For an early magic-focused setup in Avowed, keep the free Grimoire of Elements as your baseline, then choose an early unique grimoire and a wand for the spells and combat style you want. There is no single required wizard weapon pair: Avowed is classless, and you can switch between two weapon builds. The game’s combat is built around mixing weapons and spells.
What counts as a wizard weapon in Avowed?
“Wizard” describes a playstyle, not a locked class. Grimoires provide access to spells, while wands add ranged attacks and can complement your chosen abilities. Xbox Wire’s Avowed Survival Guide describes the classless system, the ability to switch between two weapon builds, and wand-plus-grimoire as one example pairing. That flexibility lets you keep another setup for a different enemy or situation instead of treating one pair as mandatory.
Which early grimoire should you use?
Grimoire of Elements: the free starting baseline
Xbox Wire says you receive the Grimoire of Elements at the start. It is useful for combat and environmental puzzles, so it remains a practical baseline while you look for a unique book—or if its spells already suit your build. The official starter guide presents it as useful beyond a dedicated wizard setup.
Anextli’s Grimoire: an early unique option in Dawnshore
PCGamesN lists Anextli’s Grimoire among Dawnshore weapons and places it at Ivona’s Threshold, on a cliff overlooking the graveyard. Destructoid describes reaching a pyromancer’s body south of Breath’s Gateway; the accounts appear to point to the same broad encounter. If those landmark names do not match your map, check the local area around the graveyard and Breath’s Gateway rather than relying on one label alone.

PCGamesN lists Fan of Flames and Arcane Veil as available spells, with Grimoire Snap and Missile Salvo unlocking at character levels 5 and 10. It reports a 28% ability-cost reduction and a 15% cooldown reduction. These are guide-reported item details, not independently verified current stats; check the item card in your game before planning around the numbers. PCGamesN’s early-weapons guide and Destructoid’s early-game weapon guide give the location descriptions.
Beothel’s Grimoire: a broad spell selection, with conflicting stats
Beothel’s Grimoire is a reported purchase from Merylin in Paradis’s Market District. The guides list Corrosive Siphon, Arcane Veil, Parasitic Staff, and Blizzard. Den of Geek says it costs 450 Skeyt and reports a 20% ability-cost reduction and 15% cooldown reduction. PCGamesN lists the same four spells but reports a 28% ability-cost reduction and 15% cooldown reduction. Because the published cost-reduction figures conflict, do not assume either is definitive; check the current item card for the price and bonuses before spending. Den of Geek’s early-weapons guide and PCGamesN’s guide provide the reported details.

Is Minoletta’s Conduit a good early wand?
Den of Geek recommends Minoletta’s Conduit as an early wand and places it for sale at Porrya & Vellino in Fior Mes Iverno for 3,780 Skeyt. The guide reports that Charged Missile adds 5% attack damage and 30% maximum wand range, while Shocking Lash adds 10% shock damage. Treat the price and effects as guide-reported details and verify the item card in your current game version. A Game8 search-result summary also places the wand among Emerald Stair options for a Wizard Build (2.0 Update), but that page was not directly opened, so it does not independently confirm the details above. Den of Geek is the source for the purchase and effects.
How to choose your early wizard weapons
- Start with spell access. Compare the abilities each grimoire offers, including utility or resource-restoring effects. Choose the book whose spells fit the enemies and situations you expect to face.
- Compare costs and cooldowns cautiously. Those bonuses can change how often you cast, but published figures for Beothel’s Grimoire disagree. Confirm the numbers on the item card rather than basing a purchase on one guide.
- Use the wand to complement your spells. Consider its attack range and damage type alongside your spell choices; Minoletta’s Conduit’s reported range and shock effects may matter more to some setups than to others.
- Weigh acquisition against your resources. Anextli’s Grimoire is associated with an encounter in Dawnshore, while Beothel’s Grimoire and Minoletta’s Conduit are reported merchant purchases. PCGamesN notes that early upgrade materials are scarce and that unique weapons can be upgraded through rarity tiers, so consider whether you can afford to improve a new item as well as obtain it. PCGamesN’s guide covers early weapon upgrades.
- Keep a second build available. Since Avowed lets you switch between two weapon builds, you can pair a grimoire and wand for one situation and retain a different combination for another. Xbox Wire’s starter guide describes the build-switching system.
Which early wizard weapon pair is best?
There is no sourced comparison that establishes one best pair for every build. Keep the Grimoire of Elements if it meets your needs; consider Anextli’s Grimoire for its reported Dawnshore encounter and spell unlocks, or Beothel’s for its reported broader spell selection. Add a wand whose range and damage effects suit how you fight, and verify volatile item details in-game before committing resources. The guides cited here were published in February 2025, and their item figures should not be treated as a current official database.
