Yes, Cyberpunk 2077 is playable on Steam Deck, but the dependable target is 30 FPS, not a city-wide 40 FPS lock. Start with the in-game Steam Deck preset, then use 1280×800 resolution, FSR 2.1 Quality, ray tracing off, Low crowd density and an internal SSD. That profile is the safest choice for Night City, Phantom Liberty and Dogtown.

A 40 FPS attempt works well through much of the base game on an OLED model with an 80 Hz display, yet written Deck-specific testing reports low-30s performance and dips to 28 FPS in open Dogtown. Update 2.5 removed FSR 3 upscaling, so anyone who selected it before the patch should switch to FSR 2.1. Frame generation and FSR 4 injectors are optional experiments, not the stock solution.

Is Cyberpunk 2077 playable on Steam Deck?

It is officially Deck Verified, a status reported by Steam Deck HQ and CanIRun.gg and recorded as granted on 28 February 2023 by RottenWiFi. Verified confirms controller support, fullscreen behaviour and a compatibility pass; it does not promise a frame-rate floor in every district. Steam Deck HQ reports that the default preset can fall into the low 20s in open-world areas and Phantom Liberty, while its custom profile is usually 40 FPS in the base game.

The apparent hardware mismatch is explained by resolution. CD PROJEKT RED’s desktop minimum targets 1080p Low and 30 FPS on a GTX 1060 6GB, RX 580 8GB or Arc A380, whereas the Deck renders at 1280×800. CanIRun.gg scores the Deck GPU at 48% of that desktop-minimum class on paper and notes that the PC figures assume 1080p. The Deck still has the 16 GB RAM CDPR lists for its recommended tier, but its 8 RDNA 2 compute units and 4–15 W APU envelope require aggressive settings.

What changed for Steam Deck after Update 2.5?

Update 2.5 shipped on 22 October 2026. CD PROJEKT RED says: “Updated the selection of AMD FSR options. FSR 3 upscaling is no longer included, while FSR 2.1, FSR 4, and FSR 3.1 Frame Generation remain available.” If your old configuration still points to FSR 3 upscaling, select FSR 2.1 instead.

The patch also “Introduced various performance optimizations, including improvements specifically for Ray Tracing and for PlayStation 5 Pro.” CDPR published no Steam Deck frame-rate table or percentage improvement, so there is no defensible 2.5 FPS multiplier to apply to earlier guides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FSR 4 appears in the PC menu when a compatible AMD card and supporting driver are present. The Deck APU is RDNA 2, and native FSR 4 availability on Deck has not been confirmed. Videos that show FSR 4.1 on a Deck are using OptiScaler or HelixSR injection rather than proving that the official option is enabled.

What hardware, storage and software do I need?

Deck hardware

  • Valve’s hardware uses a 6 nm AMD APU with a Zen 2 4-core/8-thread CPU at 2.4–3.5 GHz, eight RDNA 2 CUs at 1.6 GHz and a 4–15 W APU power range.
  • All models have 16 GB LPDDR5 and a 1280×800 display. The OLED model adds a 7.4-inch HDR panel, up to 90 Hz refresh and a 50 Wh battery.
  • Valve quotes 3–12 hours for OLED gameplay depending on content. Its estimate assumes 30 FPS, 50% brightness and 50% volume; Cyberpunk is near the short end of that range.

Install on the internal SSD

CD PROJEKT RED states: “It’s especially important to note that running the game on an SSD is now a requirement. We advise against running the game on an HDD (or on a SD card on Steam Deck) due to lower bandwidth which may cause new content to not stream properly.” Use the internal NVMe drive whenever possible. The official desktop requirement remains 70 GB, while FreddysGamingBenchmarks reported a 76 GB installed Steam copy after 2.5, so leave additional free space for updates and shader data.

A 64 GB LCD model cannot hold a 70 GB-plus installation alongside SteamOS. Replacing its internal 2230 SSD is the storage path that follows CDPR’s bandwidth guidance; placing the game on a microSD card does not.

Proton and first launch

Steam Deck HQ and CanIRun.gg list ProtonDB Gold. Post-2.5 testers used Proton Experimental or Proton 10. Shader pre-compilation can take 20–40 minutes on an internal SSD according to Switchblade Gaming; interrupting it and launching immediately can leave first-seen effects stuttering.

What are the best 30 FPS Steam Deck settings?

Use 30 FPS when consistency, Dogtown play and battery life matter more than a smoother 40 FPS cadence. Cap at 30 in Quick Access (QAM) or in the game, keep the display at 60 Hz, and never leave the frame rate uncapped.

Setting 30 FPS recommendation Why
Resolution 1280×800 Native Deck output; avoids unnecessary scaling.
Upscaling AMD FSR 2.1 Quality Current stock recommendation after FSR 3 upscaling was removed.
FSR sharpening 0.50 as a starting point Steam Deck HQ’s profile; lower values remain valid if halos bother you.
Ray tracing Off, including RT Reflections, Shadows, Lighting and Local Shadows The Deck is far below CDPR’s RT minimum class.
Crowd Density Low Reduces CPU load in busy districts.
Texture Quality High PCGamesN’s Deck profile keeps textures high while cutting costly effects.
Local Shadow Mesh and Local Shadow Quality Medium Balances detail and frame time.
Cascaded Shadows Range and Distant Shadows Low Limits long-distance shadow work.
Volumetric Fog Medium Retains atmosphere without the highest cost.
Volumetric Clouds Off A substantial workload reduction in outdoor scenes.
Screen Space Reflections Medium Preserves wet-surface detail at a manageable cost.
Ambient Occlusion Low Reduces shading overhead.
Anisotropy 8× Improves oblique-surface texture clarity.
Contact Shadows On Keeps local grounding detail.
Improved Facial Lighting Geometry On Maintains character-face lighting.
Subsurface Scattering Medium Moderates skin-lighting cost.
Color Precision Medium Balanced image quality.
Mirror Quality Low Reduces mirror-rendering cost.
Level of Detail Medium Preserves geometry while controlling frame time.
Motion Blur Off or Low Clearer image at a capped frame rate.
Dynamic Resolution Scaling Off initially Keep one predictable upscaling path.

PCGamesN’s less-customised profile uses the Steam Deck quick preset, FSR 2.1 Balanced, zero sharpening, Frame Generation Off, High textures and Low crowd density. It reports roughly 35 FPS, occasional mid-40s spikes and rare drops below 30 FPS. RottenWiFi recommends starting there, then moving to the lower-shadow, lower-volumetric values above if the preset fluctuates. Steam Deck HQ instead advises replacing the preset because it felt clunky and could reach the low 20s.

How do I configure the profile step by step?

  1. Install Cyberpunk 2077 on the internal SSD and allow Steam to finish shader processing before the first serious session.
  2. Open the game and choose Settings → Graphics. Set Resolution to 1280×800, Ray Tracing to Off and Crowd Density to Low.
  3. Under Resolution Scaling, select AMD FSR 2.1 and Super Resolution Quality. Set sharpening around 0.50, then apply the shadow, volumetric, reflection, ambient-occlusion, mirror and LOD values in the table.
  4. Turn Frame Generation Off. Do not enable FSR 3 upscaling; it was removed in Update 2.5. Leave FSR 4 alone unless you are deliberately using an injector.
  5. Open Steam’s Quick Access menu, select the Performance tab and cap the game at 30 FPS. Leave Manual GPU Clock disabled, Half Rate Shading Off and TDP unrestricted until the stock profile is stable.
  6. Enlarge interface elements in Settings → Accessibility if the HUD or subtitles are difficult to read. Steam Deck HQ identifies small text as the main Deck-specific usability issue.
  7. Play a repeatable route that includes driving, a crowded intersection, combat effects, an outdoor area and an interior. If the cap is stable, only then consider a 40 FPS experiment.

Do not stack a QAM-level FSR filter on top of the game’s FSR. Double upscaling softens the image. An uncapped frame rate also creates 28–45 FPS judder and increases power draw.

Can Steam Deck hold 40 FPS?

Forty FPS is a base-game attempt, not a universal lock. Steam Deck HQ’s April 2026 profile uses an in-game 40 FPS cap, 80 Hz OLED refresh, FSR 2.1 Quality and the settings listed above. It reports mostly smooth 40 FPS in the base game, with exceptions while driving through very large open areas.

Dogtown is the limiting case. Steam Deck HQ writes: “In open areas of Dogtown, expecting a solid 40 FPS is unrealistic. It consistently drops into the low 30s and can even dip to 28.” Interiors and story missions can hold the target more often. RottenWiFi reaches the same conclusion and advises returning to 30 FPS if ordinary play falls below roughly 35–38 FPS.

On an OLED, set the display to 80 Hz and cap the game at 40 in Graphics. A 40 Hz cap is another sensible OLED option. On a 60 Hz LCD, 30 FPS is the cleanest synchronization; chasing 40 usually means accepting uneven cadence or dips.

Should I enable frame generation, FSR 4 or DLSS?

Not for the first setup. PCGamesN warns: “Do not enable AMD frame generation, as right now it adds some very noticeable input lag.” Frame generation works best after a sufficiently high base frame rate; it cannot repair a 20-FPS Dogtown scene without adding latency and visual errors.

FSR 3.1 Frame Generation remains in the post-2.5 menu, but it is separate from the removed FSR 3 upscaler. Native DLSS requires a GeForce RTX card according to CDPR and is not a Steam Deck feature. Community setups use HelixSR or OptiScaler to inject DLSS 3.7 or FSR 4.1, then pair it with LSFG-VK 2.0 or Mako.

Those tools are unofficial and patch-fragile. They can add latency, ghosting and troubleshooting work, and the base frame rate can still fall into the 20s before generated frames are displayed. If you experiment, back up saves, change one variable at a time, record your original files and know how to remove the injector after an update.

One community option is Decky MultiFrameGen. It is an enthusiast path, not a requirement for a playable stock installation.

Why should ray tracing stay off?

Every Deck-focused profile turns ray tracing off. CDPR’s RT minimum is an RTX 2060, RX 6800 XT or Arc A750 class GPU with 16 GB RAM at the desktop baseline, far above the Deck’s eight RDNA 2 CUs and 4–15 W APU. Update 2.5’s RT optimisations do not include a Deck FPS figure and do not change that recommendation.

Disable the master Ray Tracing switch and the individual RT Reflections, RT Shadows, RT Lighting and RT Local Shadows options. If you enable them for a screenshot, restore the stock profile before judging performance elsewhere.

How does Dogtown and Phantom Liberty performance differ?

Phantom Liberty’s Dogtown combines dense crowds, traffic, volumetrics and effects, making it the hardest named area in written Deck testing. Open markets and roads are more demanding than interiors and scripted indoor missions. A 30 FPS cap absorbs those spikes; a 40 FPS cap exposes them as visible drops.

Use a busy market intersection, traffic driving, an effects-heavy fight, an open outdoor route and an interior as your checks. This is more informative than standing in a quiet room. Switchblade Gaming reports a steadier 30 FPS with occasional marketplace dips, but Steam Deck HQ’s measured low-30s and 28-FPS Dogtown results are the stricter expectation for a 40-FPS profile.

How long does Cyberpunk 2077 last on LCD and OLED?

Power draw rises with the frame cap, brightness and scene complexity. Steam Deck HQ observed 2–2.5 hours in its 40-FPS, 25 W profile and rated battery performance 2/5. Switchblade Gaming reports about 1.5 hours on LCD and about 2 hours on OLED at 15 W, 30 FPS, 50–60% brightness and Airplane Mode, with 2–2.5 hours on Badlands and highways at 12–13 W.

Valve says the OLED has 30–50% more battery life than LCD because of its larger battery, more efficient APU and lower-draw panel. That does not guarantee more Cyberpunk FPS: both models use the same Zen 2 and RDNA 2 class. Lowering the cap to 30, using moderate brightness and avoiding an uncapped frame rate are the practical battery controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What changes when I play docked?

Docked play can target 1920×1080 with FSR, but the Deck retains the same 15 W APU ceiling. Keep ray tracing off and use a 30 FPS cap unless the performance overlay shows consistent GPU headroom. An official Docking Station or a compatible USB-C hub can provide display, power, USB and wired networking; Valve lists the official dock at $79.00 in 2026.

At 1080p, FSR Balanced may be necessary if Quality cannot maintain the chosen cap. Make that change only after confirming that native 1280×800 handheld settings are stable, because a higher output resolution increases the workload.

What should I do when performance or loading goes wrong?

  • Stutter after the first launch: let shader pre-compilation finish. Starting before it completes can cause first-seen-effect stutter.
  • Loading-screen freeze: verify the game files, disable overlays and try Proton Experimental or Proton 10. Switchblade Gaming also documents Proton 8.0-5 and the launch option PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% for this symptom; use it only as a targeted workaround.
  • Cursor drift or mouse-mode behaviour: test a different Proton version and use gamepad mode rather than leaving a desktop mouse profile active.
  • Washed-out HDR: Switchblade Gaming advises disabling in-game HDR on Deck when Proton produces an SDR image with incorrect tone mapping.
  • Sudden Dogtown dips: keep the cap at 30, verify Crowd Density is Low and reduce shadow distance or volumetric settings before touching resolution.
  • Soft or blurry image: ensure only the in-game FSR path is active, use Quality instead of Balanced and remove any QAM-level FSR filter.
  • Missing FSR 4: that is expected on an unmodified Deck; official FSR 4 requires a compatible AMD card and driver, while Deck videos generally inject it.

CDPR’s Windows troubleshooting path is Settings → Graphics → Run Benchmark, with results documented under %userprofile%DocumentsCD Projekt RedCyberpunk 2077benchmarkResults. SteamOS does not necessarily use that Windows path, so treat it as a reference rather than a guaranteed Deck location.

Which profile should you choose?

Choose the 30 FPS stock profile if you want the fewest surprises, regular Dogtown play, longer sessions or an LCD Deck. Choose 40 FPS only if you own an OLED or otherwise accept dips and are willing to return to 30 when open-world frame times fluctuate. Injector-based FSR 4, DLSS or frame-generation setups are for enthusiasts who understand their added latency, ghosting and patch-maintenance burden; they are not needed to make the game playable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Deck Verified guarantee 30 FPS in Phantom Liberty?

No. The badge confirms compatibility characteristics such as controls and fullscreen behaviour, not a performance floor. Dense outdoor Dogtown scenes are specifically documented as the place where a 40-FPS target breaks down.

Should I buy an OLED Deck just for Cyberpunk 2077?

The OLED adds a 90 Hz panel and Valve’s 30–50% battery-life advantage, but it uses the same CPU/GPU class. It is a display and endurance upgrade, not a guaranteed frame-rate upgrade for this game.

Can I keep the game on a microSD card if the internal drive is full?

CD PROJEKT RED advises against an SD-card install because its lower bandwidth can prevent new content from streaming correctly. An internal SSD replacement is the standards-compliant route for a 64 GB LCD model that lacks room.

How can I make the Deck HUD easier to read?

Open the game’s Settings menu, enter Accessibility and enlarge the HUD and text elements. Steam Deck HQ identifies interface scale as the main Deck-specific readability issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will FSR 3.1 Frame Generation fix Dogtown dips?

It can display generated frames, but it does not raise the underlying simulation rate and may add latency or ghosting. Establish a stable 30-FPS base profile first instead of using frame generation to conceal low base performance.
