Best AION 2 Graphics Settings for Higher FPS in Open-World Areas

By VGSources Team 12 min read

For the best starting point in AION 2, use your monitor’s native resolution with DLSS Quality; choose FSR Quality instead if the client exposes FSR in its Upscaler menu. Turn NVIDIA Reflex on, leave V-Sync off, keep frame generation disabled until the game holds a 60 FPS or higher base rate, and reduce shadows and effects before lowering textures. If crowded cities, events, or large open-world groups still cause drops, switch from Quality to Balanced and reduce crowd, mass-combat, foliage, and other effect-heavy options.

This approach preserves distant-target clarity better than immediately using Performance mode, especially at 1080p, while addressing the settings that most often limit frame rate in a world built for heavy regional streaming and large player gatherings.

Recommended AION 2 settings at a glance

Use the profile that matches what you are doing rather than one preset for every activity. The same upscaler and frame-generation choice can feel fine while questing and become a poor fit in a city, dungeon, world boss encounter, or competitive fight.

Use case Upscaling and resolution Latency and frame generation Scene-specific changes
Balanced open-world PvE Native monitor resolution with DLSS Quality; use FSR Quality when it is the available client option Reflex on, V-Sync off, frame generation initially off Reduce shadows and effects one step; keep textures high when available VRAM permits
Crowded cities and large events Move to DLSS Balanced when Quality still dips Reflex on, V-Sync off; keep frame generation off when the CPU is limiting performance Lower crowd and effects settings; reduce other mass-combat options that affect many characters at once
Competitive PvP or boss mechanics DLSS Quality or Balanced, selected according to the target frame rate Reflex on, V-Sync off, frame generation off Favor clear motion and predictable input over extra displayed frames
Cinematic travel on a strong RTX 40/50 card DLSS Quality at native monitor resolution Enable frame generation only after confirming a stable 60 FPS or higher base rate Use it for smoothness during travel or questing, not to solve a crowded-scene CPU limit

The game client’s Upscaler dropdown is the final authority on whether FSR is available. Do not assume that an AMD option is installed simply because another guide lists it; choose the option the current client actually exposes.

Set up the baseline before changing individual options

Start from a known configuration so each change has a visible result. Apply these steps in order:

  1. Select the monitor’s native resolution. Changing the display resolution and changing internal rendering resolution are separate decisions. Keep the output resolution native, then use the upscaler to control the internal workload.
  2. Choose DLSS Quality. If DLSS is unavailable but FSR appears in the Upscaler dropdown, select FSR Quality. Quality modes render a lower internal image and reconstruct it for the native output while retaining more fine detail than Balanced or Performance.
  3. Turn NVIDIA Reflex on. Reflex is the latency-oriented starting point for mouse and controller response.
  4. Turn V-Sync off. This is the starting point recommended for lower input latency in the cited settings guidance. If your display has a separate variable-refresh workflow, configure that independently rather than using V-Sync as an FPS fix.
  5. Leave frame generation off for the first test. You need to know the real, rendered base rate before adding generated frames.
  6. Keep textures high if the GPU has enough VRAM. Textures generally affect memory use and loading behavior more than frame rate when VRAM is sufficient, so they are a lower-priority cut than shadows and effects.
  7. Lower shadows and effects one step. These are among the largest direct FPS levers and usually cost less image clarity than dropping the internal resolution too aggressively.
  8. Test in the place that causes the problem. A quiet field does not reproduce a city crowd, a world boss, or a mass-combat encounter. Make the next change only after repeating the same demanding route or activity.

Why open-world areas cause larger drops

AION 2’s published world is described as roughly 36 times the size of the original Aion. Moving between regions therefore combines scene rendering with asset streaming, character simulation, effects, and network activity. A setting that looks harmless in an empty landscape can become expensive when dozens of players, combat effects, foliage, shadows, and streamed assets arrive together.

Two different limits can look like the same stutter:

  • GPU-bound drops: The graphics processor cannot render the current resolution, shadows, effects, foliage, or post-processing workload quickly enough. Upscaling and visual-quality reductions help this case.
  • CPU-bound drops: The processor is spending too long on player characters, combat logic, crowd simulation, or other scene work. Lowering internal resolution may do little, and frame generation cannot remove the underlying CPU workload.

Use a demanding location to identify which limit you have. If changing DLSS from Quality to Balanced produces a clear improvement, the GPU is contributing to the bottleneck. If the rate barely changes while reducing resolution but improves after lowering crowd or mass-combat settings, the scene is more CPU-limited.

DLSS, FSR, and the Quality-to-Performance trade-off

Upscaling changes the internal render resolution and reconstructs the result at your monitor’s output resolution. It is usually the fastest way to recover GPU-limited FPS, but every step down trades some fine detail for speed.

Mode Use it when Image and performance trade-off
Quality First choice at native resolution; suitable for normal open-world play, PvP, and boss mechanics Best detail retention among the listed modes while still reducing the internal GPU workload
Balanced Quality still falls short in crowded cities, events, or large groups More performance headroom with a visible reduction in reconstructed detail compared with Quality
Performance Only when the other modes cannot meet the required rate Lowest internal resolution of these choices; at 1080p, distant targets can become harder to read

At 1080p, avoid jumping straight to Performance. The lower internal image can make silhouettes, nameplates, terrain features, and distant enemies less legible, which is particularly costly during mechanics or PvP. Try Quality first, then Balanced, and reduce shadows or effects before accepting Performance’s clarity loss.

DLSS support is tied to compatible GeForce hardware and the game client. NVIDIA states that AION 2 launched with DLSS Frame Generation, DLSS Super Resolution, and NVIDIA Reflex support. A later December 24 update added DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50 Series GPUs, so the exact frame-generation choices depend on both your GPU generation and installed client version.

Which settings to lower first

Shadows

Shadows are a high-impact GPU setting in open scenes. Reducing them one step can lower the number and quality of shadow calculations without making textures or character models look soft. Make this one of the first changes when a Quality-upscaled image still misses your target rate.

Effects

Effects become especially expensive during spells, sieges, world bosses, and mass-combat events. Lowering effects reduces particle density and similar work that scales with the number of simultaneous attacks. It can also improve readability by preventing the screen from becoming a wall of overlapping particles.

Crowd and mass-combat options

When the frame rate collapses only around many players, reduce crowd-related and mass-combat options before lowering textures. These settings can reduce the amount of character and combat work the CPU and GPU must process. They are the most relevant controls for a city square, a large event, or a busy Abyss encounter.

Foliage

Foliage is another useful cut for open-world travel. Dense vegetation adds geometry, shading, and overdraw across a large view. Lower it when outdoor traversal is the problem, especially if the GPU is already close to its limit after shadows and effects have been reduced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Textures

Keep textures high when VRAM allows. The performance guidance identifies texture quality as more likely to affect memory use and loading behavior than average FPS under adequate VRAM. Lower textures when you see memory pressure, texture streaming problems, or hitching associated with insufficient video memory—not as the default response to every frame-rate drop.

Frame generation: when it helps and when it hurts

Frame generation inserts generated frames between traditionally rendered frames. It can make motion look smoother, but it does not replace the work required to simulate players, combat, or world logic. It also adds latency relative to the underlying base rate, so a high displayed number is not the same as a high responsive frame rate.

Keep it off below a 60 FPS base

The cited settings guidance recommends disabling frame generation below a 60 FPS base rate. If the game is rendering only 40 or 50 real frames per second, generated frames do not repair the underlying responsiveness or CPU limitation. First use Quality or Balanced upscaling and lower the demanding settings until the base rate is stable.

Use it for smooth solo or travel play

Once the game maintains at least 60 real FPS, frame generation can be reasonable for single-player questing, scenic travel, or a high-refresh display on a sufficiently powerful RTX 40- or RTX 50-series card. Test it while moving the camera and riding or flying; shimmering, ghosting, or inconsistent input can outweigh the smoother presentation.

Disable it in crowds, dungeons, and competitive fights

Leave frame generation off in crowded cities, dungeons, large Abyss battles, and competitive PvP. Those scenes are commonly limited by CPU simulation or demand precise input timing. Generated frames do not reduce the CPU workload, and their added latency can make a dodge, interrupt, or targeting adjustment feel late.

Profiles for common AION 2 activities

Balanced open-world PvE

Use native monitor resolution with DLSS Quality, Reflex on, and V-Sync off. Start with frame generation disabled. Reduce shadows and effects one step, then keep textures high if the card has enough VRAM. This profile protects terrain and character detail while giving the GPU room for ordinary travel, questing, and moderate groups.

Cities and large events

Begin with the same latency settings, then switch to DLSS Balanced if Quality still dips. Lower crowd and effects options, including mass-combat controls where available. Keep frame generation off if the frame-rate collapse follows the number of players rather than the visual resolution; that pattern points toward a CPU limit.

World bosses and large-scale battles

Choose DLSS Quality when it holds the required base rate; use Balanced when the encounter remains GPU-heavy. Reduce effects and crowd-related settings so attack telegraphs remain visible without asking the system to draw every participant at maximum complexity. Do not turn on frame generation as a substitute for a stable base rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Competitive PvP

Use DLSS Quality or Balanced according to the rate you can sustain in the actual arena or battlefield. Keep Reflex on, V-Sync off, and frame generation off. The goal is predictable input and readable opponents, not the largest displayed FPS figure. At 1080p in particular, avoid Performance unless the higher modes genuinely cannot maintain playability.

Cinematic travel on high-end hardware

On a strong RTX 40- or RTX 50-series card, use DLSS Quality and consider frame generation only after confirming a stable 60 FPS or higher base rate. This is the profile where extra smoothness is most likely to matter more than minimum latency. Turn it back off when entering a crowded activity.

Hardware requirements and what they mean

The published AION 2 performance guide lists the following dated tiers from NCSoft/AION2 KINA for 2026:

Tier Memory Graphics card API and storage
Minimum tier 8 GB RAM GTX 1050 Ti with 4 GB VRAM DirectX 12 and 100 GB storage
Recommended tier 16 GB RAM RTX 2070 with 8 GB VRAM DirectX 12 and 100 GB storage

These are published baseline tiers, not a guarantee of a particular FPS in a crowded city or a world boss encounter. Open-world density, output resolution, upscaling mode, and the number of players on screen can move performance substantially above or below what an empty test area suggests.

Storage, RAM, and GPU upgrade paths

Install the game on an SSD

The performance guide recommends an SSD and specifically notes that faster storage reduces hitching while flying across regions. A 1 TB NVMe SSD is the most straightforward capacity target: it comfortably exceeds the 100 GB requirement and leaves room for the operating system, updates, shader caches, and other games while supporting faster open-world asset streaming.

  • KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]

Add memory when the system is below 16 GB

Moving to a compatible 16 GB kit is a sensible second path when the computer is below the published recommended memory tier. Match the motherboard’s supported DDR generation, speed, capacity layout, and firmware requirements. More RAM will not cure a GPU-limited scene by itself, but insufficient system memory can increase loading pressure and background contention.

Upgrade the GPU for higher resolutions

A move toward the RTX 2070-class recommended tier is relevant when the current card cannot sustain Quality upscaling at the desired resolution. Select the exact model against the monitor resolution, power-supply capacity, case clearance, and budget. A GPU upgrade is most useful when changing DLSS from Quality to Balanced clearly improves performance; if the frame rate barely changes in crowds, the CPU and crowd settings deserve attention first.

Troubleshoot FPS drops without guessing

The rate is low everywhere

Confirm native output resolution, then test DLSS Quality and Balanced. If Balanced produces a large improvement, keep it or lower shadows and effects one step. Check that the game is using the intended GPU and that the installation is on an SSD. Do not enable frame generation until the rendered base rate is stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The rate is fine alone but collapses near players

Lower crowd, mass-combat, and effects settings. Keep frame generation off, because it does not reduce CPU simulation. If changing the upscaler has little effect, treat the scene as CPU-limited rather than continuing to sacrifice image quality.

Travel causes hitching rather than a sustained low rate

Prioritize the SSD installation and check available storage space for the 100 GB game requirement plus update headroom. Keep textures high only when VRAM is sufficient; if texture memory is saturated, reduce texture quality or close other GPU-heavy applications. Hitching during regional streaming is a different symptom from a consistently low average FPS.

Distant targets look too soft

At 1080p, return from Performance to Balanced or Quality. Restore textures if they were reduced unnecessarily, then lower shadows, effects, foliage, or crowd options instead. This preserves target readability while still cutting the settings that are more directly tied to open-world workload.

Input feels delayed after enabling frame generation

Turn frame generation off and compare the same activity with Reflex on and V-Sync off. If the base rate is below 60 FPS or the scene is a crowded battle, keep generation disabled. Smooth displayed motion cannot compensate for latency that is unacceptable for mechanics or PvP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable testing routine

Use a short, repeatable route rather than changing several controls at once. Begin in the area where the problem is visible, record the base behavior with DLSS Quality, then change only one of the following at a time: upscaler mode, shadows, effects, crowd settings, foliage, or textures. Revisit the same camera angle and movement path after each change.

Test three situations separately: an ordinary open-world route, a dense city or event, and the most demanding combat activity you regularly play. A profile that succeeds in the first test can still fail in the third. Keep separate notes for average smoothness, the severity of brief drops, image clarity, and input feel; choosing settings by a single FPS number hides the difference between a GPU limit and a CPU-limited crowd.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using Performance mode first at 1080p: It can make distant targets harder to read before you have tried Quality, Balanced, shadows, and effects reductions.
  • Lowering textures before shadows and effects: This spends image quality on a setting that often affects memory and loading more than frame rate when VRAM is adequate.
  • Using frame generation to fix a CPU-bound city: Generated frames do not reduce player simulation or crowd processing.
  • Testing only in an empty field: Open-world drops frequently appear only when crowds, effects, and streamed assets arrive together.
  • Assuming every client has FSR or every RTX card has the same DLSS options: Read the current Upscaler dropdown and account for GPU generation and client version.
  • Ignoring storage: A system that meets the graphics tier can still hitch during regional streaming if the game is not on an SSD.

Final settings checklist

  • Native monitor resolution.
  • DLSS Quality first; FSR Quality only when the client exposes it.
  • DLSS Balanced for persistent dips in cities, events, or large groups.
  • Reflex on and V-Sync off for the latency-oriented baseline.
  • Frame generation off below a stable 60 FPS base and during CPU-heavy crowds, dungeons, Abyss battles, and competitive PvP.
  • Lower shadows, effects, crowd, mass-combat, and foliage settings before sacrificing texture quality.
  • Keep textures high when VRAM allows.
  • Use an SSD, with a 1 TB NVMe drive as a practical capacity target.
  • Use the published 16 GB RAM, RTX 2070 8 GB, DirectX 12, and 100 GB storage tier as the recommended hardware reference, then account for your resolution and activity.
