There is no proven universally best Rocket League control layout. The best binds are the ones that let you use Jump, Boost, and aerial rotation comfortably and reliably on your chosen input device. Start with an official preset, then change only the controls that feel awkward and test them in Free Play or training.
What are the best binds for Rocket League?
Choose binds by comfort and access, not by a claim that one layout guarantees better performance. Rocket League lets you rebind almost any button under Settings > Controls, so a preset is a starting point rather than a rule. Epic’s Rocket League crash-course support page explains the controls you can customize.
When assessing a layout, ask whether you can use the actions you need together without shifting your grip or making an uncomfortable reach. Your answer depends on your input method, hand comfort, and familiarity. Official materials explain what controls do, but do not establish a layout that improves rank or win rate.
Start with a preset, then adjust
Rocket League’s official patch notes describe Default, Legacy, and Custom presets. Default assigns Air Roll to L2/LT; Legacy retains the controls used since the game’s 2015 launch. These are options with different histories, not an official performance ranking. See the September Update patch notes.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
If you already have a layout you can use consistently, there is no need to replace it just because another player uses different binds. If you are starting fresh, try a preset and change a small number of controls at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether a change actually feels better.
Make frequently used actions comfortable to reach
Think about what each action does before assigning it. Rocket League’s official control guidance notes that holding Jump makes the car jump higher, Air Roll can help it land on its wheels, Boost helps it gain altitude in the air, and Handbrake turns more quickly than normal steering. A comfortable placement can make these actions easier to use when you need them; the best arrangement will depend on your hands and controller or keyboard.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
- Jump: Check that you can press and hold it comfortably, rather than only tapping it.
- Boost and aerial rotation: Consider whether you can access the actions you use together without an awkward hand movement.
- Handbrake: Make sure the assigned control feels natural for the quicker turns it enables.
Controller binds, deadzone, and sensitivity
For controller players, binds are only part of how steering and aerial control feel. Epic’s support guidance says controller deadzone affects the sensitivity of steering and aerial controls. Rocket League’s v1.37 patch notes explain that increasing stick sensitivity multiplies analog-stick input, but reduces fine-tuned control. The cited guidance does not name one ideal deadzone or sensitivity value for every player or device.
Change these settings deliberately: if a control feels too responsive or difficult to fine-tune, adjust one setting and try it before changing others. Bind changes and sensitivity changes solve different problems, so changing both at once can make it harder to identify what helped.

Keyboard and mouse players: check the current defaults
Older keyboard-and-mouse guides may not match the current defaults. Rocket League’s September 18, 2026 Season 24 announcement says the game modernized keyboard-and-mouse bindings and added settings. New users receive the updated bindings by default; existing players were invited to try them. The season was scheduled to begin September 23, 2026.
The associated v2.76 patch notes describe free-look camera mode and an optional center-dot reticule; free look is also available to controller players. Check the controls shown in your own game rather than assuming an older guide’s key assignments still apply.

Test a layout before settling on it
- Open Settings > Controls. Review your current binds and select an available preset if you want a baseline.
- Choose one awkward action to change. Consider whether Jump, Boost, Air Roll, or Handbrake is comfortable to reach during the situations where you use it.
- Try the new bind in Free Play or training. Practice the action repeatedly, including combinations you expect to use together.
- Keep or revert the change. If the new assignment feels less reliable, return to the previous bind and test a different option.
This is a practical way to compare comfort and consistency, not a formal measure of rank or win-rate improvement.
PC input configuration: in-game binds versus Steam
On PC, Steam Controller Configuration is a separate input-mapping layer: Steam handles Rocket League inputs rather than the game itself. If a controller mapping behaves differently than expected, check whether Steam is managing the inputs before troubleshooting in-game binds. Epic explains the distinction in its Steam Controller Configuration support article.
