What changes for base building in PvP and PvE?
PvP: building under threat
In PvP, a base can be both a project and a target. Other players may be able to damage structures, steal stored resources, or attack while you are away, depending on the game’s rules. That pressure can make defenses, location, and cooperation with teammates part of the building experience. It also means construction and stored resources may be lost in a raid.

PvE: building with fewer player attacks
PvE usually removes direct player-versus-player attacks, making construction and exploration less exposed to other players. It does not necessarily make a base permanent: some servers remove structures after inactivity, wipe periodically, or restrict where players can build. Nor does PvE prevent every conflict over space, access, or shared resources.
How the rules differ in specific games
ARK: Survival Ascended
Studio Wildcard’s December 27, 2023 mode guide describes PvP as allowing players to damage or kill one another and damage or destroy other tribes’ buildings or kill their creatures. Its PvE description bars direct damage between players and damage to other tribes’ creatures or structures, but notes an inactivity demolish timer that can remove structures after no tribe member logs in for a specified period.
#1 Best Overall
- Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dyno herd
- Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
- Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
- Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
- Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout
Server format matters too. The same guide describes Small Tribes with a six-player tribe limit and no alliances, and says ARKpocalypse can run as PvP or PvE and automatically resets after a month. These are examples in that guide, not guarantees about every current listing; check the rules for the server you plan to join.
PvE also has a social contract. Studio Wildcard’s Official Network conduct rules prohibit behavior such as building at another tribe’s base, blocking access, and intentionally using wild creatures to destroy a player’s base. The rules may change without notice.
Rust Softcore
Rust Softcore is a gentler PvP format, not PvE. Facepunch’s Server Gamemodes documentation lists a maximum team size of four, lower PvP damage, partial inventory retention after death, and protections related to raiding. It describes a 48-hour restriction on raiders sealing or griefing a base after breaking its Tool Cupboard, and says half of base-storage loot is retained when a base is raided. The same documentation warns that changing game modes mid-wipe resets players and inventory.
Facepunch’s Common Ground update describes Softcore raid windows. The default is 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the server’s local time. Outside the window, a qualifying Tool Cupboard protects building blocks and doors, but deployables and an unprotected cupboard may still be attacked. The cupboard must be at least one hour old to block raids. These are mode rules and settings, not a promise that every Rust server uses identical protections.

OXIDE: Survival Island
The OXIDE server-modes guide describes its PvP option as allowing base raids and its PvE option as disabling attacks on other players and protecting bases with a cupboard. This applies to OXIDE’s service; it should not be assumed to describe PvE or PvP in other games.
What to check before choosing a server
Read the specific server’s rules rather than relying on its mode label. Look for these details:
- Raidability: Can other players damage building pieces, doors, storage, or defenses?
- Offline protection: Are raids allowed at any time, limited to a window, or restricted while you are away? Which structures or objects are protected?
- Persistence: Do structures decay or get demolished after inactivity? When does the server wipe or reset?
- Building constraints: Are there location restrictions or structure limits? Are players prohibited from blocking access?
- Social rules: Are team sizes, alliances, or raid conduct regulated, and how are griefing disputes handled?
- Your preferred tension: Do you want other players to create risk and competition, or would you rather focus on environmental challenges and construction?
Is PvP base building worth the risk?
It is worth considering if defending a build and the possibility of raiding others are central to the fun for you. If losing stored resources or rebuilding after an attack would spoil the experience, PvE is likely the better fit. A middle ground such as Rust Softcore may suit players who want PvP but prefer defined raid windows and partial protections; check the server’s settings before assuming those rules apply.
There is no established measured comparison showing that PvP or PvE produces better bases or longer-lasting play. The practical difference is the kind of risk and interaction each ruleset allows, not a universal advantage in building quality.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can other players raid my base in PvE?
It depends on the game and server. ARK: Survival Ascended’s documented PvE rules bar damage to other tribes’ structures, but include an inactivity demolish timer. Check the target server’s current rules for its exact protections.
Does PvE mean my base will last forever?
No. Inactivity demolish timers, decay rules, and server wipes can remove structures even without player raids.
Is Rust Softcore a PvE mode?
No. Facepunch describes Softcore as a gentler version of vanilla Rust that retains PvP and raiding, with mode-specific protections and raid windows.
