This is an updated guide, not a recovered ranking of the ten products supposedly featured in 2022. The available documentation verifies only a few specific controller-and-device combinations—not ten universal picks. Before buying a gamepad for Android TV, check compatibility with your exact television or streaming box and the game you plan to play.
Which controllers are documented for Android TV?
Compatibility depends on both the controller and the Android TV device. Google provides general instructions for pairing a gamepad, but those instructions do not certify every Bluetooth controller for every TV or box. NVIDIA’s controller guidance is specifically for SHIELD.

The SHIELD Controller’s Wi-Fi Direct connection is a manufacturer-documented SHIELD feature, not independent comparative latency testing. Likewise, SHIELD’s documented support for DualSense and Xbox Series X/S controllers should not be treated as a promise of support on other Android TV hardware.
How to choose a gamepad for your TV or box
- Check the host first. Identify the exact television or streaming-box model and consult its manufacturer’s game-controller compatibility guidance. Do not infer support from the Android TV name alone.
- Confirm the connection method. A device may support Bluetooth accessories, while SHIELD also has NVIDIA’s documented Wi-Fi Direct controller path. If considering a USB adapter, confirm the complete controller-adapter-host combination rather than assuming any adapter will work.
- Match the controls to your games. Consider the layout and grip that suit your games, plus whether features such as a headset jack, chat support, microphone or extra navigation controls matter to you. Those features are not guaranteed across controllers.
- Check availability before settling on a model. Current stock and prices are not established here. Confirm that the controller is available in your region and that the seller identifies the model accurately.
How to pair a gamepad with Android TV
Google’s general Android TV instructions use the accessory-pairing menu. Menu wording or availability can vary by device.

- From the Home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Remote and accessories, then Add accessory.
- Put the gamepad into pairing mode if necessary, then select it when it appears. Follow the prompts on screen. See Google’s Android TV instructions for connecting Bluetooth devices.
For SHIELD, NVIDIA’s SHIELD Experience 8.2.2 release notes say to start Bluetooth pairing on SHIELD and put the controller in pairing mode. They provide button instructions for DualSense and Xbox Series X/S controllers. The documented pairing support is for SHIELD; it does not establish the same procedure or compatibility for every Android TV device.
What to try if pairing fails
- Retry the pairing process, making sure the gamepad is actually in pairing mode.
- Restart both the TV or box and the gamepad, then try adding the accessory again.
- If the controller still is not found, use the troubleshooting guidance for your exact device. Google lists a factory reset as a later step; treat it as a last resort because it resets the device.
- If considering a USB adapter, check the manufacturer’s compatibility and firmware notes for the exact controller and host. Adapter support can depend on the specific combination.
Why this is not a ten-controller ranking
The title dates from 2022, but the available documentation does not verify the original ten products, ranking criteria, prices or tests. It also does not provide independent head-to-head testing, current pricing or current inventory for a cross-brand Android TV list. The options above are therefore limited to combinations and features identified in manufacturer documentation; they should not be read as a ranked top ten.
