The best crossbow enchantments depend on what you want the shot to do: choose Multishot to spread three projectiles across an area, or Piercing to send an arrow through a line of targets. They are mutually exclusive. Add Quick Charge to reload faster, and consider Unbreaking or Mending to help preserve the weapon.
Which crossbow enchantments should you choose?
There is no single best setup for every fight. Multishot favors targets spread across an angle; Piercing favors targets lined up behind one another. Quick Charge supports either approach by reducing loading time. Mending and Unbreaking address durability rather than changing the shot.

| Enchantment | What it does | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Multishot | Fires three projectiles in one shot, fanned out ahead and to the sides. | Targets spread across a wider angle. |
| Piercing | Lets an arrow pass through entities; the Java article says one arrow can damage a number of mobs equal to the enchantment level plus one. | Targets in a line. |
| Quick Charge | Reduces crossbow loading time. | Players who want to fire again sooner. |
| Unbreaking | Reduces durability damage. | Keeping the crossbow usable for longer. |
| Mending | Repairs the item using experience. | Repairing the crossbow through experience. |
| Curse of Vanishing | Makes the item disappear on death. | Not a combat upgrade; consider its item-loss consequence. |
The table combines Bedrock creator documentation with mechanics described in Minecraft’s Java update article, so the exact numeric details below are identified by edition and source.
Multishot or Piercing: choose one
Minecraft’s official Java Village & Pillage article says Multishot and Piercing cannot be combined. Your choice is therefore about target layout, not stacking both effects on the same crossbow.

Multishot for a spread of targets
Microsoft Learn describes Multishot as firing three arrows per shot. Minecraft’s Java article clarifies their pattern: one travels straight ahead while two angle off to the sides. This makes Multishot the more suitable choice when targets are spread across the shot’s fan rather than arranged in a narrow line. Piercing for targets in a line
Piercing lets an arrow travel through entities. Minecraft’s Java article lists Piercing I through IV and states that one arrow can damage a number of mobs equal to the enchantment level plus one. That makes its effect best suited to a line of targets. It cannot be combined with Multishot. Source: Minecraft: Village & Pillage update.

Quick Charge reduces loading time
Quick Charge speeds up crossbow loading and can be used alongside either of the mutually exclusive shot enchantments. Minecraft’s Java article lists levels I–III and says each level reduces full charge time by 0.25 seconds. This is a Java-specific figure from the official Village & Pillage article; consult current documentation for the mechanics in your edition and version. Use Mending or Unbreaking for durability
These enchantments serve a different purpose from Multishot, Piercing, and Quick Charge. Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock creator documentation describes Unbreaking as reducing durability damage and Mending as repairing an item using experience. Consider them when preserving the crossbow matters more than adding a different projectile effect. Source: Microsoft Learn: Introduction to Enchantments.

What Curse of Vanishing means for a crossbow
Curse of Vanishing is not a performance enchantment. Microsoft Learn says an item with it disappears on death, so weigh that loss against any reason you have to use the curse. Source: Microsoft Learn: Introduction to Enchantments.
