Best Affordable Alternatives to Buying a New Gaming Console

By VGSources Team 11 min read

You do not need to buy a new flagship console to play games. For the lowest upfront cost, a used or certified-refurbished PlayStation 4 or Xbox One is usually the practical winner. An Xbox Series S is the simplest current living-room substitute. Cloud gaming can remove the hardware purchase if you already own a compatible screen or computer and have dependable internet. A PC handheld favors portable access to PC games, while a retro handheld is a good value only when classic games are your goal.

The right choice depends on more than the sticker price. Compare the complete cost over the period you expect to play, including games, online fees, subscriptions, storage, controllers, accessories, internet requirements, warranty coverage and return protection.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Quick answer: which alternative fits you?

  • Lowest upfront cost for local play: a reputable used or certified-refurbished PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
  • Closest simple replacement for a new living-room console: Xbox Series S, provided you are comfortable with digital-only games and limited internal storage.
  • No new gaming hardware: cloud gaming on a phone, tablet, laptop, browser device or compatible TV you already own.
  • Portable access to a PC library: an affordable PC gaming handheld.
  • Classic games and travel: a retro handheld or mini-console under $150.

There is no universal cheapest option. A low hardware price can be offset by expensive games, a required subscription, extra storage, a replacement controller or a short warranty. Decide first whether you need current releases, local offline play, portability or only older games.

How the alternatives compare

Option Upfront hardware cost indicated by the cited coverage What you can play Internet and ownership Best fit Main compromise
Used or certified-refurbished PS4/Xbox One Used systems start in the low $100s in one 2026 marketplace guide; used prices were described as commonly 30%–60% below new retail. This is directional, not a guaranteed current price. Large last-generation disc and digital libraries, subject to each platform’s support and game prices. Local play works offline for compatible games; online features depend on the platform and title. You own purchased games, but access to online services can change. Lowest-cost local gaming. Older performance, aging storage and hardware-condition risk.
Xbox Series S Current price, storage configuration and bundles vary and were not stated in the cited comparison; verify them before buying. Current Xbox digital library and supported backward-compatible titles. Offline play is possible for eligible installed games; digital purchasing and account access are required for the digital library. Simple TV gaming without a flagship console. Digital-only purchasing, limited internal storage and continuing game costs.
Cloud gaming Uses hardware you already own. A 2024 United States International Trade Commission report covering earlier service data found reviewed cloud software services ranging from $4.99 to $14.99 per month; treat that as historical context, not a current price list. Only supported titles in the selected service and region. Xbox’s current product page advertises more than 50 playable games, with plan and availability conditions. Continuous broadband is required for streaming. A subscription generally provides access rather than permanent ownership. Players with a compatible screen and reliable, low-latency internet. Latency, outages, regional restrictions, catalog changes and recurring fees.
PC gaming handheld TechRadar’s 2026 buying coverage places models such as Steam Deck OLED and Windows handhelds in different price and usability tiers; exact prices vary by model, storage and condition. Portable PC storefronts, indie games and many older PC titles, with compatibility varying by device. Downloaded games can work offline when the game and launcher permit it. You generally own or license games through separate PC stores. Portability and an existing PC library. Battery life, setup, compatibility and accessories can raise the total cost.
Retro handheld or mini-console A 2026 buying guide covers capable devices under $150. Classic systems such as NES, SNES, Genesis and PlayStation 1, depending on the device and legally obtained games. Usually local and offline. Online ecosystems and current releases are not the purpose. Classic games, travel and short sessions. Not a replacement for current AAA releases or modern first-party exclusives.

Use a total-cost time horizon, not a sticker-price contest

A one-time hardware purchase and a monthly service cannot be compared fairly without choosing a period. Use 12, 24 or 36 months, then add every cost you are likely to incur:

#1 Best Overall

  • BEST VALUE IN GAMING — Experience next-gen speed and performance in the smallest XBOX ever. The XBOX Series S delivers powerful all-digital gameplay in a sleek, compact design.
  • UP TO 120 FPS GAMEPLAY — Enjoy smooth, responsive gaming with frame rates up to 120 FPS, powered by XBOX Velocity Architecture, a custom NVMe SSD, and DirectX Raytracing for a heightened level of realism.

  • QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.
  • Hardware and shipping.
  • Games you expect to buy, rather than assuming a subscription catalog will always contain them.
  • Online multiplayer fees or cloud-gaming subscriptions.
  • Additional storage, memory cards, a dock, headset and replacement controller.
  • Electricity and a suitable display if you do not already own one.
  • Warranty, return protection and the expected cost of a failure.

For a used console, a lower purchase price may be worthwhile if the seller offers a meaningful return window and the controller, disc drive and ports pass inspection. For cloud gaming, the hardware line can be zero only because an existing phone, computer, browser device or TV is doing the work. If you must buy a new screen, controller or network equipment, include those items in the same calculation.

Used or certified-refurbished consoles: the cheapest local route

A used PlayStation 4 or Xbox One remains the most direct way to obtain local gaming for little money. Swappa’s 2026 marketplace guide says used systems start in the low $100s and are commonly 30% to 60% below new retail. Those figures describe marketplace direction, not a promise about a particular listing, region or day.

Used, retailer-refurbished and manufacturer-refurbished are different

Condition label What it may mean What to verify
Used or verified-used A previously owned device checked to a seller’s standard. Exact testing performed, cosmetic grade, controller condition, return window and remaining warranty.
Retailer-refurbished A returned or used device cleaned and tested by a retailer or its partner. Who performed the work, which parts were replaced, warranty length and whether accessories are original.
Manufacturer-refurbished A device restored under the manufacturer’s process, where such a program is available. Manufacturer warranty, included accessories, packaging and the terms for repair or replacement.

Swappa’s 2026 guide says the distinction can represent approximately $50 to $150 or more, depending on model and condition. Do not treat that range as a universal saving: protection and testing vary by seller.

Pre-purchase inspection checklist

  1. Confirm the exact model, storage capacity and whether it has a disc drive.
  2. Read the warranty and return policy before paying. A short return period changes the risk calculation.
  3. Ask whether the included controller is original, fully functional and free of stick drift or damaged buttons.
  4. Confirm that the listing includes the correct power cable and an HDMI cable, or price replacements separately.
  5. Check that the console is not account-locked, activation-locked or still tied to a seller’s account.
  6. Verify that the disc drive reads a game and ejects normally if you plan to use discs.
  7. Inspect HDMI, USB, Ethernet and power ports for looseness or damage.
  8. Check the platform’s current online-service support and the prices of the games you actually want.
  9. Prefer a seller with a clear condition description, transaction history and accessible support.

When this choice stops being a bargain

A very cheap unit with no return protection, a failing controller and a nearly full drive can cost more than a better-tested listing after repairs and accessories. Older hardware also cannot deliver the performance, loading times or current-release support of newer systems. Choose it for the library and local-play price, not because it is equivalent to a current-generation flagship.

Xbox Series S: the straightforward current living-room substitute

Among the lower-cost current options discussed here, the Xbox Series S is the simplest living-room replacement for someone who wants a conventional console connected to a television. The cited 2026 comparison identifies it as the clearest lower-cost substitute for a flagship console.

Rank #2
X Box Series S All-Digital Console
  • What's in the box: Xbox Series S 512GB console, 1 Xbox Wireless Controller, High Speed HDMI cable.
  • CPU: 8X Cores @ 3.6 GHz (3.4 GHz w/SMT) Custom Zen 2 CPU; GPU: 4 TFLOPS, 20 CUs @1.565 GHz Custom RDNA 2 GPU; SOC Die Size: 197.05 mm2.
  • Memory: 10GB GDDR6 128 bit-wide bus; Memory Bandwidth: 8GB @ 224 GB/s, 2GB @ 56 GB/s.; Internal Storage: 512GB Custom NVME SSD
  • Gaming Resolution: 1440p; Performance Target: Up to 120 FP.
  • HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.

Why it works

  • It is designed for TV-based console play rather than computer-style setup.
  • It provides access to a current Xbox platform and supported backward-compatible games.
  • Its smaller format can reduce the space and accessory burden of a larger system.

Costs and limitations to check before purchase

  • Digital-only: you cannot use physical game discs, so compare digital prices and account policies.
  • Storage: the internal drive is limited compared with larger systems. Budget for an approved expansion option or regular uninstalling if you play large games.
  • Recurring access: a subscription catalog is access while the plan and game rights remain active, not permanent ownership of every title.
  • Variable deal terms: verify the current price, storage configuration, bundle, warranty and subscription terms in your region; the cited material did not establish a universal current price.

Pick the Series S when you want the least-fussy modern console experience and are comfortable buying digitally. Pick a used last-generation system when the priority is the lowest possible entry price or physical discs.

Cloud gaming when you already own a screen

Cloud gaming renders a game on a remote server and streams the video to your device while sending your controls back over the internet. That can eliminate a new console purchase if you already have a compatible phone, tablet, laptop, browser device or television. Xbox’s current product page describes cloud play across console, PC and additional devices and advertises more than 50 playable games, subject to plan and availability conditions.

What you need

  • A supported device and controller method for the service you choose.
  • A stable broadband connection with enough capacity for the household’s other use.
  • Low enough latency for the games you play; download speed alone does not predict responsiveness.
  • An account and the required plan in your country or region.
  • A willingness to accept catalog rotation and service outages.

Where the savings are real

The main saving is deferring hardware. If a laptop or TV you already own can run the app or browser session, you may need only a controller and the recurring plan. The USITC’s 2024 report, which covered earlier service data, found reviewed cloud software services priced from $4.99 to $14.99 per month. Those figures are historical context and should not be used as a current quote.

Where cloud gaming is not equivalent to local hardware

An independent 2026 comparison from Tom’s Guide warns that cloud gaming does not fully replace local hardware when you require zero latency, maximum settings, offline play or permanent ownership. A crowded Wi-Fi network, a distant data center, an outage or a title leaving the catalog can interrupt play even when your device itself is working. Competitive action games and travel without dependable internet are especially poor fits.

Cloud-gaming decision steps

  1. List the device you will actually use and confirm that the service supports it in your region.
  2. Check whether your favorite games are included, separately purchasable or unavailable.
  3. Test the service during the hours you normally play, preferably over the same Wi-Fi or wired connection.
  4. Measure the total 12- or 24-month subscription cost and add a controller if you do not own one.
  5. Keep a local option for games you must play offline or cannot risk losing from a rotating catalog.

Affordable PC gaming handhelds: portability first

A PC handheld makes sense when the reason to avoid a console is portability or access to a PC library. TechRadar’s 2026 buying coverage places devices such as the Steam Deck OLED and Windows handhelds in distinct price and usability tiers; used hardware can reduce the entry price.

Microsoft (Refurbished) Xbox Series S Console - 512GB (Renewed)
  • Access your favorite entertainment through apps like YouTube, Netflix, and more
  • Enjoy over 100 games right out of the box with a 1 month Xbox Game Pass trial
  • Watch 4K Blu-ray movies and stream 4K video on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Microsoft Movies & TV, and more
  • Play with friends and family near and farsitting together on the sofa or around the world on Xbox Live, the fastest, most reliable gaming network
  • Xbox One games and accessories work together

What you gain

  • Portable play without a television.
  • Access to PC storefronts, indie games and many older titles.
  • Control over graphics settings, storage and (on some models) operating-system choices.

What makes a handheld difficult to price

  • Battery life changes substantially with screen brightness, frame rate and game demand.
  • Compatibility is game-specific. Anti-cheat systems, launchers and controller layouts can require troubleshooting.
  • Windows models may offer broad software support but more desktop friction; console-style interfaces can be simpler but less flexible.
  • A dock, microSD card, larger SSD, case and replacement controls can erase an apparent hardware saving.
  • Performance settings and heat management are part of normal use, not optional fine-tuning.

Buy a handheld when you value a portable PC library enough to accept setup and battery trade-offs. It is not automatically cheaper than a console once games, accessories, storage and the value of your time are included.

Retro handhelds and mini-consoles

Retro devices are an honest low-cost alternative when your target is classic gaming. A 2026 buying guide covers models under $150 aimed at systems including NES, SNES, Genesis and PlayStation 1.

Why they are good value

  • Low hardware cost and small size.
  • Fast start-up for short sessions and travel.
  • Local, offline play with modest power requirements.

Why they are not a new-console substitute

Retro hardware generally does not provide current AAA releases, modern first-party exclusives or the same online ecosystem as a current console. Preloaded-ROM claims also require care: use game files you obtained legally and check the laws that apply where you live. A retro handheld is best treated as a separate classic-gaming device, not a cheap way to play new releases.

Choose by your highest priority

Your priority Start with Reason to choose it Reason to reject it
Spend as little as possible today Used or certified-refurbished PS4/Xbox One Directional marketplace evidence puts entry prices in the low $100s. You need current releases, strong warranty protection or new hardware reliability.
Use a TV with minimal setup Xbox Series S It is the clearest lower-cost current living-room option in the cited comparison. You rely on discs, need substantial internal storage or dislike digital-only purchasing.
Avoid buying a console Cloud gaming Your existing device can become the screen and client. Your internet is unstable, latency-sensitive or unavailable when traveling.
Play away from home PC gaming handheld Portable access to PC libraries and indie games. You want plug-and-play simplicity, long battery life or guaranteed compatibility.
Play classics Retro handheld Devices under $150 target older systems and quick offline sessions. You want modern AAA games, current exclusives or a contemporary online community.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Comparing hardware with a subscription for only one month

Set a time horizon and include games, online fees, controllers, storage, accessories and likely replacement costs. A subscription can look inexpensive monthly while becoming significant over several years; a used console can look cheap until a failed drive or controller removes the saving.

Assuming “refurbished” guarantees the same protection everywhere

Read who tested the unit, what was replaced, the warranty duration and the return process. The label alone does not establish manufacturer testing or a particular cosmetic grade.

Xbox Series S 512GB SSD All-Digital Gaming Console (disc Free) with 1 Wireless Controller - 10GB GDDR6 Memory, 8X Cores Custom Zen 2 CPU HDMI_Cable
  • What's in the box: Xbox Series S 512GB console, 1 Wireless Controller, High Speed HDMI cable.
  • CPU: 8X Cores @ 3.6 GHz (3.4 GHz w/SMT) Custom Zen 2 CPU; GPU: 4 TFLOPS, 20 CUs @1.565 GHz Custom RDNA 2 GPU; SOC Die Size: 197.05 mm2.
  • Memory: 10GB GDDR6 128 bit-wide bus; Memory Bandwidth: 8GB @ 224 GB/s, 2GB @ 56 GB/s.; Internal Storage: 512GB Custom NVME SSD
  • Gaming Resolution: 1440p; Performance Target: Up to 120 FPS; HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.

Ignoring the library you will actually play

Make a short list of five to ten target games, then check platform support, digital or disc availability, current prices and whether a cloud catalog includes them. A cheaper device with none of your games is not an affordable solution.

Forgetting storage and controller costs

Large modern installations can fill a small drive quickly. Handhelds may need a larger card or SSD, and a used console may need a replacement controller. Add these before deciding.

Treating cloud gaming as offline gaming

Streaming depends on a working service, a supported region and a responsive connection. Keep locally installed or physical games if you need dependable play during outages or travel.

Bottom line

For most budget-conscious players, buy a well-protected used or certified-refurbished last-generation console when local gaming and minimum upfront cost matter most. Choose Xbox Series S for the simplest current TV experience, cloud gaming when you already own suitable hardware and reliable internet, a PC handheld for portable PC libraries, and a retro handheld only for classic games. The cheapest decision is the one whose library, connection, storage, accessories and protection match how you will actually play.
