The most reliable way to build a difficult Fallout: New Vegas survival run is to install the Viva New Vegas foundation first, then choose one primary challenge overhaul. For a refined, vanilla-oriented rebalance, use JSawyer Ultimate Edition. For a much deeper simulation with farming, brahmin herding and housing, use Mojave Survival instead. If you only want to tune Hardcore-style pressure without replacing thousands of game records, use Hardcore Customization INI.
Do not casually stack JSawyer Ultimate and Mojave Survival. Mojave Survival says it changes more than 10,000 records and warns that similar overhauls such as JSawyer are almost certain to have major conflicts. Pick one main overhaul unless its author documents a compatibility patch.

Start with stability: the Viva New Vegas foundation
Survival mechanics cannot help a run that crashes, corrupts saves or fails to load. Viva New Vegas is the technical starting point because its required section identifies the mods needed for New Vegas to work and perform better. The guide is deliberately sequential: it warns, You can NOT skip any paragraphs/instructions and expect your game to function as it should.

Treat the guide as an installation procedure rather than a list of optional recommendations. Read each section in order, complete its prerequisites, and apply its configuration instructions before moving to gameplay changes. A stable base also makes troubleshooting possible: if a new survival overhaul causes a problem, you have a known-good technical layer to return to.
#1 Best Overall
- Beyond the Wasteland: The world of New Vegas is more expansive than ever. Each new distinct area presents a fresh set of branching-quests, remarkable personalities and more chances to play the Savior or the Pariah to the natives of New Vegas.
- Dead Money: Lured into a trap masquerading as the Sierra Madre Casino, you are thrown into a high stakes game where you'll have to work with three other lost souls if you want to survive.
- Honest Hearts: An expedition into Utah's Zion National Park goes horribly wrong and you become embroiled in a war between tribes and put into a conflict between a New Canaanite missionary and the mysterious Burning Man.
- Old World Blues: Transported to the Big MT research crater, you are enlisted by the Think Tank to save them from their own science experiments that have gone horribly out of control.
- Lonesome Road: Ulysses, the original Courier Six, contacts you and promises to answer why he refused to deliver the Platinum Chip at the start of Fallout: New Vegas, but only if you make one last journey into the treacherous canyons of the Divide.
Core technical pieces called out by independent coverage
PC Gamer’s December 2025 New Vegas modding guide independently recommends installing New Vegas Anti-Crash, the 4GB Patcher, New Vegas Tick Fix, xNVSE and JIP LN NVSE before deeper gameplay modifications. These tools address different parts of the PC setup, so they should be installed and configured before you judge a survival overhaul. Follow the current Viva New Vegas instructions for exact versions, ordering and settings rather than improvising from an old load-order post.
Use a clean baseline
- Begin with a PC installation of Fallout: New Vegas and all official downloadable content if you plan to use either principal overhaul.
- Finish the Viva New Vegas required section before adding challenge mechanics.
- Launch the game and confirm that a new test character can reach gameplay and save successfully.
- Keep a backup of that working profile so you can test one gameplay change at a time.
This staged approach matters because a survival overhaul changes the conditions under which you test stability. If you add several large mods at once, a failed launch does not tell you which record edits or scripts caused it.
JSawyer Ultimate Edition: the best default for vanilla-plus difficulty
JSawyer Ultimate Edition is the strongest default recommendation for most challenge runs. Its author, PushTheWinButton, describes it as a complete, from-scratch remake of the original JSawyer mod. The goal is not to turn New Vegas into a different genre; it is to preserve the original spirit while correcting inconsistencies and improving compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat it changes
The mod focuses on difficulty and rebalance rather than building an entirely new survival economy. Its documented options include survival damage, item rarity, armor-repair kits and Hardcore-related balance changes. Those switches let you increase pressure without committing to a full simulation overhaul.
- Survival damage: choose a harsher damage model when you want mistakes in combat to have immediate consequences.
- Item rarity: reduce the rate at which useful supplies appear so exploration and route planning matter more.
- Armor-repair kits: adjust how easily equipment condition can be maintained, making gear wear part of the run rather than background maintenance.
- Hardcore balance: tune the relationship between the overhaul and New Vegas’s built-in Hardcore rules.
Because these are configurable options, JSawyer Ultimate can support several styles: a light vanilla-plus pass, a severe combat run, or a resource-conscious campaign that still feels recognisably like the base game. Read its configuration documentation before changing values, and make changes between test saves rather than during a critical quest.
Why it fits a first challenge run
JSawyer Ultimate is easier to recommend as a starting point because its scope is comparatively focused. You receive more consequential combat, tighter supplies and a rebalance that aims to remain compatible with the wider game. That makes it suitable when you want the original quest structure and exploration loop to remain central.
It is also the better choice when your load order already contains gameplay additions. A focused rebalance still requires compatibility checking, but it does not claim to replace as many systems as Mojave Survival. Do not interpret that as a guarantee: inspect every compatibility note for the other mods you use.
Mojave Survival: choose this for a full survival simulation
Mojave Survival is the high-intensity alternative. It extends Hardcore mode with systems that reach beyond hunger, thirst and sleep pressure, including farming, brahmin herding, housing and overhauled vanilla mechanics. The result is a run in which sustaining a character and building a reliable base are part of the challenge.
The systems that make it different
- Farming: survival can involve producing resources rather than only scavenging them.
- Brahmin herding: livestock becomes part of the broader survival loop.
- Housing: a home provides a reason to plan routes and return to established locations.
- Overhauled vanilla systems: the mod reaches into many existing mechanics instead of limiting itself to a few difficulty sliders.
Those additions make Mojave Survival the right fit if you want the wasteland to feel like an environment that must be managed. They also make it a poor candidate for casual stacking. Its compatibility section states that it changes more than 10,000 records and that similar overhauls such as JSawyer are almost certain to have major conflicts.
Required downloadable content
Mojave Survival lists Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, Lonesome Road, Gun Runners’ Arsenal and Courier’s Stash as requirements. Install and enable every listed add-on before activating the overhaul. A missing requirement is not a harmless omission: the mod may fail to load, produce missing content or behave unpredictably.
Who should pick it
Choose Mojave Survival when the survival systems themselves are the point of the run. It is especially appropriate for players who want to establish routines, maintain a settlement or make resource production part of progression. If your priority is simply tougher firefights and scarcer loot while preserving the normal New Vegas rhythm, JSawyer Ultimate is the cleaner fit.

Hardcore Customization INI: targeted pressure without a total overhaul
Hardcore Customization INI is the lightweight route. Instead of replacing a broad set of systems, it adds a configuration file with options that affect Hardcore and realistic-style gameplay. This is useful when you know which part of a run feels too forgiving and want to adjust that element directly.
When an INI-based approach is better
- You want to keep the rest of your load order intact.
- You prefer incremental tuning over a complete rebalance.
- You are testing a challenge concept and do not yet know whether you need a major overhaul.
- You want to reverse a setting without rebuilding the entire profile.
Make one deliberate change at a time, record what you changed, and test it on a disposable save. Configuration files are powerful precisely because they can alter the game without the visible footprint of a large content mod; that also makes undocumented combinations harder to diagnose.
JSawyer Ultimate vs. Mojave Survival vs. Hardcore Customization INI
| Option | Survival-system depth | Combat and lethality | Food, water and sleep pressure | Inventory, ammunition and loot pressure | Scope and compatibility risk | Vanilla resemblance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| JSawyer Ultimate Edition | Focused difficulty and rebalance | Configurable survival damage and Hardcore balance | Uses configurable Hardcore-related changes | Configurable item rarity and armor-repair-kit settings | Primary overhaul; check every gameplay mod for conflicts | High; designed as a vanilla-oriented reconstruction |
| Mojave Survival | Broad simulation with farming, brahmin herding, housing and overhauled vanilla systems | Extends Hardcore mode as part of a wider overhaul | Designed for deeper survival management | Broad system changes; exact effects depend on its configuration and documentation | Changes more than 10,000 records; similar overhauls are likely to conflict | Lower; it substantially changes how the wasteland is managed |
| Hardcore Customization INI | Targeted configuration rather than a complete overhaul | Adjusts Hardcore and realistic-style options | Depends on the settings you select | Depends on the settings you select | Lower scope than a full overhaul, but individual combinations still require testing | Highest; leaves the wider game structure mostly intact |
The table is a choice of design goals, not a ranking in which one mod wins every category. JSawyer Ultimate is the balanced starting point, Mojave Survival is the simulation-heavy path, and Hardcore Customization INI is the precision tool.

How to make Hardcore mode genuinely challenging
A difficult run is not created by turning every setting to its harshest value without a plan. Decide what kind of pressure you want, then choose the smallest tool that delivers it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For harsher combat
Use JSawyer Ultimate’s survival-damage and Hardcore-related options. Keep the rest of your load order stable while you test the change. A combat-focused run should still leave room for tactical choices; if every encounter becomes an unavoidable reload, the setting has exceeded the challenge you intended.
For scarce supplies
Use item-rarity options in JSawyer Ultimate or targeted settings in Hardcore Customization INI. Scarcity works best when it changes decisions rather than merely making the game tedious. Plan which ammunition, repair materials and consumables you carry, and avoid adding another overhaul that edits the same records.
For equipment attrition
Adjust armor-repair-kit behavior through JSawyer Ultimate if gear condition is the pressure you want. This creates a clear trade-off between maintaining current equipment and searching for replacements.
For a managed-survival campaign
Choose Mojave Survival. Its farming, herding and housing systems create objectives outside combat, so the run’s difficulty comes from maintaining a sustainable routine as well as winning fights.

Installation checklist for a crash-resistant challenge run
- Install the PC game and official DLC. JSawyer Ultimate and Mojave Survival both require the complete official DLC set documented by their authors. Mojave Survival specifically lists Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, Lonesome Road, Gun Runners’ Arsenal and Courier’s Stash.
- Build the technical base. Follow Viva New Vegas from its required section onward. Do not skip explanatory paragraphs, prerequisites or configuration steps.
- Add the core stability tools. PC Gamer’s December 2025 guide calls out New Vegas Anti-Crash, the 4GB Patcher, New Vegas Tick Fix, xNVSE and JIP LN NVSE as preparation before deeper gameplay changes. Use the current guide’s instructions for installation and version compatibility.
- Test an unmodified gameplay profile. Start a new character, enter the world, save, quit and reload. This gives you a baseline before challenge mechanics are introduced.
- Choose one primary overhaul. Install JSawyer Ultimate or Mojave Survival, not both by default. If you choose Hardcore Customization INI, treat it as your targeted tuning layer and still check conflicts with other gameplay mods.
- Read the chosen mod’s requirements and configuration notes. Enable every required DLC and apply documented settings before beginning a serious run.
- Test before committing. Use a new character and a short route that exercises combat, inventory and saving. Do not rely on an old save created before the overhaul was installed.
- Freeze the profile for the campaign. Once the run begins, avoid adding or removing major gameplay mods. Keep an archived copy of the working load order and configuration files.
Compatibility rules and failure recovery
Do not stack major overhauls casually
Mojave Survival’s warning about conflicts with JSawyer is the key rule: a large record footprint means that another mod changing the same mechanics can overwrite, duplicate or invalidate its work. The fact that two mods both improve Hardcore mode does not make them complementary.

Add changes in isolation
If the game stops launching after a new mod, remove the newest change first and return to the last profile that loaded. If the problem disappears, consult the mod’s compatibility documentation before trying another combination. Avoid using a valuable campaign save as your first test case.
Separate technical failures from balance disagreements
A crash, missing object or broken script is a compatibility problem. A run that feels too easy or too punishing is a configuration problem. Solve them differently: restore the stable profile for technical faults, and adjust documented settings for balance concerns.

Decision guide: which setup should you install?
| Your priority | Recommended setup | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A tougher game that still feels like New Vegas | Viva New Vegas foundation plus JSawyer Ultimate Edition | Vanilla-oriented rebalance with configurable damage, rarity, repair and Hardcore options |
| A full survival-management campaign | Viva New Vegas foundation plus Mojave Survival | Adds farming, brahmin herding, housing and broad system changes |
| One or two specific Hardcore adjustments | Viva New Vegas foundation plus Hardcore Customization INI | Targeted configuration without committing to a broad overhaul |
| A large existing gameplay load order | Foundation plus the smallest compatible tuning option | Reduces the chance of overlapping record edits; inspect every compatibility note |
Regardless of the branch you choose, keep the technical foundation separate from the difficulty layer. That separation gives you a stable baseline, a clear rollback point and a fair test of what the survival mod actually changes.
Frequently asked questions
Is JSawyer Ultimate better than Mojave Survival?
Neither is universally better. JSawyer Ultimate is better for a vanilla-plus challenge focused on rebalance and configurable lethality. Mojave Survival is better when farming, herding, housing and broad survival management are the reason you are modding the game.
Can I run Mojave Survival with JSawyer Ultimate?
You should not assume they work together. Mojave Survival documents changes to more than 10,000 records and says similar overhauls such as JSawyer are almost certain to have major conflicts. Use one primary overhaul unless an author-provided compatibility path says otherwise.
What mods make food, water and sleep matter?
Mojave Survival is the dedicated deep-survival choice because it extends Hardcore mode and adds wider systems such as farming, herding and housing. JSawyer Ultimate and Hardcore Customization INI are better suited to tuning Hardcore-related pressure without adopting that full simulation scope.
Do both main overhauls require all official DLC?
Yes. JSawyer Ultimate and Mojave Survival list the official Fallout: New Vegas DLC as requirements. Mojave Survival names Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, Lonesome Road, Gun Runners’ Arsenal and Courier’s Stash specifically.
How do I install hardcore mods without crashing New Vegas?
Build the Viva New Vegas technical foundation first, follow every required instruction, install the stability tools identified by current PC modding guidance, test a clean profile, then add one primary overhaul and test it on a new save.
