Use the shoulder trigger for the Arcana Whip grapple: R2 on PS5, RT on Xbox, and ZR on Switch. That placement keeps movement and aiming on the left stick while letting you latch onto anchors or enemies, swing through the level, and chain into an attack. Keep dodge/slide on Circle (PS5) or B (Xbox/Switch), and keep spell and heal on separate inputs. The ordinary weapon-attack button has not been officially published in the available documentation, so follow the on-screen prompt rather than assuming Square, X, or A.
Quick reference: the documented console layout
| Action | PS5 | Xbox | Switch | Evidence and confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dodge / slide | Circle | B | B | Circle is documented by the PS5 hands-on report; Xbox and Switch equivalents come from a current guide. |
| Arcana Whip grapple | R2 | RT | ZR | R2 is documented by the PS5 hands-on report; RT and ZR are reported equivalents in the guide. |
| Spell | Triangle | Y | X | Documented platform equivalents. |
| Heal | L1 | LB | L | Documented platform equivalents. |
| Ordinary weapon attack | Not officially published | Not officially published | Not officially published | Do not assign an exact button without the game’s prompt or an updated manual. |
The most important distinction is between the grapple and the regular attack. The grapple is the clearly documented whip input. It is not simply a replacement for a conventional attack: it can attach to an enemy or anchor, pull Rose into the action, and then lead into an immediate strike or a traversal swing. The follow-up attack input is not confirmed by the sources available for this guide.

Why R2, RT, and ZR are the best starting points
A shoulder trigger gives the grapple its own control channel without taking either thumb off the movement and camera sticks. That matters when an enemy is airborne, when an anchor is above Rose, or when a grapple must be followed by a dodge. The first-party description specifically places the Arcana Whip grapple on R2 and describes it as both a combat and traversal action.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Trigger placement also makes the action easy to reach while your left thumb continues to steer. This is a practical layout recommendation, not a claim that the developer has declared one setting competitively superior. If the full travel of a trigger causes discomfort or makes your timing inconsistent, remapping to a shorter-travel shoulder control or a supported rear paddle is reasonable.

Do not move dodge merely to make the grapple easier to reach. Circle on PS5 and B on Xbox or Switch support the documented double-tap backflip, so keeping dodge on a familiar face button preserves an escape option during an approach. Spells and healing should remain separate as well: Triangle/Y/X and L1/LB/L are distinct in the documented layouts, which avoids confusing an offensive resource action with recovery.
Platform-by-platform setup
PS5: R2 grapple, Circle dodge, Triangle spell, L1 heal
Start with the documented PS5 arrangement:
- R2: Arcana Whip grapple.
- Circle: dodge or slide; double-tap it for the backward flip described in the PlayStation Blog hands-on report.
- Triangle: spell.
- L1: heal.
With this layout, your left stick remains available for movement and aim while your right hand controls the grapple and the face-button dodge. Use a light, deliberate R2 press as the target is selected rather than holding the trigger through the entire encounter. Once the grapple connects, watch for the game’s follow-up cue or the behavior of your equipped weapon before pressing the ordinary attack input.
The PlayStation Blog report, dated July 17, 2026, describes the grapple as chainable into an instant attack or a traversal swing. That wording does not identify a universal attack button, so a PS5 player should not treat Square as confirmed. Some control guides infer Square from a standard layout, but that inference is explicitly unverified.

Xbox: RT grapple, B dodge, Y spell, LB heal
The reported Xbox equivalents are:
- RT: Arcana Whip grapple.
- B: dodge or slide, including the double-tap backflip behavior.
- Y: spell.
- LB: heal.
RT gives the same trigger-based separation as R2. Keep your left thumb on the stick during the pull so you can correct your position or prepare for a landing. B is close enough to reach with the right thumb during an approach, but avoid moving it to a shoulder control unless trigger travel is genuinely preventing reliable dodges; changing both grapple and dodge at once can make the timing harder to learn.

Because the Xbox mapping is reported as an equivalent rather than a first-party button chart, check the in-game prompt after installation and after major updates. The prompt takes precedence over any static guide.
Switch: ZR grapple, B dodge, X spell, L heal
The reported Switch arrangement is:
- ZR: Arcana Whip grapple.
- B: dodge or slide.
- X: spell.
- L: heal.
ZR is the natural starting point when playing with Joy-Con or a Pro Controller because it leaves the left stick free for steering. On Joy-Con, pay attention to how far you must depress the trigger and whether your grip makes repeated pulls uncomfortable. A supported remap to a shorter-travel shoulder input or rear control can reduce strain, but it is an accessibility choice rather than a required performance tweak.
Keep B available for the double-tap backflip. Since the Switch face-button arrangement is rotated relative to the Xbox labels, use the action name shown in the controls menu instead of relying on the letter alone when checking your setup.
How the whip grapple becomes an attack
The grapple has two jobs. It can latch onto an anchor for movement, or it can latch onto an enemy and bring Rose into a combat sequence. The first-party hands-on report says it can be chained into an instant attack. GamesRadar’s description of grappling aerial enemies and then falling to smash enemies below illustrates the broader design: the whip is a positioning tool that creates attack opportunities, not a conventional stand-alone primary weapon.

- Select the target. Face the enemy or anchor and make sure the grapple reticle or prompt indicates a valid connection.
- Press the shoulder trigger once. Use R2, RT, or ZR with a short, deliberate press. Avoid repeatedly mashing while the game is deciding whether the target is in range.
- Confirm the connection. Look for the pull, swing, or other on-screen response. If Rose does not move, reassess distance, angle, and target availability before pressing again.
- Read the follow-up cue. The ordinary weapon attack is not identified in the documented sources. Press the button the game displays, or use the weapon’s clearly signaled follow-up behavior, rather than assuming a platform-standard face button.
- Recover your position. After the strike or swing, keep Circle/B available for a dodge. An aerial pull can leave Rose above or beside the enemy, while an anchor swing can place her over a gap or near another threat.
PC Gamer observed that the whip-pull attack timing can feel set too early. That is a reviewer’s timing impression, not a measured input-lag result, but it explains why a player may see a missed follow-up even when the grapple connected. Treat the rhythm as grapple, brief read of the cue, then attack—not grapple plus frantic button mashing.
Recommended layouts for different players
| Player need | Recommended arrangement | Why it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most players starting the game | Keep R2/RT/ZR for grapple; retain the documented dodge, spell, and heal buttons. | Matches the published console placement and preserves left-stick movement. | Long trigger travel may feel slow to players who prefer mouse-like clicks. |
| Trigger-sensitive hands or missed early follow-ups | Move grapple to a shorter-travel shoulder input or a controller rear paddle, if supported. | Reduces the physical travel needed for repeated grapple attempts. | You must build new muscle memory, and the game may not expose every action as remappable. |
| Players who dodge under pressure | Leave Circle/B on the face button and do not place grapple on the same input. | Keeps the double-tap backflip reachable during an enemy approach. | Fewer face-button options remain for any unconfirmed ordinary attack input. |
| Players managing resources | Keep spell and heal on separate documented inputs. | Prevents a recovery action from being confused with a spell during combat. | Requires remembering four distinct action locations. |
| Accessibility-focused setup | Use the game’s basic remapping support and choose the shortest comfortable route to grapple, dodge, and follow-up attack. | Lets hand size, range of motion, and fatigue determine the layout. | Custom layouts can differ from tutorials and on-screen button lettering. |
These are ergonomic recommendations based on the documented action roles. They are not developer-prescribed competitive settings, and there is no authoritative numeric test showing that one remap produces lower input latency.
Remapping the grapple without losing the combat flow
The available guide reports basic remapping support. The exact menu labels can change with platform and patch, so use the game’s controls or accessibility menu and look for the action named Arcana Whip grapple rather than searching only for “whip attack.”
- Open the game’s Controls or Accessibility section from the title screen or pause menu.
- Highlight Arcana Whip grapple and assign a shorter-travel shoulder control or a supported rear paddle.
- Confirm that Dodge/slide still has a separate button and that a double press remains physically comfortable.
- Check that Spell and Heal remain distinct. Their documented defaults are Triangle/L1 on PS5, Y/LB on Xbox, and X/L on Switch.
- Enter a low-risk area and test a grapple on an anchor, then on an enemy. Test the follow-up prompt before taking the new layout into a difficult encounter.
If the game only offers global button remapping, changing a face button may affect menus or other actions as well. In that case, write down the new assignment and verify every prompt before playing on autopilot. If a patch restores defaults, the on-screen control display is the authoritative check.

Timing drills for reliable whip attacks
Drill 1: stationary anchors
Begin with anchors rather than enemies. Press the trigger once, observe how quickly the swing starts, and release or redirect only after you understand the movement. This isolates trigger travel and connection range from combat pressure.
Drill 2: airborne targets
Practice on an enemy that is already above the ground. Grapple as the target is selected, then wait for the game prompt before attempting the ordinary attack. Airborne targets are useful because they make the pull’s position change obvious and reinforce the grapple-to-attack rhythm highlighted by the combat coverage.
Drill 3: grapple, strike, dodge
Once the first two steps are comfortable, perform one complete sequence: shoulder-trigger grapple, prompted attack, then Circle/B dodge. Do not add a spell or heal until the basic sequence is consistent. This preserves the dodge as an emergency exit instead of spending attention on four inputs at once.

Drill 4: falling smash setup
Use a grapple to gain height, then look for an opportunity to fall onto an enemy below. GamesRadar described this aerial-to-ground pattern as a satisfying use of the whip. Treat it as a positioning exercise first; the goal is to land where intended, not to repeat the attack button faster.

Troubleshooting missed grapples and attacks
The trigger does nothing
- Confirm that the action is assigned to R2, RT, or ZR, or to your chosen remapped control.
- Check whether the target is a valid enemy or anchor and whether you are within connection range.
- Look for the in-game prompt. A generic weapon-attack assumption cannot substitute for the prompt because the ordinary attack mapping is not officially documented.
- Test the control in a safe area to distinguish a layout problem from a target or positioning problem.
The grapple connects but the attack misses
- Use one short trigger press and wait for the connection response.
- Press the follow-up only when the prompt or weapon behavior indicates it; PC Gamer’s review notes that the timing can feel early.
- Practice on airborne enemies, where the pull and follow-up are easier to observe.
- If your finger is still late because of trigger travel, try a shorter-travel remap rather than increasing the number of presses.
You dodge instead of grappling
- Separate the two actions again. Grapple belongs on R2/RT/ZR in the documented defaults; dodge belongs on Circle/B.
- Check whether a global remap changed the face-button labels shown by tutorials or prompts.
- Use the double-tap backflip deliberately rather than tapping repeatedly while approaching a target.
You cast or heal by mistake
- Keep spell and heal on separate buttons: Triangle and L1 on PS5, Y and LB on Xbox, X and L on Switch.
- Review the control display after any remap or patch.
- Practice the grapple sequence without resource actions until the trigger and dodge motions are automatic.
What is confirmed, and what remains unknown
The strongest evidence is the PS5 hands-on report from PlayStation Blog, published July 17, 2026. It explicitly places dodge/slide on Circle and the Arcana Whip grapple on R2, and says the grapple can chain into an instant attack or traversal swing. A current guide supplies the reported Xbox and Switch equivalents and notes basic remapping support.
The regular weapon-attack button is the significant gap. A guide’s suggestion that Square might be the standard-layout input is marked unverified; it should not be presented as a fact, and no equivalent X or A mapping should be invented for other platforms. Use the game’s live prompt and recheck the controls after patches or platform-specific updates.
The timing observation from PC Gamer—that the whip-pull attack can feel early—is a review impression, not a laboratory measurement. GamesRadar’s aerial-grapple and falling-smash description supports the whip’s dual combat/traversal role but does not establish a new button mapping. Those distinctions matter when choosing a layout: use documented bindings as your baseline, then let comfort and accessibility determine whether a remap helps.
