When Windows says crashrpt1403_x64.dll is missing, the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the game or application that should have placed the file beside its executable.
| File clue | What it means |
|---|---|
crashrpt |
CrashRpt crash-reporting middleware used by Windows applications |
1403 |
Likely a CrashRpt version-style identifier, probably corresponding to 1.4.0.3 |
_x64 |
A 64-bit build |
.dll |
A runtime library loaded by the parent application |
| Expected location | Normally the application’s own installation folder |
The 1403 portion is not a Windows error code. Public file listings associate it with version 1.4.0.3, but that metadata is only an identification clue, not proof of the exact version, publisher, hash, or size of the copy on your computer.

Find the application that needs the DLL
Start with the program named in the error message. If the message appears while launching a game, that game is the first place to repair. If it appears during Windows startup, look for a recently installed game, utility, mod loader, or shortcut that runs automatically.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
To inspect the installation folder:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the path in Target.
- Click Open File Location if available.
- Look for the application’s main
.exefile and the surrounding DLLs.
The file normally belongs beside that executable, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. CrashRpt deployments commonly include a versioned CrashSender executable, crashrpt_lang.ini, and sometimes a matching dbghelp.dll. A missing companion file can prevent the DLL from loading even when crashrpt1403_x64.dll itself is present.

Fix 1: Verify or repair the game files
This is the best first repair because it restores the complete, matching application bundle rather than replacing one file in isolation.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish.
- Launch the game again from Steam.
If Steam reports that files were reacquired, test the game before making any other changes. If the error remains, restart Windows and run the verification again. Persistent failure usually means the launcher is repairing a different installation than the shortcut uses, or that antivirus software removes the restored file.
Epic Games or another launcher
The wording varies, but the process is similar:
- Open the launcher.
- Open Library.
- Find the affected game.
- Open its three-dot menu or management screen.
- Select Manage, Repair, Verify, or Scan and repair.
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Start the game from the launcher.
If the launcher has no repair option, uninstall and reinstall the parent application using its official store or installer. Do not download crashrpt1403_x64.dll separately.

Fix 2: Reinstall the parent application
A clean reinstall is appropriate when verification does not restore the file, an update was interrupted, or the installation folder contains only part of the CrashRpt bundle.
- Back up saves and configuration files if the application stores them outside cloud synchronization.
- Uninstall the affected program through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the program, click its three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the official launcher, developer, or store.
- Launch it once before restoring mods or custom files.
If the program was installed to a custom library, check that the shortcut points to the new installation. A stale shortcut can continue launching an old folder that still lacks the DLL.
Do not assume every program using CrashRpt comes from the same publisher. CrashRpt is reusable middleware, and different games and applications can ship their own builds.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove a DLL after an update or after scanning a modified game folder. Check the detection before restoring anything.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Expand recent detections.
- Inspect the affected path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if the application came from a trusted official source and you have confirmed the detection is a false positive.
Microsoft also provides an Allow on device action for some detections. Use it cautiously. Allowing a genuine threat can expose files and accounts to harm. If Defender repeatedly removes the file, reinstall the application from its official source and submit the suspected false positive to the antivirus vendor instead of permanently excluding the whole folder.
After restoring or reinstalling, run a scan on the installer and the application directory. The filename alone cannot establish the publisher of a particular copy.
Fix 4: Check the application architecture
The _x64 suffix means this file is intended for a 64-bit application. Windows being 64-bit does not automatically mean every program needs the x64 DLL.
To check the application:
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Start the application if it opens far enough to appear.
- Open the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform if your Windows version provides it.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also inspect the application documentation or installation structure. A 32-bit program needs the x86 CrashRpt build, while a 64-bit program needs the x64 build. Do not copy an x86 DLL into a 64-bit installation, or mix CrashRpt files from unrelated applications. Reinstalling the complete application is the correct way to obtain the matching architecture and companion files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 5: Distinguish a missing DLL from a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that crashrpt1403_x64.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found that file but failed to load one of its dependencies.
Inspect the application directory for:
crashrpt1403_x64.dll- The matching
CrashSenderexecutable crashrpt_lang.inidbghelp.dll- Any runtime DLL named directly in the error
If the message names msvcp140.dll, vcruntime140.dll, or another Microsoft runtime, repair the appropriate Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Choose the architecture required by the application. Installing Visual C++ Redistributable will not create crashrpt1403_x64.dll; it only addresses a different dependency.
For a stubborn dependency chain, use a current dependency-analysis utility from a trusted source and inspect the application’s complete file set. Avoid replacing individual system DLLs based only on a search result.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged
DISM and SFC are useful when multiple Windows components show errors, Windows Update is failing, or unrelated applications also report corruption. They are not the primary repair for one missing application-local CrashRpt file.

- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use Microsoft’s documented source-image method rather than downloading replacement DLLs from an unknown site.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real problem is an incomplete game installation. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what it identifies, while its repair actions require the full version; reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix for this file.

A graphics driver rarely supplies crashrpt1403_x64.dll, so driver work is not a first-line fix for this specific error. Consider it when the application also crashes with display-driver errors, DirectX failures, black screens, or device warnings.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a clean vendor update, identify the graphics adapter in Device Manager and obtain the driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official support page. Do not remove a working driver merely because this DLL is missing.
Recommended Free Tools
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show which versions it finds, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it does not replace repairing the parent application that should contain crashrpt1403_x64.dll.
What not to do
Do not copy the file into System32
Global copying is usually wrong. The application may require a specific CrashRpt build beside its executable, and placing another version in a Windows directory can create loading conflicts.
Do not use regsvr32 on this DLL
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. CrashRpt is normally an application runtime library, not a COM server. Registering it is not a repair step.
If you run regsvr32 crashrpt1403_x64.dll and Windows reports that the entry point is missing, that confirms registration is the wrong approach. Remove the copied file if you placed it in a system folder, then repair the parent application.

Unverified DLL sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file that does not include the required dependencies. The safe source is the affected program’s official installer, launcher, or file-repair system.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Check these possibilities in order:
- Wrong folder: confirm the shortcut launches the newly repaired executable.
- Antivirus removal: review Protection History immediately after launching.
- Launcher cache: clear only the cache documented by the launcher, then verify again.
- Permissions: right-click the launcher and try Run as administrator once for testing.
- Mods or unofficial files: temporarily remove mods and test the unmodified installation.
- Corrupted profile: test from another Windows administrator account or a new profile.
- Disk problems: check the drive for errors if files disappear or installations become corrupted.
- Application logs: inspect the game or program’s logs for a different missing dependency.
- Stale startup entry: if the error appears during boot, inspect Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager > Startup apps.
If a crash report merely names CrashRpt1403_x64.dll, that does not prove CrashRpt caused the original crash. It may only be the component collecting and sending information about a failure elsewhere.
FAQ
Is crashrpt1403_x64.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with CrashRpt, third-party crash-reporting middleware used by Windows applications. Windows does not normally install it globally.
What does 1403 mean?
It likely reflects a CrashRpt version-style identifier, commonly interpreted as 1.4.0.3. Treat that as a clue rather than authoritative proof of the exact binary version.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only when the error names a Visual C++ dependency such as msvcp140.dll or vcruntime140.dll. It will not supply crashrpt1403_x64.dll.
Should I install both x86 and x64 runtimes?
That can be appropriate when you use both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. It does not mean you should mix x86 and x64 CrashRpt DLLs in one installation.
Can I fix the error with System File Checker?
Usually not by itself. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this DLL normally belongs beside an application executable. Repair the application first and use DISM and SFC only when broader Windows corruption is evident.
What is the definitive fix?
Verify or repair the affected program, then reinstall it from its official source if necessary. That restores the correct CrashRpt architecture, companion files, and dependencies as one matching bundle.
