Why it works for a mixed group
BMC4 adds content around the normal Minecraft survival loop instead of requiring everyone to learn a completely different game. Players who enjoy building can concentrate on improved structures and scenery, explorers can search for new places and encounters, and combat-focused players have additional mobs and bosses to pursue. That division of interests makes it a practical shared-world choice when nobody has agreed on a specialist modpack.

The pack is published by LunaPixelStudios and is listed for Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.20 with Forge on CurseForge; its Modrinth page lists 1.20.1. Select the exact file your server host or launcher supports rather than assuming every BMC4 download is interchangeable.
What a first session looks like
- Create or join a server using the same BMC4 release selected by the group.
- Spend the opening day on ordinary survival tasks: shelter, food, tools and a safe spawn area.
- Use the pack’s additional structures and world content as destinations for group expeditions rather than splitting immediately into unrelated solo projects.
- When everyone is equipped, schedule a boss or longer exploration trip so players with different interests have a common objective.
This approach preserves a recognizable early game while giving the group reasons to keep returning to the same world.
Who should choose another pack
BMC4 is less suitable if your group specifically wants a narrated campaign with quest objectives, in which case Prominence II is the better fit. It is also less suitable for players who want the broadest possible automation and mod-interaction playground; ATM9 is designed for that kind of long-term sandbox.

Prominence II is built around RPG progression, quest lines and a shared campaign. Instead of treating added mods as a menu of optional systems, it gives a group a reason to follow objectives together. That structure helps friends who prefer guided progress over deciding independently what to automate, build or explore next.

The 1.20.1 release is Fabric. CurseForge lists file version 4.0.0hf for 1.20.1, the Modrinth page lists a 1.20.1 Fabric build, and GDLauncher identifies Fabric as a requirement. There is no Forge 1.20.1 build to substitute if your existing server is Forge.
How to organize a shared campaign
- Agree that one person will advance quests only after the group has had time to catch up. This prevents a player with more free time from pushing the story far ahead.
- Designate a shared base and storage area before exploring separate regions.
- Keep a simple written record of the current quest objective, required items and the next group meeting point.
- Reserve major encounters for scheduled sessions so nobody misses a story beat or reward.
These are coordination practices rather than pack features, but they matter more in a campaign pack than in an open-ended sandbox: the order in which players complete objectives affects what the rest of the group sees.
Loader implications
Fabric and Forge are different mod-loader environments. Installing the Fabric pack into a Forge profile, or mixing loader-specific server files, will not create a compatible Prominence II installation. Start with a clean profile, select the 1.20.1 Fabric instance, and let the launcher install the pack’s required dependencies. Every participant should launch that same profile.
3. All the Mods 9: the long-term sandbox
Why groups stay with it
ATM9 is the choice for friends who want a world that can support large building projects, extensive automation and a long list of optional systems. Its breadth gives different players room to specialize: one can focus on infrastructure, another on resource processing, another on construction and another on exploration. The trade-off is a steeper learning curve and more decisions about which systems are worth adopting.

ATM9 is published by ATMTeam and the CurseForge listing shows Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.20 with Forge. No official Modrinth page is established here, so do not assume that a Modrinth download with a similar name is an official equivalent.
A good progression plan
- Begin with a compact shared base and clearly labeled storage rather than scattering machines across individual starter houses.
- Choose one early resource or power path as a group standard so newcomers can understand how the base works.
- Split into specialist projects only after a reliable shared supply of food, tools and basic materials exists.
- Document machine chains and important coordinates in a shared note. A broad pack becomes frustrating when only one player knows how a system works.
- Set milestones—such as a new production line, a completed building district or an expedition—so progress remains visible during a long playthrough.
ATM9 rewards groups that enjoy planning. If your friends mainly want to log in, explore and build without studying many systems, BMC4 will usually create less friction.
How to choose between the three

Choose by loader compatibility
Loader compatibility is a hard filter, not a preference. If the server is already configured for Forge 1.20.1, BMC4 or ATM9 can fit that environment; Prominence II cannot. If the group has standardized on Fabric 1.20.1, Prominence II is the matching option among these three. Do not select a pack first and hope a different loader will work later.

Choose by commitment level
- Short or uncertain group commitment: BMC4 gives the clearest shared starting point without requiring a campaign schedule.
- Regular weekly sessions: Prominence II benefits from planned meetings so the story remains synchronized.
- Long-term server: ATM9 makes sense when the group enjoys gradual infrastructure and specialization.
Install the correct client profile
Launcher labels vary, but the process is the same: identify the pack’s official listing, select the Minecraft release and loader shown there, and install that exact profile. Do not use a similarly named pack merely because its icon or abbreviation looks familiar.

- Open your modpack launcher and search the full pack name: “Better MC (BMC4),” “Prominence II: Hasturian Era,” or “All the Mods 9.”
- Check the Minecraft version in the result. For this guide, the target is 1.20 or 1.20.1, with 1.20.1 being the clearest common target for all three listings.
- Check the loader before installing: Forge for BMC4 and ATM9; Fabric for Prominence II.
- Choose one release and record its exact version in your group chat. Avoid letting the launcher silently update one player’s instance while others remain on an older file.
- Launch the profile once in single-player. This downloads dependencies and exposes missing-file or memory errors before you schedule a multiplayer session.
- Open the title screen and verify the expected modded profile is active. If the game starts as an unmodded vanilla instance, stop and correct the profile before connecting.
Set up the server without version drift
A modded server is a separate installation from each player’s client. The server must use the same Minecraft release, loader and pack release as the clients. Treat that as a practical compatibility rule even though individual launcher interfaces and hosting panels use different wording.

- Install the server pack files for the chosen loader and Minecraft release, following the pack’s server instructions rather than copying a random client folder.
- Start the server once, accept the Minecraft EULA where required, then stop it so configuration files generate.
- Set the world name, difficulty, view settings and access controls before inviting the group.
- Copy the exact pack version and loader name into the server’s welcome message or rules file.
- Have one player connect before the main session. Check that the world loads, recipes appear and no missing-mod error is reported.
- Back up the world before changing the pack release or removing mods. A rollback is safer than attempting to repair a world after an incompatible update.
When a player cannot connect
- “Mod list differs” or a missing dependency: compare the player’s profile name, pack release, Minecraft version and loader with the server, then reinstall the same profile if any item differs.
- Game reaches the launcher but not the title screen: remove custom additions from the profile and test the unmodified pack instance. Extra mods are a common source of conflicts.
- Only one player crashes: have that player create a fresh instance of the same release. A damaged local configuration can fail even when the server is healthy.
- World fails after an update: restore the last backup and return every client to the previous pack release before investigating further.
Common naming and version traps
“BMC – BetterMC” is not BMC4
A discontinued 1.20.1 Forge pack called “BMC – BetterMC” by Jack_853 is a different project. It is not affiliated with the Better MC series and will not receive updates. Search for the BMC4 listing and verify the publisher team, rather than selecting a result solely because it contains “BetterMC.”

Better MC BMC5 targets Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge, and All the Mods 10 targets 1.21.1 on NeoForge. Neither is a 1.20.1 choice. A newer Minecraft version or a different loader can require a separate world and server setup; it is not a drop-in replacement for the packs in this guide.

Be cautious with other popular names
Vault Hunters, Create: Astral, Cobblemon and Pixelmon Reforged are often mentioned in lists of multiplayer modpacks, but their 1.20.1 support is not established consistently enough here to call them clean 1.20.1 recommendations. Pixelmon Reforged listings include 1.16.5/1.20.2 Forge and 1.21.1 NeoForge rather than a straightforward 1.20.1 target. Confirm a project’s own file page before committing your group’s server.
Hardware and performance planning
The available evidence does not establish a reliable RAM requirement or player-capacity figure for these packs. Do not treat uncited claims such as “10–12 GB for ATM9” or “10–20 players” as specifications. Actual performance depends on the view distance, world generation, active machines, entity counts, server hardware and number of simultaneous players.
Use a short pilot session to measure your own setup. Generate terrain in the areas your group intends to visit, have everyone join at once, and watch for delayed block updates, rubber-banding or long pauses during exploration. Lower view and simulation distances before removing content from the pack, and keep a fresh backup before experimenting with performance settings.

Agree on ownership and backups
Decide who controls the server files, where backups are stored and how a restore request is made. A shared world should not depend on one person’s memory or a single unprotected computer.
Use a version freeze
Pick a release for the first playthrough and freeze it for a scheduled period. When an update is considered, back up the world, test the new files separately and announce the change before anyone connects. This is especially important for ATM9, where a large system change can affect many machines at once.
Make room for different play styles
Create shared goals without requiring everyone to play identically. In BMC4, combine an exploration trip with a building project. In Prominence II, let players develop different roles while keeping the campaign sequence coordinated. In ATM9, document technical systems so builders and explorers can benefit from them without becoming automation specialists.
Final recommendation
Install Better MC BMC4 on Forge 1.20.1 when your group has mixed tastes or wants the least disruptive expansion of survival Minecraft. Install Prominence II: Hasturian Era on Fabric 1.20.1 when a shared RPG story is the point of the server. Install All the Mods 9 on Forge 1.20.1 when your friends are prepared for a broad, long-lived sandbox and the coordination that comes with it. Whichever you choose, lock the exact pack release, Minecraft version and loader before the first multiplayer session.
