SIGNALIS is the closest overall match for Silver Pines fans: it combines cryptic psychological horror, oppressive atmosphere, and survival-horror resource pressure. Choose Darkwood for harsher 2D exploration and scarcity, Tormented Souls for classic puzzle-heavy survival-horror structure, or Detention for story-first psychological dread and tragedy.

What makes Silver Pines distinctive?

Silver Pines is described on Steam as “a survival horror metroidvania set in small town America.” Wych Elm developed it and Team17 published it. You play private investigator Red Walker, who arrives in Silver Pines while investigating the disappearance of musician Eddie Velvet.

The unusual part is not any single feature. Silver Pines combines several traditions that are usually separated: tense survival-horror combat, difficult puzzles, scarce resources, locked doors, hidden routes, limited inventory space, monster encounters, and metroidvania-style exploration. Its hand-animated 2.5D presentation gives those systems a gritty, side-on visual identity.

The official Steam Community description summarizes that blend as “the tense combat, difficult puzzles, and scarce resources of the survival horror genre with metroidvania exploration and a gritty 2.5D hand-animated art style.” PC Gamer has framed it as a 2D Resident Evil-inspired metroidvania with a dash of Twin Peaks. That comparison explains why people search for games like Silver Pines, 2D Silent Hill-like games, and psychological horror metroidvanias at the same time.

No other recommendation below duplicates all of those ingredients. The useful question is which part matters most to you: psychological ambiguity, 2D atmosphere, old-school puzzle structure, or narrative tragedy.

Best games like Silver Pines at a glance

Game Best match for Where it differs from Silver Pines Choose it when you want
SIGNALIS Psychological survival horror and cryptic storytelling Science-fiction setting, different viewpoint, and no small-town 2.5D metroidvania structure The closest overall thematic and mechanical fit
Darkwood Oppressive 2D atmosphere, scarcity, and uncertainty Top-down survival-sandbox structure instead of side-on metroidvania exploration Fear built around hostile environments and limited supplies
Tormented Souls Classic survival-horror puzzles and locked-room progression Three-dimensional fixed-perspective presentation rather than 2D or 2.5D Resident Evil- and Silent Hill-style mechanics
Detention Psychological dread, symbolism, and tragedy Less combat and less inventory-management pressure A story-first horror experience focused on emotional unease

How to use this list

These are not four versions of the same game. They represent four different interpretations of what makes Silver Pines appealing. SIGNALIS is the closest overall thematic recommendation. Darkwood is the strongest 2D atmosphere and scarcity match. Tormented Souls is the closest classic survival-horror mechanics match, even though it is 3D. Detention is the strongest narrative-psychological match, but it gives up much of the combat and inventory pressure.

That distinction matters if you are specifically searching for 2D survival horror with puzzles. A game can share Silver Pines’ mood without sharing its camera, or share its locked-door progression without sharing its hand-animated art. The explanations below identify the trade-off instead of treating “similar” as a claim of identical design.

SIGNALIS: the closest overall match for Silver Pines fans

Why it fits

SIGNALIS is the strongest recommendation if your favorite part of Silver Pines is the combination of an unreadable mystery, oppressive mood, and survival-horror logistics. It is a cryptic psychological survival-horror game in which the story’s meaning is not handed to you in a straightforward sequence. Environmental clues, fragmented information, and uncertainty carry as much weight as direct exposition.

That approach matches the psychological side of Silver Pines more closely than a conventional action platformer would. Both games invite you to treat locations, locked spaces, and discovered objects as pieces of a larger mystery rather than as a simple route from one combat arena to the next.

The comparison also works at the level of pressure. Survival horror is not only about fighting monsters; it is about deciding what to carry, what to investigate, and when to risk entering an unfamiliar area. SIGNALIS belongs in this list because item management and atmosphere reinforce each other. A discovery can be useful, ominous, or both, and the uncertainty makes ordinary exploration feel consequential.

Where the match is not exact

SIGNALIS is science fiction rather than a surreal small-town investigation. Its viewpoint and presentation also differ from Silver Pines’ hand-animated 2.5D design. You should not expect a metroidvania map or a one-to-one recreation of Red Walker’s investigation. The similarity is strongest in tone, ambiguity, item pressure, and the way the horror grows from what you do not understand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is therefore a better answer to “games like SIGNALIS and Silver Pines” than to “games with exactly the same camera.” If the side-on presentation is your non-negotiable requirement, Darkwood is the more natural visual comparison, while Tormented Souls better matches the traditional room-by-room structure.

Who should play it

  • Players looking for games like SIGNALIS and Silver Pines with cryptic psychological storytelling.
  • Readers who enjoy survival-horror inventory decisions as much as combat.
  • Anyone who prefers bleak atmosphere and implication to constant jump scares.
  • Players willing to interpret fragments and unanswered questions rather than receive a fully explicit explanation.

If you want one recommendation without deciding which Silver Pines feature matters most, start here. It is the best all-round answer, even though its world and camera perspective are different.

Darkwood: oppressive 2D horror built around scarcity and uncertainty

Why it fits

Darkwood is the right choice when the defining Silver Pines quality for you is fear of the unknown. Its top-down structure creates a different visual relationship with danger, but it remains a strongly 2D horror experience built around exploration, hostile surroundings, scarce resources, and indirect storytelling.

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

Rather than making every threat obvious, Darkwood uses uncertainty as a system. You must read spaces, decide how far to push an expedition, and judge whether a resource is worth the risk of spending it. That makes the environment itself feel antagonistic. The tension comes from not knowing what is beyond the next boundary and from understanding that supplies cannot solve every problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is why Darkwood often works for readers who ask for horror games with limited resources and inventory management. Scarcity is not a decorative difficulty setting; it changes how you explore. You weigh curiosity against safety, and the decision to continue can be as important as the encounter waiting at the end of a path.

Where the match is not exact

Darkwood is not a side-on metroidvania equivalent. Its top-down perspective and stronger survival-sandbox emphasis change the rhythm of exploration. Progress is less about reproducing Silver Pines’ locked-door route through a small town and more about managing exposure to a dangerous world.

Choose it for mood and resource pressure, not for an identical camera, map structure, or puzzle cadence. It is a mood-and-mechanics match rather than a perspective match. Someone who mainly wants platforming traversal and ability-gated routes may find the structure less familiar, while someone who wants oppressive 2D atmosphere may find the difference worthwhile.

Who should play it

  • Players searching for oppressive 2D horror where scarcity shapes every excursion.
  • Fans of environmental storytelling who prefer discovering rules through observation.
  • Anyone who wants psychological tension without relying on a stream of scripted jump scares.
  • Players who enjoy deciding when to retreat instead of treating every area as a puzzle with one safe solution.

For readers who describe Silver Pines as “the game where the town and its shortages made me nervous,” Darkwood is probably the best follow-up.

Tormented Souls: the mechanics-first classic survival-horror alternative

Why it fits

Tormented Souls is the strongest recommendation for the classic survival-horror backbone that Silver Pines invokes. Its official Steam description emphasizes fixed-perspective action-adventure design, exploration, puzzles, atmospheric horror, and a modernized presentation. It is built around the familiar cycle of searching rooms, finding usable objects, opening previously inaccessible areas, and deciding how to spend limited resources.

That makes it particularly useful for people searching for games like Resident Evil but in 2D, even though Tormented Souls itself is three-dimensional. The important overlap is structural: locked-door progression, difficult puzzle solving, backtracking, and the pressure created when every item or encounter has a cost.

Its puzzles also make the comparison concrete. Silver Pines presents difficult puzzles as one part of a broader metroidvania-survival blend; Tormented Souls puts the classic puzzle-and-room relationship closer to the center. If your favorite moment is recognizing how an object changes access to an earlier location, this is the recommendation that most directly follows that instinct.

Where the match is not exact

Tormented Souls uses a 3D fixed-perspective presentation, so it does not satisfy a strict requirement for 2D or 2.5D art. Its lineage is more visibly rooted in traditional room-based survival horror than in metroidvania movement. If side-on exploration is non-negotiable, SIGNALIS or Darkwood will be closer visual choices.

Its value is that it isolates the classic mechanics Silver Pines blends into its own format. You get a clearer old-school survival-horror framework without the expectation that it should behave like a platforming map. The trade-off is visual and structural, not a reason to dismiss it as unrelated.

Who should play it

  • Players who prioritize classic survival horror with difficult puzzles.
  • Fans of fixed-perspective exploration and deliberate backtracking.
  • Anyone who wants a modern Resident Evil-style alternative and does not require a 2D viewpoint.
  • Players who enjoy locked-room problem solving as much as monster encounters.

Pick Tormented Souls when your ideal Silver Pines follow-up is less about animation style and more about the satisfaction of solving a locked-room problem while preserving enough resources to survive the next encounter.

Detention: a story-first psychological horror choice

Why it fits

Detention belongs on this list for a different reason. It is the strongest choice when “psychological horror” means narrative dread, symbolism, historical trauma, and tragedy rather than combat systems or inventory optimization.

Its horror is designed to unsettle emotionally and intellectually. The experience asks you to interpret what characters endure and what images, spaces, and events represent. That makes it a natural recommendation for readers drawn to the psychological and surreal side of Silver Pines’ small-town mystery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Detention is especially useful if you want a horror game that lingers through implication. The relevant similarity is not a shared resource loop; it is the willingness to let setting, memory, and symbolism carry the unease. In that sense it answers the search for a story-first psychological horror game better than a combat-focused recommendation would.

Where the match is not exact

Detention is less comparable mechanically. It places less emphasis on combat, scarce ammunition, and survival-horror inventory management. It should not be presented as the closest metroidvania or as a replacement for Silver Pines’ monster encounters and locked-door progression.

Think of it as a narrative complement: a game for the part of your taste that wants unease to linger after a scene, not necessarily a game that reproduces Silver Pines’ moment-to-moment systems. Readers seeking a difficult combat loop should choose SIGNALIS, Darkwood, or Tormented Souls first.

Who should play it

  • Players who want a story-first psychological horror game.
  • Readers more interested in symbolism and tragedy than combat mastery.
  • Anyone who prefers narrative dread over resource management.
  • Players looking for emotional and historical weight rather than a metroidvania progression system.

If your favorite Silver Pines moments are the emotionally disturbing discoveries rather than the fights, Detention is the most focused recommendation here.

Which game should you choose?

Choose SIGNALIS for the broadest overlap

Start with SIGNALIS if you want the best balance of psychological mystery, bleak atmosphere, survival-horror pressure, and cryptic storytelling. It is the recommendation least dependent on one narrow preference.

Choose Darkwood for 2D dread and scarcity

Choose Darkwood if the words “2D psychological horror” describe your priority better than “metroidvania.” Its top-down view is different, but its uncertainty, hostile environments, and resource pressure make it a strong atmospheric successor.

Choose Tormented Souls for puzzles and classic structure

Choose Tormented Souls if you want the Resident Evil and Silent Hill lineage that Silver Pines channels: rooms to search, doors to unlock, puzzles to solve, and supplies to manage. Accept the 3D fixed-perspective presentation as the trade-off for a closer mechanics match.

Choose Detention for emotional and symbolic horror

Choose Detention if you use “psychological horror” to mean tragedy, symbolism, and lingering narrative unease. It gives up much of the combat and inventory tension in exchange for a more concentrated story experience.

A practical decision guide

If you are still undecided, identify the feature you would miss most after leaving Silver Pines. Missing the mystery and ambiguity points to SIGNALIS. Missing the feeling that every excursion is dangerous points to Darkwood. Missing locked doors, difficult puzzles, and deliberate backtracking points to Tormented Souls. Missing the emotional aftershock of a disturbing revelation points to Detention.

There is also a useful tolerance test. Players who require a side-on or broadly 2D presentation should begin with Darkwood, while accepting its top-down structure. Players who require classic survival-horror room progression should begin with Tormented Souls, while accepting 3D fixed perspectives. Players who care more about the meaning of the horror than its combat loop should begin with Detention. SIGNALIS is the flexible choice for readers who can accept a science-fiction setting and a different viewpoint.

How these recommendations compare with Silver Pines

Perspective and presentation

Silver Pines’ hand-animated 2.5D look is its most visible differentiator. Darkwood is the closest broad visual category because it is a 2D horror game, but its camera is top-down. SIGNALIS has a different viewpoint and science-fiction setting. Tormented Souls is fully 3D with fixed perspectives. Detention is also a different kind of 2D presentation, aimed at narrative scenes rather than metroidvania traversal.

Exploration structure

Silver Pines combines metroidvania exploration with survival-horror gating: locked doors, hidden paths, and revisiting spaces are part of its identity. None of the four recommendations reproduces that exact combination. SIGNALIS and Tormented Souls offer the closest sense of deliberate area progression and item-based access. Darkwood substitutes a more open survival-sandbox rhythm. Detention is comparatively linear and story-led.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resource and inventory pressure

Scarcity and limited inventory space are explicit Silver Pines features. SIGNALIS and Tormented Souls are the nearest matches for making item management part of the tension. Darkwood pushes scarcity further into the overall survival structure. Detention is the outlier because its primary pressure is psychological and narrative rather than logistical.

Combat and danger

Silver Pines is built around tense combat alongside puzzles and exploration. SIGNALIS preserves the idea that fighting is a risk-management decision, while Darkwood makes environmental danger and limited supplies central to its survival rhythm. Tormented Souls keeps combat within a more traditional fixed-perspective survival-horror framework. Detention should be selected with the understanding that combat is not its defining attraction.

What “psychological” means in each game

In SIGNALIS, it means ambiguity, fragmented meaning, and an oppressive sci-fi mystery. In Darkwood, it comes from uncertainty and the inability to fully read a hostile environment. In Tormented Souls, the psychological effect is tied more closely to classic survival-horror atmosphere and isolation. In Detention, it is expressed through symbolism, trauma, and tragedy. Silver Pines sits between these approaches, using a surreal small-town investigation as the frame for its horror.

If progress becomes stuck

  1. Check whether the problem matches a softlock addressed by Hotfix 2.
  2. Confirm that the game has downloaded the latest available update through Steam.
  3. If you are seeing performance problems, try the official DirectX 11 recommendation, especially on Steam Deck.
  4. If the issue persists, record the location, action that triggered it, difficulty mode, and game version before seeking support; those details distinguish a progression bug from a general performance issue.

These status details do not change which recommendation is best. They simply establish the version context for a game that released very recently.

Bottom line for 2D psychological-horror fans

There is no perfect duplicate of Silver Pines’ hand-animated 2.5D metroidvania formula. SIGNALIS is the closest overall recommendation because it shares the cryptic psychological storytelling and survival-horror pressure. Darkwood is the best atmospheric alternative when scarcity and fear of the unknown matter most. Tormented Souls is the mechanics-first choice for classic puzzles and locked-room survival horror, while Detention is the story-first choice for symbolism, tragedy, and narrative dread.
