This guide explains how to choose a PC storefront, install and launch the game, set expectations for performance, and work through Bethesda’s official fixes if it will not start.

Quick checklist before you install
- Use a 64-bit Windows PC that meets at least the minimum CPU, GPU and memory specifications.
- Install to an SSD, not a hard-disk drive, with at least 125 GB free before starting the download.
- Choose either the Steam route or the Xbox App/Microsoft Store route. Bethesda lists both as PC options.
- Allow extra free space beyond the published 125 GB if Windows or other applications also use that drive.
- After installation, launch from the storefront library and adjust the in-game graphics settings for your hardware.
Can your PC run Oblivion Remastered?
The official Steam listing gives separate minimum and recommended configurations. These are product requirements, not independent frame-rate tests: the listing says performance scales with better hardware but does not promise a particular resolution or frame rate for either tier.

Meeting the minimum means the computer is within the publisher’s supported starting point; it is not a guarantee of a particular visual preset or smoothness level. The recommended tier doubles the memory to 32 GB and moves to substantially faster processor and graphics classes, which gives the game more headroom for demanding settings.

Operating-system check
The minimum entry is specifically 64-bit Windows 10 version 21H1, identified by build number 10.0.19043. A 32-bit installation does not meet that requirement. The recommended entry supports 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 with updates. If Windows is older than the stated minimum, update it before troubleshooting the game; otherwise a launch failure may be an operating-system problem rather than a broken installation.
Processor and graphics checks
Compare the exact processor and graphics-card models in your PC with the table, rather than relying on a generic label such as “gaming computer.” A laptop and desktop may use similar model names with different power limits, and integrated graphics should not be assumed to match a discrete Radeon RX 5700 or GeForce 1070 Ti. If your hardware falls between the minimum and recommended tiers, use the in-game settings to find a practical balance instead of assuming the recommended experience.
Memory, DirectX and storage
Sixteen gigabytes of RAM is the published floor; 32 GB is the recommended amount. The listing requires DirectX 12 in both tiers. Most importantly, the game requires an SSD and 125 GB of available storage. “Available” means free space at the time of installation, not the drive’s advertised capacity. A 125 GB drive that already contains Windows, applications or other games will not have enough room. Leave additional headroom for the operating system and normal updates.

Choose where to get the PC version
Bethesda’s supported-platforms information identifies PC availability through Steam and the Xbox App/Microsoft Store. Bethesda’s launch announcement also identifies PC and Game Pass availability. Catalog access, editions, subscription eligibility and prices can vary by country and can change, so check the live store page for your account and region before committing.
Steam
Steam is the route documented by the official product listing that contains the detailed PC requirements. It is the straightforward choice if your existing PC library and installation management are already in Steam. Sign in to the account that should own or access the game, open the listing, and complete the purchase or other access step shown for your region.
Xbox App and Microsoft Store
The Xbox App for PC and Microsoft Store are the other documented installation path. This route can be appropriate when you are using a qualifying Game Pass entitlement or prefer Microsoft’s PC library. The exact availability and subscription terms are account- and region-dependent; confirm them in the current Xbox or Microsoft Store listing rather than relying on an old price or plan description.

Install the game step by step
- Confirm the hardware. Check Windows edition and build, CPU, GPU, RAM, DirectX support and free SSD space against the table above. Resolve any shortfall before downloading.
- Prepare the destination SSD. Select a drive with at least 125 GB free. Because 125 GB is the published requirement rather than a promise that no temporary space will be used, keeping additional free space is prudent.
- Open your chosen storefront. Start Steam or the Xbox App/Microsoft Store and sign in to the account that owns the game or has the relevant access entitlement.
- Find the game in your library or store. Select The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and choose the install or download action presented by the current client. Bethesda’s support material confirms the storefront routes but does not promise that a particular button label or screen order will remain unchanged.
- Select the SSD location. If the client offers more than one library or drive, choose the prepared SSD and verify the estimated free-space requirement before confirming.
- Wait for the download and installation to finish. Do not launch while the client still reports that files are downloading, installing or being verified. A complete install gives the storefront a chance to validate all files.
- Launch from the same library. Use the installed game’s launch control in Steam or the Xbox App/Microsoft Store. The first start can take longer than later launches while the game prepares its data.
Configure graphics after the first launch
Bethesda documents adjustable in-game graphics options in its graphics-settings support article. Open the game’s settings menu after reaching the main menu and change options incrementally. Start with the preset or values that your hardware can reasonably sustain, then adjust individual quality settings if you want a different balance between image quality and responsiveness.

A sensible adjustment order
- Apply a baseline preset rather than changing every option at once.
- Play a short, repeatable section and watch for stutter, unusually long pauses or visual problems.
- Lower the most demanding quality options first if performance is unsatisfactory, changing one group at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.
- Keep a note of the settings that work. If a later change causes trouble, you can return to the known-good configuration.
The published requirements do not include frame-rate targets, resolution guarantees or benchmark results. Treat settings as a personal calibration exercise for your particular processor, graphics card, memory configuration and display rather than as a promise that a minimum-specification PC will deliver a fixed number of frames per second.
What is included in the remastered edition?
The Steam listing describes Oblivion Remastered as a single-player role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and Virtuos. It states that the remaster includes the Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine story expansions, along with additional downloadable content. That makes the PC installation more than the original base campaign alone, although the exact store edition, entitlement and download presentation can depend on the storefront you use.

Bethesda’s official PC launch-troubleshooting article starts with a short sequence. Follow it in order, because each step rules out a different class of problem.
- Check the minimum requirements again. Confirm the operating-system version, CPU, GPU, RAM, DirectX 12 support and SSD space. A machine that is below the published minimum is not a candidate for file-repair fixes alone.
- Close and reopen the storefront. Fully exit Steam or the Xbox App for PC rather than leaving it running in the background, then start it again and retry the launch.
- Restart the computer. A complete restart clears temporary client and operating-system states that can survive simply closing the game window.
- Remove mods temporarily. If you installed modifications, return the game to an unmodified state and test again. A launch problem that disappears without mods points to compatibility or load-order work rather than the base installation.
- Repair or verify the game files. Use the repair, verification or equivalent file-checking function offered by your storefront. The wording and location of that command can change between client versions, so use the current client interface.
- Retry after each change. Launch again after a completed repair or restart. This keeps the cause identifiable and avoids stacking several untested changes.
If those steps do not resolve the issue, consult the current Bethesda support article for any additional branch that matches your storefront and symptom. Support instructions can be updated, so the live article is more reliable than a copied list of old menu names.

When to try administrator mode
Bethesda provides a separate guide, Run the game as administrator on PC, with instructions for administrator launching and the relevant default installation locations for the Xbox App/Microsoft Store and Steam versions. Use that procedure only when troubleshooting calls for it or support directs you to it. Administrator mode is not a routine installation requirement and should not be the first step for every player.
The same support article distinguishes the two storefront paths, so select the instructions that match where you installed the game. If you later move the installation to another library, re-check the path shown by your current client instead of assuming the default location still applies.
Storage and installation problems
The installer says there is not enough space
Recheck the free space on the exact SSD selected in the install dialog. The requirement is 125 GB available, not 125 GB of total drive capacity. Delete or move files, choose another SSD with sufficient room, or install a larger SSD before trying again. Do not assume that moving the game to a hard drive solves the issue: the official listing says an SSD is required.
The download stops or appears incomplete
Wait for the storefront to finish any queued download, installation or file-verification phase. Then restart the client and computer as Bethesda recommends for launch problems and retry. If the client offers a repair or verification command, run it after the restart so damaged or missing files can be reacquired.
Should you buy an SSD for this game?
If your PC lacks an SSD or has less than 125 GB free on one, storage is a prerequisite rather than an optional performance accessory. The requirement does not establish that a particular SSD model increases frame rate, so choose capacity and compatibility based on the published 125 GB requirement and your wider PC needs, not on an unverified FPS promise.
Starting the adventure
Bethesda’s beginner guide, published April 22, 2025, offers orientation for new players and includes advice from Al Nanes, Design Director at Bethesda Game Studios. Its central message is that exploration can open different paths: as Nanes puts it, “You’ll probably find something that will carry your story in a new direction.” Read the guide if you want introductory direction after the technical installation is complete, but let the game’s own menus and current settings screen take precedence over screenshots or instructions written for an earlier update.

What the requirements do—and do not—tell you
- They do tell you: the supported Windows baseline, named processor and graphics classes, memory targets, DirectX version, SSD requirement and minimum available storage.
- They do not tell you: a guaranteed frame rate, a guaranteed resolution, exact graphics presets for every intermediate configuration, or how a particular laptop will perform.

A clean order for your first session
- Verify the PC and free SSD space.
- Choose Steam or the Xbox App/Microsoft Store after checking current regional access.
- Install through that storefront’s library.
- Launch without mods so the base installation can be tested.
- Open graphics settings and tune gradually.
- If the game fails to start, follow Bethesda’s requirements, storefront-restart, computer-restart, mod-removal and file-repair sequence.
- Use administrator mode only if the dedicated Bethesda instructions or a support step calls for it.
