The fastest way to define a word without leaving a web page is to use your browser’s built-in or extension-based lookup. Microsoft Edge already includes a right-click Define command. On Chrome, Google Dictionary adds double-click pop-ups, a toolbar search and optional history. Firefox users can choose among add-ons that use selected text, toolbar buttons or keyboard shortcuts, with different dictionary sources and privacy settings. The best choice depends on your browser, languages, need for pronunciation or saved words, and how much website access you are comfortable granting.
What is the best dictionary extension for a browser?
There is no single winner for every browser. Edge users should try the native Define command first because it requires no installation and can show definitions, synonyms, antonyms and pronunciation. Chrome users who want an effortless double-click lookup will find Google Dictionary the most direct option. Firefox users need to choose between broader workflows: Dictionary Glance combines selected-text, toolbar and shortcut lookups; Dictionary on Click emphasizes double-click access, languages and local history; and lookup provides Cambridge Dictionary and Wikipedia links.

How do I define a word without leaving the page?
Use the trigger your browser or extension supports. The result normally appears in a pop-up, side panel or small toolbar panel while the original tab remains open.

Double-click a word
Google Dictionary for Chrome and Dictionary on Click for Firefox can open a definition when you double-click a word. This is the quickest method for ordinary prose, although it can conflict with websites that use double-click for selecting, editing or zooming.
Highlight text and open a context menu
Select a word or phrase, then open the browser context menu. Edge’s native workflow is highlight the word → right-click → Define. Firefox add-ons such as Dictionary Glance and lookup also use selected text, which is useful when a word is difficult to double-click or when you want to look up a phrase.
Use a toolbar panel or keyboard shortcut
Dictionary Glance offers toolbar and keyboard-shortcut lookups in addition to selection. Google Dictionary has a toolbar dictionary for complete definitions. These methods are practical when a page blocks text selection or when you want to type a word that is not visible on the page.
Does Microsoft Edge already have a dictionary?
Yes. Microsoft documents a built-in online dictionary in Edge, so an extension is not required for the standard definition workflow. Highlight a word, right-click it, choose Define, and read the panel for definitions, synonyms, antonyms and pronunciation.
Save specialist terms in Edge
Edge also supports a customizable word list. Open Settings → Languages → Customize dictionary to add specialized words that Edge should recognize. This is useful for game names, character names, technical jargon or other terms that a general dictionary may flag as misspellings.
Edge limitations to check
Microsoft notes that feature availability can vary by region. The built-in tool is an online dictionary, so the documented workflow does not establish offline operation. If Define is missing or produces no result, verify your Edge version, language and network connection before installing an add-on.

Which Chrome dictionary extension should I use?
Chrome users have two notably different choices in the documented listings: a unified pop-up tool and a directory that lets you choose established reference sites.
Google Dictionary: the quickest general-purpose lookup
Google Dictionary’s Chrome Web Store listing describes three workflows: double-click any word for a pop-up definition, use the toolbar dictionary for complete definitions, and optionally store lookup history. It lists Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Czech, Dutch, English (UK and US), French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Slovak, Spanish and Turkish.
The listing reports version 4.2.6, updated February 9, 2026, with about 3,000,000 users and 13.7K ratings. Those figures are store metadata and can change; they are not a guarantee of accuracy, update speed or privacy.
Google Dictionary privacy choices
History is optional rather than mandatory. The listing says saved history can be downloaded and made available to other extensions, so review that setting if lookup records could reveal reading, work or research habits. Turning history off removes the learning benefit of a searchable word list but reduces retained data.
Lookup Definitions Online: when source selection matters
Lookup Definitions Online is a directory-style extension rather than one consolidated dictionary. Its listing names Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, Collins English Dictionary, Online Etymology Dictionary and other sources. Choose it when you prefer to compare a word across named references instead of receiving a single blended result.
Which Firefox dictionary add-on fits my workflow?
Firefox has several add-ons with distinct triggers and data practices. Your choice should follow how you select words, which sources you trust and whether you want saved words.

| Add-on | Lookup triggers | Sources and features | Privacy or listing details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dictionary Glance | Selected text, toolbar and keyboard shortcut | Popover, saved words and recent lookup history; primary definitions from the Free Dictionary API with Wikipedia REST API summaries as fallback | Requires access to data for all websites; version 5.0, updated April 30, 2026 |
| lookup | Highlight text | Cambridge Dictionary and Wikipedia results in a popup with links to the sources | 132 users; 4.8 rating from 5 reviews; updated March 10, 2025 |
| Dictionary on Click | Double-click and toolbar panel | 18 languages, themes, pronunciation when available, and optional local-only history; mainly Wiktionary, with Free Dictionary API and Datamuse available for English | Developer states no remote telemetry; version 0.3.0, updated October 12, 2026 |
Choose Dictionary Glance for multiple entry points
Dictionary Glance is the broadest workflow in this group: you can select text, press its shortcut or open the toolbar. Saved words and recent lookups make it useful for language study. Its all-websites permission is significant, however; install it only if that access fits your threat model and browsing habits.
Choose lookup for named Cambridge results
The lookup add-on fetches a definition from Cambridge Dictionary and can use Wikipedia, then displays links to those sources. Its small user base and older update date are listing facts, not proof that it is unsafe or unreliable, but they are reasons to check current Firefox compatibility before depending on it.
Choose Dictionary on Click for languages and local history
Dictionary on Click supports 18 languages, themes and pronunciation when a result provides it. Its developer describes history as optional and stored locally on the device, and says the add-on has no remote telemetry. Definitions come mainly from Wiktionary; English lookups can also use the Free Dictionary API and Datamuse, so source style may differ by language.
Which dictionary sources and languages are available?
Language coverage is not interchangeable between extensions. Google Dictionary publishes the longest explicit language list in the available listings, while Firefox add-ons describe language counts or source-specific behavior rather than a matching catalog.
| Tool | Language information documented | Pronunciation or translation details |
|---|---|---|
| Google Dictionary (Chrome) | Arabic; Brazilian Portuguese; Chinese (Simplified and Traditional); Czech; Dutch; English (UK and US); French; German; Hindi; Italian; Japanese; Korean; Russian; Slovak; Spanish; Turkish | Listing provides definitions and language support; verify the result for the specific language before relying on pronunciation |
| Dictionary on Click (Firefox) | 18 languages | Pronunciation when available; the listing does not provide a full language-by-language table |
| Dictionary Glance (Firefox) | Language count is not stated in its listing | Definitions from Free Dictionary API, with Wikipedia REST API fallback |
| lookup (Firefox) | Cambridge Dictionary and Wikipedia lookups for highlighted text | Pronunciation and translation coverage depend on those sources |
If you need a particular variety, such as UK versus US English or Simplified versus Traditional Chinese, confirm the extension’s current store description and test representative words. A language menu does not necessarily mean every feature—audio, inflections, examples or synonyms—is available in that language.
How private are browser dictionary extensions?
Privacy depends on three separate questions: what pages the extension can read, where a definition is fetched, and whether your searches are retained. A tool can be convenient yet still require broad permissions or send lookup text to a remote service.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Website access: Dictionary Glance requires access to data for all websites. That permission enables selected-text detection but gives the add-on broad visibility.
- History: Google Dictionary makes history optional; its listing says history can be downloaded and shared with other extensions. Dictionary on Click describes history as optional and local-only.
- Remote calls: Dictionary Glance uses the Free Dictionary API and may fall back to Wikipedia’s REST API. Dictionary on Click relies mainly on Wiktionary and can call the Free Dictionary API and Datamuse for English. These designs imply network requests for many lookups; they do not document a complete offline database.
- Telemetry: The Dictionary on Click developer states that it has no remote telemetry. That is a developer disclosure, not an independent audit.
Before installing, open the extension’s store permissions and privacy section, disable optional history if you do not need it, and avoid looking up confidential text. A dictionary pop-up is not a privacy boundary: selected words may still be sent to a service that supplies the definition.
Do dictionary extensions work offline?
The documented listings do not promise full offline operation for these tools. Dictionary on Click’s local-only history means your saved lookup records can stay on the device; it does not mean its definition databases are stored locally. API-based tools, Edge’s online dictionary and source-linked add-ons generally need a connection when fetching a result.
If offline access is essential, test the exact extension in airplane mode before adopting it and check whether it ships a bundled dictionary rather than calling a web API. Do not treat a cached pop-up or previously saved word as proof that new lookups will work offline.
How compatible are dictionary extensions across Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari?
Chromium browsers share much of the same extension technology, but compatibility is not automatic. Microsoft explains that Edge, Chrome, Opera and Brave are Chromium-based and can share APIs, while warning that API parity is incomplete and that developers must check browser-specific APIs and publish to each relevant store. Firefox and Safari use separate extension environments.

The available documentation does not establish equivalent support for Safari or a universal PDF workflow. Safari uses its own extension environment, and PDF handling can differ from normal web pages. Treat both as compatibility checks rather than assumed features.

Recommended Free Tools
- Identify your browser and need. Check whether Edge’s native Define command already meets your needs. Otherwise select a Chrome or Firefox listing based on trigger, language and source.
- Read the current permissions. Pay particular attention to “data for all websites,” history storage and any disclosure of remote services.
- Install from the browser’s official extension or add-on store. Confirm the publisher name, version and last-updated date shown on the listing.
- Set the trigger. Enable double-click, a context-menu item, toolbar button or keyboard shortcut according to the extension’s options. If double-click interferes with a site, use selection or the toolbar instead.
- Choose language or source options. Select the required English variant or other language where the extension exposes that setting. For directory tools, decide which dictionary site should open first.
- Test ordinary and difficult cases. Try a common word, an inflected form, a phrase, a word in your target language and a page that uses heavy scripting. Check pronunciation, synonyms and examples if those features matter.
- Review history after testing. Delete sample lookups, turn off history if unnecessary, and verify whether saved words are local or synchronized.
What should I do when a lookup does not work?
- No pop-up after a double-click: select the word and use the context menu or toolbar. The page may intercept double-click events.
- Nothing appears for a selected phrase: try a single word. Many dictionary endpoints handle headwords better than long phrases.
- Definitions are incomplete: open the named source link or switch to a tool that uses a different dictionary. Wiktionary, Free Dictionary API, Cambridge and Wikipedia can return different levels of detail.
- Pronunciation is missing: the source may not provide audio for that language or inflection. Try the base form and check whether the extension says pronunciation is available only for some entries.
- Results stop on a particular page: test another normal webpage. Protected pages, browser-internal pages, PDF viewers and embedded frames can restrict extensions.
- Edge Define is unavailable: check region and language settings, update Edge, and confirm network access. The documented feature can vary by region.
- Privacy concerns appear after installation: disable optional history, remove broad site access where the browser permits it, or uninstall and choose a narrower workflow.
Can developers package an offline spelling dictionary?
For developers building a Firefox extension, MDN documents a dictionaries manifest key that points to .dic and .aff files. The manifest also requires an extension ID through browser_specific_settings. This is a packaging mechanism for spelling dictionaries, not evidence that every consumer dictionary add-on includes offline definitions or pronunciation data.
The distinction matters: a bundled spelling dictionary can validate words locally, while a definition extension may still need a remote API for meanings, examples, audio or synonyms. Plan permissions, update delivery and language files separately from the lookup interface.
Which option should you choose?
| Your priority | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| No installation on Edge | Edge built-in Define | Right-click a highlighted word for definitions, synonyms, antonyms and pronunciation; includes a customizable word list |
| Fast double-click lookup on Chrome | Google Dictionary | Double-click pop-up, toolbar search, optional history and a published multi-language list |
| Named reference dictionaries | Lookup Definitions Online | Directory links to Cambridge, Oxford, Collins, Online Etymology Dictionary and other sources |
| Several Firefox triggers and saved words | Dictionary Glance | Selection, toolbar and shortcut workflows plus saved words and recent history |
| Firefox languages, themes and local history | Dictionary on Click | 18 languages, pronunciation when available, optional local-only history and a no-remote-telemetry developer disclosure |
| Cambridge-linked Firefox results | lookup | Highlighted text opens Cambridge Dictionary and Wikipedia results with source links |
Make the final choice from the combination of trigger, language, source and data handling—not from user counts alone. Store numbers, ratings, versions and permissions change, so recheck the listing when you install or renew your setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a dictionary extension on a Kindle or e-reader browser?
The tools described here target desktop browser extension environments such as Chrome, Edge and Firefox. E-readers and embedded browsers usually do not expose those extension stores or APIs, so you would need the device’s own dictionary feature or a separate reading application.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does a dictionary show a different meaning than another dictionary?
Entries differ because each source selects its own senses, examples, editorial scope and update schedule. A Wiktionary result, a Free Dictionary API response and a Cambridge or Oxford entry may emphasize different definitions without one being technically broken.
Can browser dictionaries define words inside online games?
It depends on how the game is delivered. Text in a normal web page may be selectable, while canvas-rendered game text, protected frames or browser-internal content may prevent an extension from seeing the word.
How can I keep a personal vocabulary list private?
Prefer a tool that explicitly stores history locally, such as Dictionary on Click’s documented local-only option, and leave optional history disabled elsewhere. Also clear existing entries and review extension permissions after major browser or add-on updates.
