Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a first small game, start with a deliberately limited 2D project. Choose Godot if you are willing to learn scripting, GDevelop if you want visual, no-code logic first, or GameMaker if you want a strongly 2D-focused workflow with a free starting tier. There is no reliable universal “easiest” engine: the right choice depends on your coding comfort, target platform, project scope and the licensing or export terms you need.
What makes an engine beginner-friendly?
An engine is beginner-friendly when it gives you a clear path from an empty project to a playable build, explains the concepts in an order you can follow, and lets you work within a manageable scope. A large feature list is less important than whether you can understand the editor, make a player move, detect collisions, add a win or lose condition, and export a build without changing tools halfway through.

For a first project, separate two ideas that are often conflated:

- A coding-learning on-ramp: You write scripts from the start and learn programming concepts through a structured tutorial.
Both are valid. A visual workflow can get you to a prototype quickly, while a scripted workflow teaches skills that transfer directly to future systems and projects. Choose by your coding comfort
If you want to write code from the beginning
Godot is the clearest fit among these options. Its official documentation provides a complete first 2D game and introduces a scripted workflow. The same documentation explicitly recommends beginning with 2D because 3D games tend to be more complicated for newcomers. You will still need to learn variables, functions, input, scenes or objects, collision handling and debugging, but the tutorial gives those ideas a concrete context.
If you want to make a game before learning a programming language
GDevelop is designed around events: a condition is checked, then one or more actions run. You can assemble rules such as “when the player overlaps the key, add one to the score” without writing syntax. Its materials also cover basic game-making concepts and guided tutorials. JavaScript is available when visual events no longer express what you need, so the no-code start does not prevent a later move into scripting.
If your priority is a 2D workflow
GameMaker is worth considering when you want a tool centered on 2D production and a free way to begin. The official product information lists a broad set of desktop, mobile, web and console destinations. Because the available professional or commercial rights can differ by platform and plan, treat the free tier as a way to learn and prototype until you have checked the current terms for release.

Godot: best for learning a conventional scripted workflow
What the beginner path looks like
Godot’s first-2D-game documentation is a step-by-step route to a complete small game rather than a collection of disconnected feature demonstrations. The documentation says, “If you are new to game development or unfamiliar with Godot, we recommend starting with 2D games.” That advice is about reducing the number of systems you must understand at once, not about limiting what you can eventually build.
The tutorial also states that it assumes some programming experience. If you have never used a variable, loop, function or event-driven input system, begin with the introductory getting-started material before attempting the complete game. Otherwise, you may be able to follow the clicks while missing the reasons behind the code.
Languages and project scope
The official introduction includes examples in GDScript and C#. For a first project, use one language consistently instead of translating every example. A small top-down collector, one-screen platformer or dodge game is a better learning target than an open world, online game or physics sandbox. Build the smallest playable loop first: start, move, encounter one hazard, reach one objective and restart.

Cost and export considerations
Godot is completely free and open source under the permissive MIT license, according to the Godot Engine documentation. Its official material describes export to desktop, mobile, web and consoles. “Export” does not mean every destination has identical setup, certification or cost requirements; check the current instructions for the specific platform before designing around it.

Godot’s page labeled “latest” warns that it may document features unavailable in released stable versions. Use the stable documentation for a project you intend to finish, and confirm that a tutorial’s editor version matches the version installed on your computer. If a menu, node or property is missing, a version mismatch is a more likely explanation than a mistake in your project.
GDevelop: best for a visual, no-code first prototype
How events replace initial scripting
GDevelop’s core model is an event system made of conditions and actions. Conditions describe when a rule should run; actions change an object, scene, variable or game state. For example, a condition can detect a collision between the player and a coin, while an action removes the coin and increases the score. This structure lets you reason about game logic without first memorizing a programming language.
Learning materials and the JavaScript escape hatch
The official documentation points beginners toward basic game-making concepts and guided tutorials. Follow one complete tutorial before building a large original project so you learn how scenes, objects, behaviors, variables and events fit together. When an event sheet becomes awkward or you need custom calculations, JavaScript can extend the project. That makes GDevelop suitable both for a strictly visual start and for a gradual transition into code.
Publishing routes and plan limits
GDevelop’s official materials describe routes to web, desktop, Android and iOS. The iOS route references development tools, and publication capabilities can depend on the plan. The product’s plan and export features may change, so verify the current limits before promising a store release. A free tier is enough to learn the workflow and test a small game, but “free to start” should not be interpreted as “every export and publishing service is free.”

When it is the better first choice
Choose GDevelop when visible feedback matters more to you than learning a language immediately, or when you want a child, class or non-programmer to participate in building the game. It is also a practical choice for a short prototype whose mechanics can be expressed as straightforward event rules.

GameMaker: best for a 2D-centered workflow
Why consider it
GameMaker’s official site emphasizes 2D development, free tutorials and a free tier for making a first game. That combination makes it a reasonable candidate for a small platformer, arcade game, top-down adventure or puzzle game when you want a dedicated 2D tool rather than a general-purpose 3D environment.
Platforms listed by the product information
The product page lists Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, HTML5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Platform availability and the rights to publish commercially can depend on the professional tier and on requirements imposed by the destination platform. Confirm those details before you build your project around a console or mobile release.
How to evaluate it as a beginner
Start with one of the official free tutorials and finish a tiny game before deciding whether the editor and scripting model suit you. The available material supports using GameMaker as a 2D first-game tool, but a specific, verified tutorial progression was not established alongside the Godot and GDevelop paths. If you need a fully documented, end-to-end tutorial immediately, compare the tutorial’s version and scope with your own learning style before committing.

A practical first-game plan for any engine
1. Pick a deliberately tiny design
Choose one mechanic and one success condition. Examples include collecting five items while avoiding one enemy, surviving for 30 seconds, reaching the end of a short platforming room or clearing a single puzzle screen. Avoid accounts, online multiplayer, procedural worlds, inventories, dialogue trees and multiple playable characters in the first project.
2. Define the minimum playable loop
- Create a start state and a restart path.
- Give the player one controllable character or cursor.
- Add one obstacle, opponent or rule that creates failure.
- Add one objective that creates success.
- Display a basic result such as score, timer, win message or game-over message.
If the loop is not fun or understandable with placeholder shapes, more art will not fix it. Test the loop before adding menus, soundtracks or elaborate effects.
3. Follow one complete learning path
Use Godot’s complete first-2D-game tutorial if you are comfortable with introductory programming. Use GDevelop’s beginner concepts and guided tutorials if you want visual events. Use GameMaker’s free tutorials if a 2D-focused editor is your priority. Do not jump between engines because one tutorial uses a different term for the same idea; finish a small build first, then compare tools from experience.

4. Replace one placeholder at a time
After the loop works, replace the player shape, then the main obstacle, then the background, then the user interface. Keep an untouched copy of the working prototype. When a new asset or effect breaks the game, you can identify the last change instead of debugging an entire redesign.
5. Test on the intended input and screen
A keyboard prototype can feel fine while a touch build is unusable. Test the actual input method and aspect ratio you intend to support. For web games, test in the browsers you plan to list. For mobile or console targets, read the current export and certification requirements before treating a desktop prototype as nearly finished.
Keep the first project small enough to finish
- One scene or a few short rooms: More scenes multiply loading, state and testing problems.
- One control scheme: Add alternate controls only after the primary scheme works.
- One resource type: A single score or health value is easier to display and reset than a full economy.
- One enemy behavior: A predictable patrol or chase teaches collision and state changes without requiring advanced artificial intelligence.
- Short sessions: A game that can be completed in a few minutes gives you more chances to test the complete loop.
Set a finish date and a cut list. If a feature is not required to start, play, win or lose, move it to a later project. The goal of the first game is a complete build, not a miniature version of your dream game.
Export, licensing and platform checks
Engine support lists describe possible destinations, not a guarantee that every destination is equally simple or included in every tier. Before choosing an engine, check:
- Whether your operating system can run the current editor and export tools.
- Whether the target export is available in the plan you can use.
- Whether the destination requires separate development tools, accounts, signing certificates or approval.
- Whether commercial use, console access or advanced publishing features require a paid tier.
- Whether the tutorial and editor versions match.
Godot’s MIT licensing gives it a free, open-source starting path. GDevelop and GameMaker also document free starting options, but their plan features and export terms can change. Read the current official pricing, licensing and platform pages at the moment you are preparing to publish, not only when you begin learning.

The tutorial does not match the editor
Check the tutorial’s version label and the version installed on your computer. In Godot, the “latest” documentation can describe unreleased features; switch to stable documentation or install the version the tutorial expects. In any engine, do not rename objects or reorganize folders until the tutorial’s basic version works.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
You can build features but cannot finish a game
Reduce the design to one room, one mechanic and one outcome. Make a playable build before adding art, menus or additional levels. A small finished game teaches more about input, state, testing and export than a large unfinished project.
The no-code event sheet has become difficult to debug
Group events by purpose, use descriptive object and variable names, and test one condition at a time. Add JavaScript only for logic that is genuinely clearer in code; mixing visual events and scripts without a naming convention can make the project harder to maintain.
The scripted project feels overwhelming
Work through the introductory programming material before the complete game tutorial. Copying a line is not the same as understanding it: pause after each feature and explain what data changes, what triggers the code and what should happen when the condition is false.
The export works on your computer but fails elsewhere
Read the destination-specific export instructions, test a clean build and verify the required tools, signing steps and permissions. Treat desktop success as a prototype milestone, not proof that a mobile, web or console release is ready.
Decision guide
- Do you want to avoid code at first? Choose GDevelop and start with its event-based beginner material.
- Are you willing to learn scripting and want a structured complete tutorial? Choose Godot, begin in 2D and use stable documentation.
- Do you mainly want a dedicated 2D workflow with a free starting tier? Try GameMaker’s official tutorials, then confirm the platform and commercial terms for your intended release.
- Are you unsure? Build the same one-room prototype in the tool whose learning path you can follow most comfortably. The fastest route to a finished small game is more valuable than an abstract claim that one engine is easiest.
Finding placeholder art and sound
You do not need paid assets to choose an engine. GDevelop’s official materials describe an Asset Store with free and premium packs, and GameMaker’s site links to a Marketplace. Treat these as optional sources for placeholder art or sound after you have selected a tool; asset availability does not determine whether an engine’s editor and learning path suit you. Check each asset’s license before redistributing it.
The Bottom Line
Start with a tiny 2D game. Pick Godot for a scripted learning path, GDevelop for visual events and optional JavaScript, or GameMaker for a 2D-focused workflow. Verify the current version, export route and plan terms before you publish.
