Nintendo acknowledged the reports and released version 20.0.1 on May 2, 2025, with instructions to install it through Maintenance Mode if a normal update was not possible.
This is now a retrospective issue: Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, and later Switch firmware versions have followed. The incident matters because version 20.0.0 was a major Switch 2-preparation update, not merely a routine stability patch.

What happened with Switch update 20.0.0?
Version 20.0.0 was released for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED Model on April 29, 2025. It introduced infrastructure and features designed to help existing Switch owners move to Nintendo Switch 2, including System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2, virtual game cards, GameShare support, online-license settings, and additional data-management options.

After installing the update, some owners encountered Error Code 2206-1015, particularly when restarting the console. Nintendo’s official update history describes the failure more narrowly than some contemporaneous reports: the error could appear when restarting after updating to version 20.0.0. Reports described some systems as crashing or becoming unusable, but there is no verified evidence showing that every console was affected, how widespread the problem was, or that the update permanently “bricked” systems.

How Nintendo responded
Nintendo said on May 2, 2025, that it had received customer inquiries about Error Code 2206-1015 and was investigating. The same day, it released Nintendo Switch system version 20.0.1.
Nintendo’s changelog says version 20.0.1 fixed the issue in which Error Code 2206-1015 sometimes appeared when restarting after updating to version 20.0.0. For consoles that could not complete a normal update, Nintendo directed users to update through Maintenance Mode.
The response therefore was not simply a recommendation to retry the update or reset the console. Nintendo shipped a corrective firmware update and provided a recovery route for systems that could not reach the ordinary update screen.
How to update a working Switch
If the console starts normally, use the standard update path:
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Scroll down and select System.
- Select System Update.
- Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available.
Nintendo’s system update information page contains the normal procedure and later firmware history. Current owners should follow the latest version listed by Nintendo rather than treating 20.0.1 as the current Switch firmware.
How to use Maintenance Mode for Error Code 2206-1015
Use Maintenance Mode when the regular System Settings update path is unavailable. Nintendo says a Parental Control PIN may be required.

- Turn the Switch completely off. If it does not respond, hold the POWER button for 12 seconds to force it to shut down.
- Press and hold Volume Up (+) and Volume Down (-) at the same time.
- While continuing to hold both volume buttons, press the POWER button.
- Keep holding the volume buttons until the Maintenance Mode menu appears.
- Select Update System.
- Complete the on-screen instructions.
Do not choose a factory reset merely because the error appears. If Maintenance Mode cannot install the update, or the console remains unusable afterward, record the error code and system version and use Nintendo’s official service channel.
Full button instructions are available in Nintendo’s Maintenance Mode support guide.
Why version 20.0.0 mattered before Switch 2
The update was significant because it prepared the original Switch for several Switch 2-related account and software features.
System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2
Version 20.0.0 added support for transferring users, saves, settings, and other data to a Switch 2. Nintendo supports two broad approaches:
- Local communication transfer: The original Switch and Switch 2 are used together when both consoles are available.
- Server transfer: Data is uploaded before the original console is sold, traded in, or given away, then downloaded to the Switch 2 later.
Virtual game cards
Digital Switch games, downloadable content, and some free software can be managed through a virtual game-card menu. Cards can be loaded or ejected between up to two Switch systems, and eligible cards can be lent to members of the same Nintendo Account family group.
GameShare and online licenses
GameShare allows compatible software to be shared from a Switch 2 to nearby systems, with the Switch 2 initiating the session. It is not a feature for sharing between two original Nintendo Switch systems. Version 20.0.0 also added online-license settings, multiple-save-data selection for transfers, new HOME Menu icons, and user-verification options.
Nintendo’s complete version 20.0.0 changelog lists the feature changes.

Important warnings before transferring to Switch 2
Local transfer can remove data from the old console
A local transfer is generally the sensible option when you are keeping the original Switch until the Switch 2 is in your hands. However, it is not a risk-free duplicate operation. Nintendo warns that some save data can be deleted from the source console after transfer, including saves for users not linked to a Nintendo Account and games that do not support Save Data Cloud Backup.

The transfer includes data for all users on the console, so notify other people who use a shared Switch before starting. Animal Crossing: New Horizons also has special save-transfer requirements and should not be treated like an ordinary title.
Server transfer initializes the original Switch
Server transfer is intended for owners who will no longer have access to the original console before receiving the Switch 2. The source Switch is initialized after its data is uploaded, so do not use this option simply as a precaution if the old console is still available.
The uploaded data is stored for up to one year, subject to the download deadline shown by Nintendo. You must obtain the Switch 2 before that deadline. A Nintendo Account is required.
Eligible Nintendo Switch 2 transfer details explain the deletion behavior, exceptions, deadlines, and special cases.

Original Nintendo Switch microSD cards are not compatible with Switch 2 for game data. Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards. This is separate from the 20.0.0 firmware problem: buying a new storage card will not fix Error Code 2206-1015 on an original Switch.
What owners should do now
- If the Switch works: Update through System Settings → System → System Update, using Nintendo’s current supported firmware rather than seeking out the historical 20.0.1 package.
- If it shows 2206-1015: Try Nintendo’s Maintenance Mode update procedure before considering service or a reset.
- If you still have the original Switch: Keep it available and use local transfer after the Switch 2 arrives, while checking Nintendo’s current transfer instructions.
- If you sold or traded in the original Switch: Server transfer may be appropriate, but confirm the displayed download deadline and understand that the old console is initialized.
- If the console remains unusable: Contact Nintendo service rather than assuming the hardware is permanently damaged.
Where the story stands
Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, so the original “Switch 2 is almost here” framing is no longer current. The 20.0.1 release should be understood as Nintendo’s historical fix for a specific restart-related problem introduced by version 20.0.0, not as a newly released update.
Nintendo’s later Switch update history lists subsequent firmware versions. The available evidence confirms the error and Nintendo’s response, but it does not establish a failure rate, a particular hardware model as the main cause, or that the same incident remains a general problem in 2026.
