As of November 2026, the only controller with a clearly documented Android path for this specific use is the 8BitDo Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox. Its manual covers Bluetooth pairing on Android 9.0 or later, while its 2.4 GHz adapter and wired Xbox mode are separate connection methods. That makes it a documented compatibility choice, not proof that every original-Xbox emulator, game, phone or input mapping will work automatically.
Original Xbox emulation on Android is possible through Libretro’s experimental xemu core and through the separate X1 BOX Android fork. You should confirm that your chosen emulator boots on your phone before buying a gamepad, then pair the controller, inspect RetroArch’s Port 1 bindings and test both analog triggers, both sticks and the Xbox White and Black inputs.

The table contains one model because the available documentation does not establish independent, model-by-model Android original-Xbox testing for a larger ranking. A longer list would imply latency, compatibility or game coverage that has not been demonstrated.
Can you use a Bluetooth controller for original Xbox emulation on Android?
Yes, but the answer depends on the emulator release. Libretro documents an experimental Android build of its xemu core, rendered with Vulkan. X1 BOX is a separate Android fork that advertises physical USB and Bluetooth controller support. Upstream xemu’s standalone project still says, “There are currently no plans for a mobile port of xemu on Android or iOS, but possibly in the future,” in its FAQ. These statements describe different releases rather than a contradiction.

Bluetooth pairing only establishes a wireless link. It does not prove that a particular game starts at playable speed, that the emulator recognizes every button, or that analog triggers report their full range. Treat the controller recommendation and the emulator recommendation as two separate compatibility checks.
Which Bluetooth controller is documented for this use?
8BitDo Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox
The manufacturer’s manual identifies Android 9.0 or later as a supported mobile target. To use it with Android, switch the controller to Bluetooth mode, press its pairing button, open Android’s Bluetooth settings and select the controller when it appears. The product sheet distinguishes Bluetooth for mobile from 2.4 GHz wireless for PC and wired operation with Xbox.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →That distinction matters. The supplied 2.4 GHz adapter is not the Android Bluetooth connection described in the manual, and the dock is not required for the Android pairing claim. Do not select the controller’s PC 2.4 GHz path when your phone is expecting Bluetooth, and do not assume that a wired Xbox mode will be exposed to an Android device through an arbitrary cable or adapter.
This is a documented compatibility pick rather than a hands-on-tested overall winner. The available evidence does not establish a measured latency advantage, current battery-life figure, Hall-effect stick specification, phone-clip fit or emulator-specific certification for this model. Those details should not be inferred from its three connection modes.
Why is there only one pick instead of a ranked list?
A credible comparison needs the exact model, a documented Android Bluetooth path and evidence about the controls that original Xbox games use. The available documentation provides that combination for the Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox, but not independent comparative measurements for several competing pads.
Ranking other controllers as “faster,” “more reliable” or “best for xemu” would require latency measurements or repeatable Android emulator tests that are not established here. The practical selection criteria are therefore:
- Android Bluetooth support for the exact SKU, not a similarly named controller.
- Correct recognition of both analog sticks, both analog triggers and the original Xbox White and Black buttons.
- A physical layout that suits your phone, case and any mounting arrangement you already own.
- Compatibility with the particular Android version and emulator build you intend to use.
- Purchase value after accounting for which connection accessories you actually need.
There is no documented basis for declaring a lowest-latency controller or for claiming that several models are verified winners across every Android phone and game.

What must your Android device and emulator support?
Check the emulator first. The Libretro xemu core requires a 64-bit CPU and uses Vulkan on Android. Its documentation also requires a boot ROM, BIOS and hard-disk image supplied separately. These firmware files are not included with the core; the documentation says the Microsoft boot ROM and BIOS should be dumped from your own console.
Libretro xemu requirements
- Android build of the Libretro xemu core, described by Libretro as experimental.
- 64-bit CPU.
- Vulkan-capable Android graphics stack.
- Your own dumped Microsoft boot ROM and BIOS.
- An emulated hard-disk image, supplied separately.
Do not download console firmware from an unauthorized source simply to satisfy a setup guide. Keep the firmware and hard-disk files in the locations required by the core documentation, and verify that RetroArch can see them before troubleshooting the controller.
X1 BOX fork requirements
The X1 BOX repository publishes a different set of requirements: ARM64, Vulkan, Android 8.0 or later and a recommendation of 8 GB RAM or more. Those are fork-published requirements and recommendations, not independent performance measurements. A phone that meets them may still vary by game, driver and emulator build.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How do you pair the controller with Android?
Pairing is a short Android procedure, but use the controller’s Bluetooth mode rather than its other connection modes.
- Confirm that the phone runs Android 9.0 or later for the controller’s documented mobile support.
- Switch the Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox to its Bluetooth setting.
- Press the controller’s pairing button as described in the manufacturer manual.
- On the phone, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device (the exact wording can vary by Android skin).
- Select the controller when it appears, then wait for Android to show it as connected.
- Open the emulator only after Android reports the Bluetooth connection, so the emulator can discover the newly available input device.
Android showing a successful pairing does not guarantee that RetroArch has assigned the expected profile. Continue with the emulator-side mapping checks instead of launching a long game session immediately.
How do you configure the gamepad in RetroArch?
RetroArch provides both automatic controller profiles and manual binding. Its controller-autoconfiguration guide explains the workflow; the important check for original Xbox emulation is that every control is assigned to the correct RetroPad input.
- Launch RetroArch with the Bluetooth controller already connected.
- Open Settings > Input > Port 1 Controls.
- Confirm that the controller is selected for Port 1 and that the expected device name appears.
- Check the left stick and right stick independently, including diagonal movement.
- Press each analog trigger through its range. A trigger that only registers as a digital button is not fully configured for games that use analog pressure.
- Check the face buttons and the original Xbox White and Black equivalents. The xemu core exposes those inputs through its RetroPad mapping, so they should not be left unassigned.
- If any input is wrong or blank, use the manual-bind controls in Port 1 Controls, save the configuration and reopen the core.
Do not copy desktop xemu’s SDL gamepad instructions into RetroArch on Android. Desktop SDL mappings and Libretro’s RetroPad bindings are separate paths.

Where do the original Xbox White and Black buttons go?
Libretro’s xemu core documents mappings for the original Xbox White and Black buttons. They are distinct inputs, not interchangeable labels for the regular face buttons. Open Port 1 Controls and press each physical button while watching the corresponding RetroPad field; remap manually if the automatic profile leaves either one empty or assigns it to the wrong input.
This check is especially important for games that use White or Black as a dedicated action. A controller can appear to work in a menu while still missing one of those less commonly used inputs.
What game files and save data does the Libretro core use?
The core loads XISO-format original Xbox game images. If you have a plain redump ISO, it must be converted to XISO before the core can use it. Follow the core’s documented file requirements rather than renaming an ISO and assuming that the format has changed.
Game saves live inside the emulated hard-disk image. RetroArch save states are unsupported for this core, so use each game’s own save system and keep backups of the hard-disk image. A controller problem and a save problem can look similar when a game returns to its title screen; verify that the hard-disk image is present before changing button mappings.
What should you do when the controller pairs but does not work?
Android says connected, but RetroArch shows no input
Close and reopen RetroArch after pairing, then inspect Settings > Input > Port 1 Controls. If the device is listed but no buttons respond, assign the controls manually. Check that the controller is in Bluetooth mode rather than 2.4 GHz mode and that another previously paired gamepad has not been assigned to Port 1.
Buttons work, but a trigger or stick is wrong
Run through the analog checks again. The two triggers should report analog movement, and each stick should move on both axes. A profile that maps a trigger as a simple button can pass a menu test but fail a game that expects gradual acceleration, braking or pressure.
White or Black input is missing
Return to Port 1 Controls and inspect the dedicated White and Black fields. Bind each to the physical button you intend to use, save the profile and restart the core if the game does not see the new assignment.

The core does not boot or a game image is rejected
Confirm the 64-bit and Vulkan requirements, then verify the boot ROM, BIOS and hard-disk image paths. Check that the game image is XISO rather than an unconverted plain ISO. Firmware must come from your own console dump; a controller change cannot correct a missing or invalid firmware file.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does X1 BOX differ from the Libretro core?
X1 BOX is a separate Android fork, not another name for the Libretro core. Its repository advertises ARM64, Vulkan, Android 8.0 or later and physical USB/Bluetooth controller support, with 8 GB RAM or more recommended. Because those figures come from the fork itself, they describe its published target rather than an independently measured performance threshold.
The controller workflow can therefore differ between X1 BOX and RetroArch. A Bluetooth pad that is paired in Android may require a different in-app binding process, and a mapping that works in one build should not be assumed to transfer to the other. Check the fork’s current instructions before changing emulator versions.
Is the standalone xemu Android app available?
Upstream xemu’s FAQ says there are currently no plans for a standalone Android or iOS port. That statement does not rule out the separately documented Libretro Android core or an Android fork such as X1 BOX; it only describes the upstream standalone project.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When a download page says “xemu for Android,” identify which release it means. Confirm the publisher, required firmware locations, graphics API and controller-mapping instructions before installing it, because the same gamepad can be exposed differently by separate front ends.
What should you check about phone mounting and connection accessories?
The documented Android claim covers Bluetooth communication, not the physical way you will hold a phone. The available specifications do not establish a phone-clip fit, case clearance, battery-life figure or a requirement for the bundled dock. If you need a mounted setup, measure your phone and case against the controller accessory you intend to use rather than assuming compatibility from the controller name.

Likewise, the 2.4 GHz adapter is relevant to the controller’s PC connection and the wired Xbox mode is a separate path. Neither is needed to make the manufacturer’s Android Bluetooth claim, so buying an adapter does not add a documented Android-emulation benefit.
How we picked
The shortlist uses only exact-model documentation for Android Bluetooth support, the controller inputs needed by original Xbox games, and a connection path that matches Android phones. It excludes unsupported latency rankings, battery claims, phone-clip assumptions and emulator certification. Because only one exact model meets the documented standard in the available material, the list stops at one rather than inventing a multi-controller order.
Recheck the Libretro xemu documentation and the X1 BOX repository before installing: the Libretro page is dated October 22, 2026 and describes an experimental release that can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the controller’s 2.4 GHz dongle with an Android phone?
The manufacturer documentation assigns 2.4 GHz to the PC connection and identifies Bluetooth as the mobile connection. Android compatibility should therefore be evaluated through the controller’s Bluetooth mode, not by assuming that the bundled dongle will work with a phone.
Does a paired controller guarantee that every original Xbox game will recognize it?
No. Pairing is handled by Android, while button and axis assignment is handled by the emulator. A game can still miss an input until Port 1 bindings are corrected, particularly for analog triggers or the White and Black buttons.
Can I move my game saves between Android phones?
The core stores game saves inside its emulated hard-disk image. Moving that image, with the required firmware paths recreated on the new device, is the relevant transfer operation; RetroArch save states are not supported by this core.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy do Android emulator pages disagree about whether xemu exists on mobile?
They may be referring to different projects. Upstream xemu discusses its standalone port plans, while Libretro documents an experimental Android core and X1 BOX publishes a separate Android fork.
