’s arena. It boosts magma-causing skills, sorceries, and incantations by 15%, including Bayle’s Tyranny.
The Bottom Line
Bayle the Dread is the optional culmination of Jagged Peak’s Dragon Communion story. Follow the quest far enough to summon Igon, prepare for a grounded opening followed by a winged flame-lightning phase, and remember that the reward is the one-choice Heart of Bayle—not a Remembrance. Select Bayle’s Flame Lightning or Bayle’s Tyranny at the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion according to your Arcane build and preferred attack style; if you choose Tyranny, the separately obtained Talisman of the Dread can increase its potency.
