Which free PS5 or PS4 game should you start with?

Astro’s Playroom: the clearest free PS5 Platinum
Sony’s official game page says, “The game is free for all PS5 console users and is designed to be enjoyed by gamers and families alike.” It is preloaded on PS5 consoles, so there is no separate game purchase in the normal setup. Sony’s page is available at playstation.com/en-us/games/astros-playroom/.
PlatPrices estimates the Platinum at 2/10 difficulty and three to four hours. That estimate covers the base game’s platforming, collectibles and DualSense-focused activities; it is a guide-derived figure, not an official completion promise. The game is designed as a solo showcase for PS5 hardware, so this is the least complicated recommendation for a first free Platinum.

The DualSense is part of the PS5 accessory ecosystem and Astro’s Playroom specifically demonstrates its features. An optional replacement can be searched as “Sony DualSense wireless controller PS5,” but an extra controller is not required to earn the Platinum. A charging station is a convenience accessory, not a trophy requirement.
The Sims 4: the short free PS4 option
Sony lists The Sims 4 base game as free on PS4 and lists expansion packs separately as paid products. PlatPrices estimates the base-game Platinum at 2/10 and three to five hours, making it the strongest short PS4 choice in this verified set.
The important qualification is the word base game. Do not assume every trophy associated with a particular edition or add-on can be earned without checking that edition’s current trophy list. The free base game is the route established here; optional expansions are not automatically part of that entitlement.
Its trophy path is built around normal life-simulation actions rather than high-level competitive play. That makes it approachable for players who prefer menus, building and household management over reflex-heavy challenges. The three-to-five-hour estimate remains a third-party estimate and can vary with familiarity, settings and the order in which objectives are pursued.
Rocket League: easy rating, longer calendar time
Sony lists Rocket League as free on PS4 with optional in-game purchases and optional online play. PlatPrices rates its Platinum 2/10 but estimates 18–20 hours, so the key distinction is that “easy” does not mean “quick.” A player looking for a one-evening completion should choose Astro’s Playroom or The Sims 4 instead.
Rocket League combines football-style matches with rocket-powered cars. The low difficulty estimate reflects the trophy requirements as described by the tracker, while the longer estimate reflects the time needed to accumulate match-related progress and complete broader objectives. These are guide figures, not a measured outcome for every player.

Check the current trophy list before committing to an offline-only plan. Sony’s description identifies online play as optional for the game generally, but an individual trophy list can still contain requirements that depend on the current edition, modes or service state. Optional purchases are not required to claim the free game, although cosmetic items and other in-game products may be offered.
What does “free” mean for a Platinum hunt?
A free store tile is not enough evidence that the complete Platinum route costs nothing. Confirm that the full game is free in the US store, rather than a demo, a first episode, a Friend’s Pass, a time-limited promotion or a PlayStation Plus catalogue entitlement that depends on an active subscription.
- Full free game: The complete base download is available without buying the game. Astro’s Playroom, The Sims 4’s base game and Rocket League fit the documented examples.
- Free trial or demo: A limited slice may be free while the full trophy list belongs to a paid product. Sony labels My First Gran Turismo’s page “Free Trial”; its roughly two-hour introduction is not evidence of a free Platinum.
- Episode or pass: A free first episode does not automatically include the season’s later episodes or their trophy requirements. Treat free first episodes of Life is Strange or Batman: The Telltale Series as limited access, not a free season Platinum.
- Subscription access: A catalogue entitlement can disappear when the catalogue changes or a subscription ends. It should not be treated as the same thing as a permanently free download.
- Optional spending: Paid expansions, cosmetics or other add-ons can exist without being required for the free base-game route. The Sims 4 and Rocket League illustrate this distinction.
PlatPrices warns that free-game lists can include these edge cases, and Sony’s own free-to-play category can contain demos and Friend’s Pass listings. Always open the product page and trophy list for the exact edition before downloading.
How do difficulty and completion time differ?
Difficulty and time measure different decisions. A 2/10 game can still occupy many evenings, while a game with a similar rating can finish in a few hours. Use both estimates, plus online and hardware requirements, when choosing.

Can a PS4 game on PS5 give me a second Platinum?
Usually, running a PS4 game on PS5 does not by itself create a native PS5 trophy list or guarantee a second Platinum. Backward compatibility concerns whether the game runs, not whether trophies transfer or duplicate. A PS4 copy may continue using its PS4 trophy list on PS5, while a separately published PS5 version may have its own list. Check the icon, edition name and trophy list shown on your console before assuming automatic transfers or “double” Platinums.
Sony’s support page refers to more than 4,000 PS4 games and says the overwhelming majority are playable on PS5, but that broad compatibility statement does not guarantee identical peripheral support, online operation or trophy behavior for every title. The exact edition remains decisive.
Is The Playroom VR worth considering?
Only if you already own the compatible original PlayStation VR setup. The game is tracked as free on PS4 and PlatPrices estimates a 2/10 Platinum in four to five hours, but Sony specifies the original PS VR headset, a PS4 camera and the camera adaptor for PS5 use. PS VR2 is not a substitute for those original-PS-VR requirements.
That hardware condition changes the value calculation. Buying a headset, camera and accessories solely to reach one free Platinum defeats the point of a no-cost recommendation. Existing owners can treat The Playroom VR as a short conditional option; everyone else should start with a game that does not require special equipment.
What is known about Chess Mate?
An April 13, 2026 gaming-news report described Chess Mate as a free PS5 game with a straightforward Platinum. No reliable completion-hour estimate was established, and a current US store listing and trophy list still need to be checked before treating it as a confirmed pick.
That makes Chess Mate a watch-list candidate, not a download recommendation based solely on the report. Confirm the US edition, whether the full game remains free, the exact trophy list and any online or account requirements on the day you plan to play.

Which free games should you avoid when speed matters?
Free-to-play status says nothing about Platinum workload. Fall Guys is free on Sony’s editorial page, yet PlatPrices rates its Platinum 9/10 and estimates 50–100 hours. Fortnite is estimated at 800–1,250 hours by the same tracker. They may be excellent free games, but they do not fit an easy, quick-Platinum brief.
My First Gran Turismo is another common false positive. Sony describes it as a standalone introduction and estimates about two hours for its experience, but the page is labelled “Free Trial,” and no Platinum was established here. Do not include it unless the current trophy condition is separately verified.
PlatPrices also lists Halloween Puzzle as a short free Platinum, but its individual current US listing was not established. Other sub-hour puzzle entries in a general tracker list can have eligibility or access conditions. Treat them as unverified candidates rather than confirmed downloads.

Use this three-step check immediately before you start. Store catalogues, live-service requirements and trophy lists can change, so a previously accurate list is not a permanent guarantee.

- Confirm the complete game is free. Read the product page for wording such as free base game, free-to-play or preloaded. Exclude demos, free trials, first episodes, Friend’s Pass entries and subscription-only catalogue access unless you deliberately accept those limits.
- Inspect the current trophy list and requirements. Check that the edition has a Platinum, then look for online, server, peripheral, DLC or account requirements. Compare the current list with any third-party time and difficulty estimate before committing.
This process prevents the most common errors: mistaking a zero-price tile for full access, confusing easy with short, assuming PS4-to-PS5 trophy duplication, and buying hardware or DLC that the free route does not actually require.
