Best Fighting Games for Solo Play and Couch Multiplayer: 10 Picks for 2026

Street Fighter 6 is the best all-around choice if you want a substantial solo mode and traditional local versus: its World Tour campaign gives you a long, RPG-style route through the game, and Fighting Ground includes official offline local battles. Choose Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition if a cinematic story matters most, or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate if your living room needs one-screen matches for a crowd. The key trade-off is format: most traditional fighters are built for two players at a time, while platform fighters such as Smash can host larger groups.

Recommendations and availability below are current to October 2026. “Best” depends as much on your platform, preferred kind of story and number of local players as on the fighting system itself.

Which fighting game should you buy for solo play and local multiplayer?

For most players, buy Street Fighter 6. It is the most balanced recommendation here: there is a substantial avatar-led solo campaign, a clear beginner option, and local one-on-one play in the same package. It does not turn into a party brawler, though. If you need a game that can put a large group into one match, Smash is the better fit; if a high-production story is the priority, Mortal Kombat 1 is the stronger pick.

Traditional fighters—Street Fighter, Tekken, Mortal Kombat and similar games—typically mean two people sharing a screen in direct versus. Platform fighters trade that strict duel structure for larger, more chaotic matches. Decide how many people will actually play at once before choosing from a list of “best fighters.”

What are the best fighting games with strong single-player modes and local multiplayer?

These picks are ranked for the combination of an actual solo hook and local play, not solely for online competition. The top of the list favors games that do both jobs particularly well; later entries suit more specific tastes.

1. Street Fighter 6 — best overall

Street Fighter 6 is the most complete one-game answer for a player who wants to play alone and then hand a second controller to a friend. World Tour is an avatar-driven campaign set mainly in Metro City and Nayshall: you train with series characters, learn their moves and build a custom fighting style. Capcom describes it as a single-player immersive story mode in which players can leave a legacy with their avatar. It is an RPG-adjacent structure rather than a cinematic sequence of fights, which makes it a better fit for players who want to explore and progress at their own pace.

Capcom’s Fighting Ground brings together Arcade Mode, Training Mode, online matches and local versus battles. The local mode is an official feature, but it is conventional two-player 1v1—not Smash-style group play. Modern controls make special moves easier to execute, while the Drive System leaves room to learn more demanding strategies later. Dynamic controls are also available offline.

Street Fighter 6 is available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. The native Switch 2 release arrived on 5 June 2025; Ninjutsu reports that matches run at a locked 60 frames per second on that version. The game remains in active development: Year 4 additions included Yasmine in August 2026 and Arjun on 13 October 2026, with Tifa Lockhart listed for Season 4 / early 2027. Those updates add fighters; they do not mean World Tour is receiving a steady stream of new campaign chapters. IGN reported in October 2026 that major World Tour updates had been paused for the foreseeable future.

There is evidence of a large competitive community, though tournament participation and day-to-day online activity are not the same measure. Capcom announced in June 2026 that the game had passed 7 million cumulative units sold worldwide. At EVO Japan 2026, Capcom, Guinness World Records and Evo certified 7,168 Street Fighter 6 competitors as the largest tournament for a single fighting game. Those figures help explain why SF6 is the default pick for players who may eventually want to learn competitive play, but the solo and local modes are the reasons it fits this guide.

Choose it if: you want a broad-platform 1v1 fighter with a campaign, approachable controls and a clear route from casual matches into deeper play. Look elsewhere if: your local group needs more than two players in a match or values couch-party variety above competitive 1v1 depth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition — best cinematic story

Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition is the story-first choice among current traditional fighters. The reboot centers on Fire God Liu Kang and features a cinematic campaign, followed by the Khaos Reigns story chapter. Definitive Edition bundles both Kombat Packs as well as Khaos Reigns, making it the complete content package rather than a base-game recommendation that depends on buying separate story expansions.

Local play is two-player versus. Kameo fighters add an assist character to each side, so a couch match has a tag-team flavor even though the core contest remains one-on-one. This is an adult-rated, graphic series, not the family-friendly choice for a mixed-age room. Guest fighters include Homelander, Omni-Man and T-1000.

NetherRealm finished adding characters and story content in 2025, so this is a more complete, finished box than a fighter still receiving new seasons. That distinction also sets expectations: the campaign is the main reason to choose MK1, not a promise of an endless stream of new offline activities. Ninjutsu describes the other offline material as thinner than Mortal Kombat 11’s, citing repetitive Invasions and the absence of a Krypt. The original Switch version is the one to avoid: Ninjutsu documents severe frame-rate and resolution issues. Switch 2 runs the Switch copy, with launch issues patched on 19 June 2025.

Choose it if: you want spectacle, a complete story expansion and adult two-player matches. If you want a long-term online game that is still adding characters, or a low-gore party game, another pick fits better.

3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — best for local groups

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the clear choice when “local multiplayer” means a crowded room rather than a two-controller duel. Its roster has 89 fighters, and matches support up to eight local players on one screen. More than 100 stages give groups room to vary the setting, and the controls are easy to grasp quickly even when players have very different experience levels.

World of Light is the important solo qualification for this list: it is an adventure campaign with a map and boss encounters, not just a menu of arcade matches. It gives Smash a real single-player activity alongside its party strength, though the game’s main distinction remains local group play.

The platform limitation is decisive. Ultimate is a Nintendo Switch game and is playable on Switch 2 through backward compatibility; it is not an option for a PS5-, Xbox- or PC-only household. Its fighter roster has not received new characters since 2021, and SilverGames characterizes its online play as weaker than rollback-based rivals such as Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8. If you are choosing for a Switch household that prioritizes a lively room, those limitations may matter less than the eight-player format.

Choose it if: several people want to play at the same time, especially in a mixed-skill or family setting. If your group lacks a Switch, Brawlhalla is a free, cross-play alternative with up to eight local players, but it has negligible story content and is not a substitute for Smash’s solo campaign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Tekken 8 — best 3D fighter for solo players

Tekken 8 pairs a cinematic Mishima-family story—Jin versus Kazuya—with Arcade Quest, a separate avatar-led path set around game centers. The main story aims for blockbuster spectacle; Arcade Quest functions more like a tutorial journey that teaches the game through its arcade setting. Special Style simplifies combos, and replay analysis offers corrections that can help players understand mistakes.

It also supports two-player local versus on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its 3D movement and Heat system make it a distinct alternative to Street Fighter’s 2D lanes, but that extra dimension can be a learning hurdle. Switchblade Gaming estimates about 50 hours to reach a basic skill floor; treat that as an editorial estimate, not a guaranteed amount of practice time. Beginners curious about 3D fighters should start with Special Style and Arcade Quest, then decide whether they want to learn the full movement system.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Tekken 8 remains in active development. Season 3 was live in 2026, with Kunimitsu and Bob released and Roger Jr. due in fall 2026 according to SilverGames. At EVO Japan 2026 it had 882 registrants in a registration snapshot reported by Dexerto; that snapshot may not equal unique participants. This is useful competitive context, but the story and local mode make it a solo-and-couch option even if you never enter a bracket.

5. Injustice 2 — best older superhero story fighter

Injustice 2 remains a strong catalog pick if its superhero setting appeals more than having the newest season of a fighting game. The campaign builds around Batman and Superman’s conflict under the Regime, with Brainiac threatening Earth. VGTimes calls it one of the genre’s best story campaigns. Gear customization, interactive stages and Multiverse challenges give players more to do beyond the main plot, while local play supports two players.

DualShockers has noted a 2026 rumor cycle around Injustice 3, but that is not confirmation of a sequel. Consider Injustice 2 on the merits of its existing campaign and local mode, not as a guaranteed prelude to an announced follow-up.

6. Guilty Gear -Strive- — best anime presentation

Guilty Gear -Strive- tells its story as a full-length anime film rather than a sequence of playable campaign fights. That is a meaningful solo option for someone who wants the characters and plot, but it is important to know the format: the story is non-interactive, so you watch it rather than playing through it. The local fighting is a conventional one-on-one match.

The game is a good fit for players who care about a distinct anime visual style and want a serious fighting system after watching the story. Switchblade describes its rollback netcode as a genre benchmark. Version 2.00 and Season Pass 5 were current in 2026, including Jam and Robo-Ky. A Switch release is available, but Ninjutsu notes that the Switch version does not support cross-play.

7. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves — best newer traditional fighter with a story route

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves gives solo players Episodes of South Town, a story path following Terry Bogard and Rock Howard. Its Smart Style provides a simpler control option for newcomers, while the REV system gives experienced players another layer to learn. Local play supports two people.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VGTimes reports that it won Best Fighting Game at The Game Awards 2025. SilverGames listed a Switch 2 version as due 22 October 2026, which had passed by the October 30 date of this guide; confirm regional availability in your store before buying. Its online pool is smaller than Street Fighter 6 or Tekken 8, so it is more compelling for a player drawn to the series, its story path or its local duels than for someone who wants the largest matchmaking community.

8. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising — best low-risk beginner option

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is the easiest way to sample a story-bearing fighter without committing to a full purchase first. Its free edition includes a starter character, rotating fighters, online play and part of the story mode. Smart controls and triple-press auto-combos reduce the execution barrier, while the story continues the RPG crew’s adventure. The roster reached 40 in September 2026, and a Switch 2 launch arrived that month with cross-play against PlayStation and PC.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Switchblade Gaming estimates about 15 hours to reach a basic skill floor; that is an editorial estimate rather than a fixed learning requirement. The competitive scene is smaller than the largest mainstream fighters. Start with the free edition to see whether its pace and characters appeal, then consider the full version if you want the complete story and roster.

9. Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero — best anime-scale couch spectacle

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is an arena fighter built around large-scale battles rather than the traditional lane-based structure of Street Fighter or Tekken. Episode Battles revisit story arcs and include “what if” branches; the Custom Battle editor lets players build their own scenarios. VGTimes reports local split-screen and a roster of nearly 200 characters, making it the pick for Dragon Ball fans who want dramatic couch battles with a substantial solo mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse it with Dragon Ball FighterZ. FighterZ is the more technical 3v3 tag fighter, with auto-combos and local two-player matches, but Ninjutsu calls its story mode an afterthought. Choose FighterZ for tag mechanics and versus depth; choose Sparking! Zero if the episode battles and spectacle are the stronger draw.

10. Dragon Ball FighterZ — best technical tag option with a caveat

Dragon Ball FighterZ belongs here for players whose priority is a fast, technical team fighter and who still want local versus. Auto-combos give newcomers a way to participate without first mastering every motion input, and its three-on-three format creates a different local strategy from a standard single-character duel. Its weakness against this particular brief is the solo campaign: Ninjutsu describes the story mode as an afterthought. It is therefore a narrower recommendation than the picks above, particularly for anyone buying primarily for offline content.

Which should beginners choose?

Beginners are not locked out of fighting games by complicated inputs. Several games now offer simplified controls that let a new player participate immediately, while leaving room to learn more advanced techniques if the game clicks.

  • Street Fighter 6: start with Modern controls for simplified special moves; try Dynamic offline for a more assistive option. World Tour connects character training and versus play.
  • Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising: try the free edition, Smart controls and triple-press auto-combos before deciding whether to buy the full game.
  • Tekken 8: use Special Style and Arcade Quest if you are curious about 3D movement. Expect to spend longer learning spacing and movement than in the simpler beginner paths.
  • Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves: Smart Style offers a more accessible way into its traditional fighting system.
  • Dragon Ball FighterZ: auto-combos can help a newcomer contribute in a 3v3 match, though its campaign is not a strong reason to buy.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: best when the goal is an accessible group match, provided the household has a Switch.

If your group includes both experienced and brand-new players, the right first game is usually the one whose simplified controls and match format fit the room—not necessarily the game with the most advanced tournament system.

How should you choose between a story, a campaign and an arcade ladder?

“Single-player mode” can mean very different things in a fighting game. Check the structure before buying: a cinematic story, an explorable campaign, a film you watch, and an arcade ladder offer different kinds of offline time.

  • Cinematic story: Mortal Kombat 1 and Tekken 8 emphasize directed, cutscene-heavy campaigns. Injustice 2 is an older superhero alternative.
  • Avatar or adventure campaign: Street Fighter 6’s World Tour has exploration, character training and a custom avatar. Smash’s World of Light is an adventure map with bosses.
  • Story film: Guilty Gear -Strive- presents a full anime-style story, but it is not a playable campaign.
  • Story episodes and arcade-style progression: Fatal Fury’s Episodes of South Town and Tekken 8’s Arcade Quest give solo players a path structured around the fighting game itself.
  • Character-specific retellings and branches: Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero’s Episode Battles revisit arcs and add alternate “what if” routes.

For an offline-first buyer, story quality and the amount of solo activity after the credits are separate questions. Mortal Kombat 1 is the standout for cinematic storytelling, but Ninjutsu reports that its remaining offline activities are thinner than those in Mortal Kombat 11. Street Fighter 6’s World Tour is more exploratory, while Smash’s solo campaign is tied to its broader party fighter.

How many people can play locally?

Most traditional fighters on this list are two-player games locally. Smash is the exception for a big shared-screen group; other platform fighters can also fill that party role, but their solo modes are not as strong.

Local format Good fits What to expect
Two-player 1v1 Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, Mortal Kombat 1, Guilty Gear -Strive-, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves Direct controller-versus-controller matches; not an eight-player party format.
Up to eight local players Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Brawlhalla Group matches with platform-fighter rules; Smash also has World of Light, while Brawlhalla has negligible story content.
Up to four local players Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, Rivals of Aether II Smaller platform-fighter group options. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 has a roguelite-flavored solo campaign; Rivals 2 is strongest as a PC multiplayer pick.
Local split-screen Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero Arena-style Dragon Ball battles rather than a traditional 1v1 fighter.

Local player count describes who can share a match, not how deep the solo mode is or whether the game is available on your system. Smash is Switch-family exclusive; a PC-only group can look at Rivals of Aether II for up to four local players, while Brawlhalla offers up to eight and cross-play. Neither alternative reproduces Smash’s World of Light campaign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What other games have both a solo hook and local versus?

Several catalog and specialist picks make sense when a particular setting, story format or platform-fighter style matters more than being the broadest recommendation.

  • BlazBlue: Central Fiction: a visual-novel-style story that VGTimes says runs for dozens of hours, plus two-player local play. Choose it for a story-heavy anime fighter rather than a modern blockbuster presentation.
  • Persona 4 Arena Ultimax: a story that matters as much as the fights, with a 2022 re-release and rollback netcode, according to VGTimes.
  • Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2: a cartoon-focused party choice with up to four local players and a roguelite-flavored solo campaign.
  • Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate: a complete older package with the base game, both Kombat Packs and the Aftermath story, plus two-player local play.
  • Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection: a 2025 collection of 23 classic Mortal Kombat versions, with two-player local play; SilverGames and Split the Screen also report rollback for online play.
  • Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics: seven arcade titles, including Marvel vs. Capcom 2, with two-player local matches.
  • Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls: a 2026 4v4 fighter with assists and local two-player play, according to VGTimes and Split the Screen. DualShockers describes a campaign in which Doctor Doom recruits villains. Treat it as a headline option for a local 1v1 session, not as an eight-player party game.
  • Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game: released 23 July 2026, with a story involving eras merging during Harmonic Convergence and 1v1 fights with support NPCs, according to DualShockers. It is a newer option with a smaller scene.
  • Invincible VS: released 30 April 2026, with 18 fighters and an original story connected to the Invincible team, according to DualShockers and VGTimes. Coverage conflicts on story quality: VGTimes calls the story a strength, while Switchblade summarizes reviews that called it bare-bones. The evidence does not settle that disagreement.

Upcoming as of 30 October 2026: DualShockers lists Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered for 3 November 2026, with a solo Adventure Mode and up to four-player local kaiju battles. Because that date is still in the future, it is not yet a proven recommendation; check release-day reviews before buying it for its local feel.

How were these games selected?

Every ranked pick has both a meaningful solo feature and local play documented in the cited coverage. The ranking gives priority to the quality and distinctiveness of that combination, then considers accessibility, platform reach, local group size and whether the game is a complete or actively updated package. Competitive health informs the context but does not determine the order. A game with only a story film, a thin campaign or a strict two-player format is labeled accordingly rather than treated as equivalent to an adventure mode or party fighter.

Platform and format are practical filters, not footnotes: Smash is not an option on PlayStation, Xbox or PC, while SF6, Tekken and MK1 are not eight-player house-party games. Within the traditional 1v1 category, choose the solo structure and controls you most want; within platform fighters, choose by group size and available hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Street Fighter 6 players entered EVO Japan 2026?

Capcom, Guinness World Records and Evo certified 7,168 Street Fighter 6 competitors at EVO Japan 2026 as the largest tournament for a single fighting video game. Capcom reported approximately 34,000 visitors over the three-day event; that attendance figure is separate from the player count.

Is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate really the best-selling fighting game?

A verified Nintendo primary disclosure of Ultimate’s lifetime unit sales was not established in the sources available for this guide. A roundup’s “89m+” figure appears to collide with the game’s 89-character roster, so it should not be repeated as a sales total.

Is there more World Tour content coming to Street Fighter 6?

IGN reported in October 2026 that major World Tour updates had been paused for the foreseeable future. That is distinct from fighter updates: Year 4 character additions continued in 2026, but they do not establish that new World Tour chapters are planned.

When does Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered come out?

DualShockers listed 3 November 2026, which is after the date of this guide. Its advertised Adventure Mode and four-player local battles make it one to watch, but release-day coverage is needed before judging the local experience.
