Choose Hell Let Loose if you want the closest modern multiplayer substitute for Call of Duty 3’s World War II battles. Pick Enlisted for a free-to-play squad shooter, Squad 44 for the most demanding realism and teamwork, or Easy Red 2 if you need a complete solo mode. None reproduces Call of Duty 3’s exact combination of linear campaign and arcade pacing, so the right choice depends on which part of that game you miss.

Quick decision: which Call of Duty 3 alternative fits you?

“Like Call of Duty 3” can describe several different things: a World War II setting, a scripted single-player campaign, accessible shooting, large battles, or the use of tanks and aircraft alongside infantry. Modern PC games split those traits among different designs rather than combining them in one direct replacement.

If your priority is… Choose What you get Main compromise
The closest modern large-battle multiplayer feel Hell Let Loose 100-player World War II battles with infantry, tanks, artillery and a shifting frontline It is primarily a coordinated online team game, not a traditional solo campaign
A low-cost entry point with squad control Enlisted Free-to-play PC WWII combat, PvE and PvP, and squads fighting alongside large numbers of soldiers, vehicles and aircraft Its structure is broader and more service-game-like than Call of Duty 3’s authored campaign
Maximum realism and communication Squad 44 A tactical WWII FPS built around logistics, artillery, fortifications, armor crews and proximity voice chat It has the heaviest coordination burden and the clearest high-end PC requirement
Playing alone against AI Easy Red 2 Complete solo play, squad command, combined-arms assaults and six base-game campaigns It is a tactical sandbox rather than a tightly scripted blockbuster campaign

The recommendations below explain how each game plays, what type of Call of Duty 3 fan it serves, and where it differs.

Hell Let Loose: the closest modern multiplayer replacement

Hell Let Loose is the strongest overall recommendation when your memory of Call of Duty 3 centers on fighting across recognizable World War II fronts with infantry, armor and artillery all influencing the battle. Steam describes it as a “hardcore World War Two first person shooter,” while the official site presents the original game as covering iconic WWII battles. Its Steam listing advertises 100-player battles, a scale that gives every assault more room to develop than a conventional team deathmatch.

#1 Best Overall
Hell Let Loose (Xbox Series X)
  • Fight in epic 50 vs 50 multiplayer battles.
  • 9 maps with more added frequently - land at Omaha Beach, fight through Carentan and into the frozen forests of Foy before climbing Hill 400.
  • Never fight the same battle twice - 99 capture point variations per map, means thousands of potential battles.
  • Play and master one or many of 14 unique roles, including: Officer, Medic, Machinegunner, Commander, Crewman, Sniper and more.
  • Constantly updated with new maps, weapons, features and fixes.

How its battles differ from Call of Duty 3

Instead of moving through a fixed sequence of set pieces, you participate in a frontline that shifts as objectives are captured or lost. Infantry attacks create openings for tanks; artillery can suppress a position; and a successful push depends on several roles acting together. The result is a battlefield rhythm rather than a scripted campaign rhythm. You may spend time moving, observing and coordinating before a short, intense assault.

This makes Hell Let Loose the best fit for a player who wants the feeling of a large operation rather than a replay of Call of Duty 3’s authored missions. The scale is substantial without requiring the hundreds of AI soldiers used by some squad-focused games, and the combined-arms design gives vehicles a strategic purpose instead of treating them as brief power-ups.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if your priority is a modern, populated WWII multiplayer battlefield with a clear frontline.
  • Choose it if you enjoy learning a role and cooperating with a squad instead of chasing individual score.
  • Choose it if tanks and artillery are as important to you as rifle combat.

Do not choose it expecting a self-contained story campaign. Hell Let Loose is principally an online team experience, so its appeal depends on your willingness to communicate, follow an objective and accept that some matches are slower or less organized than others.

Enlisted: the free-to-play squad option

Enlisted is the easiest recommendation for someone who wants to try a modern WWII FPS without buying in first. Steam lists it as a free-to-play PC release from 2024. You command a squad while fighting alongside large numbers of soldiers, tanks and aircraft, and it supports both player-versus-environment and player-versus-player play.

Why its squad system matters

Rather than representing only one soldier for an entire match, Enlisted lets you manage a group and continue the fight through squad members when the current character is lost. That creates a different relationship with the battlefield from Call of Duty 3: you are still aiming and moving in first person, but you are also thinking about the position and survival of the squad around you.

Rank #2
Winning Moves Hell No, Hell Yeah, Outrageous Adult Card Game
  • HOW TO PLAY: The Dealer draws a Scenario Card and reads it aloud. The other players choose two of their Action Cards and play them, facedown. The Dealer shuffles the Action Cards and picks the one they definitely would not do, saying "HELL NO!" Then, they pick the Action Card they definitely would do, saying "HELL YEAH!"
  • SITUATION: While scuba diving, your wound starts bleeding, and sharks begin to circle. What do you do?
  • ACTION: Ask for an autograph! Hell No
  • ACTION: Use your jetpack to escape! Hell Yeah
  • REPEAT PLAY: With 135 Situation Cards and 387 Action Cards you'll never run out of wild predicaments

The presence of AI-controlled comrades makes the game more accessible than a strict, voice-chat-dependent simulation. Vehicles and aircraft add variety, while the PvE option gives players a way to learn maps and weapons without immediately entering the most competitive environment. The large number of combatants makes battles feel busy and chaotic, but the trade-off is that the experience is less tightly authored than a linear campaign.

Best use cases

  • New to WWII shooters: start with PvE to learn movement, objectives and squad management before relying on PvP teammates.
  • Want variety: switch between infantry, armored and aerial roles rather than repeating one mission format.
  • Need a low financial barrier: the PC version is free to play, so you can evaluate the combat loop before spending money.

Enlisted is not the closest match for Call of Duty 3’s cinematic pacing. It is better understood as an accessible squad-combat platform that offers both cooperative and competitive ways to play.

Squad 44: the realism and coordination choice

Squad 44, formerly known as Post Scriptum, is the pick for players who want WWII combat to feel organized, dangerous and dependent on communication. Steam calls it a tactical WWII FPS and describes a game built around logistics, artillery, fortifications, armor crews and proximity voice chat. Its product listing cites 20 large-scale battlefields, more than 150 WWII weapons and more than 120 vehicles (the listing dates to 2018 and was accessed in 2026).

What makes it more demanding

Squad 44 expects players to function as part of a unit. A rifleman who moves without support can be ineffective; an armor crew needs information from infantry; and a push can fail because ammunition, transport or artillery coordination was missing. Proximity voice chat makes nearby communication part of the battlefield rather than an optional social feature.

This is substantially less forgiving than Call of Duty 3’s campaign. You may need to identify a target, wait for a squad leader’s plan, move with a formation and accept that a single life can involve more preparation than shooting. The reward is a stronger sense that terrain, logistics and teamwork matter.

Minimum PC requirements

Squad 44 has the clearest hardware warning in this shortlist. Steam lists the following minimum requirements for Windows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Requirement Minimum listed specification
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit
Memory 16 GB RAM
Graphics API DirectX 12
Storage 100 GB

Those are the published minimums, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or visual preset. Check the current Steam system-requirements panel against your own hardware before installing, especially if your machine has limited storage or runs an older graphics card.

Who should choose it

Pick Squad 44 if historical atmosphere, tactical procedure and coordinated teams matter more to you than instant action. It is the least suitable option here for someone who wants to launch a game alone and immediately experience a guided story.

Easy Red 2: the best fit for solo players

Easy Red 2 is the clearest answer to the question, “Which modern WWII FPS can I play alone?” Steam states that it can be played completely solo against AI or in multiplayer. It combines squad command, combined-arms assaults and historically recreated locations. The base game includes six campaigns, with Anzio, Monte Cassino, Tunisia and Operation Flintlock among the named theaters on its Steam listing; the listing also identifies two additional campaigns.

Why it works without a squad

Easy Red 2 does not require you to assemble a reliable group of human players before the battle becomes functional. AI opponents and friendly units keep the battlefield active, while squad commands let you influence how your side approaches an objective. You can therefore play at your own pace, retry difficult sections and learn the systems without depending on voice chat.

Its combined-arms approach also gives solo players more to manage than a corridor shooter. Infantry movement, support from vehicles and the arrangement of your squad all affect an assault. That flexibility is useful if you enjoy experimenting with approaches, but it also means the game feels like a tactical sandbox rather than a sequence of precisely choreographed Call of Duty 3 missions.

When to choose it over the multiplayer games

  • Choose Easy Red 2 if you need reliable solo access rather than a server population.
  • Choose it if several historical theaters are more important than blockbuster presentation.
  • Choose it if you want to direct a squad while still controlling a first-person character.

Players seeking the most polished, linear campaign may find its sandbox structure less focused. Players seeking freedom and repeatable AI battles will find that structure an advantage.

How the four games compare by the feature you miss

Campaign and solo support

Easy Red 2 is the only game in this shortlist explicitly described as fully playable solo against AI. Enlisted includes PvE as well as PvP, giving you a noncompetitive way to play, but its identity is still built around squad combat rather than a traditional authored campaign. Hell Let Loose and Squad 44 are primarily team-based online experiences, so they are poor substitutes if your main goal is a self-contained story.

Battle scale

Hell Let Loose’s 100-player battles (Steam listing, 2021; accessed in 2026) provide a defined large-scale multiplayer experience with a frontline that can move during the match. Enlisted emphasizes hundreds of soldiers, tanks and aircraft, creating a denser spectacle around the squad you command. Squad 44 uses 20 large battlefields and spreads its action across tactical objectives, while Easy Red 2 focuses on controllable AI forces and sandbox assaults rather than a headline player count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Realism and teamwork

Squad 44 demands the most communication and coordination. Hell Let Loose is also tactical, but its structure is easier to approach if you are moving from an arcade shooter. Easy Red 2 sits between a shooter and a tactical sandbox because you can play alone while still directing units. Enlisted is the most accessible entry point, with AI squad members and PvE support reducing the pressure on a new player.

Vehicles and combined arms

All four games include meaningful interaction between infantry and vehicles, but the emphasis differs. Hell Let Loose makes tanks and artillery part of the frontline battle. Squad 44 treats armor, logistics and fortifications as coordinated roles. Enlisted places infantry squads in battles that also contain tanks and aircraft. Easy Red 2 uses combined-arms assaults as part of its solo-capable sandbox. None should be chosen solely because it contains vehicles; choose according to how much planning and teamwork you want around them.

Legacy campaign alternatives

If what you miss most is Call of Duty 3’s linear World War II storytelling, older games may be closer than any current large-scale multiplayer title. Similarity results place the following among the closest historical alternatives:

Game Why it may appeal to a Call of Duty 3 fan Current-PC caution
Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 World War II campaign design with a stronger emphasis on directing small-unit tactics Verify modern Windows compatibility and current storefront status before buying
Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway A later entry in the same tactical WWII campaign tradition Verify modern Windows compatibility and current storefront status before buying
Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault A period WWII first-person campaign set in the Pacific theater Verify modern Windows compatibility and current storefront status before buying
Medal of Honor: Airborne A WWII campaign built around airborne operations and replayable combat spaces Verify modern Windows compatibility and current storefront status before buying

Call of Duty: WWII is the obvious later-series option for anyone who wants a polished, linear WWII campaign. However, a current official PC storefront page was not verified for this comparison, so check live availability, edition details and support for your version of Windows before treating it as a purchase recommendation.

How to choose without wasting money or time

  1. Decide whether you need a campaign. If you require a self-contained solo experience, start with Easy Red 2. If PvE is enough and you want a free entry point, try Enlisted.
  2. Decide how much teamwork you can tolerate. Choose Hell Let Loose for tactical multiplayer that remains more approachable; choose Squad 44 only if communication, logistics and formal coordination sound appealing.
  3. Decide whether scale or authorship matters more. Large, shifting operations point to Hell Let Loose or Enlisted. Mission structure and historical campaign progression point toward Easy Red 2 or a legacy title.
  4. Check your hardware. Squad 44 lists Windows 10 64-bit, 16 GB RAM, DirectX 12 and 100 GB storage as minimums. Check the current requirements for every other game on its store page rather than assuming a similar visual style means similar performance.
  5. Check the current service conditions. Multiplayer populations, prices, editions and storefront availability change. Confirm those details immediately before purchase, particularly for older campaign games.

Final recommendation

For most players asking for a modern replacement, start with Hell Let Loose: it best captures the scale, combined arms and frontline movement of a contemporary WWII battle. Choose Enlisted when free-to-play access and a forgiving squad system matter more than a scripted campaign. Choose Squad 44 for the deepest realism and communication requirements, provided your PC meets its published minimums. Choose Easy Red 2 when playing alone is non-negotiable. For a traditional linear campaign, investigate the legacy alternatives with current compatibility and storefront status checked first.
