To host a FiveM server in 2026, run Cfx.re’s FXServer on a Windows or Linux machine, or rent managed game-server hosting. The supported beginner workflow uses txAdmin: obtain a free Cfx Portal registration key, launch the recommended FXServer artifact, complete the browser setup, deploy the CFX Default FiveM recipe, and expose the game endpoint to players.
The practical choice is straightforward. Managed hosting is fastest because the provider handles the operating system and network plumbing. Self-hosting gives you control over files, firewall rules, backups, and update timing, but you become responsible for every part of that operation.

What a FiveM server actually consists of
A FiveM server is not a separate game executable that players run on your computer. It is an instance of FXServer, Cfx.re’s platform server. Players connect to that process through the FiveM client. txAdmin is included with the server artifacts and supplies the web panel used to create, configure, start, monitor, and stop an instance.
You need three things before installation:
- A Windows or Linux host with terminal or startup access, or a managed FiveM hosting account.
- A Cfx.re account and a server registration key created in the Cfx Portal.
- A writable deployment directory. A framework or recipe may also require database connection details.
The simplest first deployment is the CFX Default FiveM recipe. Framework-based servers can be added later, after you understand the basic server, endpoint, and resource layout.

Choose where to run the server

Cfx.re describes a game-server hosting provider as the fastest and easiest way to set up a FiveM server. Its official hosting page points readers to authorized hosting partners and says setup can be completed in under five minutes through one of those partners. Check the current Platform License Agreement and the provider’s terms, region coverage, storage policy, and backup policy before paying.
If you would rather skip the system administration, Godlike.Host offers FiveM server hosting with a Pterodactyl-based game panel, free DDoS protection, and up to three free backups a day with restore. It is not on Cfx.re’s list of authorized FiveM hosts (fivem.net, 10 Oct 2026), so weigh that alongside the Platform License Agreement before you pay.
Prepare the account, host, and deployment directory
Create the Cfx.re account and registration key
Sign in to the Cfx Portal and create a server registration key before launching the setup wizard. The key authorizes the server registration; it is not a substitute for the txAdmin password. Treat it as a secret: do not paste it into public chat, screenshots, tickets, or a repository.

Use a machine that can stay online for the hours you expect players to connect. You need terminal or startup access, permission to write to the chosen server directory, and control of the host or cloud firewall. If your selected framework uses a database, collect its connection details now. Do not deploy a new recipe into a directory that contains another live server.

Decide on a clean directory
Create an empty deployment folder for the first server. txAdmin recipes can write files and execute database queries. A clean directory makes it possible to inspect exactly what the recipe creates and avoids overwriting resources, configuration, or data from another installation.
Install with the txAdmin beginner workflow
The following sequence applies to a direct Windows or Linux installation. A managed host may present the same txAdmin screens after it has provisioned FXServer for you.
- Download a recommended FXServer artifact. Use the current recommended artifact from Cfx.re’s official server setup documentation. Choose the Windows or Linux build that matches your host.
- Extract it to a writable folder. Keep the artifact files together and place them somewhere your server account can read and write.
- Launch the server without a pre-existing exec command. On Windows, run
FXServer.exe. On Linux, run./run.sh. For the initial txAdmin flow, do not start with+exec server.cfg; txAdmin creates and selects the configuration during setup. - Read the console output. FXServer prints a local txAdmin address and a one-time setup PIN. Keep the PIN private while the first administrator is being linked.
- Open the txAdmin panel. The default panel port is TCP
40120, normally reachable locally athttp://localhost:40120. If the console prints a different address or port, use that value. - Enter the setup PIN. This proves that the browser session belongs to the process you just launched. Never publish the PIN or leave a screenshot of it in a public channel.
- Link the owner’s Cfx.re account. Use the account that should retain administrative ownership. Then create the txAdmin password and save the backup password somewhere protected; losing both the active and backup credentials can make recovery difficult.
- Choose a new-server recipe. Select the option for a new server and choose an empty deployment directory. For a first installation, select Popular Recipes, then CFX Default FiveM.
- Enter the server identity and key. Provide a server name and paste the Cfx Portal registration key into the requested field. A recipe that supports a database will request its connection details here or in a later task.
- Review every recipe task before deploying. Recipes may create or replace files and may run database queries. Confirm the target directory, read cleanup actions, and make sure the database is disposable or backed up before allowing queries to run.
- Save and run the server. txAdmin writes the configuration and starts the selected resources. Watch the live console rather than assuming that a successful web-panel login means the game server is ready.
- Inspect the generated configuration. Review
server.cfg, endpoint declarations, resource entries, the server name, and registration settings. Correct missing resources, malformed configuration, and database errors before inviting players.
Windows and Linux: which path should you use?
Windows
Windows is often the most approachable self-hosting route because the official flow starts with FXServer.exe and is easy to launch from an ordinary desktop or Windows server session. You still need to keep the process running, allow the required traffic through Windows Firewall and any cloud firewall, and arrange backups and automatic restart behavior yourself. A desktop session that closes when you log out is not a reliable production arrangement unless you have separately configured a service or startup method.

Linux uses the artifact’s ./run.sh launcher. You should be comfortable changing into the artifact directory, checking file permissions, reading console output, and using your distribution’s service or process-management tools. The same txAdmin browser flow follows after the script starts. Linux does not remove the need for a host firewall, cloud firewall, backups, or controlled updates; it simply gives you a more terminal-oriented way to manage them.

Ports, endpoints, and external access

Do not confuse these tests. A reachable txAdmin page does not prove that players can connect to the game server. Configure the endpoint shown in the generated configuration, open only the paths required by your topology, and apply the rule consistently at every layer: the operating-system firewall, the cloud provider’s firewall or security group, and any router or NAT rule used for a home connection.
Verify from a different network
Test the player endpoint from outside the host’s local network. A local browser can reach localhost:40120 even when an external firewall blocks the machine. Use the server’s public address and the configured game port from a separate connection, then check the live txAdmin console for incoming attempts. If the panel works but players cannot join, investigate the game endpoint, firewall, NAT, and the host’s public address rather than reinstalling txAdmin.
Protect the administration surface
The txAdmin panel is an administrative control plane, not a public game endpoint. Avoid exposing it more broadly than necessary, use a strong unique password, and never disclose the initial PIN, backup password, or registration key. If your provider supplies a private management URL or access control, use it instead of opening the panel to the entire internet.
Recipes, resources, frameworks, and databases
A recipe is a deployment plan that tells txAdmin which files to download or create and which setup actions to perform. The CFX Default FiveM recipe is the least complicated starting point because it avoids the additional database and framework decisions that accompany role-play stacks.

When a database is involved
Framework recipes may request database credentials and execute SQL during deployment. Inspect the recipe’s tasks before clicking deploy. Confirm which database is targeted, whether cleanup statements are present, and whether you have a backup. Never point an untested recipe at a production database simply because the connection details are available.
Adding a framework
Frameworks such as ESX, QBCore, or Qbox have their own artifact, recipe, resource, and database requirements. Verify those requirements against the framework’s current documentation before changing the working default server. Keep the initial CFX Default installation intact or back it up so you have a known-good baseline when a framework resource fails to start.
Read resource errors literally
After deployment, missing-resource messages, invalid configuration entries, and database connection errors are more useful than a generic “server is offline” assumption. Identify the first error in the console, check the named resource or setting, fix one dependency at a time, and restart through txAdmin. Adding unrelated resources before the base server starts cleanly makes the cause harder to isolate.

Choose managed hosting when time, convenience, and a packaged network setup matter more than machine-level control. Choose self-hosting when you need direct access to files, firewall policy, backups, or update timing and are prepared to maintain them. Neither option removes the need to protect credentials and review the Platform License Agreement.

Player capacity and licensing
Cfx.re’s hosting-provider guidance states that using more than 48 slots requires FiveM Element Club Argentum or above. Treat 48 as the current documented threshold, not a permanent guarantee: account terms and product requirements can change, so confirm the entitlement in the Cfx Portal before advertising a higher-capacity server. A slot allowance also does not solve CPU, memory, network, resource, or database bottlenecks; those depend on the host and the resources you run.
Security and maintenance baseline
- Use separate, strong credentials for the Cfx.re account, txAdmin, the host, and any database.
- Keep the registration key, setup PIN, and backup password out of public tickets, chat, screenshots, and source repositories.
- Open only required network paths, and review both host-level and cloud-level firewall rules after every topology change.
- Back up
server.cfg, resource configuration, deployment data, and databases before changing recipes or frameworks. - Keep a copy of the previously working artifact and configuration so an update can be reversed if a resource or dependency breaks.
- Watch txAdmin’s live console after every deployment and restart; address the first error rather than ignoring a cascade of later messages.
- Test a restore, not merely a backup job. A backup that cannot be downloaded or imported is not a recovery plan.
- Document who owns the Cfx.re account and where the backup password is stored so another trusted administrator can recover the server.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The txAdmin page does not open
Confirm that FXServer is still running and read the console for the actual panel address and port. On the same machine, try the printed local address. If local access works but remote access fails, inspect the host and cloud firewall rather than changing the recipe. If the process exits, correct the first startup error and relaunch the artifact.
The panel opens, but players cannot connect
Check the generated endpoint and the game port, normally 30120. Verify host, cloud, and router rules and test from a separate network. A successful connection to TCP 40120 only demonstrates panel reachability; it says nothing about the player endpoint.
The recipe fails while writing files
Confirm that the deployment directory is writable and empty or intentionally prepared. Stop any server using that directory, remove partial files only after checking whether they contain data you need, and redeploy into a clean location. Review recipe cleanup tasks before trying again.
The console reports database errors
Check the database host, port, user, password, database name, and permissions supplied to the recipe. Confirm that the database service is online and that the account can run the required queries. If this is a new framework deployment, restore the database to a known state and rerun only after reading the recipe’s SQL steps.
A resource is missing or will not start
Read the named resource and dependency in the console, verify that the resource exists in the expected directory, and inspect its configuration. Start with the base recipe, then add one resource or framework component at a time so you can identify the change that introduced the failure.
Pre-launch checklist
- FXServer starts from the current recommended artifact for your operating system.
- The owner’s Cfx.re account is linked in txAdmin and the registration key is stored privately.
- The txAdmin password and backup password are recorded in a secure location.
- The server uses a clean, writable deployment directory.
- The chosen recipe’s file and database tasks have been reviewed.

40120is reachable only as intended for administration, while the game endpoint, typically30120, is reachable from a separate network. - The live console shows no unresolved startup, resource, configuration, or database errors.
- Backups exist and you know how to restore them.
- If you plan more than 48 slots, the Cfx Portal account has the required FiveM Element Club Argentum or higher entitlement.
Bottom line
For most first-time administrators, start with txAdmin and the CFX Default FiveM recipe on a managed host or a simple Windows machine. Once the base server is reachable and backed up, add a framework or database deliberately. Self-hosting is entirely viable, but it is a commitment to operate the host, firewall, credentials, updates, and recovery process—not just to launch FXServer once.
