There is no current mass-market console that accepts original Atari 2600, Intellivision and ColecoVision cartridges in one box. The right purchase depends on your software: choose Atari 2600+ or Atari 7800+ for original Atari cartridges, Intellivision Sprint for an official HDMI Intellivision library, a used CollectorVision Phoenix for original ColecoVision cartridges, or Evercade hardware for licensed compilation cartridges. A Super Pocket Atari Edition is the least expensive legal portable Atari option, but it has no original-cartridge reader. The table below separates those very different approaches so you do not mistake built-in ROMs or licensed Evercade cartridges for compatibility with your own vintage games.

Which retro console matches the games you own?

If you own loose Atari 2600 or 7800 cartridges, start with the Atari 2600+ or 7800+. If your collection is Intellivision, the Intellivision Sprint supplies a curated built-in library but cannot read those cartridges. ColecoVision owners have one serious modern HDMI option, the discontinued CollectorVision Phoenix, so buying used is unavoidable. If you simply want legitimate collections rather than your original carts, Evercade offers the broadest current cartridge ecosystem, while the Super Pocket Atari Edition is the inexpensive handheld entry point.

  • Atari 2600 cartridges: Atari 2600+ for the wood-panel design and included joystick; 7800+ for its wireless two-button controller.
  • Atari 7800 cartridges: Either Atari+ machine; the 7800+ is the natural controller match.
  • Intellivision games: Sprint for plug-and-play television use; Evercade Intellivision collections if you prefer a cartridge-based licensed library.
  • ColecoVision cartridges: Used CollectorVision Phoenix; there is no new, widely retailed equivalent.
  • Portable play: Super Pocket Atari Edition for Atari, or an Evercade handheld for licensed Atari and Intellivision collections.

Does the Atari 2600+ play original cartridges?

Yes. Atari says the 2600+ plays both original Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges, including Atari XP releases. The console uses software emulation rather than the original Atari chips: Stella handles the 2600 side, and the machine reads the cartridge before running the game through that emulator. Atari’s official wording is “most” cartridges; iTechGuides reported Atari’s launch claim of 99 percent compatibility after testing just under 600 games, which is a manufacturer figure rather than an independent census. WIRED also reported that some cartridges do not work and that compatible carts take a few seconds to load.

The $129.99 package includes the console, a wired CX40+ joystick with DB9 connector, HDMI cable, USB-C power cable and a 10-in-1 cartridge containing Adventure, Combat, Dodge ’Em, Haunted House, Maze Craze, Missile Command, RealSports Volleyball, Surround, Video Pinball and Yars’ Revenge. A USB power adapter is not included. Atari lists a Rockchip 3128 processor, 256MB DDR3 RAM and 256MB of fixed 256MB eMMC storage. The enlarged cartridge socket is intended to reduce sticking, and the front logo illuminates during play. The official retailer listing is available through this Atari 2600+ listing.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

HDMI output supports a widescreen mode for modern televisions. You can switch to 4:3 when the original proportions matter more. The included CX40+ is appropriate for most joystick games; paddle titles such as Breakout and Kaboom-class games need dedicated CX30+ paddles, which are sold separately. Firmware updates can change compatibility, so check Atari’s published cartridge list before assuming an unusual homebrew or accessory will work.

What is the difference between Atari 2600+ and 7800+?

Both systems read Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges over HDMI and use software emulation. The decision is mainly about case design, controller and the included game.

Choose the 2600+ if the wood-panel replica, classic one-button stick and included 2600 games are the priority. Choose the 7800+ if you want the 7800’s two-button layout, wireless play and its platformer pack-in. A second CX78+ pad is the straightforward upgrade for two-player games. Atari’s current page says the 7800+ is available through regional retailers, but it did not show a U.S. dollar MSRP in the current listing. Comments on Atari’s product page report lag when paddle games are emulated on the 7800+, so serious paddle players should budget for the 2600+ and dedicated paddles instead.

Firmware 2.0.1.5 for the Atari+ platform was reported by AtariAge forum users to retain high scores for many 7800 games. Treat that as a firmware-dependent feature and confirm the version before buying or updating.

Is Intellivision Sprint a cartridge console?

No. Intellivision Sprint has no cartridge slot and cannot play original Intellivision cartridges or homebrew cartridges. It is an HDMI plug-and-play system with 45 built-in games, two rechargeable wireless disc controllers and the jzIntv software emulator. Atari describes jzIntv as a highly accurate, well-supported standalone emulator; that is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent latency measurement.

The console includes an HDMI cable and USB-C power cable, but no AC adapter. Its USB-A port supports original Intellivision II controllers when used with an adapter and allows additional digital titles sold separately. The controller docks charge in the console, preserving the distinctive disc-and-keypad experience without a cable across the room.

  • Tower of Doom; Triple Action (Racing Cars, Biplanes and Battle Tanks); Triple Challenge (Chess, Checkers and Backgammon); Utopia; Vectron.

Atari’s U.S. materials claim 96 single-sided overlays in the box, while the specifications section says 92 total. Atari’s EMEA description and press coverage instead describe two double-sided overlays per game. The safe buying expectation is that keypad artwork is supplied for the library, but the exact counting and sidedness differ by regional documentation.

Atari acquired the Intellivision name, trademarks, intellectual property and rights to more than 200 classic games in May 2024; that acquisition did not include the Amico console. Sprint’s 45 games are therefore a selection, not a promise that every Intellivision title is available on the machine.

Can you buy a modern ColecoVision console with HDMI?

The CollectorVision Phoenix is the notable answer, but it is a used-market purchase. CollectorVision describes it as an open-source FPGA ColecoVision-compatible system that plays all ColecoVision games. The company is not planning another production run or sequel, so there is no current mass-retail replacement comparable to Atari 2600+.

Phoenix includes an original-style ColecoVision cartridge port, ColecoVision and Atari DB9 controller ports, an SNES/SFC controller port, HDMI video and digital audio, F18A video-enhanced compatibility, Opcode SGM support, an expansion-module port, SD-card firmware updates and PS/2 keyboard input. Its FPGA design is different from the software-emulation approach used by Atari 2600+, 7800+ and Sprint. It also contains ColecoVision and Atari 2600 cores and room for 30 core slots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When buying used, verify that the cartridge connector accepts your format, that the seller includes the correct power supply and video cable, and that the FPGA firmware updates from an SD card. Ask for photographs of the cartridge slot and controller ports rather than assuming every listing is complete. A ColecoVision multicart is an accessory for original ColecoVision hardware, not a replacement console. Legacy plug-and-play products such as ColecoVision Flashback are discontinued products with preloaded games, not current official cartridge readers.

Are Evercade consoles compatible with original Atari or Intellivision cartridges?

No. Evercade is a licensed compilation ecosystem: its cartridges contain authorized collections designed for Evercade hardware. They do not turn an Evercade device into a reader for original Atari 2600, Intellivision or ColecoVision cartridges. This is the best route when you want curated, legal collections and modern hardware rather than preservation of your own cartridge collection.

Evercade VS-R for the television

The VS-R is the current Evercade TV box. It outputs 1080p over HDMI, has two cartridge slots, built-in Wi-Fi and four USB controller ports for up to four players. Atari and Intellivision collections are available as Evercade cartridges, and the library spans more than 500 officially licensed games across the ecosystem. Cartridge prices are commonly reported around $20–$30, but the exact collection and retailer determine the price.

Price reporting differs by source: RetroTechLab’s October 2026 check lists $119.99 U.S., while TrendyTechTribe reported a $99.99 launch price; WIRED’s March 2025 retail snapshot showed units around $130. Treat those as time-specific market figures and re-check the current listing before purchase. The original Evercade VS was discontinued in 2024 and is now second-hand only.

Evercade EXP-R for portable play

EXP-R is the current full-size Evercade handheld, with a 4.3-inch IPS display and TATE mode for vertically oriented games. It uses the same licensed cartridge family as VS-R. It is often bundled with Tomb Raider Collection 1, but that bundle does not add compatibility with original Atari or Intellivision cartridges. The original EXP was discontinued in 2024.

Super Pocket Atari Edition for the lowest price

The Super Pocket Atari Edition costs $59.99 and includes 50 Atari games drawn from Lynx, 7800, 5200, 2600 and arcade catalogs. It has a 2.8-inch 320×240 IPS screen, a 3.5mm headphone jack, USB-C charging, more than four hours of stated battery life, and an Evercade cartridge slot that opens access to more than 500 games across over 60 released collections. It weighs 0.27kg and measures 12cm × 19cm × 3.5cm.

The built-in selection includes 2600 titles such as Adventure, Haunted House, Solaris, Tempest and Yars’ Revenge; 7800 games such as Asteroids, Food Fight and Ninja Golf; 5200 games including Bounty Bob Strikes Back!; Lynx titles such as Checkered Flag and Warbirds; and arcade games including Asteroids, Berzerk, Crystal Castles and Missile Command. It does not accept original 2600 cartridges and has no Intellivision or ColecoVision built-in games.

Evercade Nexus for a premium handheld

Evercade Nexus launched on 30 October 2026 at $199.99 in the United States, £169.99 in the United Kingdom and €199.99 in the euro area. It has a 5.89-inch screen, dual analog sticks, Wi-Fi 6 and EverSync local wireless multiplayer, and ships with the Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack. It remains an Evercade cartridge device, not an original-cartridge reader. Independent reviews were not available in the supplied launch information, so evaluate it from its published hardware and library fit rather than unverified performance claims.

What is the difference between FPGA, emulation and licensed compilations?

These labels describe how a console reproduces games and what software you can legally use.

  • Software emulation: Atari 2600+, Atari 7800+ and Intellivision Sprint run emulator software on a modern processor. Cartridge reading on the Atari+ machines does not mean the original chips are present.
  • FPGA recreation: CollectorVision Phoenix recreates ColecoVision behavior in programmable logic and accepts original cartridges. It is closer to a hardware recreation, but availability is limited to used units.
  • Licensed compilation: Evercade and Super Pocket cartridges contain authorized game collections in their own format. They are convenient and legitimate, but physically incompatible with vintage cartridges.
  • Original hardware: A working vintage console paired with an HDMI upscaler remains an option for collectors, although it is outside current retail console models and requires maintenance.

Emulation software itself is legal; downloading ROMs for games you do not own is not. Licensed Evercade collections and the built-in libraries above avoid that legal and preservation problem. Generic “hundreds-in-one” mini consoles should not be treated as official Atari, Intellivision or ColecoVision products.

What accessories should you budget for?

  • Atari 2600+: CX30+ paddles for paddle games and an extra CX40+ joystick for two-player sessions.
  • Atari 7800+: a second CX78+ wireless pad; check firmware and game-specific controller needs.
  • Intellivision Sprint: a USB adapter if you want to connect original Intellivision II controllers, plus a 5V USB-C power adapter because the console cable is included without an AC plug.
  • All three Atari/Intellivision consoles: a suitable USB power adapter; HDMI cables are included with 2600+, 7800+ and Sprint.
  • Evercade: the specific Atari or Intellivision collection cartridges that match your preferred hardware; original vintage cartridges will not substitute.
  • Phoenix: confirm the used listing includes compatible controllers, power, HDMI and any SD-card firmware materials.

How were these consoles selected?

The ranking follows the decision factors that matter for this specific library: whether a system accepts original cartridges, which of the three platforms it covers, whether it uses FPGA or software emulation, HDMI living-room versus handheld play, controller fidelity, expansion options, current availability and the published price band. Products that are adjacent but do not play Atari 2600, Intellivision or ColecoVision software were left out, including Atari 8-bit/5200-focused minis, general handhelds that depend on user-supplied ROMs and discontinued flashback units.

Frequently asked questions

Will an Atari 2600+ preserve my cartridge save data?

Cartridge behavior depends on the game and firmware rather than a universal save system. Atari’s published compatibility list and later firmware notes are the authoritative checks for unusual cartridges; do not assume a save feature from one 7800 title applies to every cartridge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use original Intellivision overlays with Sprint?

Sprint supplies keypad overlays for its built-in games, but its controller design and overlay documentation vary by region. Original overlays may not align with every included digital title, so use the supplied artwork for the most reliable button mapping.

Is a used Phoenix safer than modifying vintage ColecoVision hardware?

Phoenix avoids aging ColecoVision power supplies and provides HDMI directly, but a used unit has its own risks: missing accessories, worn cartridge contacts and outdated firmware. Ask the seller for a boot photo and a cartridge test, and make sure returns are allowed.
