PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchStart with the least destructive checks: note the exact symptom and Steam Deck compatibility label, install SteamOS updates, restart the Deck, temporarily close third-party applications installed in Desktop Mode, then retest. If only one game fails, verify that game’s files and requirements and test its Proton setting. Reserve SteamOS repair, factory reset, or re-imaging for problems affecting the whole system or for a confirmed operating-system fault.
A compatibility badge is a useful clue, not a guarantee. A game marked Playable may need manual configuration, while Unknown means Valve has not supplied testing information. An immediate crash does not by itself prove that a title is Unsupported. Work through one change at a time so you know which action altered the result.

1. Identify exactly what is failing
Before changing settings, define the scope and timing of the failure. Write down the game name, the exact error text, what appears on screen, and whether the problem began after a game, Proton, or SteamOS update. These details determine whether you should investigate a title, the network, or the Deck itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- One game fails while other games launch: begin with that title’s compatibility details, files, requirements, and per-game compatibility tool. This is a practical diagnostic priority, not a guaranteed cause.
- Several games or applications fail: prioritize SteamOS updates, a restart, and isolation of third-party Desktop Mode software before experimenting with individual games.
- The game reaches a launcher but fails later: record the launcher error separately from a failure that occurs before any window appears.
- The failure follows an update: note which update and whether reverting a setting changes the behavior.
- Steam reports a platform error: treat “Game is not available on your current platform” as a support and requirements issue, not as an ordinary crash.
Do not infer an Unsupported rating merely from an immediate crash. First check the Store page and the exact message Steam displays.

Valve’s Steam Deck – Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide is the primary reference for the Deck’s compatibility labels and software checks.
2. Read the Steam Deck compatibility details
Open the game’s Steam Store page and find the Steam Deck Compatibility section. Valve uses four states:
| Label | What Valve’s label means | How to use it while troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game is considered to work great on Deck by default. | A launch problem still warrants file, update, Proton, or system checks; Verified is not a promise that every installation will launch. |
| Playable | The game works, but may require manual configuration. | Read the Store page’s listed unmet criteria and follow any configuration notes before treating the failure as a system fault. |
| Unsupported | The game is not currently considered playable on Deck. | Inspect the unmet Verified requirements. An experiment may be informative, but the rating does not promise a working result. |
| Unknown | Valve has not yet supplied testing information for the title. | Unknown is missing test information, not proof that the game fails or succeeds. |
For a Playable or Unsupported title, expand the compatibility details to see which Verified criteria are not met. A missing input, text-legibility, launcher, or performance criterion can point you toward the relevant test; it does not identify every cause of a crash. For Unknown games, use the same cautious process without assuming that the absence of a badge is a diagnosis.
3. Perform the safe, system-wide isolation steps
Do these checks before changing several game settings at once. They are reversible and address common sources of instability.
- Install available SteamOS updates. In Gaming Mode, open Settings, choose System, and install any offered updates. Allow the Deck to complete the restart required by the update.
- Restart the Deck. A full restart clears a stalled Steam client, graphics process, or compatibility process without deleting games or saves stored in the normal locations.
- Temporarily exit third-party Desktop Mode applications. Switch to Desktop Mode, close overlays, launchers, tuning utilities, and other software you installed outside the standard Steam experience, then return to Gaming Mode and retest. Re-enable applications one at a time after the game works so an interaction can be identified.
- Change one variable at a time. Keep a short note of the original setting, the change, and the result. If you alter Proton, graphics, launch options, and network settings simultaneously, you cannot tell which experiment mattered.
Valve gives these update, restart, and third-party-app isolation steps in its Steam Deck – Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide. They are first-line isolation measures, not proof that a particular application caused your problem.

4. Repair one Steam game without changing the whole Deck
Verify the installed files
A damaged or incomplete installation can leave a title stuck at “Preparing to Launch,” close immediately, or fail after an update. In Desktop Mode or Gaming Mode, open your Library, select the game, open its menu, choose Properties, then use the installed-files option to Verify integrity of game files. Let Steam finish downloading replacements, then restart the game before trying another change.
Verification checks the local installation; it does not change the game’s Deck rating and cannot repair a missing operating-system feature or an incompatible launcher.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check the game’s operating-system and hardware requirements
Read the Store page’s system requirements, supported operating systems, and any launcher requirement. A title that requires Windows-only software, a particular graphics feature, anti-cheat support, or hardware beyond the Deck may not launch even when the files are intact.
If Steam displays Game is not available on your current platform, Steam’s explanation is that the title does not support the operating system currently in use. Check the game’s supported OS and hardware requirements rather than treating that message as a generic crash. Valve documents this case in Game is not available on your current platform.
Test Proton for a Windows build
For a Steam library game that uses a Windows build, select a compatibility tool for that title:

- Open Library and highlight the game.
- Open the game’s menu and choose Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose the latest available Proton version, allow Steam to install any required component, and launch the game again.
Valve’s wording is direct: “Try choosing the latest version of Proton.” Treat that as a controlled test, not a guarantee. Proton behavior depends on the title, its launcher, anti-cheat, updates, and the selected Proton release. If the game had been using a different tool, record that original choice so you can return to it.
Steam may download the Windows version of a game when only the Linux version is installed and you select a Proton tool. That download can be large; confirm that you have enough storage and a stable connection before starting it. A Proton selector is available for Steam library games. A non-Steam application may require its own compatibility configuration and does not necessarily expose this same Library path.
Adjust performance only when performance is the symptom
If the game launches but stutters, freezes under load, or closes when a scene becomes demanding, lower the graphics preset or individual settings and retest. Change one setting at a time, beginning with demanding options such as resolution, shadows, or effects. A graphics change can improve a performance problem but is not a general remedy for a login error, missing platform support, or a corrupted installation. Valve includes graphics-setting changes among its software troubleshooting suggestions in the Steam Deck software guide.
5. Follow the symptom instead of applying unrelated fixes
Stuck at “Preparing to Launch” or an immediate close
After the update/restart isolation, verify the files, inspect requirements, and test the per-game Proton setting. Also close non-essential applications and overlays. Steam’s general launch guidance covers these checks in Games do not run after “Preparing to Launch”. Those are general support steps; they do not establish one diagnosis for every Deck failure.
If the title is Playable or Unsupported, read the unmet criteria before spending time on repeated Proton swaps. If it is Unknown, lack of testing information means you must rely on the title’s actual requirements and observed behavior.

“Game is not available on your current platform”
Use the Store page to confirm the supported operating system and hardware. If the publisher does not support the Deck’s operating system or the title depends on hardware the Deck does not provide, file verification and a Proton change may not resolve the limitation. Do not re-image the Deck to bypass a clear platform requirement.
Login, download, or connection failure
Keep network checks for symptoms that actually involve a connection. Check Steam’s service status, then try another available Wi-Fi band on your router or access point. A different band can distinguish a local wireless-path problem from a service or account problem; it cannot explain an offline crash or a graphics-only fault.
Use Valve’s Steam Hardware – Network + Wi-Fi Troubleshooting guidance for the status and Wi-Fi-band checks. If Steam is experiencing a broad outage, changing Proton or reinstalling a game will not restore the service.
Only one title fails while everything else works
Prioritize the title’s Store compatibility details, file verification, operating-system and hardware requirements, and its per-game Proton selection. This ordering follows the scope of Valve’s per-game support instructions; it is a useful diagnostic inference, not a rule that proves the game itself is at fault.
Many games, applications, or Gaming Mode features are unstable
Return to system updates, a restart, and third-party Desktop Mode app isolation. If instability remains across unrelated titles, stop cycling through individual Proton versions and investigate SteamOS support and recovery options. A system-wide symptom provides a stronger reason to consider an operating-system repair than a single title that fails its own compatibility criteria.

6. Compare the available paths before escalating
| Situation | Start with | Why this path fits | Avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|---|
| One Steam game will not launch | Compatibility details, file verification, requirements, then that title’s Proton test | These checks act on the game without disturbing the rest of the Deck. | That a crash proves Unsupported status or that Proton guarantees a fix. |
| Several games fail | SteamOS update, restart, and third-party app isolation | The shared system environment is a more relevant first suspect than one game’s files. | That reinstalling every game is necessary. |
| Steam login, download, or connection error | Steam status and another available Wi-Fi band | The symptom is network-dependent. | That network changes can repair an offline launch crash. |
| “Not available on your current platform” | Supported OS and hardware requirements | The message identifies a platform-support condition. | That ordinary file repair or a factory reset changes the publisher’s requirements. |
| Deck-wide instability after safe checks | SteamOS support and then carefully selected recovery | Recovery acts on the operating system, which is appropriate only after less destructive isolation. | That re-imaging is routine game troubleshooting. |
7. Use SteamOS recovery only at the end
Recovery actions have very different effects. Back up important local saves, screenshots, configuration files, and other data before choosing any option. Cloud synchronization is not a substitute for checking local files that have not uploaded.
| Recovery choice | Effect on data | When it belongs in the process |
|---|---|---|
| SteamOS rollback | Returns the operating system to an earlier available state; the exact effect depends on the rollback option shown. | When a recent SteamOS change appears to have caused system-wide trouble and ordinary updates or restarts have not helped. |
| Factory reset | Clears local data. | Only after backups and only when a clean user state is justified. |
| Erase local data | Removes the selected local user data; review Steam’s confirmation screen carefully. | When the problem is tied to damaged local state and less destructive steps failed. |
| Repair SteamOS | Reinstalls the operating system while attempting to preserve games and personal content. | For an operating-system problem when preserving existing content is important. Preservation is an attempt, not an absolute guarantee, so maintain backups. |
| Re-image the Deck | Wipes user information, installed games, applications, and operating systems. | As a last-resort clean installation for serious system failure, never as a routine response to one incompatible game. |
Steam Support’s SteamOS Installation and Repair guide describes these choices and their effects. Creating the recovery media requires a USB key with at least 8 GB of capacity. That is a recovery-equipment requirement, not a statistic about game compatibility.
- Confirm that updates, restart, third-party-app isolation, file verification, requirements checks, and an appropriate Proton test have all been completed.
- Back up local data and verify that you understand whether the selected option preserves, clears, or wipes it.
- Prepare the recovery USB according to Steam’s current instructions, using at least 8 GB.
- Choose Repair SteamOS before destructive options when the goal is to reinstall the operating system while attempting to preserve content.
- Use factory reset or re-imaging only after accepting the data loss described on the confirmation screen.
- After recovery, install updates, restart, and test the affected game before reinstalling third-party Desktop Mode software.
If the symptoms point to a separate physical hardware fault, Steam’s support wizard links to parts and repair guides from iFixit: Steam Deck support wizard. Hardware repair is outside ordinary compatibility troubleshooting; pursue it only when the evidence indicates a hardware problem.

8. A compact decision checklist
- Record the exact error, the point at which launch stops, and whether one title or the whole Deck is affected.
- Read the Store page’s Steam Deck Compatibility label and unmet criteria.
- Install SteamOS updates and restart.
- Close third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode and retest.
- For a single Steam game, verify file integrity and inspect OS and hardware requirements.
- For a Windows game, test Properties > Compatibility > Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool with the latest Proton version.
- Lower graphics settings only when the symptom is performance-related.
- Use Steam status and another Wi-Fi band only for login, download, or connection symptoms.
- Back up data before any reset, erase, repair, rollback, or re-image operation.
- Reserve re-imaging for serious system failure, not for an isolated game-rating limitation.
What a successful diagnosis looks like
You should be able to state which category best explains the result: a compatibility-label limitation, a title-specific installation or requirement problem, a Proton configuration issue, a network or service condition, or a broader SteamOS instability. Some tests will end with “not supported” or “not yet established,” rather than a fix. That is still useful: it prevents destructive recovery steps from being applied to a game whose requirements the Deck cannot meet.
