Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what you see:
- Windows or several programs report the error: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- The problem began after antivirus activity: inspect Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- Only one older program reports it: repair that program after Windows passes its system-file checks.
- The message names
BootBCD, shows error0xc000000f, or Windows will not start: this may be a damaged BCD store, not a missing DLL. - The file exists but the error says the module cannot be found: a dependency, architecture mismatch, or damaged Windows registration may be involved.
- The file is outside a Windows system directory: treat it cautiously and verify the calling program and file signature.
What bcdprov.dll does
Microsoft documents the BCD provider as a WMI component for accessing Boot Configuration Data. It exposes BCD stores, objects, and elements through WMI classes in the RootWMI namespace. Modern Windows uses BCD in place of the old Boot.ini configuration model.

The file normally belongs in a Windows system directory such as %SystemRoot%System32. On 32-bit Windows, and for some 32-bit components on 64-bit Windows, a corresponding copy may be present under %SystemRoot%SysWOW64. The exact file version, size, and architecture vary by Windows build.

That location matters. A copy found in an application folder, a temporary directory, or a downloads folder is not automatically the genuine Windows component.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete servicing operation can leave Windows components missing or mismatched.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- In Windows 11, choose Windows Update. In Windows 10, choose Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not request a restart.
- Open the program or Windows feature that produced the error again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not jump to a DLL download sites site.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC can then use as a source for replacing damaged protected files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart the computer when it completes.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and retry the affected program.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error disappears, the Windows component was probably damaged or missing.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time. If repair still fails, inspect:

Avoid repeatedly running repair commands without recording what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can show a scan of issues that may be contributing to the repair problem, while its full version performs the repair; Windows Update and DISM/SFC remain the supported first steps.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Antivirus software can quarantine a system file after a detection, a false positive, or suspected tampering.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for a path containing
bcdprov.dll. - Expand the detection and note the file path, detection name, and action taken.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error. Restore it only when the file is in the expected Windows directory, has a valid Microsoft digital signature, and the detection is confirmed as incorrect. Microsoft’s supported repair path is usually safer: run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC to restore the component from Windows sources.
If Windows Security repeatedly quarantines the file, leave it quarantined until you investigate. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and consider Microsoft Defender Antivirus offline scan when malware may have modified protected Windows files.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If Windows passes DISM and SFC but only one application reports bcdprov.dll, the application may be damaged, using a stale manifest, or invoking the wrong architecture.
First identify the executable named in the error dialog. Then:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps in Windows 11. In Windows 10, select Apps and then Apps & features.
- Find the affected application.
- Open its menu and choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair. If that does not help, select Reset only after confirming the application’s data is backed up.
- If neither option exists, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the latest installer from the application developer’s official source and reinstall it.
- Retry the program.
Do not place a replacement DLL beside the executable. A program that asks for this Windows component may have a damaged installation, but copying a random file can introduce a version or architecture mismatch.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit process do not necessarily load the same Windows files. Windows may maintain system components in both System32 and SysWOW64, despite the confusing directory names.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check these points:
- Is the affected application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Is the Windows installation 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Does the error name an executable from
Program FilesorProgram Files (x86)? - Is the reported DLL in a Windows directory or inside the application folder?
- Did the problem begin after replacing, cleaning, or copying system files?
Do not copy a file from another computer or another Windows release to solve an architecture mismatch. DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or an in-place repair restores the version that belongs to the installed Windows build.
If the application also depends on a hardware driver, update that driver through the device manufacturer or Windows Update rather than using an unrelated runtime installer. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated drivers with a free scan, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use it only as an optional convenience, not as a substitute for repairing Windows.
Fix 6: Use a Windows 11 repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 installations, a repair reinstall can refresh Windows while preserving applications, personal files, and settings.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
- Restart and test the affected operation.
This option is not available on every edition or installation. If it is missing, use System Restore or official installation media instead.

Fix 7: Try System Restore
Use System Restore when the error began after a driver installation, cleanup utility, update, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore and let Windows restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It does not remove personal documents, photos, or other personal files, but review the affected-program list before continuing.
Fix 8: Perform an in-place repair from Windows installation media
If DISM and SFC cannot restore the component and Windows remains unstable, use official Windows installation media for the installed edition and language.
Start Windows normally, open the installation media, and run setup.exe. Follow the prompts carefully and choose the option to retain personal files and applications where Windows offers it. Do not boot from the media and select a clean installation unless you have backed up your data and deliberately intend to erase Windows.
An in-place repair replaces damaged Windows components without the destructive effect of formatting the system drive.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is not a universal missing-DLL repair command. Some builds may expose registration-related exports, but that does not prove that manually running:
regsvr32 bcdprov.dll
is required or supported for your installation.
The BCD provider is part of Windows’ WMI and component-registration model. Re-registering a file can produce another error, change nothing, or obscure the actual servicing problem. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.
Do not download bcdprov.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a modified file. Even when the copied file loads, it may not match the component store, WMI registration, or the calling program’s dependencies.
There is no identified standalone Microsoft redistributable package named bcdprov.dll. Safe sources are Windows Update, the Windows component store, official Windows installation media, System Restore, and Microsoft’s repair options.
Missing DLL or damaged BCD store
These problems are easy to confuse.
A bcdprov.dll loader error usually appears after Windows or an application attempts to load the provider. A damaged boot configuration usually appears during startup and may mention:
BootBCD0xc000000f- Boot configuration data
- An operating system that cannot be found
- A computer that cannot start Windows
Those messages concern the BCD store or boot files, not necessarily the presence of bcdprov.dll. Do not replace the DLL randomly when Windows cannot boot. Use Windows Recovery boot-repair guidance and preserve the original error details.
What to record if the error remains
Before asking for further help, collect:
- The exact error text
- The executable named in the dialog
- The full path shown for
bcdprov.dll - Your Windows edition and build
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The result of DISM and SFC
- Any related Event Viewer entry
- Whether the problem began after an update, cleanup tool, antivirus action, driver change, or software installation
That information distinguishes a missing Windows component from an application defect, a quarantine event, an architecture mismatch, or a separate BCD-store failure.
FAQ
Is bcdprov.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is the Microsoft Boot Configuration Data WMI Provider and is part of Windows.
Should I reinstall Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not solely because bcdprov.dll is named. This file is a Windows BCD/WMI component, not a Visual C++ runtime or DirectX library.
Can I copy bcdprov.dll into System32?
No. Use Windows servicing, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or official installation media. Copying a file from another source can create version, signature, and architecture problems.
Will reinstalling one program fix it?
Only if Windows is healthy and that program has a damaged installation or incorrect dependency reference. If multiple programs show the error, repair Windows first.

Is bcdprov.dll safe?
The genuine Microsoft file in the expected Windows directory should belong to Windows. A same-named file outside normal Windows locations needs path and digital-signature verification.
