Use Performance mode as the default on Nintendo Switch 2. It targets up to 40 frames per second (FPS), at up to 1080p when docked and up to 720p in handheld mode. Choose Quality mode only when a steadier 30 FPS target and a sharper image matter more than responsiveness. Handheld play also uses variable refresh rate (VRR), which helps uneven frame delivery look and feel smoother.
Neither mode is locked to its target in every scene. Independent testing found the largest drops in Phantom Liberty, crowded outdoor areas and firefights. CD PROJEKT RED estimates approximately up to two hours of battery runtime, with brightness and other conditions affecting the result; there is no publisher testing that proves one graphics mode saves a specific number of minutes over the other.

The recommended Switch 2 setup at a glance
Start with Performance mode unless you are deliberately prioritizing image sharpness. The higher frame-rate target makes aiming, driving and camera movement feel more responsive, while handheld VRR can smooth out changes in frame delivery. Quality mode is a valid alternative for players who prefer a cleaner image and can accept a 30 FPS target.

The resolution figures are dynamic ranges reported in 2025 coverage of Digital Foundry testing by Nintendo Life. They describe the resolutions the game can use as workload changes, not a fixed resolution selected once for the entire game.

How to select the mode
- Launch Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on Switch 2.
- Open the in-game Settings menu and go to the graphics or display options.
- Select Performance for the higher frame-rate target, or Quality for the 30 FPS visual-priority option.
- Apply the change and return to the game. Check the result in the type of scene you play most: driving in traffic, indoor combat, open-world traversal or Phantom Liberty missions.
The available evidence does not establish a mode-by-mode battery measurement, so select the mode for control or image quality rather than assuming that one choice provides a documented battery bonus.
Why Performance mode is the best default
More responsive control
Performance mode is designed around up to 40 FPS instead of 30 FPS. A higher frame-rate target can make turning, aiming and steering feel more immediate, particularly during close-quarters combat and fast driving. “Up to” is important: the target is not a guarantee that every frame will arrive at that rate.
Resolution gives way to motion when necessary
To pursue its higher target, Performance mode can reduce internal resolution. Independent ranges reach as low as 960×540 while docked and 640×360 in handheld, then rise as the scene becomes easier to render. At the top end, the mode can reach 1920×1080 docked and 1280×720 handheld. This behavior means a busy firefight may look softer than a quiet interior even though you have not changed a setting.

CD PROJEKT RED says the game uses VRR in handheld mode. When frame times vary, a compatible display can update at a matching cadence instead of presenting every frame at one fixed refresh interval. VRR cannot create missing frames or prevent a demanding scene from slowing down, but it can reduce visible judder and make fluctuations less distracting.

When Quality mode makes more sense
You prefer image clarity to response
Quality mode targets 30 FPS at 1080p in both TV and handheld modes according to CD PROJEKT RED. Its dynamic-resolution range is also higher: 1280×720–1920×1080 docked and 800×450–1440×810 handheld in the Digital Foundry figures reported by Nintendo Life. Fine details, distant signage and scene geometry can therefore look cleaner when the game has enough rendering headroom.
Your play is mostly story-focused
Nintendo Life’s report says Quality generally maintains its 30 FPS target through the main story. If you spend most of your time exploring at a measured pace, talking to characters and following missions outside the most complex areas, that steadier target may be preferable to Performance mode’s more variable 30-to-40 FPS behavior.
Know the Phantom Liberty exception
Quality is not a universal 30 FPS lock. The same report found approximately 20–25 FPS in complex Phantom Liberty environments. Those dips are a consequence of the expansion’s heavier scenes, not evidence that your console is malfunctioning. If a 30 FPS target becomes visibly uncomfortable in Dogtown or during dense combat, switching to Performance is the more practical response.

Dynamic resolution changes the internal rendering size to balance image detail and frame delivery. The output resolution shown by a television or handheld display does not mean every frame was rendered internally at that size.

These are ranges from independent testing reported in 2025, not a promise that every copy, scene or future update will reproduce an identical value. They are most useful for explaining the trade-off: Performance gives the renderer more flexibility to pursue speed, while Quality preserves a higher minimum internal resolution at a lower frame-rate target.
What to expect in the base game and Phantom Liberty
Main story
The main game is the better environment for seeing each mode near its intended behavior. Quality generally holds 30 FPS in the main story, while Performance commonly approaches 40 FPS indoors. Open-world travel and scenes with more traffic, effects or combat can move Performance toward 30 FPS.
Dogtown and expansion missions
Phantom Liberty places more load on the system. Quality can fall to approximately 20–25 FPS in complex environments, according to Nintendo Life’s account of Digital Foundry testing. Performance remains the sensible first choice when responsiveness matters, but it can also drop to around 30 FPS or slightly below outdoors and in busy firefights.
How to interpret a sudden dip
- A dip limited to a dense area or firefight is consistent with the reported behavior of the game.
- A softer image in a crowded scene can be dynamic resolution working as designed.
- Handheld VRR can make the transition less jarring, but it does not turn a 25 FPS scene into a 40 FPS scene.
- Changing modes alters the balance; it does not guarantee identical performance in every location.

If you are undecided, play the opening section in Performance, then revisit the same decision after a combat-heavy mission and a busy outdoor drive. The mode that feels better in those demanding situations is usually the better long-term choice.

Handheld VRR: what it does and does not do
VRR is available to the game in handheld mode, where the display can adjust its refresh timing to the frame delivery. Its benefit is consistency of motion perception when the game moves between different frame rates. A scene changing from near 40 FPS to the low 30s may feel less harsh than it would on a fixed-refresh presentation.
VRR is not an image-quality setting and it is not a performance booster. It does not raise the game’s frame-rate ceiling, eliminate dynamic-resolution changes or prevent the expansion’s heaviest scenes from slowing down. If handheld motion still feels too uneven, Performance mode gives the game the most favorable target; Quality remains the choice when clarity is more important.

CD PROJEKT RED states that the game can run on battery for “approximately up to 2 hours.” The publisher specifically notes that runtime varies with factors such as screen brightness. Treat that figure as an approximate upper estimate under particular conditions, not a guaranteed result for every play session, battery state or console setting.

Lower the handheld screen brightness when it remains comfortable to do so. Because brightness is explicitly identified as a variable, it is the clearest user-controlled adjustment supported by the publisher’s statement.

Do not assign an unsupported battery saving to a graphics mode
The available technical information does not provide separate battery tests for Performance and Quality. Performance may render at a lower internal resolution in demanding scenes, while Quality uses a lower frame-rate target, but those facts do not establish a precise battery advantage for either mode. Choose between them for motion and clarity; use the approximately two-hour figure for planning charging needs.
Plan around conditions that change the estimate
- Use the approximate two-hour figure as a planning ceiling rather than a promise.
- Expect brightness and other operating conditions to move actual runtime up or down.
- For a long trip, begin with a well-charged console and plan a charging opportunity instead of assuming the entire session will fit inside the estimate.
Which Switch 2 edition contains the complete game?
The physical product is Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition for Nintendo Switch 2. It contains the base game and the Phantom Liberty expansion on a 64 GB game card. That matters when deciding what content the performance discussion covers: the demanding Dogtown and expansion missions are part of this edition, not a separate example from another platform.
Troubleshooting common complaints
“Performance mode is not staying at 40 FPS.”
The official wording is “up to 40 FPS,” not a locked 40 FPS promise. Independent testing found Performance commonly around 40 FPS indoors, with drops to 30 FPS or slightly below outdoors and in busy firefights. If the dip occurs in those conditions, switching to Quality is unlikely to remove it in Phantom Liberty; Performance is already the mode intended to favor responsiveness.

“The handheld image looks soft.”
Performance mode can dynamically range from 640×360 to 1280×720 in handheld testing. A low internal resolution during a complex scene can soften fine detail. Quality raises the reported handheld range to 800×450–1440×810, but it trades the higher resolution floor for a 30 FPS target.
“Quality mode is dropping below 30 FPS.”
That behavior is documented in complex Phantom Liberty environments, where testing reported approximately 20–25 FPS. Compare the location and workload before treating the result as a fault. Performance is the appropriate alternative when those dips interfere with aiming or movement.
“VRR did not increase the frame rate.”
That is expected. VRR smooths the presentation of changing frame times in handheld mode; it does not raise the target or create additional frames. Use Performance when you want the game to pursue the higher target.
