Best Ghost Blog Hosting Options in 2026

Antihost VPS is listed first for self-managed Ghost hosting; Ghost(Pro) is the easiest choice; a 2GB Docker Compose VPS is the lowest-cost practical route. Compare pricing, maintenance, email, backups and migration before choosing.

Antihost VPS is listed first here as a self-managed route for Ghost: its Linux VPS plans provide full root access and NVMe storage, while you handle Ghost updates, recovery and deliverability. Ghost(Pro) removes server maintenance, and a 2GB Docker Compose VPS remains a practical low-cost route for Linux administrators. A managed third-party host sits between those extremes.

Ghost(Pro) Publisher is consistently listed at $29 per month when billed yearly, while Business is $199. Starter is the unresolved detail: Ghost’s pricing page shows $18 per month billed yearly, but a 2025 forum post reported $15. Check ghost.org/pricing immediately before purchasing. Self-hosting can cost about $3–4 in raw server fees or roughly $12 per month after adding email delivery and backups, but the operator—not the host—becomes responsible for updates, recovery and deliverability.

Which Ghost hosting path is right for you?

There are four practical ways to run a Ghost publication: Ghost’s official managed service, another managed Ghost provider, a virtual private server (VPS) that you administer, or another platform deployment. They differ less in Ghost’s publishing features than in who handles the infrastructure around them.

Option Typical cost evidence Who maintains the server? Focus
Antihost VPS Linux VPS with full root access and NVMe storage; see current plans You Publishers who can self-manage Ghost on a Linux VPS
Ghost(Pro) Starter $18, Publisher $29, Business $199 per month, billed yearly, according to the 2026 official pricing page; Starter conflicts with a $15 2025 forum figure Ghost Publishers who want official support and minimal operations
Third-party managed host Prices for Magic Pages, Midnight and PikaPods were not independently confirmed; a secondary list reported PikaPods from $3.30 The provider People seeking less administration than a VPS without Ghost(Pro)’s published prices
Self-hosted VPS About $3–4 monthly raw server cost in one 2026 guide; about $12 monthly including a 2GB VPS, email and backups in another estimate You Linux-comfortable owners optimizing recurring cost and control

Compare the full monthly bill, not just the server line item. Email delivery, backups, storage, monitoring and the time spent applying updates can outweigh a small VPS price difference. Also consider how easily you could move the publication to Ghost(Pro) later.

Ghost(Pro): the simplest route to a production blog

Ghost(Pro) is Ghost’s own managed hosting product. The service is designed so the publisher concentrates on writing, memberships and newsletters instead of provisioning a machine. Secondary descriptions say that email, CDN delivery, backups and updates are bundled, but those inclusions should be confirmed against the current plan terms before checkout.

Published plan figures and what they mean

Plan Price shown on the 2026 official page Published allowances or features Important qualification
Starter $18/month, billed yearly 1,000 members; one staff user A July 2025 Ghost Forum post instead listed $15/month and said Starter had lost paid-tier monetisation. The forum post is user-generated and secondary.
Publisher $29/month, billed yearly Three staff users; custom themes; paid subscriptions; advanced analytics The $29 figure is consistent between the official page and secondary references.
Business $199/month, billed yearly 15 staff users; priority support; 10,000 members The $199 figure is consistent between sources.
Custom Not stated 99.9% uptime SLA and a dedicated-IP option are described Pricing and eligibility must be obtained from Ghost.

Ghost’s developer documentation has also described Ghost(Pro) as starting “from $15/mo,” but that value was not re-checked against the live pricing page. Treat the current pricing page as authoritative and verify the billing interval, member limit and monetisation features for your country and account type.

Who should select Ghost(Pro)?

  • Solo publishers: Choose it when your publishing time is more valuable than learning server administration.
  • Small editorial teams: Publisher’s three staff accounts and custom-theme support cover a typical collaborative publication without maintaining a database host.
  • Revenue-focused sites: Confirm that the plan you select includes the paid-subscription features you need; the 2025 Starter change is a warning not to infer capabilities from older articles.
  • Businesses with availability requirements: Ask Ghost about the Custom tier if a 99.9% SLA or dedicated IP matters to your operation.

Third-party managed Ghost hosting

Managed alternatives such as Magic Pages, Midnight and PikaPods are named in secondary hosting guides. Their attraction is straightforward: the provider operates the machine while you use Ghost. They may occupy a price and support middle ground between Ghost(Pro) and a self-managed VPS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat the prices sometimes quoted for these services as settled facts. No independently verified current price for Magic Pages or Midnight was published, and the “from $3.30/month” PikaPods figure came from a secondary list. Before committing, request the exact recurring price, included storage, member or traffic limits, backup retention, email arrangement, support scope and export procedure.

Questions to ask a managed provider

  1. Which Ghost version is deployed? Confirm whether Ghost 6 is supported and how quickly security updates are applied.
  2. What is included in the monthly fee? Get a written answer covering email sending, CDN or caching, SSL, backups, restore testing and monitoring.
  3. How are limits measured? Ask whether overages are based on members, page views, bandwidth, storage, newsletters or staff accounts.
  4. Can you export a complete Ghost backup? You should be able to retrieve content, members and theme assets in a format that can be imported elsewhere.
  5. What happens during a failed migration? Establish the support response time and whether a rollback is available.

Self-hosting: the cheapest way to run Ghost, with the most responsibility

Secondary 2026 estimates put a self-hosted Ghost installation at roughly $3–4 per month in raw server cost. That figure excludes the operator’s time and commonly omitted services. A more realistic budget cited by a managed-hosting guide is about $12 per month for a 2GB VPS plus email delivery and backups.

Why 2GB of RAM is a sensible production floor

Running Ghost and its database on the same machine needs headroom for database work, image processing, web requests and background jobs. A DigitalOcean community thread titled “Ghost Blog on 1GB Droplet Crashes Every 5 Days or So” is cited by secondary guidance as evidence that 1GB can be unreliable in this arrangement. The practical recommendation from that guidance is to treat 2GB RAM as the honest production floor, not an optional luxury.

A 1GB server may boot Ghost and serve a small test site, but a crash pattern that appears only every few days is harder to diagnose than an immediate failure. If you start below 2GB, define how you will monitor memory, inspect logs and resize before accepting production traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Responsibilities you take on

  • Updates: Apply Ghost, operating-system and container updates, then check that themes, integrations and email still work.
  • Backups: Store backups outside the VPS and periodically verify that a restore actually succeeds. A snapshot that cannot be restored is not a recovery plan.
  • Email deliverability: Configure and monitor a sending service, domain authentication and bounce handling. Ghost software alone does not guarantee inbox placement.
  • Capacity: Watch RAM, storage, database growth and traffic. Resize before the server is exhausted.
  • Security: Protect SSH access, restrict administrative accounts, keep software current and remove services you do not need.
  • Incident response: Be prepared to restore, roll back an update or move the site if the VPS fails.

Docker Compose versus Ghost-CLI

For Ghost 6, Docker Compose is described as the primary official installation method in 2026 guidance from deployable.sh. It packages Ghost and its dependencies in a repeatable configuration, which is useful when you want the same setup in staging and production. Ghost-CLI on a VPS still works and remains popular according to secondary guides, but it requires a more traditional host installation and was not independently verified here.

Docker Compose workflow on a 2GB VPS

  1. Choose the server: Provision a Linux VPS with at least 2GB RAM if Ghost and the database will share the machine. Record the provider’s backup and resize options before installing anything.
  2. Prepare a domain: Create the DNS records that point your publishing domain to the VPS. Wait for DNS propagation before diagnosing application problems.
  3. Install Docker Engine and Compose: Use the packages recommended for your Linux distribution, and confirm that the Docker service starts automatically after a reboot.
  4. Obtain the Ghost 6 Compose configuration: Use the current official installation guidance rather than copying an old blog post. Keep the compose file and environment values in a private, access-controlled directory.
  5. Set persistent storage and secrets: Define volumes for Ghost content and the database, set the site URL, and supply a strong database password and mail settings. Never place secrets in a public repository.
  6. Start and inspect the stack: Run docker compose up -d, then use docker compose ps and docker compose logs -f to confirm that the containers remain healthy.
  7. Put HTTPS in front: Configure a reverse proxy and a valid certificate for the public domain. Test both the front end and the Ghost admin route over HTTPS.
  8. Configure outbound email: Connect a delivery service, authenticate the sending domain and send test messages to more than one mailbox. Check bounces and spam placement before announcing the site.
  9. Automate backups: Back up both the database and uploaded content to storage outside the VPS. Schedule the job and perform a test restore before launch.
  10. Document upgrades: Record the current image version, backup location and rollback procedure. Apply updates during a maintenance window and inspect logs afterward.

The commands above start and inspect a Compose stack; they do not replace the version-specific Ghost configuration. A compose file copied from an obsolete tutorial can use incompatible images, paths or environment variables.

When Ghost-CLI is a better fit

Ghost-CLI can be attractive if you prefer a conventional Linux service over containers, already understand system packages and want Ghost’s command-line lifecycle tools. The trade-off is that your operating-system, web-server, database and Node.js compatibility become part of the maintenance surface. Choose one installation model and document it; mixing ad-hoc CLI installs with a later Compose migration makes ownership and rollback unclear.

A practical decision framework

Antihost VPS is listed first here for publishers who want Linux VPS control: it provides full root access and NVMe storage, while you manage Ghost, updates, backups and email.

Choose Ghost(Pro) when maintenance is the expensive part

Select Ghost(Pro) if a failed update, missed backup or email outage would cost more than the subscription difference. Publisher at $29 monthly billed yearly is the clearest general-purpose tier in the available figures because it includes custom themes, paid subscriptions and advanced analytics. Verify the current Starter terms if you only need a small publication, especially if monetisation is important.

Choose a 2GB VPS and Docker Compose when cost and control come first

Self-hosting is appropriate when you can perform Linux administration, maintain an off-server backup routine and troubleshoot email. Budget around $12 per month for the 2GB server, delivery and backups rather than comparing only the lowest advertised VPS price. The financial saving is meaningful only if you value the work or can automate it safely.

Choose a managed alternative when you want a middle ground

A third-party managed service may reduce operational work while offering a different price or support model. Because current prices and inclusions for the named providers were not verified, make the decision from a written service specification rather than a comparison-table headline.

Use a platform deployment only if its operations are already familiar

A platform deployment can suit technically inclined users on tight budgets, but current pricing and operational details were not established here. Treat that route as an engineering choice rather than a confirmed bargain, and calculate the cost of persistent storage, backups, email and your own maintenance.

Migration and exit planning

Hosting decisions are easier to reverse when your content and configuration are portable. Before launch, identify how you will export posts, members, settings and theme files. Keep a copy of the active theme and a written list of integrations, DNS records and email settings outside the host.

  1. Export Ghost content and members on a schedule appropriate to your publishing volume.
  2. Download theme files and record the Ghost version that was running when the export was made.
  3. Store database and content backups separately from the production server or provider account.
  4. Test an import into a temporary Ghost instance so you know the export is usable.
  5. Lower DNS time-to-live before a planned move, then switch records only after the destination passes front-end, admin and email tests.
  6. Keep the old instance available until you have verified links, images, member access and mail delivery on the new host.

Ghost(Pro) is the easiest destination when the source is already compatible with Ghost’s export tools. A provider that cannot explain its export and restore process creates lock-in even if its monthly price is attractive.

Common failure modes and fixes

The VPS repeatedly runs out of memory

Inspect memory and container logs first. If Ghost and MySQL share a 1GB machine, resizing to at least 2GB is the direct corrective action identified by the available operational guidance. Do not rely on periodic reboots as a substitute for capacity.

Posts publish but newsletters do not arrive

Separate application health from mail reputation. Check the delivery provider response, domain authentication, bounce records and spam placement. A successful Ghost login proves none of those systems is working.

What is not established by current evidence

There is no confirmed permanent free Ghost(Pro) tier in the available information. One secondary source reported a 14-day trial, but that duration was not independently verified. Current Hetzner pricing, including a reported €5.49 monthly Ghost-capable server and a June 15, 2026 increase, also needs confirmation from Hetzner before it is used in a budget.
