Choose Steam Link if you mainly want to play games from your Steam library and your headset is supported. Choose Virtual Desktop if you want broader desktop-streaming features, its wider published headset list, or a workflow that suits games outside Steam. Neither is a proven universal winner for image quality or speed: the official sources here provide no controlled, current head-to-head benchmark.
Before deciding, check your exact headset model, where your games come from, whether your PC meets the requirements, and whether your home network can connect the PC to the router by cable while the headset uses suitable Wi-Fi.

Which app should you use?
Choose Steam Link for Steam-first PC VR
Steam Link is the straightforward starting point when your headset is supported and the games you want to stream are in Steam. It requires Steam and SteamVR to be running, and Valve describes the app as free in its November 2023 announcement. The Quest models named there are Quest 2, 3, and Pro; Steam Support’s current headset-family wording is broader, so verify your particular model rather than assuming every headset in a family is covered.

Choose Virtual Desktop for its broader feature set or listed headset support
Virtual Desktop may fit better if you want desktop access as well as PC VR streaming, or if your headset appears on its published list but not in Steam Link’s confirmed listing. Its vendor documents SteamVR and Oculus Rift game streaming on Windows, but warns that some games are incompatible. Confirm the exact game before buying or configuring it.

Do not choose on an assumed performance winner
The official sources do not establish that either app is consistently faster or sharper. Streaming results depend on the particular headset, PC, router, settings, and game; a claim about one setup should not be generalized to all others.
Check headset, games, PC, and Wi-Fi before setup
1. Confirm the exact headset and store listing
Look up the precise headset model in the current app-store listing or the relevant vendor support page. Steam’s current support wording names Meta, HTC Vive Focus, and PICO, while Valve’s dated announcement and Remote Play page specifically name Quest 2, 3, and Pro. Virtual Desktop publishes a longer model-by-model list. Availability and support can change, so do not infer support for a newer model from an older announcement.

Steam Link is focused on the Steam library. Virtual Desktop documents SteamVR and Oculus Rift streaming, but not all games are compatible; check the vendor’s game-compatibility list for the title you intend to play.

Valve’s November 2023 Steam Link announcement lists Windows 10 or newer, Steam and SteamVR, and an NVIDIA GTX 970 or better as minimums. It recommends at least 16 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA RTX 2070 or better, and Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. These are Valve’s requirements and recommendations, not guarantees of a particular frame rate or image quality. Valve’s announcement

The Meta store listing separately gives Quest 2, 3, and Pro minimums of Steam and SteamVR, Windows 10 or newer, GTX 970 or better, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5. It recommends an i5-4590/FX 8350 equivalent or better, 16 GB RAM, RTX 2070 or RX 6600 or better, Wi-Fi 6/6E, and a wired PC connection. That listing is Quest-specific, not the complete current headset list for Steam Link. Meta Store: Steam Link
Virtual Desktop’s vendor page lists Windows 10 or 11 64-bit or macOS for general computer requirements, but PC VR game streaming requires a VR-ready Windows 10/11 PC. Its stated baseline is GTX 970. Virtual Desktop

4. Check the home network layout
Both vendors’ guidance depends on the PC being wired to the router and the headset connecting wirelessly. Valve specifies 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the headset and recommends Wi-Fi 6 or 6E; Virtual Desktop asks for a 5 GHz AC or AX router. An Ethernet cable can provide the PC-to-router wired link if you do not already have one, but it does not guarantee stronger headset Wi-Fi or fix every connection issue.

Connection problems to check
If Virtual Desktop cannot find or connect to the PC, its support guidance identifies these possible causes:
- The headset and PC are not on the same network.
- Guest Wi-Fi isolation prevents devices from communicating with one another.
- A firewall blocks the connection.
- A VPN interferes with local network discovery or traffic.
- Public or shared Wi-Fi restricts device-to-device connections.
These are troubleshooting possibilities, not proof that any one setting is responsible. Check network membership and isolation first, then review firewall and VPN settings; follow the vendor’s support instructions before changing security protections.
Bottom line: choose for your setup, not a blanket benchmark claim
For a supported headset and Steam-only library, start with Steam Link. Prefer Virtual Desktop when its published headset support or desktop-streaming role better fits your needs, after checking game compatibility. In either case, confirm the current headset listing, PC requirements, and wired-PC/wi-fi-headset network arrangement before settling on an app.
