Best DRM-Free PC Game Stores for Permanent Ownership

GOG is the clearest default for buying DRM-free PC games you can keep and install offline. Its policy says buyers are not locked out of paid titles, and its developer documentation describes Galaxy as optional while offline installers are hosted on GOG.com. For indie and experimental work, itch.io is the broadest alternative because it does not impose platform DRM and delivers files as creators upload them. FireFlower Games offers a smaller, curated DRM-free catalog with Windows, Mac, and Linux downloads. Humble can provide standalone installers, but only for titles whose individual listings explicitly say so.

Permanent ownership still requires your own preservation work. Download the installer, patches, manuals, soundtracks, and bonus files while they are available; keep at least two copies under your control; and test whether the game depends on a launcher, an online server, multiplayer service, or third-party component. DRM-free removes activation restrictions, but it cannot keep a multiplayer service running or guarantee compatibility with every future operating system.

Which DRM-free store should you use?

Store Best for What the store establishes What to check on each title
GOG Broad, store-wide DRM-free buying and classic-PC preservation GOG says you will not be locked out of titles you paid for or repeatedly asked to prove ownership. Galaxy is optional, and offline installers are hosted on GOG.com. Individual game features, especially multiplayer, online-service, launcher, and operating-system requirements.
itch.io Indie, experimental, and creator-led releases itch.io says it does not impose platform DRM and lets users download files exactly as the creator uploaded them. Whether the creator’s files include a complete offline build and whether the project needs networking or another platform-specific component.
FireFlower Games A curated, story-rich catalog across several desktop systems FireFlower describes itself as a curated DRM-free store for Windows, Mac, and Linux; purchased games have download links for those systems. The operating-system download you need and any game-specific online or dependency requirements.
Humble Store Deals and selected games that include standalone downloads Some purchases include standalone DRM-free installers, while others provide a Steam key or another format. The product page’s exact delivery method. Treat a Steam key as separate from a DRM-free installer.

If you want one starting point, choose GOG. Choose itch.io when the game’s creator and unusual, small-scale releases matter more than a uniform store catalog. Choose FireFlower when curation and multi-platform downloads are the priority. Use Humble only after confirming that the specific listing includes files you can run without a platform account.

What “permanent ownership” means for a PC game

In practical terms, permanent ownership means you can retain the files needed to install and use a purchased game without an activation check controlled by the store. The useful test is not whether a checkout page uses the word “ownership”; it is whether you can obtain a standalone installer, preserve it, and run it later without being forced through a launcher or repeated proof-of-purchase prompt.

DRM-free removes an activation barrier

Digital rights management can require a client, a product key, or an internet check before a game starts. A genuinely DRM-free release removes that store-controlled activation step. GOG’s own wording is direct: “you won’t be locked out of titles you paid for, or constantly asked to prove you own them – this is DRM-free gaming.” That policy is why GOG is the most straightforward default for this use case.

It does not preserve every service around the game

A game can be DRM-free and still contain features that rely on something outside the installer. Online multiplayer may need a live server. A launcher may be optional for starting the game but still provide updates or social features. A title may also depend on an operating-system component or another platform-specific service. Before buying, separate the part you can archive—the game’s files—from services that a publisher or community operates elsewhere.

Ownership requires a local copy

An account library is convenient, but it is not the same as an archive you control. The preservation approach is simple: download the installer and related files, copy them to storage you control, and keep another copy in a different place. If you have never installed the game from your archive, you do not yet know whether the saved package is complete or usable.

GOG: the strongest all-purpose choice

GOG combines a broad DRM-free catalog with a clearly documented offline path. Its developer documentation calls GOG GALAXY “the optional client to install & update GOG games.” That distinction matters: you can use Galaxy for convenience, but the ownership model does not depend on keeping the client installed.

Why GOG fits preservation

  • GOG states that buyers will not be locked out of paid titles or repeatedly asked to prove ownership.
  • Offline installers are hosted on GOG.com, so you can download an installable package rather than relying solely on a launcher library.
  • The optional client can simplify installation and updates without becoming a requirement for the basic DRM-free purchase.

For a preservation-minded buyer, download the offline installer from the game’s account page instead of assuming that a client-managed installation is enough. Keep every patch, manual, soundtrack, and bonus file supplied with the purchase. A later patch may fix compatibility, while an earlier installer may be valuable if a future update changes behavior.

What GOG does not promise

The store-wide DRM-free policy does not turn every feature into an offline feature. Read the individual game’s feature notes for multiplayer, online services, and other dependencies. If the part you care about is competitive or cooperative play, record that requirement alongside the installer so your archive does not imply that the service itself is permanent.

itch.io: the flexible indie and experimental option

itch.io is particularly useful when you are looking for small, experimental, or creator-led releases that may not appear in a conventional catalog. Its Creator FAQ answers the DRM question plainly: “No. itch.io lets users download the games exactly as you uploaded them.” That means the platform does not add a store-level DRM wrapper to the creator’s files.

Why the upload model matters

Because creators control what they upload, releases can vary widely. One project may provide a ready-to-run offline build; another may include a framework, a patch, or instructions that assume a particular environment. The absence of platform DRM tells you how itch.io delivers the files, not what every creator’s package contains.

Questions to answer before buying

  • Does the project page offer a complete build for your operating system?
  • Are there separate downloads for a demo, an update, or the full game?
  • Does the creator describe network access, an account, or another service as a requirement?
  • Are installation instructions or dependencies included with the download?

Save the creator’s readme and release notes with the game files. Those notes may explain launch options, required components, or which download is the current full release. If a project is updated frequently, preserve the version you bought as well as later updates so you can identify which package worked with your archive.

FireFlower Games: curated DRM-free downloads for three desktop systems

FireFlower Games positions itself as “a carefully curated, DRM-free digital game store for Windows, Mac, and Linux, based in Malmö, Sweden.” Its appeal is narrower than a huge general catalog: discovery is organized around a selected, story-rich range rather than every possible release.

What you receive

After purchase, FireFlower provides download links for the supported systems. Select the Windows, Mac, or Linux package that matches the computer you intend to use, and save the other platform’s link or files if your household uses more than one system. Keeping the platform labels in your archive prevents confusion later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to evaluate a FireFlower listing

Read the game’s own description for online functions and technical requirements. “DRM-free” describes the purchase and download model; it does not establish that every mode works without a network connection. Preserve any supplied manuals or notes, because a curated store can still carry games with different launch procedures.

Humble Store: verify the individual product, not the store name

Humble is useful for discounts and bundles, but its DRM-free status is title-specific. A product page may offer a standalone installer, a Steam key, or another delivery method. Those are not interchangeable for permanent offline use: a Steam key places the entitlement in another platform’s account, while a standalone installer is a file you can archive and run according to that game’s own requirements.

A safe Humble checkout check

  1. Open the exact product page for the game you want.
  2. Look for an explicit standalone or DRM-free download description.
  3. Confirm that the download is not listed only as a Steam key.
  4. After purchase, download the installer immediately and verify that the file appears in your library alongside any key.

If the listing does not clearly identify a standalone download, treat the DRM-free status as unconfirmed and choose a listing that does. Do not infer it from the store’s other products or from a bundle that contains mixed delivery methods.

The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.

How to check a listing before you pay

A few minutes of inspection prevents most preservation mistakes. Use this checklist on the individual game page, regardless of the store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Delivery wording: Look for “DRM-free,” “standalone installer,” or an equivalent direct-download description. A client key alone is not evidence of a DRM-free copy.
  • Platform coverage: Record whether the package is for Windows, Mac, Linux, or more than one of them.
  • Offline scope: Distinguish an offline-capable single-player game from online multiplayer, cloud features, or a service-backed mode.
  • Launcher role: Determine whether a launcher is optional, required only for updates, or required to start the game.
  • Included materials: Note whether the purchase includes patches, manuals, soundtracks, or other bonus files worth archiving.
  • Version information: Save the release notes or readme that identifies the package you downloaded.

Write these findings in a small text file beside the installer. Your future self should be able to tell what the package is, which operating system it targets, and which features need a live service without reopening the store page.

Preservation workflow: download, duplicate, and test

Use this sequence for every purchase you intend to keep for years.

  1. Buy from a qualifying listing. Select a page that explicitly states DRM-free or provides a standalone installer. For Humble, verify the exact product rather than relying on the store’s general reputation.
  2. Download all available files. Get the main installer, patches, manuals, soundtracks, and bonus files. Do this while the purchase and its downloads are available.
  3. Create a clear archive folder. Use the game title and platform in the folder name, then keep the installer and its documentation together. Preserve the original filenames when possible.
  4. Copy the archive to external storage. An external hard drive or other storage you control gives you a copy independent of the store account and the computer where you bought the game.
  5. Make a second copy. Keep another copy in a different physical location or on another storage device. Two copies reduce the chance that one failed device destroys the archive.
  6. Record requirements. Note the operating system, dependencies, launch procedure, and whether multiplayer or another feature needs a live service.
  7. Test an installation. Install from the saved package, ideally on a separate machine or after confirming that the installer does not need the store client. Start the game and check the modes you care about.
  8. Recheck periodically. Inspect both copies from time to time and replace a failing drive or unreadable file before it becomes your only copy.

This workflow turns a purchase into a usable personal archive. Downloading once but never duplicating or testing the files leaves the most important part—the ability to restore the game—unverified.

Testing offline behavior correctly

Testing should answer a narrow question: can the preserved package install and start under the conditions you expect? Disconnect the computer from the network only after the installer is available locally. Run the installer, launch the game, and try the single-player or offline mode you intend to preserve. If startup fails, reconnect and determine whether the failure came from a missing dependency, an update step, or an online feature rather than from DRM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate installation from service access

A game may install and start offline while its multiplayer menu, leaderboards, cloud saves, or matchmaking do not work. Record those results separately. “Installs offline” is a useful archive property; “all features remain available forever” is not a promise any DRM-free store can make about a service it does not operate.

Keep the evidence with the archive

Add a short note with the date of your test, the operating system used, and which modes started without a network connection. This is your own practical record, not a guarantee for every future computer. It helps you distinguish a damaged archive from a later compatibility change.

Common pitfalls and how to recover

You saved only a launcher installation

Symptom: The game is visible in a client library, but no standalone installer is in your archive.

Recovery: Return to the store account and download the listed offline installer or direct files. On GOG, Galaxy is optional, so look for the hosted offline installer rather than treating the client’s installed folder as your preservation copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You assumed every Humble purchase was DRM-free

Symptom: The receipt provides a Steam key, but you expected an independent installer.

Recovery: Re-read the individual product page and identify the delivery method before buying another copy. A key and a standalone download should be recorded as different kinds of purchase.

The archive contains a game that still needs a service

Symptom: The installer works, but multiplayer or another online mode cannot connect.

Recovery: Mark the service dependency in your archive notes. Keep the offline-capable portions and any documentation; do not describe the online mode as preserved merely because the game files are preserved.

You cannot tell which file is the full release

Choosing by the kind of game you buy

Your priority Most suitable starting point Reason
One dependable default across many genres GOG Its published policy, optional Galaxy client, and hosted offline installers align directly with permanent offline ownership.
Experimental or creator-led indie games itch.io The platform does not impose DRM and delivers creators’ uploaded files, allowing unusual releases to be distributed directly.
Curated narrative games with multi-platform downloads FireFlower Games The store focuses on a selected catalog and identifies Windows, Mac, and Linux downloads after purchase.
A discounted title that may include a direct installer Humble Store Some listings provide standalone DRM-free files, but the product page must be checked individually.

This is a decision order, not a promise that every game on a store has identical technical behavior. The listing-level checks and the preservation workflow remain necessary even when a store is generally DRM-free.

Maintaining an archive over the long term

Keep two independent copies

Use two storage devices or locations rather than treating one external drive as permanent. When you refresh a device, copy the complete game folder—including documentation and bonus files—before retiring the old copy.

Preserve context, not just binaries

A bare installer can be difficult to interpret years later. Keep the purchase record, readme, manual, patch notes, platform label, and your offline-test note together. Context tells you which file to run and which features require a service.

Revisit service dependencies

Online infrastructure can change independently of the installer. During a periodic review, update your notes if a multiplayer service, launcher function, or other external requirement has changed. The local files remain useful even when a network-dependent feature no longer answers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for operating-system changes

Record the operating system for which you tested each package. A DRM-free installer removes a store activation requirement, but it does not ensure that a future operating system supports every older game. Keeping the original package and its documentation gives you the best starting point for compatibility work later.

Bottom line

For most buyers seeking permanent DRM-free PC ownership, start with GOG and download its offline installers instead of relying only on Galaxy. Use itch.io for indie and experimental releases, FireFlower Games for curated Windows, Mac, and Linux downloads, and Humble only when the exact listing confirms a standalone DRM-free package. In every case, permanence comes from the same discipline: save all relevant files, keep two copies, document dependencies, and test what actually works offline.
