The standard Xbox Wireless Controller is the safest choice for most ASUS ROG Ally owners. It uses the Xbox-style input that Windows PC games commonly recognize directly, works well with Steam and the Xbox app, and avoids many button-prompt and remapping surprises.

There is no controller that is literally “100% compatible” with every PC game, launcher, Windows function, Armoury Crate feature, and connection mode. This guide instead focuses on controllers with broad Windows compatibility, dependable PC-game support, and sensible options for handheld, docked, multiplayer, and competitive play.

For the most features, choose the ASUS ROG Raikiri II Xbox Wireless Controller. For premium Xbox customization, consider the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. Prices below are U.S. observations from August 16–18, 2026 and can change.

What “compatible” means on a ROG Ally

The ROG Ally family runs Windows, so compatibility has several separate layers:

#1 Best Overall

ASUS ROG Raikiri Pro OLED display, tri-mode connectivity, remappable buttons&triggers, 4 rear buttons, step&linear triggers, adjustable joystick sensitivity, 3.5mm jack with ESS DAC, for PC and Xbox
  • Built-in OLED display: Create a unique look with customizable animations, view status indicators, and switch profiles on the fly
  • Tri-mode connectivity: Versatile flexibility with wired USB-C, low-latency 2.4 GHz RF, plus a Bluetooth mode
  • Intuitive rear controls: Four left and right buttons can be programmed for in-game commands or for on-the-fly joystick sensitivity shifts
  • Selectable step triggers: Left and right triggers can be set to short- or full-range modes, with dead zones customizable in Armoury Crate
  • Premium sound: Built-in ESS DAC for immersive audio; plus 3.5 mm earphone jack, and a mute button
  1. Windows connection: The controller can connect through USB, Bluetooth, or a 2.4GHz receiver.
  2. Game recognition: The game detects the controller and maps its buttons. Native XInput support is usually the least troublesome route.
  3. Docked operation: The connection remains reliable when the Ally is connected to a TV and sitting several feet away.
  4. Handheld-software integration: Armoury Crate SE, Xbox Game Bar, Xbox fullscreen navigation, external-controller detection, profiles, and built-in-controller controls behave as expected.

A controller can pass the first two tests and still lack a particular Armoury Crate profile, remapping option, or Xbox Ally interface feature. Treat ordinary PC-game compatibility and ASUS software integration as different questions.

This guide covers the Windows-based ROG Ally (2023, RC71), ROG Ally X (2024, RC72), ROG Xbox Ally (2025, RC73YA), and ROG Xbox Ally X (2025, RC73XA). Connection behavior and available Armoury Crate SE or Xbox software options can vary with Windows, handheld firmware, Armoury Crate SE, the Xbox app, and controller firmware versions. ASUS lists these model families in its Armoury Crate SE documentation.

Why XInput is the safest default

Most modern Windows PC games were designed with Xbox-style controllers in mind. A controller that presents as XInput is more likely to work without a compatibility layer, show familiar Xbox button prompts, and behave predictably in Steam, PC Game Pass, and the Xbox app.

This does not make every non-Xbox controller a bad choice. It means that a technically advanced controller using DirectInput, a PlayStation layout, or a manufacturer-specific mode may need Steam Input, bundled software, or in-game remapping. If the goal is simply to connect a controller and play, Xbox/XInput is the lower-risk path.

1. Best overall: Xbox Wireless Controller

Best for: Most ROG Ally owners, families, multiplayer, Steam, Game Pass, and straightforward docked play.

The standard Xbox Wireless Controller is the safest general recommendation because it belongs to the same input ecosystem that Windows PC games commonly target. It is not the most configurable controller, but it minimizes the number of compatibility decisions a buyer has to make.

Microsoft’s U.S. accessory listing showed standard Robot White and Carbon Black models at $64.99, with some other colors at $69.99, as observed August 16–18, 2026. Confirm the current color and package before buying.

Strengths

  • Familiar Xbox layout and strong XInput fit for Windows games.
  • Good match for Steam, the Xbox app, and PC Game Pass.
  • Simple choice for local multiplayer.
  • Lower cost than premium controllers.

Limitations

  • No rear buttons or advanced remapping hardware.
  • Standard analog sticks rather than TMR or Hall-effect enthusiast hardware.
  • Battery and charging arrangements depend on the exact package and accessories.
  • Do not assume the controller includes Microsoft’s separate Xbox Wireless Adapter for PC. Bluetooth, USB, and Xbox-console wireless are not interchangeable terms.

Choose this controller unless you specifically need rear buttons, adjustable triggers, a charging stand, or enthusiast stick hardware.

8Bitdo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller for PC, Apple, Steam&Android, WUCHANG
  • Official collaboration with WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers. Compatible with Windows PC, Apple, Steam, and Android devices – 2.4G and wired connection for Windows, and Bluetooth for SteamOS, Apple and Android.
  • TMR Joysticks - Delivers higher sensitivity, precision, and durability, featuring an RGB Fire Ring and wear-resistant joystick rings.
  • Integrated charging dock keeps your controller always charged and ready, with auto-reconnection. Features customizable 6-Axis motion control, turbo, and rumble. Supports 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2.
  • Trigger mode switch - Easily switch between linear Hall Effect triggers and non-linear tactile triggers for optimal control across different gaming scenarios.
  • 1000Hz polling rate (for 2.4G and wired connection) & 8Speed Wireless Technology. The exclusive "8Speed" wireless tech ensures ultra-low latency (<1ms), strong anti-interference, and virtually lag-free performance up to 10m.

2. Best premium and ASUS-integrated option: ROG Raikiri II Xbox Wireless

Best for: Competitive games, docked play, accessibility, rear-button users, and ASUS/ROG enthusiasts.

The ROG Raikiri II Xbox Wireless Controller is the most feature-rich verified option here. ASUS lists PC and ROG Ally support through USB-C, Bluetooth, and 2.4GHz wireless. It also includes four rear buttons, TMR thumbsticks, dual-mode triggers, a wireless dongle, cable, charging stand, case, and alternate thumbstick caps.

ASUS lists a 1,000Hz polling rate in PC mode and up to 50 hours of battery life. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent latency or battery-test results. A higher polling rate is also not the same as guaranteed lower end-to-end latency in every game or wireless environment.

U.S. ASUS pages showed different configurations or price signals of $149.99 and $189.99. Treat that range as date- and configuration-sensitive rather than a permanent price. Check the exact package before ordering.

Why it is compelling

  • Three connection modes provide useful fallbacks.
  • Rear buttons can move frequently used actions away from the face buttons or sticks.
  • TMR sticks are intended to reduce conventional potentiometer wear; they are not a guarantee against every form of drift or failure.
  • Dual-mode triggers suit both racing games and shooters.
  • The included 2.4GHz receiver is useful when Bluetooth is inconsistent across a room.
  • The ASUS branding and explicit ROG Ally support reduce uncertainty about basic device compatibility.

Reasons to skip it

  • It costs substantially more than the standard Xbox controller.
  • At 345 g including the cable, it is a substantial controller.
  • ASUS specifies that Bluetooth requires a driver.
  • Casual players may never use the rear buttons, profiles, stand, case, or advanced stick hardware.
  • ASUS’s performance figures should not be presented as independent testing.

Buy the Raikiri II when its extra controls and connection options solve a real need. Do not pay the premium merely because it has more specifications.

3. Best premium Xbox alternative: Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2

Best for: Players who want Xbox-native behavior and premium customization.

The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 is a logical premium alternative for people already invested in the Xbox ecosystem. Microsoft’s listing showed the Elite Series 2 Core at $149.99 for the white model and $139.99 for red and blue models, while the full Elite Series 2 was listed at $199.99.

Do not treat the Core and full packages as identical. The Core edition is a lower-entry-price option, while the complete package includes additional equipment. Check the live listing for the exact included components.

Strengths

  • Premium Xbox-oriented design and customization.
  • Good fit for players who already understand and value the Elite lineup.
  • More appropriate than a basic controller when adjustable controls are central to the purchase.

Limitations

  • Expensive for ordinary docked play.
  • The Core package may not contain the accessories buyers expect from the full edition.
  • There is no basis here to claim superior reliability or stick longevity without independent testing.

What about budget third-party controllers?

A third-party controller can be an excellent value, but no current budget winner is named here because the relevant product, price, firmware policy, and official listing were not verified together. Choose by specification rather than reputation alone.

Before buying, confirm that the controller:

  • Supports Windows 11 and has a clearly documented XInput mode.
  • Offers USB-C wired play or a documented Bluetooth/2.4GHz mode.
  • Includes the required receiver, or clearly states whether it is sold separately.
  • Uses a receiver that fits your dock or adapter: USB-A and USB-C are not interchangeable without the right hardware.
  • Explains whether rear buttons are remappable through hardware, manufacturer software, Steam Input, or only within certain games.
  • Does not promise universal Armoury Crate or Xbox fullscreen integration without specifying the exact feature.

A cheap XInput controller may work perfectly in games while offering no Armoury Crate profiles, RGB controls, or built-in-controller management. That is not necessarily a defect; it is a different compatibility level.

Is a PS5 DualSense or DualSense Edge suitable?

A DualSense or DualSense Edge can be a reasonable choice if you already own one or prefer its shape. It is not the safest default for a Windows ROG Ally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • PC support varies by game and software path.
  • Some games require Steam Input or another compatibility layer for reliable Xbox-style behavior.
  • Button prompts may show Xbox labels even though the physical controller uses PlayStation symbols.
  • Adaptive triggers and advanced haptics are not universal on Windows.

Choose it when its ergonomics or existing ownership matter more than plug-and-play XInput behavior. Do not buy it expecting every PlayStation feature to carry over to every PC game.

Wired vs Bluetooth vs 2.4GHz

Connection Advantages Trade-offs Best use
USB wired Simple setup, no pairing, no wireless interference, dependable fallback Requires a suitable cable, dock, or hub; adds cable clutter Competitive play and troubleshooting
Bluetooth No receiver occupying a port; convenient for handheld use Pairing and reconnect behavior vary; interference and perceived latency may be more noticeable when docked; advanced features may be unavailable Casual play near the Ally
2.4GHz receiver Often more consistent than Bluetooth for TV play; usually low-latency in normal conditions Uses a USB port and may require a dock or adapter Docked play across a room

The original ROG Ally has one USB-C port. The ROG Ally X and newer Xbox Ally models have expanded USB-C connectivity, but layouts differ by model. Check the official product information for your exact handheld before selecting a dock or adapter.

For a TV setup, favor a wired connection through the dock or a 2.4GHz receiver when available. Bluetooth is convenient and often works well, but “Bluetooth works” does not mean it is the best option at every distance or in every crowded wireless environment.

How to connect a controller

Bluetooth setup

  1. Open Settings in Windows.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on.
  3. Put the controller into its PC pairing mode.
  4. Select the controller when it appears.
  5. Test both sticks, triggers, bumpers, face buttons, and the D-pad in a game or gamepad tester.

If the game shows PlayStation prompts or does not detect input, check the game’s controller settings and Steam Input. If the controller supports it, switching to wired or native XInput mode can remove an unnecessary compatibility layer.

ROG Raikiri II over Bluetooth

ASUS’s instructions specify the following sequence:

Rank #4
GameSir G7 SE Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & Windows 10/11, Plug and Play Gaming Gamepad with Hall Effect Joysticks/Hall Trigger, 3.5mm Audio Jack (White)
  • Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
  • Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
  • Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
  • Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
  • Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
  1. Set the platform switch to PC.
  2. Set the connection switch to Bluetooth.
  3. Press the Xbox button.
  4. Hold the pairing button for more than three seconds, until the ROG logo flashes blue.
  5. In Windows, select Add a device and choose ROG RAIKIRI II.

See ASUS’s Raikiri II connection instructions if the current firmware or utility presents different prompts.

ROG Raikiri II over 2.4GHz

  1. Remove the bundled USB dongle from the controller.
  2. Insert it into an available USB Type-A port on the Ally dock, PC, or charging dock.
  3. Set the platform switch to PC.
  4. Set the connection switch to 2.4GHz.
  5. Press the Xbox button.

A USB-C-only setup may need a dock or USB-C-to-USB-A adapter. Do not assume that an Xbox-branded controller includes Microsoft’s separate Xbox Wireless Adapter.

Fixing duplicate or conflicting input

If a game moves on its own, registers two actions, or appears to see two controllers, the external controller may not be defective. The Ally’s built-in controls can remain active alongside the external device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disconnect every other gamepad and unnecessary input device.
  2. Pair or connect only one controller mode: wired, Bluetooth, or 2.4GHz.
  3. Close and restart the game after connecting the external controller.
  4. Check Armoury Crate SE for the available external-controller or built-in-controller disable controls.
  5. Update Windows, Armoury Crate SE, controller firmware, and any required controller utility.
  6. If Windows sees the controller but the game does not, test the game’s native controller option or Steam Input.
  7. Change one input layer at a time. Steam Input plus manufacturer remapping plus in-game remapping can create duplicate bindings.

Armoury Crate SE includes Gamepad Mode, Desktop Mode, and external-controller-related controls, but labels and available options can vary by model and software release. ASUS documents the current feature areas in its Armoury Crate SE guide.

Game compatibility is not desktop compatibility

A controller that works in a game is not automatically a mouse-and-keyboard replacement. Windows desktop navigation, browser use, text entry, launchers, Armoury Crate, and Game Bar may still be easier with a mouse, keyboard, touch screen, or a dedicated cursor-mapping feature.

Microsoft’s 2026 Xbox Ally software updates added a Gamepad Cursor for navigating interfaces that do not otherwise support controller input, including browsers, music applications, and third-party PC storefronts. That is part of the newer Xbox Ally software experience; it should not automatically be attributed to the 2023 ROG Ally or treated as a universal feature of every controller. See the Xbox update announcement for the current Xbox Ally context.

Original ROG Ally vs newer Xbox Ally models

The original Ally, Ally X, ROG Xbox Ally, and ROG Xbox Ally X all run Windows-based software, but their ports, firmware, Armoury Crate context, and Xbox-oriented interface features are not identical. A controller that connects over USB, Bluetooth, or 2.4GHz may work on all four, while a specific dock, built-in-controller setting, or fullscreen navigation feature may not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the least uncertainty, match the controller’s documented Windows support to your exact handheld and verify the current software version. Do not infer every Xbox Ally interface feature from ordinary PC-game compatibility.

Buying checklist

  • Choose native XInput when minimizing setup is the priority.
  • For TV play, prefer wired or 2.4GHz over Bluetooth when practical.
  • Check whether your dock has the correct USB-A or USB-C port for the receiver.
  • Confirm the controller’s weight and shape for long sessions.
  • Pay for rear buttons, adjustable triggers, TMR/Hall-effect sticks, a case, or a charging stand only if you will use them.
  • Check the exact package: Elite Core and full Elite packages are materially different.
  • Verify controller firmware and Armoury Crate support before relying on profiles, remapping, RGB, or built-in-controller disable features.
  • Remember that polling rate is not the same as end-to-end latency.
  • Never treat “drift-proof,” “no input lag,” or “works with every game” as a reliable universal promise.

Final recommendation

Buy the Xbox Wireless Controller if you want the fewest compatibility surprises. Buy the ROG Raikiri II Xbox Wireless if you will use its rear buttons, TMR sticks, trigger modes, 2.4GHz receiver, or included charging accessories. Choose the Xbox Elite Series 2 when premium Xbox customization matters more than price.

For maximum compatibility, prioritize native Windows/XInput support. For docked play, prioritize wired or 2.4GHz connectivity. For Armoury Crate and Xbox fullscreen features, verify the exact controller model and current software version rather than assuming that “works on PC” means every handheld feature is available.
