Coolify is an open-source, self-hostable platform for deploying and managing applications, databases, and other services on servers you control. It provides a platform-as-a-service control plane—handling builds, deployments, domains, HTTPS, health checks, and routine operations—while Docker on your connected servers runs the actual workloads.

That makes Coolify a practical middle ground between running every container by hand and handing your infrastructure to a fully managed platform. You choose the servers and retain control of where data and workloads live; in return, you remain responsible for capacity, security, backups, updates, and availability.

What Coolify does

Coolify gives a web-based control plane for deploying software to infrastructure you provide. You connect one or more servers to a Coolify instance over SSH, then define applications, databases, and services in the interface. Coolify coordinates the deployment process, but Docker on the selected server creates and runs the containers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The project describes itself as an open-source, self-hostable platform for deploying and managing applications, databases, and services on servers you control. That distinction matters: Coolify is not a hosting company that supplies compute for your workloads. It is the layer that organizes deployments on servers you own or rent.

Where the control plane and traffic live

The Coolify server stores configuration and sends deployment instructions to connected servers through SSH. The connected server runs Docker workloads. For an HTTP resource, a request goes to the reverse proxy on the server running that resource; the Coolify control plane does not relay your application traffic. Keeping the control plane out of the request path avoids turning it into a proxy bottleneck, but it also means the resource server and its network still need to be available.

This separation is useful when you want the management interface in one location and workloads in another. For example, a team could keep a control-plane host in a secure administration environment while placing a public API on a server selected for its region or network capacity. The separation does not create redundancy by itself: losing the workload host still takes that application’s endpoint offline.

Why that is useful

  • You can keep a game API, leaderboard database, or community service on infrastructure selected for its location, storage, or network characteristics.
  • You can manage several servers from one interface instead of maintaining separate, ad-hoc deployment scripts for each one.
  • You can deploy conventional web applications alongside databases and Docker-compatible services.
  • You are not required to package every workload as a platform-specific buildpack application.
  • You can move a containerized workload between connected servers when your capacity or placement needs change, subject to its storage and networking design.

How a Coolify deployment works

  1. Install or access Coolify. You run the control plane on a supported server, or choose the managed Coolify Cloud control plane.
  2. Connect a workload server. Coolify uses SSH to reach a VPS, bare-metal machine, Raspberry Pi, or another server that accepts SSH connections.
  3. Select a source. An application can come from GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Gitea, a Dockerfile, a Git-based Docker Compose definition, or an existing Docker image.
  4. Build or pull the image. Coolify builds the image from your source or pulls the image you specify.
  5. Run the container. Docker starts the application on the connected server, with the configuration and networking defined in Coolify.
  6. Expose and monitor it. You can configure a domain, HTTPS, health checks, and deployment behavior through the control plane.

The same workflow applies whether you are deploying a static site, a full-stack application, an API, or a service that already ships as a container image. Compose support is particularly useful when an application needs several related containers, such as a web process and a worker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing a deployment input

A GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, or Gitea repository keeps deployment tied to source control. A Dockerfile gives you control over the image-building steps. A Git-based Docker Compose definition describes several cooperating containers together, while an existing Docker image is convenient when a build has already been completed elsewhere. The right choice depends on whether you want Coolify to build from source, coordinate a multi-container definition, or simply pull a tested image.

Whichever input you choose, identify configuration values, secrets, persistent volumes, exposed ports, and health-check behavior before deploying. A container that starts successfully can still be misconfigured if its database volume is ephemeral, its required secret is missing, or its health endpoint does not represent real readiness.

What can you run?

Applications and sites

Coolify supports static sites and full-stack applications. A repository can be built through a Dockerfile or a Git-based Docker Compose definition, while a prebuilt image can be deployed without rebuilding on the server. This covers common front ends, back ends, workers, scheduled processes, and game-related services such as matchmaking APIs or score submission endpoints, provided they are compatible with Docker.

Because the workload is a Docker container, you can use the language runtime and system packages your image requires rather than fitting the application into a narrow provider runtime. That flexibility is helpful for background workers and internal tools that do not look like a conventional public website.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Databases

Databases are a first-class use case rather than an add-on that must be hosted elsewhere. The official service examples include PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB, and ClickHouse. You still have to choose storage, backups, replication, and recovery procedures appropriate to the data; a one-click deployment does not remove those operational decisions.

Separate database planning from application deployment. Decide where persistent volumes live, how credentials are stored, how often backups run, where backup copies are kept, and how you will restore to a clean server. For a production database, also consider disk performance, memory pressure, network reachability, and the effect of upgrades on clients.

One-click services

Current Coolify documentation advertises more than 300 one-click open-source service templates (accessed October 15, 2026). Templates can speed up initial deployment by supplying a known container configuration, but you should check the template’s image, persistent volumes, exposed ports, credentials, and upgrade procedure before putting it into production.

“One-click” describes initial setup, not a managed service-level agreement. Read the template notes, confirm which data must persist, change default credentials, and verify that the selected image receives updates. The service still consumes your server’s CPU, memory, disk, and network resources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Infrastructure choices

The project says Coolify can use a VPS, bare-metal server, Raspberry Pi, or any other server that accepts SSH. A Raspberry Pi can suit a small home-lab service or development environment when workload size and storage needs are modest. Production game backends, databases, and public services may require more CPU, memory, disk performance, network capacity, redundancy, or geographic distribution than a small board can provide.

A rented VPS can provide a predictable starting point, while bare metal may make sense for sustained workloads or specialized storage. The provider is your infrastructure decision, not a requirement imposed by Coolify. Coolify documentation names Hetzner, DigitalOcean, and AWS as examples of providers from which users can bring servers; compare current prices, regions, bandwidth policies, backup products, and support terms before choosing one.

For a Linux VPS with a one-click Coolify image, Antihost VPS offers full root access, NVMe storage, and AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D servers in the USA East, Netherlands, and Ukraine.

Coolify Cloud versus self-hosted Coolify

The two models expose the same core feature set for deploying and managing applications, databases, and one-click services. The important difference is who maintains the Coolify control plane.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option Coolify platform charge Who maintains the control plane? Where workloads run
Self-hosted Coolify Free Forever, with full feature access and no platform restrictions You install updates, secure the installation, monitor it, and plan backup and restore procedures Servers you provide and connect over SSH
Coolify Cloud $5 per month base price for two connected servers, plus $3 per month for each additional server (pricing page accessed October 15, 2026) The Coolify service maintains the control plane Servers you still provide; applications, databases, and services do not run on the Cloud subscription itself

Self-hosting removes the Coolify subscription, not the cost of infrastructure. You pay for the machine, storage, bandwidth, backups, and any supporting services you choose. Cloud adds the platform subscription but removes the work of patching and operating the Coolify control plane. In both cases, the servers that run your workloads remain your responsibility.

For a simple cost illustration, two connected servers under the listed Cloud base price add $5 per month for the control plane, while a third server adds $3 per month. That figure does not include any VPS, bare-metal, storage, bandwidth, or backup charges. Self-hosted Coolify avoids that platform line item but requires your own time and infrastructure for the control plane.

Is Coolify a self-hosted Heroku or Vercel alternative?

Coolify occupies a similar convenience layer to a platform-as-a-service product, but its operating model is different. Managed platforms abstract most of the underlying infrastructure. Coolify gives you a deployment interface while leaving the infrastructure in your hands.

Decision area Coolify Typical fully managed platform model
Control and data location You select the servers and keep configuration and workloads on infrastructure you provide The provider abstracts more of the infrastructure and its location
Deployment inputs GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Gitea, Dockerfiles, Git-based Compose files, and existing Docker images Often centered on a provider-specific build and deployment workflow
Workload types Static sites, full-stack applications, databases, and arbitrary Docker-compatible services Usually optimized for a defined set of application runtimes and managed services
Operations You handle server capacity, security, backups, updates, monitoring, and incident response; Cloud only removes control-plane maintenance The provider absorbs more infrastructure operations, subject to its service limits and terms
Pricing model Self-hosted has no Coolify platform subscription; Cloud charges $5 monthly for two connected servers and $3 monthly per additional server, while infrastructure remains yours Pricing generally bundles platform usage and provider-managed infrastructure in a different model
Scaling and reliability Coolify can connect to multiple servers, but high availability, failover, capacity planning, and backups depend on your architecture Some infrastructure resilience may be supplied by the provider, but exact guarantees depend on the selected service

Calling Coolify a Heroku or Vercel alternative is therefore useful as a shorthand for the deployment experience, not as a promise of identical reliability or abstraction. Coolify can provide a comparable control surface for many workloads, while the underlying responsibility stays with you.

What changes for a Vercel-style frontend?

A static site or frontend can be deployed through a supported repository or image and served through the reverse proxy on its workload server. You choose the server, domain, and operational policies rather than relying on a provider’s globally managed frontend network. If you need geographic distribution, failover, or specialized caching, those capabilities must come from your own infrastructure design or additional services.

What changes for a Heroku-style application?

A conventional web application can follow a familiar build-and-deploy flow, but the dyno-like abstraction stops at the platform boundary. You still size the host, maintain the operating system and Docker environment, configure persistent storage, and decide how the application behaves when a server or database fails.

What self-hosting requires

Before choosing the free self-hosted edition, account for the work outside the deployment screen.

  • Linux and Docker administration: You need a server that can run Docker and accept SSH connections, plus enough CPU, memory, disk, and network capacity for your containers.
  • Control-plane maintenance: Install Coolify, apply updates, protect administrative access, and keep the host itself patched.
  • Data protection: Configure persistent storage and backups for databases and uploaded files. Test restoration rather than assuming a backup exists because a container is running.
  • Security: Use strong SSH credentials, restrict exposed ports, keep images and hosts updated, and separate public services from management access where practical.
  • Observability: Monitor disk space, memory, CPU, container health, certificates, and server reachability. Health checks can report a failing application; they do not repair an unavailable host or restore lost data.
  • Availability planning: Multiple connected servers do not automatically create high availability. Failover, replicated data, load balancing, and recovery testing must be designed for the workload.

Also document ownership. Decide who can access the Coolify account, who holds SSH credentials, who approves production changes, and who responds when a certificate expires or a host becomes unreachable. A small team can keep this process lightweight, but it should be explicit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installation starting point

The project README publishes this command for installing Coolify on a supported server:

curl -fsSL https://cdn.coollabs.io/coolify/install.sh | bash

Review the current installation documentation and the script before executing it. Confirm that the host is one you control, that SSH access is configured, and that you understand which ports, storage paths, and administrative accounts the installation will use. Treat the command as an installation starting point, not as a complete production hardening plan.

After installation, connect a workload server and deploy a noncritical test application first. Verify domain routing, HTTPS issuance, logs, health checks, persistent volumes, and the behavior of an update. This small rehearsal exposes networking and storage assumptions before they affect a customer-facing service.

How to decide whether Coolify fits

Choose it when control is a priority

Coolify is well suited to developers who are comfortable operating Linux servers and Docker, want to avoid platform lock-in, need databases or nonstandard Docker services beside their applications, or must keep workloads on selected infrastructure. It is also attractive for agencies and homelabs that want one deployment interface across several machines.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a more managed approach when operations are the problem

If your team does not want to patch hosts, manage networking, plan backups, watch capacity, or respond to server incidents, self-hosted Coolify will not remove those duties. Coolify Cloud reduces the maintenance burden for the control plane, but it still does not operate the servers that run your applications and databases.

Use a workload-first test

  1. List every component: front end, API, workers, databases, queues, scheduled jobs, and storage.
  2. Mark which components require persistent data and define how each one will be backed up and restored.
  3. Estimate resource and network needs for the actual player or user load; Coolify publishes no universal benchmark for deployment speed, uptime, or resource consumption.
  4. Decide whether one server is acceptable or whether the design needs separate machines, replication, or failover.
  5. Choose self-hosted or Cloud based on who will maintain the control plane, then document upgrades, monitoring, credentials, and recovery steps.

Common pitfalls and practical safeguards

Confusing a deployment tool with hosting

Coolify orchestrates workloads on your servers. If the server runs out of disk, loses its network connection, or fails, Coolify cannot substitute for capacity planning or infrastructure recovery. Budget for the underlying machine and its backups even when the self-hosted platform itself is free.

Assuming a template equals a managed database

A one-click database template simplifies container creation. It does not automatically provide tested backups, replication, encryption policy, upgrade scheduling, or a recovery-time objective. Define those controls separately before storing important player or customer data.

Expecting multiple servers to provide automatic failover

Connecting several servers gives you placement options. High availability requires an architecture that can redirect traffic, preserve or replicate state, detect failure, and recover services. Validate that design with a restore or failover exercise.

Skipping update planning

Coolify, Docker, operating-system packages, and application images all change over time. Schedule updates, retain a rollback path, and test changes on a noncritical environment when the workload warrants it. Feature counts, templates, supported versions, and prices can change, so check current official information before a major deployment decision.

Putting management access on the public edge

The control plane and workload endpoints have different security needs. Restrict administrative access where practical, use strong credentials, and avoid exposing management ports unnecessarily. Public HTTPS for an application does not mean the administration interface should have identical exposure.

Frequently asked questions

Is Coolify really free?

Self-hosted Coolify is listed as Free Forever with full feature access and no platform restrictions. Your server, storage, bandwidth, backup, and administration costs still apply. Coolify Cloud has a listed base price of $5 per month for two connected servers, plus $3 per month for each additional server.

Does Coolify host my applications?

No. Coolify manages deployments, while your connected VPS, bare-metal server, Raspberry Pi, or other SSH-accessible machine runs the Docker workloads. Cloud hosts the control plane, not the applications themselves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I deploy from GitHub?

Yes. Coolify supports GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, and Gitea repositories, as well as Dockerfiles, Git-based Docker Compose definitions, and existing Docker images.

Can Coolify run databases?

Yes. Examples in the official service catalog include PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB, and ClickHouse. You must provide the storage, backup, security, and recovery design.

Does Coolify replace Docker?

No. Docker on the connected servers runs the containers. Coolify supplies the control plane that coordinates builds, deployments, domains, HTTPS, health checks, and related configuration.

Is Coolify suitable for production?

It can be, when you operate the underlying infrastructure appropriately. Production suitability depends on your capacity, security, monitoring, backup, failover, and incident-response design; Coolify does not provide a universal uptime or performance guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between Coolify Cloud and self-hosting?

The core deployment and service features are the same. With self-hosting, you maintain the Coolify control plane. With Cloud, the Coolify service maintains that control plane, while you still operate the servers where workloads run.

Can a Raspberry Pi run Coolify?

The project lists Raspberry Pi among supported server classes. It can be reasonable for a small home-lab or development workload, but evaluate CPU, memory, storage, network capacity, and the consequences of a single-device failure before using one for production.

Bottom line

Coolify is a genuine self-hosted PaaS control plane: it gives you a Heroku- or Vercel-like deployment workflow while Docker workloads remain on servers you choose. Its strengths are infrastructure control, broad Docker and source compatibility, and the ability to run applications, databases, and services together. Its cost is operational ownership. Select it when your team is prepared to run the servers and protect the data; select Coolify Cloud when you want the control plane maintained but are still willing to operate the workload infrastructure.
