Yes—replacing a desktop GTX 1650 is worthwhile if modern games are struggling, but only if you make a substantial jump. The Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB is the best all-round upgrade for most 1080p and entry-level 1440p gamers. Choose the GeForce RTX 5060 instead if you prioritise DLSS, ray tracing, Nvidia’s encoder, CUDA, or lower power consumption. Older cards such as the RX 7600 and RTX 4060 are worth considering only when heavily discounted.
The short answer
A GTX 1650 remains usable for esports, older games and 1080p gaming at low or medium settings. It is increasingly unsuitable for new AAA games, high texture settings, ray tracing, 1440p and high-refresh gaming.

Do not replace it with a card that is only slightly faster. Target a GPU that delivers a clearly visible improvement and gives you more room for newer games:

Best GTX 1650 upgrades by budget
| Budget | What to buy | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Under $250 | Discounted RX 7600 or RTX 4060; tested used RX 6700 XT/6750 XT | 1080p gamers who want the largest improvement for the least money |
| $300–$350 | RTX 5060 or RX 9060 XT 8GB | 1080p gaming, especially high-refresh play |
| $400–$450 | RX 9060 XT 16GB | 1080p high settings and entry-level 1440p |
| $500 or more | Consider a faster GPU only after checking the rest of the PC | Systems with a suitable CPU, RAM, PSU and case |
These are US price bands rather than universal global prices. August 2026 price reporting put many RTX 5060 cards around $300–$370, while RX 9060 XT 16GB models were commonly reported below or around $450, with some listings closer to $470–$500. Check the live price, warranty and return policy before buying.
Why the RX 9060 XT 16GB is the default recommendation
The RX 9060 XT 16GB is the most balanced upgrade for a GTX 1650 owner who wants to keep the card for several years. It combines a modern performance level with twice the GTX 1650’s typical video-memory capacity, making it better suited to high textures, mods and newer games.
AMD lists the card with 16GB of GDDR6 memory, 160W board power and a recommended 450W power supply. That recommendation does not guarantee compatibility with every old or generic 450W unit, however. Check the exact partner card, power connectors and PSU quality. Official specifications are available from AMD.
It is particularly attractive at roughly $400–$450 in the United States. It is not automatically the right choice for a small proprietary prebuilt, a very old CPU or someone who specifically needs Nvidia’s software ecosystem.
When the RTX 5060 is the better choice
The RTX 5060 is the better alternative when features matter as much as conventional rendering speed. Choose it if you care about:
- DLSS upscaling and Nvidia’s frame-generation features.
- Ray-tracing performance.
- CUDA-compatible applications.
- NVENC video encoding and streaming workflows.
- Generally efficient power consumption.
Its main drawback is 8GB of VRAM. That is workable for 1080p with sensible settings, but it can require lower textures, reduced ray tracing or upscaling in demanding games. Nvidia’s specifications can be checked on its official comparison page.

- Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030
- Video Memory: 4GB DDR4
- Boost Clock: 1430 MHz
- Memory Interface: 64-bit
- Output: DisplayPort x 1 (v1.4a) / HDMI 2.0b x 1
The RTX 5060 and RX 9060 XT 8GB compete in the mainstream 1080p segment. The choice depends on the game and price: AMD can be compelling for conventional rasterised performance, while Nvidia is usually the safer feature choice for ray tracing, upscaling and encoding.
RX 9060 XT 8GB: worthwhile, but only at the right price
The 8GB RX 9060 XT is a major step up from the GTX 1650 and can be a sensible 1080p purchase around $300–$350. It becomes less attractive when the 16GB version costs only modestly more.
Buy the 8GB model if the 16GB card is unavailable or substantially more expensive. Avoid it if you expect to play heavily modded games, use maximum textures, target 1440p for years or keep the card through several generations of new releases.
Are the RTX 4060 and RX 7600 still worth buying?
Both remain meaningful upgrades from a GTX 1650, but they are previous-generation 8GB cards. Their value depends almost entirely on the discount.
- RTX 4060: sensible when available around $220–$250 or less and you want Nvidia’s efficiency, DLSS, ray tracing or encoding.
- RX 7600: sensible at a similarly low price when you mainly want rasterised 1080p performance.
Do not pay near RTX 5060 or RX 9060 XT pricing for either card. Current comparisons place the RTX 4060 and RX 7600 close together in mainstream performance, while newer cards generally offer better value or features. See Tom’s Hardware’s GPU hierarchy and TechRadar’s RTX 4060 coverage for comparative context.

How much faster will the upgrade feel?
There is no reliable single “times faster” figure. The result changes with the game engine, resolution, preset, CPU, upscaling, ray tracing and the specific GTX 1650 model.

| Upgrade | Practical result |
|---|---|
| RX 7600 or RTX 4060 | A clearly noticeable improvement, especially at 1080p, but limited by 8GB VRAM and older positioning. |
| RTX 5060 or RX 9060 XT | A much more convincing upgrade for high-refresh 1080p and demanding modern games. |
| RX 9060 XT 16GB | The strongest balance of a large performance increase, memory capacity and useful lifespan among these recommendations. |
Use the comparison suite linked above rather than relying on one game or one headline percentage. A card can be faster in native rasterisation but lose its advantage in ray-traced workloads, while upscaling and frame generation can change reported frame rates again.
1080p, 1440p and ray tracing recommendations
1080p at 60Hz
You do not need an expensive GPU for a 60Hz display. An RTX 5060, RX 9060 XT 8GB, discounted RX 7600 or good used card can be sufficient. Keep the GTX 1650 if your current games already meet your desired frame rate.
1080p at 144Hz
Prefer the RTX 5060 or RX 9060 XT. At high frame rates, the CPU becomes increasingly important, particularly in competitive games. A faster GPU will not solve a processor bottleneck.
1440p
The RX 9060 XT 16GB is the most attractive mainstream choice from these options. Eight-gigabyte cards can still work, but you may need to lower textures, ray tracing or other settings when memory pressure appears.
Ray tracing
Nvidia is the safer choice for readers who specifically play ray-traced games. AMD can remain the better value for conventional rasterised games, so make the decision based on the titles you actually play rather than a universal brand ranking.
8GB versus 16GB of VRAM
Eight gigabytes is not automatically inadequate, and 16GB does not automatically make a card faster. VRAM capacity mainly determines how much room the card has for textures, frame buffers, mods and future game assets.

- High-resolution textures, ray tracing and newer AAA games can push 8GB cards into compromises.
- At 1440p, 16GB provides more breathing room.
- A faster 8GB card can still be preferable to a slower 16GB card at the same price.
The RX 9060 XT 16GB is attractive because it combines extra memory with a modern level of performance; it is not merely a weak GPU with a large memory number.
Native rendering, upscaling and frame generation
Keep these performance claims separate:
- Native rendering: the GPU renders the game at the output resolution without reconstruction.
- Upscaling: the game renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image, improving performance with some image-quality trade-offs.
- Frame generation: software creates additional interpolated frames. This can improve apparent smoothness, but it does not remove input latency or fix a CPU bottleneck.
- Ray tracing: a separate, demanding lighting workload that can change the ranking between GPUs.
Do not interpret a frame-generation result as equivalent to doubling native GPU capability. DLSS and Nvidia’s broader feature ecosystem are important reasons to choose the RTX 5060, while the RX 9060 XT remains compelling for raw performance and value.

Power supply
The GTX 1650 is unusually easy to power. Many models draw around 75W, and some need no auxiliary PCIe connector. Modern replacements may require a dedicated 6+2-pin cable or a newer connector and can draw considerably more power.
Check:
- PSU wattage, brand and age.
- Available PCIe power connectors.
- The exact connector required by the graphics-card model.
- Whether a nominal 450W or 500W unit is a quality PSU rather than a generic prebuilt unit.
AMD’s 450W recommendation for the RX 9060 XT is a starting point, not a blanket approval for every old 450W PSU.
Case clearance
Measure maximum GPU length, height and thickness. Check for front radiators, drive cages and adjacent expansion slots. A card can fit the motherboard yet fail to fit the case or block airflow.

As a troubleshooting indicator—not an absolute rule—GPU utilisation near 95–100% while gaming usually suggests the GPU is the limiting component. Lower GPU utilisation while one or more CPU cores are saturated can indicate a processor limit. Stutter alongside full system RAM or VRAM suggests a memory-capacity problem.
Motherboard and prebuilt restrictions
Modern desktop GPUs generally work in older PCIe slots, though bandwidth can be lower and some narrow or entry-level configurations lose more performance. Prebuilt systems can also have proprietary power supplies, BIOS restrictions or unusual case layouts. Check the exact PC model, not just the processor name.
Desktop versus laptop GTX 1650
This advice assumes a desktop GTX 1650. A laptop GTX 1650 normally cannot be replaced like a desktop graphics card. Practical alternatives are improving RAM, storage, cooling and settings, using an external GPU enclosure if the laptop supports a suitable high-speed port, or replacing the laptop.

Should you buy a used graphics card?
A used RX 6700 XT or RX 6750 XT can offer excellent rasterised performance and 12GB of VRAM for less than a new card. Local prices vary too sharply to treat one figure as universal.
Buy only when you can verify:
- Artifact-free operation in a game or benchmark.
- Temperatures and fan behaviour.
- Warranty or a meaningful return period.
- Physical condition and undamaged connectors.
- Compatibility with your PSU and case.
- Expected coil whine and noise.
Mining history alone does not prove a card is bad, but an untestable card with no return protection is a poor match for a budget upgrade.
Why you might keep the GTX 1650
Keep it if you play esports or older games, use a 1080p/60Hz monitor and already achieve an acceptable frame rate. Keeping it can also be sensible if your system has a weak proprietary PSU, only 8GB of RAM, a very old CPU or a case that cannot accept a modern card.
If the rest of the computer is the main limitation, save for a complete platform upgrade rather than buying a $400 GPU that cannot be used properly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesQuick Recap
If the new card shows no improvement
- Install the current driver from the GPU manufacturer. If installation errors persist, use a reputable display-driver cleanup process before reinstalling.
- Make sure the monitor cable is connected to the graphics card rather than the motherboard.
- Confirm that the card is fully seated.
- Connect every required auxiliary power cable.
- Check that the game is using the discrete GPU.
- Monitor GPU and CPU utilisation, VRAM and system RAM use, temperatures and frame-time consistency.
- Enable Resizable BAR or Smart Access Memory where supported, treating it as an optimisation rather than a requirement.
- If the PC will not boot, reinstall the old card. Update the motherboard BIOS only when the manufacturer documents a compatibility issue.
