The best-documented alternatives to Steam Link for PC VR streaming are Virtual Desktop and ALVR. Virtual Desktop is a paid, graphical option with support for several standalone headset families; ALVR is open source and supports Windows and Linux hosts, but asks more of you in setup and network configuration. Neither is a proven universal performance winner: check your headset, PC, game and home network before choosing.
What PC VR streaming does
With PC VR streaming, your gaming PC runs the game, sends video and audio to the headset, and receives the headset’s control input. It is not the same as running the game natively on a standalone headset. Steam describes Remote Play as sending video and audio to another device and returning input to the PC; its documentation says, “Steam Link with Remote Play technology delivers real-time video encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol.” Steam Remote Play

Before weighing image quality or convenience, verify four things: your exact headset model, the host computer’s operating system and video encoder, the game’s compatibility, and whether your local network can connect the PC and headset reliably. Official requirements do not establish a guaranteed streaming performance level.

Virtual Desktop: a polished paid option
Virtual Desktop is a paid app for streaming a computer desktop and PC VR games to supported standalone headsets. Its listed headset families include Meta Quest 1, 2, 3, 3S and Pro; Pico Neo 3, Pico 4 and Pico 4 Ultra; HTC Vive Focus 3, Vive XR Elite and Vive Vision; Play for Dream MR; and Samsung Galaxy XR. Check the developer’s current compatibility information for your exact model and game. Virtual Desktop official site and FAQ

PC and network requirements
Although the app supports general desktop use on Windows 10 or 11 64-bit and macOS, the developer says PC VR game streaming requires a VR-ready Windows PC. It recommends connecting that PC to the router by Ethernet and using a 5 GHz AC or AX Wi-Fi router for the headset. The developer also flags same-network conditions, firewall or VPN interference, and public apartment or office Wi-Fi that blocks communication between devices.
Who should consider it
Choose Virtual Desktop if you want a graphical paid app and broad standalone-headset coverage, and your Windows PC and games meet its requirements. Its general support for SteamVR or Oculus Rift games does not mean every title works; consult its game compatibility list. The available documentation does not establish that it is faster, sharper or more reliable than Steam Link or ALVR.

ALVR: an open-source option with more setup
ALVR streams PC VR games to a headset over Wi-Fi and requires SteamVR. Its project README lists Quest 1, 2, 3, 3S and Pro, Pico, Vive Focus, Play for Dream and other devices. Quest 1 is not available through the Meta store. ALVR lists Windows 10/11 and Linux hosts, but not macOS. ALVR project README
PC and network requirements
The gaming PC needs a supported video encoder and current drivers: NVIDIA NVENC on GTX 1000-series or newer cards, AMD AMF/VCE, or Intel VPL on supported chips. ALVR recommends 802.11ac 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the headset and Ethernet for the PC, with both devices on the same router unless you configure a routed connection.

Who should consider it
ALVR fits technically confident users who prefer open-source software, need a Linux host, or want to configure their streaming setup. Compared with a more guided app, expect to pay attention to SteamVR, encoder support and network configuration. The project’s device list is not a guarantee that every headset-store combination or game will work.

What about Air Link or a USB cable?
Meta Air Link is often mentioned as another wireless route, but current official requirements and supported headset/PC combinations are not established here, so verify Meta’s current documentation before choosing it or following setup instructions. A wired USB PC connection may suit someone who would rather use a cable than stream wirelessly; verify current official Link requirements for the relevant headset before buying a cable or configuring it.

The headset’s wireless connection and the PC’s path to the router are both part of the streaming setup. Steam’s Remote Play requirements list 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 as a minimum and recommend a wired PC-to-router link; its support FAQ recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. ALVR and Virtual Desktop likewise recommend 5 GHz wireless for the headset and a wired PC connection. Steam Link support Steam Remote Play

If your current router meets the relevant requirements and connects the devices reliably, you may not need to replace it. If not, a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router is a category to consider—not a guarantee of better results. An Ethernet cable can connect the PC to the router; the official requirements cited here do not establish a particular cable length or specification. Router placement, interference and network congestion can matter, and the cited pages do not promise a particular latency or image quality.
Choose by compatibility, then convenience
- Confirm the headset client. Look up your exact headset model and whether the app is available for it through the relevant store or official project.
- Check the host PC. For Virtual Desktop PC VR streaming, confirm a VR-ready Windows PC. For ALVR, confirm Windows or Linux, SteamVR, a supported encoder and current drivers.
- Check the game. Verify the individual title’s compatibility and required runtime instead of assuming that general headset support covers every game.
- Check the local network. Plan for 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the headset and, where recommended, Ethernet from PC to router. Shared or isolated public networks, VPNs and firewalls can prevent device communication.
- Choose the setup style. Virtual Desktop is a paid graphical option; ALVR is open source and exposes more configuration. Compare current storefront details rather than relying on an unverified price.
No controlled comparison in the cited official sources settles which option has the best latency, sharpness or reliability. Treat compatibility and your own network conditions as the decision points, not a claimed universal winner.
