The best fighting game after Street Fighter depends on what you want to learn next. Choose Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising if traditional motion inputs are your main concern, Guilty Gear -Strive- if you want the most clearly documented guided-learning tools, Tekken 8 if you want to learn 3D movement, or Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves if you want accessible controls wrapped around a deeper system.
None is provably the universal “easiest fighting game.” Beginner-friendly controls only remove one barrier; you still have to learn blocking, spacing, timing, matchups and decision-making. The useful question is which game makes the next skill you want to practice understandable and motivating.

What fighting game should I play after Street Fighter?
Start with the game that matches the kind of difficulty you want, rather than treating “beginner-friendly” as a single rating. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising keeps the familiar 2D, round-based structure while offering a particularly low-execution route. Guilty Gear -Strive- adds a strong teaching layer and a very different anime-fighter identity. Tekken 8 changes the spatial problem entirely with sidesteps, lanes and position-sensitive attacks. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves lets you begin with Smart Style, then exposes you to a more system-heavy SNK ruleset.
That distinction matters because a player can find simple inputs comfortable but dislike air movement, or enjoy 3D movement while struggling with long command lists. The recommendations below are fit-based choices, not a verified difficulty ranking.

How do these games differ for a new player?
The five useful comparison axes are execution, teaching support, combat format, solo onboarding and motivation. Looking at all five prevents a short beginner combo list from hiding a game’s real learning curve.
| Axis | What to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Execution barrier | Can you perform specials and basic combos immediately, or are traditional inputs expected? | Lower execution friction lets you practice decisions sooner, but it does not remove the need for timing and spacing. |
| Teaching support | Are there tutorials, missions, adaptive advice, replay analysis or recording tools? | Specific feedback turns a loss into a practice goal instead of a vague feeling that you are “bad.” |
| Combat format | Is it a grounded 2D fighter or a 3D fighter with positional movement? | Street Fighter fundamentals transfer, but movement, attack coverage and defense work differently in 3D. |
| Solo onboarding | Can you learn through Story, Arcade, training or other CPU-facing modes? | Solo modes let you learn controls and terminology before entering stressful online matches. |
| Motivation and identity | Do you prefer anime spectacle, fantasy RPG presentation, 3D martial arts or classic SNK style? | A game you want to return to makes regular practice more likely than a theoretically easier game you do not enjoy. |
Is Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising the best first alternative?
It is the strongest fit for a Street Fighter player whose first obstacle is execution. Cygames documents three control choices—Manual, Smart and Super Ultimate—and describes Super Ultimate as being for “beginners that want to jump right into the fray.” Smart controls are aimed at players who want to perform combos by mashing buttons, while Manual preserves the traditional input route.

What makes its controls approachable?
You can begin with a simplified scheme without pretending that the game has no depth. One-button or assisted actions let you concentrate on recognizing an opening, choosing an attack and confirming whether it connected. As you improve, switching toward Manual controls gives you a way to practice conventional motions without having to relearn the entire game.
That progression separates execution practice from decision practice. You still need to understand when to block, when to challenge, how far your buttons reach and which opponent actions are punishable. Smart or Super Ultimate controls do not automatically teach those skills, and an assisted combo that is unsafe or poorly timed can still lose the exchange.
Which solo modes help before online play?
Cygames lists Story, Arcade and Training modes, along with online-lobby play. Story and Arcade provide CPU-facing opportunities to learn the rhythm of rounds and identify a character whose tools make sense to you. Training is where you should verify the range of a normal attack, practice blocking and test one reliable punish before worrying about elaborate routes.
Who should choose it?
- Choose it if motion inputs are the reason you have avoided another fighting game.
- Choose it if you want a 2D format that still feels recognizable after Street Fighter.
- Choose it if you prefer to learn offline first through Story, Arcade and Training.
- Do not choose it solely because simplified controls sound like an easy mode; matchup knowledge and neutral decisions remain substantial.
Cygames identifies PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Steam among the game’s platforms. Platform availability, online-service status and current editions can change, so check the current store listing before buying.

Does Guilty Gear -Strive- have the best learning tools?
It has the strongest documented guided-learning toolkit in this group. Arc System Works describes a Tutorial that adjusts advice to your inputs and skills, a Mission mode and Combo Maker recommendations that range from beginner to advanced. The official guide says, “You can get advice adjusted to your inputs and skills, so you can find the next step to up your game!”
How should a beginner use the tutorial and missions?
Use the Tutorial to establish the basic language of the game, then use Mission mode to isolate one concept at a time. A sensible order is movement and blocking, anti-air responses, throws and throw escapes, confirming a hit, and only then character-specific routes. If a mission feels too difficult, return to a simpler one rather than treating completion as a prerequisite for playing matches.
Combo Maker recommendations give you a menu of routes instead of forcing you to copy a tournament sequence. Start with a short punish and a simple corner option. The point is to recognize when the route applies; a combo you can identify and finish consistently is more useful than a longer one you attempt at random.
What makes it different from Street Fighter?
The fundamentals still include blocking, anti-airs, throws and hit confirms, but the game’s air movement, character-specific tools and distinctive systems create a different pace. You may need to account for attacks that approach from unusual angles, characters with very different neutral plans and situations where a standard Street Fighter habit produces the wrong answer.

That variety is a strength if presentation and personality motivate you. It is also a warning: the tutorial can teach the rules, but you will still have to learn how your chosen character changes those rules in practice.
Who should choose it?
- Choose it if you want explicit, staged instruction rather than relying on community videos.
- Choose it if an anime visual identity will keep you practicing.
- Choose it if you are comfortable learning a 2D fighter whose movement and character tools differ noticeably from Street Fighter.
- Do not assume that a good tutorial makes every character equally simple; character-specific decisions remain part of the work.
Should I try Tekken 8 if I only know Street Fighter?
Yes, if your goal is to learn a 3D fighter—not if you merely want an easier version of Street Fighter. Bandai Namco documents structured tutorial systems, Arcade Quest and replay analysis that identifies moments where matches were decided. Those features provide an on-ramp, but the underlying spatial model is different.

What changes when movement becomes 3D?
In a 2D fighter, the primary problem is usually controlling distance along one line while managing jumps and attacks. Tekken adds sidesteps, tracking, wall position and attacks whose usefulness depends on the opponent’s angle. A move can be safe in one position and vulnerable in another, while a sidestep can evade a linear attack but lose to a tracking option.
Approach Tekken as a new movement subject. Learn how to move forward and backward, sidestep deliberately, recognize a basic launcher and tech a standard throw before attempting a large character command list. Your Street Fighter experience with blocking, whiff punishment and patience transfers; your assumptions about jump-ins and spacing need adjustment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do Arcade Quest and replay analysis help?
Arcade Quest supplies a structured route through matches and lessons rather than dropping you immediately into ranked play. Replay analysis then points to moments where a match was decided, giving you a concrete clip to investigate. Use that information to ask one question: did you lose because you pressed into an unsafe situation, failed to defend a repeated approach, or stood in the wrong position?
After identifying one mistake, reproduce the situation in practice and test a single response. Do not try to correct every exchange in one session. Tekken’s volume of moves makes a narrow practice target more valuable than memorizing a broad list.
Who should choose it?
- Choose it if sidesteps, walls and position-sensitive attacks are the reason 3D fighting interests you.
- Choose it if replay review sounds more useful than a long list of written lessons.
- Choose it if you accept that your first goal is learning a new spatial model, not transferring every Street Fighter habit.
- Do not choose it expecting the same neutral geometry with different characters.
Is Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves simple to control but deep enough to grow?
That is its clearest appeal. SNK documents Smart Style for beginners, with one-button special moves and quick auto-combos, alongside Arcade Style for the technical control route. The official manual describes Smart Style as: “Smart is for more accessible fighting. Perform special moves at the push of a button and quick auto-combos with ease. Perfect for beginners too!”
What does Smart Style remove—and what does it leave?
Smart Style reduces the mechanical barrier to special moves and short combos. It does not remove the game’s gauges, REV mechanics, guard decisions, spacing or timing. You still have to decide when to spend resources, when to challenge pressure and how to position yourself for a favorable exchange.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Arcade Style is available when you want the conventional technical route. Treat the two schemes as a progression option, not as separate games: begin with Smart Style to learn the cast and system interactions, then move selected characters or situations to Arcade Style as your execution goals become clearer.
How strong are its training tools?
SNK’s Training manual documents opponent control, recording and replay, input history, attack data, adjustable health and meter parameters, restart positions and button configuration. That is enough to build targeted drills: record an opponent’s approach, replay it until the defense is automatic, inspect your input history when a special move fails and reset to the exact position you want to study.
Ranked Match also documents a first-time skill selection with Newcomer, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced options. Select the description that matches your actual experience rather than choosing a higher label to prove something. The goal is to get matches in which you can recognize why an exchange was won or lost.
Who should choose it?
- Choose it if you want accessible controls but do not want a shallow ruleset.
- Choose it if detailed recording, replay and input-data tools are central to how you learn.
- Choose it if SNK’s classic presentation and the REV system appeal to you.
- Do not mistake Smart Style for an automatic solution to resource management or matchup knowledge.
How do I choose between these four games?
Answer the following questions in order. Your first “yes” is usually the best starting point, but the final choice should also pass the motivation test: will you want to practice this game next week?
- Are motion inputs your main barrier? Start with Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising and use Smart or Super Ultimate controls while you learn spacing and defense.
- Do you want the most explicit learning path? Choose Guilty Gear -Strive- for its adaptive Tutorial, Mission mode and graded Combo Maker recommendations.
- Do you specifically want 3D movement? Choose Tekken 8 and treat sidesteps, tracking and wall position as new fundamentals.
- Do you want one-button access now and technical depth later? Choose Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, using Smart Style first and Training mode to study its systems.
- Are you unsure? Pick the game whose presentation and characters make you curious. A modest control advantage is less important than returning often enough to build habits.
What should a beginner practice first?
Use a small, repeatable curriculum. The exact move names differ, but the learning order below works across all four games.
- Learn movement and defense. In Training, walk, dash or sidestep, then block for several seconds. Confirm how to crouch-block or guard against the attacks your character is likely to face.
- Choose one fast attack. Find a quick normal or jab and learn its range. Practice stopping an opponent’s approach with it instead of searching for a long combo.
- Practice one anti-air or vertical answer. Record a jump-in or equivalent airborne approach where the game allows it, then repeat the response until the timing is familiar.
- Learn one punish. Test what your character can do after blocking a clearly unsafe attack. Keep the punish short enough to perform under pressure.
- Add one hit confirm. Practice converting only when the first attack connects. If the starter is blocked, return to defense rather than completing the same sequence automatically.
- Review one loss. Use replay analysis where available, or note one repeated situation yourself. Recreate that situation in Training and test one response.
This approach keeps execution, recognition and decision-making connected. A longer combo list can wait until you know when the combo is actually appropriate.

What mistakes make a beginner-friendly game feel difficult?
The most common problems are practice errors, not proof that you selected the wrong title.
- Changing controls every session: choose one scheme long enough to build muscle memory. Change it for a deliberate learning reason, not after one frustrating match.
- Learning only combos: a combo matters only after you earn a hit. Spend at least as much time on blocking, movement and punishes.
- Skipping solo onboarding: Story, Arcade, Arcade Quest or missions can teach the interface and pacing before online matches expose every weakness at once.
- Trying to fix everything after a loss: identify one decisive situation and practice one response.
- Confusing assisted controls with an easy game: Smart, Super Ultimate or similar schemes lower execution friction; they do not make neutral, defense or resource choices automatic.
- Choosing by genre label alone: two 2D fighters can have very different movement and system demands, while a 3D fighter asks you to rethink positioning altogether.
What is the practical verdict?
For the smoothest transition from Street Fighter with the least initial execution pressure, begin with Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising. For the clearest documented teaching structure, choose Guilty Gear -Strive-. For a deliberate move into 3D fighting, choose Tekken 8. For accessible controls paired with a more technical SNK system and unusually detailed practice options, choose Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.
Whichever you pick, set a first-week goal that is smaller than “learn the game”: block one common approach, land one punish, perform one reliable conversion and review one losing situation. Those habits—not a claim that one title is objectively easiest—are what turn a beginner into a progressing player.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a fight stick or leverless controller for these games?
You can begin with the controller you already understand; none of the documented beginner paths requires buying dedicated hardware. Consider a different controller only after you can identify a specific input or comfort problem, and verify compatibility for your platform and edition before purchasing.
Should I start with ranked matches or casual matches?
Start wherever the game lets you face opponents without making the result your only goal. Early matches are most useful when you track one practice target—such as blocking a specific approach—and review whether you attempted it, regardless of the win-loss result.
How long should I stay on simplified controls?
Stay with them until they let you focus on decisions rather than button uncertainty. Switch a character or a single situation to the technical scheme when you can explain what execution skill you want to develop; changing everything at once makes it harder to tell what improved.
Do Street Fighter fundamentals transfer to Tekken?
Blocking, patience, whiff punishment and recognizing turn-taking remain valuable. The transfer is incomplete because sidesteps, tracking attacks, walls and 3D positioning change which attacks are reliable and where you are safe.
