Boltgun 2 released on October 14, 2026, from Auroch Digital, Big Fan Games and Devolver Digital. It follows the original Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun with two playable characters, branching campaign routes, heavy weapons and enemies drawn from the forces of Nurgle, Tzeentch, Khorne and Slaanesh. The recommendations below are organized by the part of that formula you want to preserve.

What makes Boltgun 2 a useful starting point
Boltgun 2 is explicitly presented on Steam as “the brutal and fast-paced sequel to boomer shooter Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun.” Its identity comes from the collision of several systems rather than from any single weapon or setting detail.

- Two distinct protagonists: Malum Caedo and Sister of Battle Celestian Nyra Veyrath have different abilities, weapons and play styles.
- Branching single-player structure: the campaign moves through a hive city, jungle swamps and the Ark of Omen, with route choices that make the campaign less linear than a simple stage sequence.
- Heavy-weapon momentum: the chainsword, shotgun, flamer and other large weapons make close-range commitment and aggressive positioning central to fights.
- Four grimdark enemy forces: Nurgle, Tzeentch, Khorne and Slaanesh provide the factional context for the combat encounters.
- Navigation and audio options: the Steam listing mentions optional navigation tools, an automap and a guest track by Mick Gordon.
That combination creates several different definitions of a “similar” game. A player may be looking for speed, weapon variety, violent audiovisual feedback, labyrinthine maps, occult horror or a setting that feels hostile and oppressive. No single recommendation duplicates every part of Boltgun 2, so the list separates those priorities instead of pretending that all retro shooters play the same way.

1. ULTRAKILL: the best choice for speed and technical mastery
ULTRAKILL is the recommendation for players who finished Boltgun 2 wishing the combat had pushed even harder toward velocity, precision and score optimization. Steam describes it as a fast-paced, ultra-violent retro FPS that combines 1990s shooter design with character-action systems. The result is less about simply carrying a powerful gun through a corridor and more about turning movement, weapon choice and enemy positioning into a continuous performance.
Why it follows Boltgun 2 well
Its core loop rewards aggressive movement, aerial mobility, weapon variation, blood-based health recovery and style scoring. Those systems reinforce the same forward pressure that makes a chainsword or shotgun charge feel natural in Boltgun 2, but they demand more deliberate execution. Damage avoidance is not the only goal: the scoring system encourages you to maintain momentum and vary your attacks rather than settle into one safe weapon pattern.

Who should choose it
Pick ULTRAKILL when “similar” means relentless speed, demanding arenas and a high skill ceiling. It is particularly suitable if you want to replay encounters to improve movement lines or style performance instead of treating the campaign as a one-time tour. Players who mainly want the Warhammer setting, branching routes or faction-specific lore will find those elements are not the reason to choose it.
What changes from Boltgun 2
ULTRAKILL’s character-action influence makes precision and aerial control more central than Boltgun 2’s straightforward heavy-weapon fantasy. Health recovery is tied to blood, so staying close enough to exploit enemies can be strategically valuable. The mood is still violent and confrontational, but the emphasis shifts from grimdark military firepower to technical expression.
2. AMID EVIL: fantasy weapons in an arena-shooter structure
AMID EVIL is the cleanest choice if the weapons are what you want to carry forward, while the setting can change completely. Released in 2019 by Indefatigable and New Blood Interactive, it casts you as a champion reclaiming sacred weapons and ancient lands. Steam tags it as a boomer shooter, arena shooter, magic and dark fantasy game.
Why its arsenal feels familiar
Boltgun 2 treats its chainsword, shotgun, flamer and other heavy weapons as the engine of forward motion. AMID EVIL applies that same weapon-first logic to magical equipment. Each encounter is built around choosing the right tool and committing to a fight, but the audiovisual language is surreal fantasy rather than Warhammer’s industrial science fiction.

Best fit for arena-focused players
Choose AMID EVIL if you prefer combat spaces where enemy waves and weapon selection are the main puzzle. It is a better match for someone who remembers Boltgun 2’s firefights more vividly than its branching campaign geography. The game does not reproduce the named Warhammer factions or the two-character structure; its appeal is the way sacred weapons define the rhythm of each battle.
Trade-off
The tonal change is substantial. Instead of Nurgle, Tzeentch, Khorne and Slaanesh, you get ancient lands and dark fantasy imagery. That makes AMID EVIL a mechanical successor rather than a narrative one, but it is also why it works when you want familiar boomer-shooter intensity without another science-fiction setting.
3. DUSK: cult horror with classic 1990s pacing
DUSK is the strongest recommendation when atmosphere matters as much as gun feel. Its official description places you against mystical backwater cultists, possessed militants and darker forces beneath the Earth. The game is a 2018 retro FPS tagged with fast-paced, horror, gore, old-school and arena-shooter descriptors.
What it preserves
DUSK shares Boltgun 2’s preference for immediate, aggressive encounters over slow tactical clearing. Its classic pacing makes quick target selection and constant movement important, while the gore and enemy presentation keep every firefight physically threatening. If the grim hostility of Boltgun 2 is what you want to retain, DUSK’s cult setting provides a different but equally committed form of menace.
Why exploration still matters
Unlike a pure score-attack game, DUSK also supports old-school level discovery. The campaign’s subterranean and rural-horror framing gives its combat spaces an unnerving sense of place, and the level editor extends that approach beyond the shipped stages. PvP is also listed, giving the game a competitive option alongside its single-player horror campaign.
Choose it when
Select DUSK if you want a game that can be frightening between fights, not just explosive during them. Its pace remains brisk, but the occult premise and threatening environments make it a better follow-up for readers who remember Boltgun 2’s grim atmosphere as strongly as its weapons.
4. Prodeus: retro science fiction with modern presentation and multiplayer
Prodeus is the practical pick for players who want pixelated gore and science-fiction combat but also value a more modern rendering approach and extra ways to play. Its description calls it an old-school first-person shooter reimagined with modern rendering while retaining retro aesthetics and hardware-era gameplay limits.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Why it bridges old and new
Boltgun 2 deliberately fuses contemporary design expectations with boomer-shooter speed. Prodeus follows a similar principle from a different angle: the visuals use modern rendering, while the art direction and gameplay constraints evoke older hardware. That makes it easier to recommend to someone who likes retro violence but does not want every technical presentation detail to look genuinely dated.
Modes beyond the campaign
Prodeus explicitly offers single-player, online PvP, online co-op and a level editor. Those additions make it the broadest recommendation in this list for a group that wants to continue playing together after finishing a campaign. The editor also gives the game a longer tail for players who enjoy experimenting with custom maps.
Where it differs
Its science-fiction identity makes it closer to Boltgun 2 in broad genre language than AMID EVIL or DUSK, but it does not reproduce the Warhammer factions, two-character campaign or branching locations. Choose it for presentation, gore and multiplayer flexibility rather than for lore continuity.
5. HROT: the bleak, slower-burn alternative
HROT is for players who want the oppressive side of Boltgun 2 and can accept a more deliberate pace. It is set in a fictional small socialist country neighboring the Soviet Union after an unspecified disaster in 1986. The official page emphasizes dark, terrifying single-player retro-FPS horror and uses horror, gore, alternate-history and atmospheric tags.
Why the mood works
The setting replaces Warhammer’s apocalyptic theology with political and historical unease, but both games treat their worlds as hostile places rather than neutral backdrops. HROT’s atmosphere asks you to absorb tension and uncertainty instead of racing through every room at maximum speed. Its horror framing makes environmental pressure part of the experience.
Who should avoid it
HROT is not the best choice if your favorite Boltgun 2 moments were uninterrupted chainsword charges or rapid weapon swaps. The available data describes it as slower-burning and more deliberate, so the appeal lies in dread, setting and sustained tension rather than pure momentum.
Who should play it
Choose HROT when you want a grim single-player campaign that feels unsettling before the first shot is fired. It is the list’s clearest tonal recommendation, even though it is the least direct match for Boltgun 2’s high-speed combat.

6. CULTIC: sliding, explosives and hands-on improvisation
CULTIC begins with the player crawling from a grave and fighting through a mysterious cult using guns and dynamite. Its description specifically emphasizes shooting, sliding, blasting, ducking and dodging. That vocabulary makes it a strong match for players who want movement to be an active part of every engagement rather than a way to travel between shooting galleries.
Why its combat feels physical
The combination of sliding, evasive movement and throwable explosives creates encounters that reward quick decisions at close and medium range. Dynamite adds a second layer to the usual firearm loop: you can reshape a fight with an explosion, then use movement to exploit the opening. This makes CULTIC a natural follow-up if Boltgun 2’s chainsword and flamer encouraged you to take risks instead of shooting from safety.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The enemy threat is a mysterious cult rather than the named Chaos powers. Its horror is grounded in ritual violence and graveyard imagery, giving the game a more explicitly occult identity. The shared element is commitment: both games make aggressive action feel like the safest way to keep control of a dangerous encounter.
Best reason to pick it
Pick CULTIC when you want the most tactile movement-and-explosives alternative on this list. It is less about score chasing than ULTRAKILL and less about map archaeology than Ion Fury, but it gives every fight a strong physical rhythm.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Ion Fury: the choice for exploration, secrets and classic map density
Ion Fury is a 2019 FPS from Voidpoint and 3D Realms built around the Build Engine tradition associated with Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood. Its official page highlights fast combat across large, secret-packed levels, along with level-editor and modding tags.
Why it belongs on this list
Ion Fury is not the closest match for Warhammer factions or heavy grimdark weaponry. Its value is structural: if you enjoyed following optional navigation tools and an automap through Boltgun 2’s branching spaces, Ion Fury offers a more concentrated version of old-school map exploration. Keys, switches, hidden rooms and route knowledge are as important as raw aim.

The large levels make progress feel like a spatial puzzle. You are not simply clearing one arena after another; you are learning how rooms connect and checking whether a newly acquired key opens an earlier path. That makes Ion Fury the best recommendation for players whose favorite Boltgun 2 moments involved searching, backtracking and finding secrets.

Long-term replay value
The level editor and modding support give the game a community-created dimension beyond its main campaign. Choose it when you want a retro shooter that can keep supplying new maps and experiments, even though its setting and weapon identity are distinct from Warhammer 40,000.
Choose your next game by the part of Boltgun 2 you miss
If you miss speed and mastery
Play ULTRAKILL first. Its aerial movement, style scoring and blood-based healing make aggression a technical discipline. CULTIC is the alternative if you want speed expressed through sliding, dodging and dynamite rather than score optimization.
If you miss oversized weapons
Choose AMID EVIL. Its sacred magical weapons preserve the weapon-forward structure while moving the action into dark fantasy. Prodeus is the better option if you also want retro science-fiction presentation and multiplayer.
If you miss horror and oppressive enemies
Choose DUSK for fast occult horror or HROT for a slower, more atmospheric campaign. DUSK keeps the classic shooter pace; HROT gives more space to dread and alternate-history unease.
If you miss searching through levels
Pick Ion Fury. Its large, secret-packed Build Engine maps put route finding and key hunting at the center, making it the most exploration-focused recommendation here.
If you want to keep playing with others
Prodeus is the only game in this set whose cited description explicitly lists both online co-op and online PvP. DUSK lists PvP and a level editor, while Ion Fury lists editing and modding rather than online modes.

A practical play order
- Start with ULTRAKILL if your immediate goal is to keep the combat intensity at its highest.
- Move to AMID EVIL when you want another weapon-led campaign but are ready for fantasy instead of grimdark science fiction.
- Use DUSK or HROT as your horror branch: DUSK for speed, HROT for atmosphere and a slower burn.
- Choose Prodeus when co-op, PvP or user-made maps matter more than matching Boltgun 2’s factional identity.
- Finish with CULTIC or Ion Fury according to your preferred kind of replay: physical explosive combat in CULTIC, or secrets and map mastery in Ion Fury.
That order moves from the closest mechanical continuation to the recommendations that preserve one specific ingredient—horror, exploration, multiplayer or improvisational movement—while changing the surrounding style.
